Sort order on smart playlist

I would like to create a Smart Playlist to sort all my purchased (AAC) music sorted first by genre and then in alphabetical order within each genre. I have tried it in different ways but not quite the way I want it. The progam seems to sort by genre and then places the song in order of artist and that's not what I want.
Is there any one here that can tell me how to accomplish this?
Thanks

Thanks for your response, I have created smart playlists for all the different genres, and they update automatcally (live) as I purchase music and the program automatically sorts the songs in alphabetical order and that works fine when I want to listen to a particualr genre. But what I want is to create a smart playlist of all the purchased music sorted first by genre and then alphabetically so that as you listen to the playlist it moves from genre to genre within the same playlist and the tracks are alphabetical within each genre. Do you understand?
I think it can be done using smart playlist creation I just don't know how.

  • Sort Order in Smart Playlist iTunes 9.1

Now that I've upgraded to 9.1 I am finding that the sort order is gone wrong in Smart Playlists. What is happening is that artists are being sorted by their first name rather than by their last name regardless of what I have entered in Sort Artist field.
However, the sort works as it should in the Library list.
So, using Paul McCartney as an example; I have in the Artist field *Paul McCartney*, in the Sort Artist field I have *McCartney Paul*. When I view my music in the Library list he is sorted under M. But when I view my music in a Smart Playlist he is sorted under P.

First give the list a "kick" by sorting by some other fields, closing and reopening iTunes, and then sorting again by Artist.
Also look at the Sorting tab and make sure the tracks do not have data that could be interfering with the Sort Artist, namely Sort Album Artist.
If neither of those helps, you have probably discovered a bug in 9.1, which you can report here:

  • Sort order of audio playlist

Why is it that the sort order on my Music Library Playlists are not replicated on the Apple TV? (They are in different order) I want them in "Date Added" order. Is there a way to get the play list on the Apple TV to sort to this?

I just tried that suggestion, and it worked the first time but not after that...I have a recently added songs smart playlist that I sort by date added, and I just bought a new song to test it out and it was added to the bottom in the ATV playlist even though it's on top (due to sort) in iTunes...
The work around for me is to duplicate the playlist, delete the original, and then resync...

  • Sorting my Podcasts/Smart Playlist

I used to be able to sort my podcasts in a smart playlist, from my highest rating to lowest rating.
I must have done something, but now my podcasts are no longer in the same rated order after syncing to my iPhone.
I know I am doing something wrong cuz I did this before, but cannot figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated

Smart playlist sorted on Release date still out of order on my touch. How can it not make sense to the Apple people that a serial podcast should be played in order of release date. And multiple related podcasts selected in the same smart playlist should all be played in temporal order. Even filtering on smart lists cannot be based on the release date. IE I want all of the podcasts "RELEASED" in 2008 in a list and I want to play them in temporal order. It is such a no brainer that I cannot believe that I am writing this again for the FOURTH itunes release!! Smart lists?? More like moron lists!!
Seriously regretting recommending apple to friends. WIth this much incompetence they are likely to come out with the latest and greatest new tablet device and forget to put a camera in it.

  • Itunes sort order different in playlist

I'm having a weird sort order problem... in one playlist - I have the column "album" sorted. The songs names (under "name") for one album sort just fine - the names are "ep 1", "ep 2", "ep 3", etc. and appear in that order.
However, if I click that album column to sort by "album by artist" - the song order changes. now they are seemingly random (although I imagine there has to be a reason behind the order).
The sort order of those songs is even different *in another playlist* - ie, they are not even in the same "random" order they show in when I sort them by "album by artist" in the other playlist above. They're in a "different random" order.
    Any ideas?

That's helpful for my issues with iPhone, which are yet another variation on what I'm talking about - but in going through the article, I couldn't find anything that pointed to why my "name" column is not sorting properly for the same artist album.
Selecting all the songs in that album, get info --> shows the artist, album artist and album names (both album artist and artist are exactly the same) - so my point is there are not some kind hidden character problem - or they wouldn't match and therefore the fields would be blank.
If the "album by artist" is the primary sort, what does itunes use for the secondary column to sort? This should help me answer the problem.... it sure doesn't look like "name" column is used as 2nd... because it's not sorted!

