Sony NEX-5N AVCHD 2.0 1080p50 and Premiere Pro/After Effects CS5.5

Hi all,
I have a new Sony NEX-5N and have shot some test 1080p50 video using it.
On my quest for some new editing/production software to close the loop I have just downloaded and installed a Trial Version of CS5.5 Production Premium.
I am able to load my video files into Premiere Pro.
However, when I attempt to open the Video File in After Effects, I recieve the following Error message:
After Effects error: '00023.MTS' cannot be imported - this '.mts' file is damaged or unsupported.
I have tried renaming the extension to .MPG, .M4V, .M2TS all with exactly the same result.
Perhaps this is a limitation of the Trial Version or perhaps a limitation of After Effects CS5.5.  Is anyone able to advise?
As extra information I include below the TEXT output from MediaInfo for the file I am able to load into Premiere Pro CS5.5 but not After Effects.
Thanks.

Hi and thanks, this is exactly what I am looking for :-)

All of the clips I have recorded fail to import to AE but work in PPro

I just recorded 4 seconds of a clock pendulum swinging, surprisingly the file was 20Mb!?!?  Anyway, I have made the file available for download at the following location:
http://andrew.net.au/~rowan/avchd/00032.MTS
You can browse the directory at http://andrew.net.au/~rowan/avchd/ if you need to "right-click" and save as.
I am hoping it is a limitation of the trial as I have noticed a few other "gotchas" with the trial version.
Thanks for the advice about video format, I have noticed that my computer (Core 2 Duo) is very slow to process the H.264 stream, PremierePro cannot play the 30sec stream in realtime (starts to stutter around 23sec) and After Effects starts its stutter almost immediately (both just playing the stream with no effects) - that said WindowsMediaPlayer has no problem playing the same stream at full speed.  I am however reluctant to do any transcoding except to a lossless format as it seems counter intuitive - but this will be the subject of another post, as I don't want to clutter this one.
Thanks again.

I need photo and video editing...but obviously don't want to pay for 2 separate plans. Also, it looks like with the single app plan you couldn't even get Premiere/After Effects (for instance) together for $20 a month, just one or the other? I've searched around the website but could use some additional clarification please. Thanks,

• Premiere to After Effects CS5 - lost transitions and other stuff....

Hi guys,
We are learning this stuff by using the 'hammer to the head' method...
Premiere CS5 to After Effects CS5 'replace with after effects composition' method loses the trasitions that were placed in Premiere.  They don't show in the After Effects composition.  Fine.
So, doing the all the effects and Magic Bullet effects in the footage and then doing a multi-machine render to a PNG sequence is fine.  Then, instead of using Media Encoder to assemble the PNG footage back to an AVI to re-import to Premiere, it's FAR faster to have after effects re-assemble the PNG to an AVI.  Here's where the 'weirdness' comes in.  We import the newly assembled AVI-PNG sequence to Premiere and CAN"T ADD transitions to the AVI file.  We will put in the cuts where we want it and it doesn't work!  HUH?  Here's where things go really sideways...If we assemble the same PNG sequence using the ultra-slow Media encoder, we can then do transitions in Premiere.  WHAT!  I don't get it.  What is After effects doing differently than Media encoder to put it all back together?
Sorry for the 'frustration', but man, what is goin on?
Thanks again for everyone's time.

• How do I fix yellow spots on face and background with Premiere Pro/After Effects CS4?

Hi,
I have the CS4 version of pretty much all Adobe products.  I have to color correct and edit a video that was shot during a seminar inside a conference room with an average digital camera.  The camera zoomed in a lot on the subject when he was talking.  So, it's not the best quality video and I'm trying to make it look as nice as possible.  I've done some general color correcting and it looks okay, but there are a number of yellow spots on the subject and in the background, mainly on brownish surfaces (the speaker is African American).  This probably appeared because of the low picture quality and zoom, but how can I fix it?  When I do the general color correction, the spots just change color, but don't disappear.  I played around with different things, but couldn't fix it. Is there a way to do this with Premiere Pro or After Effects?  Or would it be very complicated?  Or not possible at all?  The camera zooms in and out a few times, too, so would that pose a problem for correcting this?
Thanks for any info!

