Sony, please offer lossless RAW on A7RII and other cameras...

This shortcoming has been well documented in dozens of places, including a thread posted in this very forum. Yet the A7RII has been announced with killer specs across the board, hampered by the same poor lossy RAW compression, which makes pushing images to any degree in postprocessing a headache. This shortcoming will prevent me, and hundreds or thousands of other pro and serious amateur photographers, from buying this camera.  Google it, Sony--it's discussed by hundreds of people on dozens of forums. It's well past time to offer lossless RAW.

Hi spencernb,
Welcome to the Sony Community!
Thanks for the show of interest on the A7 series. We will forward you request to the engineering department for future product developments and improvements.  To keep updated on the news and alerts about our products, kindly visit esupport.sony.com.
If my post answers your question, please mark it as "Accept as Solution". Thanks_Mitch

  • RAW, Aperture 2 and new camera

    Hello,
I will in few days with a new Olympus E420 camera when it will be availlable.
I saw that SONY also has released a lot of new reflex camera also.
Do you know in Aperture application, if the support of this new camera is fast, or if we have to wait for a long time to have the support of the new camera ?
In fact, I don't know exactly if the suport is in Mac OS 10.5, or in Aperture, but I know that I want to develop the Raw files with Aperture 2...
    Thank-you for your help.
    Xavier

Olympus cameras do not have great Apple support for their raw formats. Your E420 may have hope of support since I see that the E400 and E410 raw files are on Apple's support list. I have a nifty Olympus compact, SP500-OUZ wide angle to 18x zoom, which produces the raw format ORF that I can only view and edit with Adobe or Olympus products. Needless to say, I was hoping that ORF files would have support in Aperture 2 (and iPhoto). I wish Apple could use the same driver software as Adobe so that I could just use the same driver with both Photoshop and Aperture. My primary camera is a Canon 30D which does produce raw files that work well in Aperture 2 so now I just shoot jpeg format photos with the Olympus.

  • Aperture Olympus E-PL2 Raw Color Distortion and other issues

Hello there, Olympus Micro Four Thirds Fans!
So finally, Apple introduced Olympus E-PL2 Raw Support in Aperture 3. After some testing and troubleshooting there are still some issues remaining that sort of still leave the Raw option unusable for me:
The Apple Raw developer does not seam to read Olympus gradation curve settings properly. I usually leave the cameras color mode to "natural" which in JPEG gives the Olympus-typical beautiful documentary-style color accuracy. However, in Raw, colors get distorted in the most unpleasant way! Especially the greens get horribly oversaturated.
Noise reduction settings also are not correctly translated. I'm the type of Raw user who always wants to start from the camera settings chosen and who then wants to be able to tweak settings to perfection just a little bit. But all in all I chose an Olympus camera, because it does deliver superb white balance metering, decent noise reduction and beautiful color gradation right out-of-the-box.
SPEED! Aperture seems to be horribly horribly slow with Olympus .orf files. Lightroom is easily ten times faster in real-time developing of Raw files.
Did someone observe the same behaviour? How do you work around these issues, what is the best setup for the apple raw developer?
    Greetings from Esslingen am Neckar!

    Hi there!
I am now developing my raw files with Olympus Viewer. It is the only software solution that would deliver results close or identical to Olymus built in JPEG engine. Most of the time I need to get color reproduction that is as subtle and fine as the Olympus engine, but I do want to benefit from all the other postprocessing advantages that RAW has to offer.
Within Aperture I have not been able to get comparable color rendering.

  • Keying: R3D RAW vs Panasonic (and others)

    Hi,
I have a largely random question, that I am looking for, if not an answer, then maybe just a pointer in the right direction.
If I shoot a character in front of a green screen (This was a real person, and not one of our miniatures! ) with our Panasonic AF101 and our R3D Scarlet, and I bring both pieces of footage into After Effects as is - and then apply Keylight. The single click key (albe it far from perfect) is way, way cleaner on the panasonic than the R3D.
I am wondering why this is. I have come up with two possible reasons (and there might be many, many more)
    1) The camera sensor reacts differently to light, and so the exposure on the Panasonic might be better than the Scarlet
    2) The Panasonic camera has built in looks, and does not shoot RAW footage. The R3D reads colour differently, and so trying to key the R3W footage may not be the best way to go.
I am asking the question, fully aware that the single key click never works, and that there are several methods to key, but I am hoping that someone has a lot of experience working and keying R3W to give me some tips.
for instance, should I maybe run the R3W through RedCineX first, and make colour changes before I key, or should I immediately transcode to another codec before keying?
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
I am currently busy with a render, but I will try to pull a quick screenshot from the different cameras, with a "One click key" for comparrison and attach them tomorrow.
    Pierre

    Hi Rick,
Just an update for you - It definately was a "User issue" with the R3D RAW and keying.
As you said, it is all about the difference in camera, lens and lighting, or ways that the camera reacts in lighting.
We are seriously underlighting at the moment. When I recorded the last time, alongside another camera, the keying was great for their take, but absolutely horrible for the R3D - Widest Aperture, High (within reason Gain) slightly slower shutter speed, as no motion blur was required, and still, the keying was a nightmare.
I then took a greenscreen outside, under the sunlight, and proceeded to pull an almost perfect, "One Key Key" of our editor standing in front of it.
So I will take the next week or so to re-look at our lighting, and maybe get a 2000W blondie or two on the set as well.
Have a great week, and thank you for your continued input  By the way, we have finally completed the shows intro! What a milestone!
Epsidoe shooting starts shortly - what fun!
    Cheers - Pierre

  • Issues with White Balance and other camera setting...