  • Changing Sort Order in Smart Album when Looking for Roll Name=Corruption

We've confirmed via testing and from new posters that changing the sort order in a Smart Album who's criteria is to look for a roll name will cause iPhoto to crash and then crash upon launch after that.
So to avoid corrupting your library do not change the sort order of a Smart Album designed to locate rolls.
    The thread discussing this is:
IPhoto keeps on crashing, cannot use it
Rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager recovered the library. However, I don't know if a rebuild via the Control+Option key will do the same.
    G5 Dual Core 2GHz, 2G RAM, 22 Display, 250G HD, 200G FW HD, QT 7.0.4P   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Canon S400, i850 & LIDE 50, Epson R200, 2G Nano

Ha! I upgraded to iPhoto 6.0.3 and opened the dummy library I had created. (This was the library where the crash on launch kept happening because I had a smart folder looking for rolls and sorted by title or something else other than the default.)
Guess what, it opened just fine! 6.0.3 fixes the crash. Not sure how much it helps people who started new libraries, but at least others won't run into this.

  • Order in smart playlist

I have a smart plalyst A configured as such:
    1) Include all songs from playlist B
    AND
    2) Where rating = (no rating)
The songs in playlist B are in a very specific order, how do I preserve the same in playlist A ?

I don't think you can. There is no way to tell a SPL to also copy the play order from another playlist you are grabbing songs out of.

  • The Sort order for a playlist created on my MB Pro is wrong on my iPad. Can I fix this?

When I create a playlist on my MB Pro I cannot guarantee that the playlist will be in the same sort order on my iPad. It is on my MB Air, but not on my iPad. Does anyone know why? How can I correct this?
This is important with classical music where the order of the tracks may be critical.
    Thanks in advance

Try deselecting Sync Music under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync which should remove all music from your iPhone. Follow this by reselecting Sync Music and your selections below followed by another sync to re-transfer the music.

  • IPad music smart playlist sort

I have a problem with the sort order of smart playlists being different than the computer I am synching with? Any ideas?. I hav ipad2 synced with an iMac 27" running lion. Any help very much appreciated

    it's a bug, but here's the workaround:
at the bottom of the playlist, select "Limit to [however many] items selected by [choose the order you prefer].
    • by "limiting" to a high number of items or GB, you won't be limiting the playlist at all.
    • to sort alphabetically, choose "selected by name." (or whatever other option you want).
after doing this, you shouldn't see any change to the items displayed in the smart playlist in itunes. however, the playlist will now sync properly to your idevices.  :-)

  • Smart Playlists on iOS

Still not working properly for me. How about anyone else? It's an improvement - I see a few songs in them now, but in some I am only seeing one or two where there should be hundreds.
Haven't been able to check the play count / last played yet but will experiment further with it tomorrow.

iOS 5.1 did not fix all the problems related to smart playlist in the iPad 2 with iTunes Match subscription.
Smart Playlists based on dates are not syncing across all devices and Macs/PCs. For example, Recently Played.
Smart Playlists based on play counts are not syncing across all devices and Macs/PCs.
Sorting of songs in iPad2 is out of whack.  iPad2 music app seems to ignore the sort order in smart playlists. this is very annoying since I have a lot of classical music in my library in which track arrangement is very important. I'm not having this problem with my iPod Touch though, just in the iPad2.
iOS 5.1 did fix one of my problems: the Smart Playlists in the iPad2 that are based on the "Comments" field. My smart playlists are now correctly populated with songs.
These are my observations, so far.

  • Any way to change sort order of playlists in iTunes?

When you select Music (top left of screen) and Playlists (top middle of screen) in iTunes 11, a list of playlists appears in a pane on the left.  The playlists are sorted first by smart playlists, then by normal playlists (with individual playlists sorted alphabetically within each of the two groupings).
I want all the playlists sorted alphabetically, regardless of whether each one is a smart playlist or a normal playist.  Any way to do this?  Thx

The answer is no, the order cannot be changed.

  • Smart Playlist sorting

Is there any way to layer sort in a smart playlist in Itunes?
    example :
A podcast is Tagged wrong so to link the four hours daily podcast I would need to sort as follows
    Release date
    => Track
I know you can edit the tags.. I want to know if there is an easier/faster path then dumping the four hours into a running dumb playlist in the correct order.

Its a daily radio show. The way I deal with it now is to sort by release day then drop the tracks in the correct order into a normal playlist.
Is there a way to sort a smart playlist twice, for example in standard music, First by year then by track?

  • Smart Playlist plays in what order?

A couple of years ago I made a Smart Playlist that collects everything of the gendre "podcast." This lets me listed to the podcasts continuously, instead of stopping after each one.
I realize that I have no idea what order it's playing the podcasts in. It seems to be random, and when I go into the list in iTunes, sorting by each of the categories doesn't put them in the order they play.
Is there a "shuffle" option being applied to the list?

Adding "Playlist is Music" does not seem to be required on my iPhone or iPad, their playlists match the library that I auto-sync both devices to.
First, right-click on the playlist name in your iTunes library and select "Copy to play order".  That saves the sort order of the playlist, and if you don't do that then the sorting on your device may not be what you expect.
If that does not help some of your smart playlists, then right-click on the playlist name in iTunes and select "Duplicate".  Then get the new playlist sorted how you like and "lock" the sorting as described above, then delete the original playlist (re-name the copy if you'd like) and check/ change your sync settings to make sure the new playlist syncs to your device.
    Simon Chiplin wrote:
Adding the "Playlist is Music" rule does sort the order correctly but it loses the "live updating" feature on my iPhone which allows the list to be repopulated without syncing back to the PC.
Live Updating on the device has by and large been broken since iOS 3, unless you have a very simple smart playlist.  But if you include certain criteria like "Playlist Is ..." then Live Updating on the device doesn't work (even if the "source" playlist is synced to the device).  There are a few other smart criteria that break LU.

  • Genre sort in Browser, auto sync, sort order

I just updated to 3.1.1 and iTunes 9.0. Now Genre is missing in the browser. How can I get it back? Also none of my playlist sync in auto. I have to manually manage it. I rarely use it for music, just for listening to stories and podcasts, so it's important to have them in the correct order for listening, i.e. chapters. Now the playlist doesn't show up on the itouch sorted correctly.
    1. Doesn't have Genre in Browser. 2. Doesn't auto sync. 3. Sort order is messed up between iTunes and iTouch. 4. Is it caused by 3.1.1 or iTunes 9.0? Does anyone know how to fix these issues? I don't have an old download of iTunes 8 to uninstall 9 and reinstall 8. iTouch 3.1.1 can't be uninstalled. Shadow

iTunes 9 changed the browser to a column on the left side (by default), but you can go back to how it was on top, see the View/Column Browser menu. You can have multiple filters (Artist, Album, Composer, etc.) either as a column on the left, or across the top.
    shadow1953 wrote:

You have to be doing something wrong since auto-sync does work. Make sure your iPod is in auto-sync mode -- if you change the sync mode, make sure you click the "Apply" button -- if you don't, it won't change. If you're not syncing your entire library, then make sure that you've selected the playlists you want loaded onto the Touch.
    shadow1953 wrote:

Are you referring to the sort order within a playlist, or the sort order of all your playlist names? I know that the playlist name sorting has changed (again) such that punctuaion comes first, then letters, then numbers. If you're referring to the sort order of the items within a playlist, then it may be a bug -- there are reports of problems with the sorting of podcasts within playlists, so maybe the same is true for books?

    Not sure, could be either.

You can get down-rev versions of iTunes at sites like filehippo (there are others). Keep in mind though that your "iTunes Library.itl" file was changed with iTunes 9 and is not backward-compatible. You'll have to look for the old .itl file in your "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder (check the date of these .itl files). If you fid the .itl file from iTunes 8, just replace the current one and then uninstall iTunes as well as "Apple Mobile Device Services" and Quicktime, then install iTunes 8.
You can go back to a prior OS version on your Touch if you have the native file (you would if you previously did a firmware update, it stays on your computer). If you updated to 3.0 then you can go back to it by holding the SHIFT key as you click the Restore button (use the OPT key on a Mac) and then select the 3.0 version. You can't go back to 2.x in this manner, but there is a different way to go back to 2.x if you ever want to (won't go into that here).