It can be done in After Effects.

• Exporting Motion Graphics and animation from After Effects CS5

I find that exporting from After Effects is problematic when using a ramp or working with anything that has a gradient of some kind. Always banding and artifacts.
Any insight into how to achieve good result with projects such as this?
Thx in advance.

I find that exporting from After Effects is problematic when using a ramp or working with anything that has a gradient of some kind.
...then don't! Sorry, but this is the same old thing: Simple computational math dictates that between points A and B only so many discrete color levels can exist in 8bit color and that any distance beyond 1024 pixels will result in duplicate pixels of the same colors to be adjacent, commonly referred to as banding. Or in other words: You are looking to fix a thing that can't really be fixed, even more so when compression reduces the available color range further. Yes, you can use all sorts of tricks like adding noise or adjusting gamma to minimize this, but it will never go away. The ugly harsh truth is, that it all starts with a flawed design approach and any of that is merely trying to fix things at the wrong and. As I said in my initial sentence, don't use gradients that cover such large distances along just one axis or uniformely colored areas. Ad structure by adding more gradients perpendicular/ at an angle to the main gradient, use subtle color variations, add vignetting or generally use "busy" designs that have more elements or textures that would allow to forego large uniform areas....

• Premiere Pro, After Effects and others crash immediately.

Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping to get some ideas here as i'm completely stumped, I signed up to the creative cloud about 4 months ago, I use Photoshop a lot which is still running fine, however Premiere Pro and After Effects crash immediately, and will not even make it into the program, I'm running a brand new machine, 16gb ram, windows 7, Geforce GTX 750..  I've included a couple screen grabs to better explain.
I've tried replacing the ImageRenderer, dll file to no avail, any help appreciated, how and what should I do?  I have tried uninstalling and re installing with no luck.

I too am running Windows 7 Pro, I also updated the drivers when I was trying to resolve the issue, running GeForce Game Ready Driver that was released not too long ago, however it wasn't working before this was updated.
It did work at some point, I've had Premiere Pro installed for a few months, originally it ran but I was only testing it then.  I should also note Audition is also not working with the same error, might be an audio issue or something?  As Photoshop works fine and InDesign work fine.

• Questions about Adobe After Effects CS5 and CS5.5

I have the Adobe Design Creative Suite CS5 (Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, Flash CS5, Dreamweaver CS5, InDesign CS5, and Fireworks CS5) and was going to order an old copy of After Effects CS5 for my iMac. However when I was about to order on an online store, I notice that there is a CS5 and a CS5.5 version for After Effects. I would like to know which version is better and if I get Adobe After Effects CS5.5 version will I be able to intergrate with CS5 versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash?
Alos is there a way for to order a copy of Adobe After Effects CS5(or CS5.5 version) on the Adobe online store? I don't want to order the CS6 version of After Effects because I'm afraid I will not be able to intergrate it with my CS5 versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash.

You should get After Effects CS6. There is no reason to be concerned about using After Effects Effects CS6 with Flash, Illustrator, and Photoshop CS5.

• After Effects CS5 and Sony HDR-SR1 AVCHD (.MTS) File Format

Hi everyone,
I've just started with After Effects, and I the only video camera I have is an old Sony HDR-SR1 camera, which records in 1080i and uses the AVCHD file format. I've recorded a few videos, in which I proceeded to try and import to After Effects. The program came up with this error: "After Effects error: '0020.MTS' cannot be imported - this '.mts' file is damaged or unsupported." I understand that this error is pretty common, but I do not understand how to fix it. I've already tried the Media Encoder, and the videos that come out are horrible quality videos that are nothing like the videos recorded on the camera. I've also tried Sony's included Picture Motion Browser (I have the latest version) and when I try to convert, the video also comes out horrible quality and always has these annoying lines running across the video. Please help!
Thanks!