I have found a glitch with the camera on the Lumia 800: When you try to change a different white balance setting- (try it with incandescent so you can see the difference) as well as changing the scene (ie to portrait mode) it will flip back to auto white balance, although it will say that it is still incandescent.  If you change the scene first and then the white balance and save those settings, it will take one picture like that and then revert back to auto white balance again for the next shot, but again it will tell you that it is still incandescent. (You can clearly see the white balance difference between the 2 shots, even though the camera settings say they should be the same). The whole point of saving settings is so that you can take multple shots with the same settings.  I have spent hours on the phone to Nokia trying to explain this to them and they have assured me that it will be fixed in the next update.  I took the phone back to the Orange shop and we tried 3 different handsets and they all had the same problem.
I also have the same problem with video autofocus that  lots of people have mentioned.  Has anyone found a solution yet?  The main reason I got this phone (only last week) was for the camera so I am diappointed.  I am a photographer so I am really fussy about cameras!  They have said in the Orange shop that I can change the Lumia for another phone, such as a Galaxy S2, which is also an awesome phone.  The thing is, I really love the Lumia otherwise.  I really like the fact that I don't have an iPhone anymore, for a start!!
Does anyone think the network you are on makes a difference? It's just that several people have suggested that there could be a conflict with the Orange software and the Nokia/Windows software.  Does anyone else have this problem who is not with Orange?

Thanks for all of your valuable suggestions.
The problem was compounded when there were drastic shifts in the levels of ambient light also occuring at the same time.
    Happy Holidays to everyone.

  • How do you Uninstall Camera Raw 5.5 and 5.6 updates

My 5.5 Raw Update was working well, then I decided to update to the 5.6 Raw plugin.  I was not happy with the colors and sharpness of the images opened with the 5.6 plugin.  I would like to thrash this and get back to 5.5.  However, PS E does not allow me to open any RAW images now and the Camera Raw Preference in Bridge does not open.  New updates cannot be installed either as my system say I have the 5.6 plugin installed.  How do I uninstall everything and get back to my 5.5 update? I cannot find the location of my 5.6 Raw plugin, I have looked under PS 4 Photoshop application folders as well as Bridge folders. Thanks for your help.

Finally, my problem was solved by Adobe Support, go to  : www.tinyurl.com/yfznztk and hit Enter.  Then manually download Camera Raw 5.5 plugin from their site.  Once its on your desktop highlight the "Plugin".  Copy this Plugin ( Command C), then open your Hard disk on the desktop and go to Application Support-Adobe CS4-File Format- hit command V to load the Camera Raw 5.5 into the Plugin Folder.  Then re-start computer. Now,  you should have a working Camera Raw 5.5.  Do not download the Camera Raw 5.6 as it is a Beta version meant for developers!

The A7/A7R raw files will be supported with ACR 8.3 probably finalized in a few weeks.

Adobe Bridge CS6 (Mac) won't open .arw files from my Sony RX100. I was told to update Camera Raw to at least 7.2. I tried to download this but got a DNG Converter instead. Where is Camera Raw? (it does not show up in a search of my hard drive. There is a folder of camera profiles but no extension or plug-in with this name). How do I find out what version I have already? How do I get the correct version?  . . . OR . . . is it the case that Bridge will never open Sony raw files directly and I will have to do a separate conversion process every time I want to use a raw file??. Can someone explain this?

This link shows that ACR 8.3 supports the Nikon D610 and 6.7.1 was the final version for CS5.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
So you can upgrade to CS6 and ACR 8.7.1
or using the DNG converter, convert your Nikon raw files to dng format to open in CS5.
Here is the download link: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 8.7.1
or Windows: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 8.7.1
And here is a great video tutorial on how to use the converter.

  • Sony please answer and fix problem!

I will really appreciate a reply via this forum or by email.
I am really disappointed. It's impsosible to use my tablet since your last update that I did on Friday evening.
I tried to back up: impossible. I tried to restore and it's doesn't work and it's even worts now.
Could you please stop ignoring people and fix the problems. The tablet was quite expensive but I was happy with it until Friday.

...or perhaps you could grow up, calm down, stop moaning in public and multiplying inflammatory threads about the same issue to no avail. And most importantly gather yourself and fix what you have messed up in the first place?
Nobody has pushed you to perform this update so please have a look at suggestions from another thread (it does not look like you have tried thse at all?), fix / restore the tablet and report back your findings.
Mods, please close this thread if possible.

  • Sony, please tell me how you allow something like this to happen? Horrific Support Experience

So, the below happened.  Essentialy, Sony sent me four broken TVs, forced me to spend about 20 hours of time replacing those TVs, and has refused to replace my broken television.  The below is a chain with one of your reps.  I would never have expected such a poor customer service experience from a company of Sony's caliber.  It has been very disappointing.  You insist that you are giving me an "offer" but you have given me no options whatsoever.
I note that you continue to maintain that there is no viable replacement.  However, a simple search on your webpage and online shows that there are multiple 48 inch LED televisions still available.  I find your representation to be disengenuous.  The below chain is only one point in the long line of frustrating communications with your representatives.  All told me different things and made promises that were not kept.  I can only imagine how my case file looks.
I would like an explanation from Sony how you could allow something like this to happen?  This has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had with a electronics company -- and I have had alot.  It has been terrible.

To be clear, I am not "accepting" your offer as I don't think it is fair or makes me whole. I am telling you to do whatever you have to do. You have given me no real other options.

Thank you for contacting Sony and for accepting the offer. We apologize that we cannot offer you the regular retail price of the unit since that is not the amount that you paid it for. We will email you a prepaid shipping label which you can use to ship us back your TV and once we determined that it is in transit back to us we will process the check with the amount of $369.99 and you will receive the check in 4-6 weeks. Thank you.

How you get away with treating your customers like this is beyond me.  I am telling you that I purchased the television at a discounted rate that I am no longer able to obtain.  In other words, the amount you are refunding me will not make me whole.  I am also telling you that your colleague literally offered me a refurbished TV about two hours ago (apparently your group offers less to customers now).  You have already sent me three TVs and wasted about 20 hours of my time.  Despite all that, you unapologetically state that your "FINAL" offer gets me to nowhere that I need to be.  You have no remorse for the situation and have not gone any extra distance to make a customer whole, which is all that I am asking for.
You have beaten me into submission over the past month with broken TVs, hours wasted shipping, long conversations with support representatives, and failed promises.  You guys go ahead and do whatever it is you need to do.  There is only so much that I can argue about.  No customer should expect this type of treatment from a company like Sony.  People purchase Sony so that they DONT have to deal with that type of nonsense.  This has honestly been the worst customer service interaction I have ever had.

Thank you for contacting Sony. We double checked if there is a same or comparable refurbished unit for replacement but there is none. Your file is being already being handled by our department which is the highest level you can get since our managers and supervisors are not part of the escalation path. The $319.99 is the amount that you paid for the TV and that is what we are going to refund you and the $50 is for compensation. You are getting more than what you paid for the TV so Sony believes it will cut it. Our offer is FINAL. Thank you.

    Mark,
I just spoke to an individual on the phone who told me that you could send a refurbished model .  That conversation is exactly what prompted my email to this email address -- they told me to reach out here because you could provide me a better option rather than the two that were given.  Now you are telling me that not only can you not offer me a better option but that you are taking away an option previously given.  This is getting more and more ridiculous.  I am sorry but this just isnt working for me.  I dont understand how there is this much miscommunication between your departments.
I would like to be put in touch with a manager on this case.  Your offer to refund me 320 + 50 will not cut it.  I am amazed that a company like Sony, which people purchase because of the supposed product support and service, is failing their customer in this way.  It's very disappointing.

Thanks, Mark.  My preference would then be to try a refurbished model one more time.  The issue is that I got the TV at Black Friday discount.  I wouldnt be able to replace it even if I wanted to.  So, I will try one more time and go from there.  Please let me know once the TV is shipped.

If the unit will be replaced it will be the 4th time already and to tell you honestly it will be much cheaper for you to just buyback the unit rather than to pay the shipper deliver the TV every time we replace it and we are not saying that it is your fault just to make it clear. We will buyback the unit for $319.99 and we will add up another $50 as compensation for all the troubles. Please let us know once you have made your decision. Thank you.

  • Sony Alpha ILCE-6000 raw compatibility

    Hello,
Does someone know when the Sony Alpha ILCE-6000 raw compatibility will come ?
It's a few month now this camera is available and Aperture doesn't seem to be able to treat that RAW.
    Thank you for helping me.
    MCCHPS.
    OS X 10.9.4
    Aperture 3.5.1

    Hi all,
the situation is very unsatisfactory ... even you know some more details:
    1) with the OSX 10.9.3 update Aperture can read RAWs from the Alpha 6000 (as well the Alpha 5000), but the result is an overexposed picture (see e.g. http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53734631).
    2) other commercial tools like LR 5.4 support the camera (since ~ April this year).
    3) even the free raw converters can handle the Alpha 6000 raw.
If one digs deeper into this:
    a) you will discover that the input plug-in file in the 10.9.3 apple camera raw update is accidentally for a different camera model ... there are included correction tables for ISO steps that the 6000er is not capable (50,64,80,100,... the alpha 6000 starts at 100), this explains somehow the overexposure.
    b) for the free tools the community uses the input plug-in files which are foreseen for the NEX-5N ...
    c) ... because they discovered that the commercial tools are doing the same. If you compare the plug-in files in Lightroom designated for the alpha 6000 you will see the same content in the files for the NEX-5N
So it would be easy to patch this really quickly ...
    Please Apple awake !!!
    Best regards,
    Frank
