Sort priority of merged folders and worksets

Hi Forum!
I have a challenge, which I hope some of you can contribute to solving:
I'm trying to merge several roles, which have different structures, but I can't get the sorting to work. Here goes :
Structure of my different roles:
1 : Role -> Folder -> iView
2 : Role -> Folder -> Workset -> ....
I've setup merge ID's on the folders, so they merge fine into one top-level navigation item - no problem here.
But my problem is to control 2nd. level navigation. I can't set any navigational priorities on the iView directly attached to the folder, which leaves me without any possibility to control the sort-sequence on 2nd level. I already tried to insert a folder or workset in between the folder and iView level, but this also results in an additional navigation layer, which I don't want.
Any ideas, on how to solve this ?

Hi Claus,
the property you are looking for is called "Sort Priority" (or Sortierpriorität in German).
This property is available for iViews, pages, worksets and folders. SAP Help link
If none of the objects has a sort priority or all objects have the same priority the content is displayed in the order of appearance in the role. If some have a sort priority and some not the ones with prio are displayed first in the order of ther prio and then the rest...
Should work that way!

Merging folders and files in the Mountain Lion

After updated from Lion to Mountain Lion I can`t to merge folders using the key option/alt. I lost many important files doing this process. What the best solution to resolve this problem? I`m tired to find a solution for do it.

Merging Folders and Sub Folders.

this might be a stupid question.
let me just say i like backing up my music in folders on a drive that are more easily accessed than on time machine. and for many years ive had all my music backed up on 2 different backup drives. ive always just picked out everything that was new within the sub folders and moved them over.
is there a way to automatically merge all folders, subfolders, and files without re-copying everything??
for example. let me set this up. i have one folder on the Root drive Called "Music" the directory goes "Music/Artist/Album/Songs" etc.
if i want to copy all the new music without copying every single artist and album again by hitting replace, i have to go in and manually select new albums from existing artist folders and drop them in.
if that doesnt make sense... lets say i have an artist already in my library and i add a new album. it shows up in my itunes artist folder in another folder. but if i go into finder and select all artists and drag them into the backup disk "music" folder and it says.. "this folder already exitsts" Skip, Replace, Stop. or whatever. if i hit skip it will completly skip the new albums from existing artist folders and only add new artists from the "Music" Folder.
if there a way i can make it Merge and add every folder and file from new albums instead of skipping over them???

The only stupid question is one that you don't ask (my favourite saying from when I was an instructor)
Think of what you are trying to do more as adding to or removing from or changing a group of source files and folders and you want that structure "mirrored" to another drive. The rsync command is ideal for this; it compares the source and destination structures and makes the destination match the source by adding items to the destination if they aren't there, removing items from the destination if they are no longer on the source destination. In doing the comparison, it builds a list of what needs changing, so that only those things get copied, not everything.
it will work most conveniently for you if you make it copy your iTunes media folder, because then you only need to add your new album (for example) into iTunes and then use rsync twice, once for each backup drive. As an iTunes media folder is usually organised how you describe (artist/album/song), so you don't need to maintain your own separate structure, you'll simply have two extra copies of your iTunes media folder, one on each backup drive... Sound like what you want?
The downside to rsync for beginners is it's usage from the Terminal; it can be daunting, and for those new to the command line, the help can be cryptic sometimes. It's past midnight here and I need to crash, so if you want I can help you with it in 12 hours or so, just reply to let me know. In the meantime, if you want to use rsync, open Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and type man rsync. You can read up on it a bit; don't worry if you don't understand a lot of it at the moment, the purpose is to understand better the command we will be putting together when you finally see it. When reading man pages, hit F to go forward a page, B to go back and Q to quit.

Merge folders and sub folders

Let's say I've got two folders, each with the same name but on different drives, each with multiple subfolders containing multiple files. And many of the subfolders have the same name and contain many of the same files.
If I try to merge them by dragging one folder from drive A to the drive B there's a pop-up saying "The location to which you're restoring [folder name] already contains an item with the same name. Do you want to replace it with the one you're restoring?" and given options to Keep Original, Keep Both, or Replace.
Keep Original does nothing, Keep Both renames the folder on drive B and moves the folder from drive A over, Replace blows away the folder on drive B and moves the folder from drive A over.
Is there a way to actually merge them, keeping the unique files and renaming the collisions?

There isn't a way to do what you want in Finder.
I would suggest either learning to use rsync or use a folder syncing program such as Sync Two Folders. There are also several in the App Store. Search for sync folders in the Store.
I don't know if any will specifically Merge the two folders, but I assume they will.

I am trying to sort my documents into folders and name each document. Can this be done

I am new to Pages. I want to put different letters (documents) into a folder - is it possible to name each document within a folder?
Also, I have blank headed paper that I then pull in to use for letters but I then want to retain the blank headed paper afterwards. Is there any way of doing that as it appears that once I have used the headed paper for a letter, it gets filed as the new letter and I lose the blank headed paper.

How can I merge original and modified folders in iphoto library?

I see 2 folders within iPhoto library - originial and modified. Original folder keeps all pictures in original and modified has the edited version for picture I edit. So iPhoto basically keeps 2 version for any picture I modify, which takes a lot of space.
I would like to have just one copy for each picture (original picture or only modified version of the picture if I edit) - this way I think I would save a lot of memory. Could someone please advise
1. if there is any iPhoto settings that I change, so that it starts saving only 1 copy for each picture
2. If I could something with my already existing pictures - i.e. if there is a way I can delete "original" version of only those pictures for which "modified" version is available.