Actually, the AE should recognize the AVCHD footage, since I imported one of my recoedings, which is 1080p MTS to AE, and it worked. Maybe the problem lies in 1080i. I always deinterlace my 1080i files and then import them to AE. You may try to deinterlace your files and then import them to AE.
As for the deinterlacing, you can google or you can give brorsoft mts converter, which I'm using now,  a try. It has a codec for AE and Adobe Premiere, wchich make it easier to import files to AE. Besides, you can convert your 1080i files to MPEG-2 and then import them to AE.

• AVCHD blown highlights in AE and Premiere Pro CS6

Hi Guys,
I have the NEX 5n and Premiere Pro CS6 on Windows 7 Workstation.
It seems as if Premiere is geting the 0-255 16-235 Levels kind of wrong. AVCHD files of all kinds have clipped highlights when exposure on the NEX or any other camcorder is set spot on before clipping.
In PP cs6 and cs5.5 you can just bring all the Information that is above 1.0 in the waveform down with any 32 bit Filter that deals with Levels. But it schouldnt be up there above 1.0 in the first place or am I wrong?
This also applies to the Canon XA10 camcorder
clipped whites:

Levels adjusted with 32 bit Filter in PP = No clipping in highlights

In AfterEffects its different: You would have to work the whole AE Project in 32 bit to be able to save the clipped detail in the whites. If you work in 8bit (which is standard ae project) then AE will just cut off all the info above 1.0.
But the question is: Is Adobe getting it wrong in the second consecutive Version of PP that is supposed to deal nativly with AVCHD? Or why do highlights that are not clipped on any AVCHD camcorder, appear as clipped in PP cs5.5 and cs6
Even the opensource FFDSHOW codec gets it spot on when played with mpclassic (as Andrew Reid from EOSHD.com stated and I also can confirm this)
Also when I connect the nex 5n with hdmi to my Plasma everything plays just fine no clipping at all!

when exposure on the NEX or any other camcorder is set spot on
Are you saying the waveform on the camera is displaying the same image differently  to the wfm in PPRO?  I would be surprised if that were the case.
That paper kind of looks very "hot" and it doesnt surprise me what the wfm is showing here.
FWIW: I extensively monitor my AVCHD by using level, gray and color  cards in my shots.  The wfms in the camera, monitor and PPRO always correspond.
Try shooting a color chart and also checkout .some color bars generated by your camera.

• Bad performance quadro 4800 and premiere pro

Could someone please help me understand if somethings wrong with my settings or if my 4800 is defected?
I run OSX Lion 10.7.2 and have the quadro fx 4800 installed in a:
Mac Pro 4,1
2 x 2.93Ghz Quad-core Intel Xeon
12GB of Ram
with two additional Geforce GT 120 installed too.
the latest drivers for the 4800
GPU driver version: 7.12.9 270.05.10f03
CUDA driver version: 4.0.50
I run Premiere 5.5.2 and have tested the performance with the two different settings:
Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration
Mercury Playback Engine Software Only
I did this test because I didn’t feel my 4800 did the work I’ve read everywhere it should. Adding simple text titles to AVCHD footage made my playback drop frames.
Anyhow, I tested my machine with 1920x1080 AVCHD and added video layers until I started to see stutter during playback. First with “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration”. With 14 video layers sized down so you could see them all beside one another playback started to drop frames. The yellow line was still yellow in the top of the timeline. Shouldn’t it turn red if the footage needs rendering?
I then switched to “Mercury Playback Engine Software Only” and the yellow line turned red. The strange thing is that when I played back the same 14 layers of video the dropped frames where gone!! Isn’t this beyond strange??? Shouldn’t everything run more smooth with the “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration”?
Has it got anything to do with my Geforce GT 120 installed? Should I get rid of those? My two 24 inch apple displays are both connected to the 4800.
PLEASE help me or redirect me to some good forums!

After testing final cut (which I love) and Premiere back and forth with the exact same media I notice that editing prores in Final cut is the best when it comes to just edit the film. Sure Premiere does take native MTS files but what good is this when it doesn't run fluidly? Comparing playback and editing with prores in Final Cut and Premiere makes me realize that on my computer, don't ask me why, a rendered sequence with prores material in Premiere is far more jerky than a sequence with prores that "do not need render" in Final cut. Shouldn't they be the same?? Movements like camera pans that originally were shot really smoothly isn't as smooth as they should be playing back in premiere (and yes I know I got the right sequence settings and all). Final cut however gives me what I want.
To me it all comes down to how good the editing App presents what you currently are editing. Adobe has many advantages with the dynamic link and so on but playback is a such an important part of editing!! Has anyone got the same problem with "not as smooth playback as you would really want" even though the sequence is rendered displaying a green line??
Thanks for the links lasvideo but I practically read every article there is about CUDA, premiere and mercury playback engine already.
Anyone knows anything about Adobe CS 6 release dates?

• CS5 After Effects and Premiere Pro

I am using CS5 After Effects and Premiere Pro with footage from a Canon 5D Mark III. Shooting/editing 1080p 24 (or at least their version of it). What are the best render settings/codecs to use to export from AE for import into Premiere Pro other than the animation codec or Pro Res? I dont have Pro Res and the animation codec is great but the file size slows down the app. Thx in advance.
Or a few resources to explain the whole codec/export/bitrate/etc issue once and for all for different situations wether it be brodcast or internet or simply burning a dvd to play on a HD TV. It is almost like this is some kind of secret no one will tell...LOL...i cant find a difinitive answer anywhere.

As is stated above there are Production codecs which can be lossless, nearly lossless, and at higher bit depth. Production Codecs include Uncompressed (huge files but fast do decode and will not playback in real time) Editing Codecs like Black Magic, Avid, ProRez, and others that are smaller, can still be lossless, may support alpha channels and higher bit depths, and Archival Codecs like Microcosm, JPEG2000, PNG, which support alpha channels, are lossless, and on some systems, will playback in real time.
Editing codecs are specifically designed to be played back in a NLE. These are good choices for a Premiere Pro / AE workflow. So are Archival Codecs. If your project involves a lot of sharing of files between users and apps, then pick a format common to everyone that is at the highest bit depth your storage system can accommodate.
There are also image sequence formats. These include PSD sequences, TGA, TIFF, PNG and others. Some support higher bit depth (32bit Float). Image Sequences work great, have advantages when it comes to correcting just a few frames here and there, and are used to a great extent in professional production pipelines. They are much more flexible than video but they have a distinct disadvantage when it comes to keeping track of the files and keeping things organized.
Then there are delivery codecs. These are designed for playback. They are not suitable for production because delivery codecs use GOP compression, are limited to low bit depth, and are not lossless. IOW, if you render to a delivery codec, then you process and render again to the same codec the artifacts start to build up. H.264 for example, after just 2 or 3 passes, even at very high quality settings, falls completely apart.
Consumer and ProSumer cameras use delivery codecs for image capture. Your Cannon 5D does. This is OK, and it's the only option you've got with some cameras, but the best workflow for these types of capture systems is to transcode the footage to a production codec before you do anything. Production codecs will render faster because it takes less time to decode the footage for processing. You should never render AVCHD or MPEG footage back to the same codec. Always use a production codec until you're project is ready to archive and deliver.
One note on ProRez on Windows. This is not a good idea for production. You cannot maintain proRez native 10bit color space. You should not render to ProRez using 3rd party workarounds because you're just building a proRez container for a windows compressed video. Sure, it will playback on a Mac, but the actual image will have lost important detail and color depth.
Let me give my humble opinion on Dynamic Link. This works great for a shot or two in a Premiere Sequence. This works great for working with Audio in Premiere and Audition. This works great for rendering for delivery or even production using the Adobe Media Encoder. Did you note my second sentence? Dynamic link between AE and Premiere Pro for a few shots in a sequence is a good idea and a time saver, but if you're cutting a film that's over a few minutes, each scene should be it's own sequence. If the scene has more than just a few shots that need to be processed in After Effects then using Dynamic Link can easily become a monster you don't want to deal with. The key to efficient post production of an effects laden production is planning. You've got to cut for story first, then produce your effects shots with sufficient handles (extra frames) to allow some fine tuning, then recut the final. Any other workflow on a long project is just wasting time.