Don't use iPhoto.
Iphoto is a Digital Asset Manager designed to protect your original file at all costs. In other words it treats the original like a film shooter treats the negative. This is hard-wired into iPhoto, it's the very heart of the programme. If you don't want that feature, don't use iPhoto/
Note that there are different versions of the photo, they are not copies. The Original is required for the Non-Destructive editing feature in iPhoto.
So, specifically, no you cannot merge the two folders - and by the way, doing so won't save any memory at all, just some diks space.

If space is an issue: use an external drive for the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Or, just use an app that works the way you want.

In other words sort links A - Z but leave the Folders alone.
I have lots of Bookmark Links and folders but when i try to sort them it sorts the folders also.

Sorting folders and files in FINDER

I can sort folders and files alphabetically, chronologically, etc using LIST view, but not in any other view.
I seem to recall that FINDER used to sort alphabetically but now seems to sort randomly. I prefer to use the COLUMNS view.
In LIST view there are column headers NAME, DATE MODIFIED, SIZE, KIND and clicking on one will sort accordingly.
But these headers do not appear in the other views.

This can be done. If you want to arrange your files etc as columns...select "As Columns" from the "View" menu & then select "View Options" also from the "View" menu. It will then give you options as to how you wish to arrange your files etc.

we can change pages/workset/roles sort priority dynamically. But it will affect all users. There only one copy of pages/workset/roles exists.
The work around could be... You can develop a custom application in which you have predefine set of possible values.
example :
role (sort Priority)
1) employee (100)
2) Manager (200)
3) Sales Manager (300)
Create copy of Each role with different sort priority for all roles
for eg.
1) Employee (200)
2) Employee (300).
And in your web dynpro application assign roles according to users choice.
But It would be difficult to maintain roles. Because if you need to perform one change you need to apply them to their copies as well.

Setting the Sort Priority is not working

I have multiple roles where I have set the Complex workset under the roles as the Entry Point instead of the roles themselves. I also have set the Sort Priority to arrange the worksets as I want them. The issue is that the Sort Priority is not taking affect. Has anyone seen this issue before or have and idea on how to solve it?

Sorting of navigation nodes can be done in the Same Level.
Sort Priority is reserved from 1 - 10 for Administrative purpose.
So please make sure that you are sorting in a specific level by giving sort Priority from 10 onwards to 100.

Setting sort priority to 90.0 by default instead of standard 100.0

Hai,
I have requirement in which i have to upload some 100 roles from SAP R/3. When these 100 roles are imported, it will have sort priority 100.00. I have created a another Iview, that also has sort priority as 100.0 by default.
When I assign few of the roles and the Iview to a user this Iview is coming in between the roles. I want this Iview to be shown in the extreme right in Second Level Navigation. This I can do by changing the sort priority of 100 roles to 90.0. My users are not interested in changing 100 roles.
The below is the approach which I thought of doing but I don't know how to do it, please let me how to achieve this or is there any other way to do it.
When ever a object, role, IVIEW is created by default sort priority 100.0 is assigned to those object. I want to set that value to 90.0 So that when ever i create a new object the sort priority has the value 90.0.
Please let me know how to do this.

I am using Role Upload function in portal to upload roles for SAP R/3, after I upload the role, the uploaded role has sort priory 100.0. I want to have a sort prioriy as 90.0 when ever I upload a role or create a role.

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

Finder keeps changing the order of folders and documents. Is there a way to have everythning remain in alphabetical order? The way it works now makes it difficult to find a specific folder or doc from a long list.

In the Finder click the list icon and then sort by name. Is this what you mean?

Need advice. Is it necessary to put images in folders and subfolders with LR?

It seems that the concept of spending hours putting files into folders, sub-folders and sub-sub-folders is not needed with LR. Creating all these folders takes hours, especially if you are like me and need a major reorganization of image organization. My thought is that all images can go into one massive folder as long as they are properly tagged. I can then use LR Smart Collections to essentially virtually organize all my images. I can create many more sorting options using Smart Collections than I can by putting images into a folder. This flies in the face of everything I've learned about storing data on a computer so I'm nervouse to head this direction because it starts with unorganizing my folders and removing all tags so I can start fresh.
I don't want to take this on only to learn I didn't think of a gotcha issue. One drawback is that you are now committed to find anything by using LR or tags only. What do you think?

Actually, that is the way I would advise you to go. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the possible. It's not at all uncommon that people are put off beginning doing some keywording by the scale of the complete task. But beginning with the images that you're currently working on isn't too much extra effort. I'd advise you to do it only as and when you need - it's too big a task to do anything else. Let's say you need your best shots of Jewish weddings and - as you're currently keeping a lot of metadata in your head - you know some are in that untagged mass. Find them through the folder system as you do now, whack on some keywords like "Wedding, Jewish, Non-orthodox". All those shots are of the bride - whack on "Bride" (maybe from a keyword set). Hey, she's got an obvious tattoo - let's just add that keyword just in case it'll be useful. And quickly move on. Whatever seems worthwhile.
Although scripting could help, where's the script? Worthwhile to write/adapt one yourself? Instead for folder names I'd just just smart collections to gather image - eg folder name contains "weddings" - and then slap on the keywords. Sure, there will be some duplication between the pseudo-metadata in the folder names and in keywords, but duplication happens with metadata. In fact, it'll be quicker to search by the keyword "Wedding" than search for images with the keyword "Wedding" and / or with the folder name containing "Wedding".
So that's how I'd advise you - start with the new work, and deal with the older stuff ad hoc.