• After Effects CS6 and Premiere Pro CS6 Long Startup and Application Hang

Problem:
After Effects and Premiere Pro CS5.5 and CS6 are very slow to start all of a sudden.  Around 5 minutes to get to/by the intro dialogue box.  For AE, the majority of the time is spent on the "initializing user interface." Then, if I can make a comp, and even a layer inside that comp, it will "Hang" if I attempt to open AE's General preferences for example (no preferences window ever comes up).  This "hang" is what the Event Viewer in windows calls it, with the faulting module being afterfx.exe.  Premiere is not much different.   It makes it to the new project window fast, but after setting project parameters and creating the first sequence, I can't get into the preferences either and the application hangs.  It is important to note that if I have another application open, like Chrome or Firefox for example at the time the application hangs, they will freeze as well.  As soon as I kill the Afterfx.exe process, they come back to life.
I have read nearly all threads on the subject, and am struggling to find a solution:
Deleted preferences folder under my username's appdata.
Turned off Firewall (network traffic from dynamiclink, qtserver, etc was allowed, but what the hay)
ran windows system file checker/malwarebytes/rkill/rootkit detection.
checked for windows compatibility checkboxes under the file.
Uninstalled Wacom Tablet drivers
Disabled Aero
Started with ctrl-alt-shift to delete pref.
uninstalled video driver and replaced with one 6 months ago.
uninstalled, reinstalled, and tested various quicktime versions back to version 7.69
moved plugins folder
moved opengl's plugin out of the folder temporarily
Disabled all 3rd party codecs (xvid was the only one installed and for months)
reinitialized default directshow filters
checked for adobe font list (none found) and removed any fonts from 1 month ago to present.
used msconfig to selective startup without other applications/services running.
Uninstalled all adobe products, and reinstalled.
I performed all of these in a systematic manner, trying to solve the problem.  None have fixed the problem.
So it doesn't seem to be a network issue, a codec issue, a plugin issue, a driver issue, font issue, or conflicting application.  Any thoughts?
System Info:
PC Windows 7 pro 64-bit SP1
Core i7 - 960 24GB ram
AMD Radeon 6750  v12.10
Adobe CS6 Master Collection

Who's says that Microsoft can't debug?
I used msconfig, first disabling startup items, -same result.
Enabled all startup items, disabled all non-microsoft services - AE worked!
I re-enabled each service in turn until AE crashed.
The fault was related to an item for a video streaming device I have in my house.  It was Monsoon-multimedia's Vulkano Service.  Sometimes under the old name of Hava, this is an app that acts like a sling-box to send my Cable TV to my screen.  It does load a couple of virtual devices in device manager, and uses a proprietary codec.
I uninstalled the vulkano streamer application and rebooted the external Vulkano device.  I reinstalled the Vulkano and verified it connected to the device and could stream.  Once it did, I tried AE again and IT WORKED!
I wonder if simply rebooting the Vulkano would have fixed it.  Its like opening the garage door to turn on the refridgerator.
Thanks for the help!

I'm using Windows 7 on a custom-built PC with i7-2600 processor and 16GB RAM, ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN 3 mobo, 560 Ti graphics card, 80GB Intel SSD for boot drive.
Note: I actually planned on upgrading to a new 120GB SSD next week and doing a clean install, do you think that could also fix this problem?

Browntimmy I would recommend posting in those product specific forums with your inquiry.  There is troubleshooting steps which can be employed for both products which are not install related.  The link to the forums is as follows:
