Sorting a PDF document

Hey all,
we have got an PDF document with 10200 pages. This includes 1.700 invoices, each of them consisting of 6 pages.
Unfortunatly the invoices are not sorted.
Is there any chance to sort the invoices according to the customer ID metioned on the first page of each invoice?
Kinds regards,
Lukas

For that many pages it sounds like a full day of work. It might be possible to write a JavaScript to find the custID and then move pages based on that info. However, such a script would probably not be trivial. The folks in the SDK or JavaScript forums might be able to help.

  • How to sort pdf documents by modified date using Javascript action

    Hello,
I want to use a Javascript action to sort multiple pdf documents in a folder before I run a Javascript action that prints the last page of multiple pdf documents.  I received help from this forum on the last page print script and it works perfectly.  The downside is it prints in default NAME order and I need them to print in accending DATE MODIFIED order.  I'm not sure if the sort function could be incorporated into the print script or if it would be a seperate code/action.
This is the script to print the last page of several pdf documents:
    this.print
    ({bUI: false,
    nStart:this.numPages-1,
    bSilent: true,
    bShrinkToFit: true});
I would appreciate help from anyone that is willing to share the code to "sort by DATE MODIFIED".
    Adobe Acrobat 10 Pro
    Windows 7
    Thank you in advance,
    David C.

I'm not a code writer.  I'm trying to streamline some operations here at work.  The original code assistance was to print the last page of several pdf documents (sometimes as many as 100 to 150 at a time) without having to open each file, scroll to the bottom, Ctrl-P, current page, Print.  Can't express how beneficial it was to get that to work.  I realize I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth, but when it prints out, it would be great to have them print in DATE MODIFIED order since they are kept in processed order rather than alpha order.
If the two processes are too labor intensive I fully understand and appreciate all the assistance thus far.  I was hoping it would be as simple as the first script coding to do the actual printing.
    Thanks,
    David C.

When you say field, do you mean specifically a form field, such as a text field? Or is the information regular text on the page?

  • Error while exporting to PDF document in OBIEE 11g

    Hi
In OBIEE 11g we are facing an issue regarding exporting a few reports to pdf. It is resulting in following error: "Error generating PDF document".
The reports are placed on a dashboard which has a prompt too. However, when we remove the prompts, the export is working fine.
We will really appreciate any help in this regard.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Looks like this is a sort of known bug with PDF creator in 11g. Try implementing the below solution:
To configure the Javahost service, edit the Javahost service configuration parameters in the
    instanceconfig.xml file. The parameters are
identified by their relative path starting from the /WebConfig/ServerInstance node
    For example:
    <JavaHost>
    <PDF>
    <InputStreamLimitInKB>50000</InputStreamLimitInKB>
    </PDF>
    </JavaHost>
After changes restart Siebel Analytics Java Host and Siebel Analytics Web services
If it doesn't work try to create same report in xml publisher as presentations services in obiee has limited capacities in printing out reports.
Refer to this thread for related useful information: Error in creating a PDF
    Hope it helps.
    Thanks,

  • How do you apply the same password policy to every PDF document you create with inDesign?

    All,
    Adobe peeps!,
I don't know if this is really supported with inDesign 5.5, but here is my my use case:
I constantly create more than 10 PDFs a day using inDesign
On  all PDF's I create, i want to apply password security to protect them
But in order to do so, within inDesign, I am   always forced to go to the "security dialogue" pane to set up the same permission  and passwords over and over again
    This gets tiring :/
So what I am hoping to do is  the following:
Like acrobat, I want to create a password policy within inDesign
I want all PDFs created to have such a password policy  be automatically applied
I know acrobat supports something like this (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7d68.w.h tml), but, unless I may have missed something, the Acrobat feature is limited. That is, the help link  does not tell me how to automatically do this with Acrobat either (the link does not explain to me how to "automatically apply the same password security policy to every PDF document I save within the application). I think the only way to do so is via "Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management ES", but for non server users, I am hoping there is another way.
    So my questions are:
Is it possible to create password security policies in inDesign?
Is it possible to apply the same password security policy to every PDF i create in inDesign?
If not, can I change default settings within Acrobat ProX to automatically apply a password security policy everytime I save a PDF?
If all fails, do you guys know of any extensions that can support this?
Any help would be great. Thanks!

    Steve,
Thanks for your notes. To follow up on your response.
Bummer. I kinda had a hunch at this inDesign limitation.
I have been aware of the method for setting up of a security policy within Acrobat. While this feature does cut down some of the work involved in creating and applying password policies to pdfs, what I am looking for with Acrobat is to apply the same password policy to every document I save from the app. Automatically. Without having to manualy select a policy.
I think my solution will have to lie in me creating some sort of script to help support this need. I don't think Acrobat Pro X has the capabilities to allow me to tinker with, say, creating a save PDF preset that will allow me to automatically apply a password policy.
PS. I am using acrobat pro x.

  • Looking for a way to re-organize pages within a PDF document....

    Hello All.....
First time posting here and a new user to Acrobat X Pro so bear with me as I try too explain my issue. I receive via email, a weekly PDF report for work that contains up to 200 pages in each file. Each page is basically a "Lead" that contains, in order of importance as they relate to me; an upcoming date in time and Trustee information. When I open up this file the pages are listed in chronological order by date only and cover a time-period of about 5 days. The trustees information is randomly placed through-out the document, so pages 1, 3, 5, and 10 may be one trustee and pages 2, 4, 6, and 9 may be another trustee. Complicating matters is there are upwards of 12 trustees information spread through-out every report. So..... if the 1st 50 pages of this PDF document are for 3/6/2012, all of the trustee's information is randomly scattered through-out these 50 pages. Make sense?? Here is what I am attempting to do.....
First, I am extracting all of the pages of this report that have the SAME DATE and creating a new file. When this is done the extracted pages are then deleted out of the original file. If the original report contained information covering 4 days, at the end of this step I have 4 new files; and this is where I am getting hung up. What I was hoping to do now, is go into each file and rearrange the pages to be in order of the Trustees information. I have tried the "Advanced Search" function which will allow me to search the entire file for a trustees information, which works. I just can't figure out if there is something I can do after that. I would't even mind creating another file similiar to what I am doing above for each trustee, but unfortunately that extraction only works if the pages are in 1,2,3... chronological order. Going through and extracting each page one-at-a-time would be cumbersome and time consuming at best, so that is not an option. Does anyone have any thoughts?? And please feel free to ask me for more information. I was hoping to be able to upload a sample page of this report for you all to see, but it appears that you can't upload a PDF file... Go figure!! Thank you for your time.....
    Justin

There are several ways to handle a task like this, and a custom script is certainly one of them.  It looks like you are using a Mac, though, so that will limit your options somewhat.  As a result, I'll stick with Acrobat's native features for a solution.  I am going to assume that you have Excel, though, as it's the real key to solving this problem.  Notepad can be substituted for any text editor.
My understanding is that you want to end up with a document that contains the entries for each particular Trustee, listed in chronological order.  It's not clear to me what specific form your output document should take, but I'll give you enough information to solve the problem, and you can adjust from there.
First, rather than deal with the problem by date, I would do it by the Trustee's name, instead.  They're already in chronological order, so no need to reinvent the wheel.  Someone did that work for you!  So, in the advanced search function you're already using, search for all of the Trustees at the same time with a multi-term search.  You can create this in a text file that you can re-use in the future.  Next, save the results to a CSV file.  Open the CSV in Excel, and delete all of the extraneous content except for the "page" and "seach instance" columns, which should ultimately occupy columns A and B, starting at row 1.  Next, sort the search instance column (Trustee names) either A to Z or Z to A (however you want them grouped for output), and then by page number, in asecnding order.  This will leave you with a new page order from which you can extract the pages that contain your Trustee names, which will inherently be in chronological order.
Next, take the column of page numbers, copy, and paste special, transposing the data into a single row on a new worksheet in Excel.  Delete the initial worksheet, then save the CSV.  Finally, open the CSV file with Notepad, and you'll see that you now have a row of page numbers, separated by commas.  Copy that data and paste it into the pages field of the print dialogue in Acrobat, which will allow you to print those specific pages, in that specific order, to a new PDF.  If you had a page splitter script (like the kind try67 makes) or plug-in, that would be a little more efficient, but either way take you to the same place.
In the end, you'll have a subset of the pages in your original, 200 page PDF, "sorted" by Trustee, with each Trustee's data sorted chronologically.  If you want to break them out by Trustee, just create a bookmark at the first page of each Trustee's data (perhaps referring back to the CSV in Excel) and split the file out by bookmark with Acrobat.
I have used similar methods to complete tasks that range from impractical to impossible in my book, "The PDF Litigation Guide."  Hope that helps!

  • Problem with viewing Adobe PDF documents

Problem with viewing Adobe PDF documents
I have a Windows 7 Home Premium Computer
I have read all the suggestions and I have tried downloading multiple versions of Adobe Reader for Windows 7 and Vista from http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/.
Prior to downloading each version I would delete the current version using  control panel programs uninstall.
After each new installation I would shut down the computer and then restart the computer.
I have tried downloading versions with and without having my antivirus (CA Total Defence) running.
I am told after download that the version downloaded successfully.
I have read Acrobat Help http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-reader-installation-windows.html and followed the instructions.
None of the above has helped.
The problem is no matter what version of Adobe Reader I download, I cannot seem to open a PDF and read it. Nor will the Reader itself stay open.
    1. If I try opening the reader from the desktop link or from the actual program menu, the reader opens for about 5 seconds and then closes of its own accord. If I try to click on any of the reader menus (eg File, Edit, View, Window, Help, Tools) then a warning bell is sounded and the menu does not open. Shortly thereafter the reader closes.
    2. If I try to open the reader by double clicking on a PDF document then the reader opens but the document is not shown (only the grey PDF reader screen is shown) and then the reader closes after about 5 seconds of its own accord.
The desktop shortcut shows as the 'red Adobe Reader icon'. But the actual program menu icon shows as a blank folder icon.  All PDF documents show as the PDF Adobe icon.
I have tested various PDFs and none will open on this computer but they will open on other computers.
I have created a word document and saved it as a PDF. It looked like it had save correctly (has the appropriate icon) but when I try to open it as per step 2 above then the document is not shown and then the reader closes after about 5 seconds of its own accord.
Does anyone have any ideas about what is going on and how I can fix this?
Could you please answer in this forum and email me at [removed]
I am so puzzled and frustrated.

Thank you so much this did the trick.
I spent so many hours on trying to sort this out and your answer was so  simple and clear.

  • PDF document apparently not created, because it does not appear

I am temporarily booting up from a cloned backup of my hard drive located on an external hard drive, because my G4 Powerbook (containing my actual hard drive) is being repaired.  I use Acrobat Standard 7.0, on a Tiger operating system (Mac OS X v. 10.4.11).
Normally, I create a PDF version of a Word document by simply printing it to PDF -- selecting “Adobe PDF 7.0” in the Print dialogue.  Briefly after hitting “print,” a PDF document named “TemporaryCustom_PS_File” appears on the desktop.  Now, however, no PDF document of any sort appears -- on the desktop or anywhere else I can detect.  (A smart search reveals no relevant document has been newly created or modified, or appropriately named, etc.)
I am hopeful this problem will not continue when and if I am again able to use my hard drive.  But, in the meantime, how can I rectify this?

PS: Perhaps I should add that I am printing from a CLASSIC version of Word, so the print dialogue box does not offer such things as “PDF options,” “Save as PDF,” or even “Copies & Pages.”  It is very basic -- just identifies the printer as “Adobe PDF 7.0” and lets me choose a page range.  (Only “destinations” available are “Printer” and “File.”)

  • Can't Attach PDF Document to Outlook 2010 X64

    I am using Adobe Reader 9.4.1 on a Windows 7 Ultimate X64 with Office 2010 Pro X64.
My  Outlook 2010 is already set as the default email client (and works  perfectly when attaching files to email using the "sent to email  recipient" with all other software installed on my machine).
When  I try to attach a PDF document to an email, within the Adobe Reader, I  first get a Windows 7 generated message saying I need to set default  email client (although I already did it) and after I press ok, I get an  Adobe Reader error message simply saying the there was an error with  attaching the document.
I read in this forum that as of  August 2010 the Adobe Reader doesn't support 64 bit (Windows 7 &  Office 2010) which sounds as false. I think that it can't be so...
I have to mention that I had the exact same problem with a different software (Nuance OmniPage Professional 17) and after searching Google for it I found a solution in editing the software's ini files and it solved the issue. Obviously I don't know how to find this solution by myself (I am not a PC programmer or something like that) but I have a good feeling that there should be some sort of a solution like that to the problem on hand.
    Please help....

  • Unable to print PDF documents & then unable to download Adobe Reader

    Help,
I tried to print a PDF document this morning and received the message "The document could not be printed". I clicked OK and received a further message "There were no pages selected to print". My printer will still print word documents, emails and DVD covers produced using Nero Cover Design Essentials.
I have the latest version of Adobe reader 11.0.07. I went to the Adobe site and repaired Adobe Reader but it made no difference.
I therefore decided to uninstall Adobe Reader and reinstall it from the Adobe site. It downloaded OK but when I tried to install it I got the following message "Error: General Installation Error". I was using Mozilla Firefox so tried the same with Internet Explorer, with the same result.
I then downloaded the full Adobe reader from File Hippo, but still got an error message when I tried to install it (see below).
So I have gone from bad to worse and don't even have Adobe reader on my PC any more. The problem only surfaced this morning and last night I uninstalled two programs I decided I didn't need any more; Auslogics Disc Defrag and AVG PC Tuneup, but don't understand how uninstalling them could have caused the problem.
    Regards,
    Barry

    Hi again Pat,
I checked the permissions in my Temp folder and there were none. So I ticked all the boxes, but when I ticked OK I got the permission denied message again, so the problem is still tied to me not having administrator privileges. Strange thing is that even though I was denied permission, the boxes still stayed ticked. However nothing has changed as far as my problems are concerned.
It would appear to me that the answer is to get my administrator privileges back, but I have been unsuccessful in that so far. I purchased a complete PC from a good supplier but the Windows 7 setup disc that came with it does not have the "Repair Your Computer" function on it, which I understand would allow me to sort out my administrator privileges? When I rang Microsoft and asked if there was any way I could obtain that function, by download or otherwise, they weren't at all interested as I hadn't purchased Windows 7 directly from them.
As for downloading Adobe Reader via the MSI folder, I don't need to do that because when I recovered my backup from an earlier period I once more had Adobe Reader. I can use Adobe Reader to open a PDF document but it would appear I must have administrator privileges in order to print a PDF document, which was how the situation was before I decided to uninstall Adobe Reader and download a new version. I can print any other type of document so obviously Adobe demands more before it will allow printing.
In the early stages I also downloaded Foxit Reader, as I had read good things about it, but again, for the same reasons, I could not install it.
I have googled "problem with loss of admin privileges" and got a lot of hits. I will try some of the suggestions that don't appear too complex, but if they fail I will go back to the supplier. I have to sort it. I have seen suggestions about starting a new account but am not sure what to do there, or indeed, if I should do that.
Thanks for all the attempts to help me so far,
    Barry

Before viewing PDF documents in this browser you must launch Adobe Reader and accept the End User License Agreement, then Quit and relaunch the browser.
I have tried to relaunch adobe but still keep getting same message. I can however download file and then open it with preview but would like to get this sorted!!

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • PDF Documents suddenly display as black only

Earlier this year I suddenly had numerous PDF documents start displaying completely black, making it impossible to read the text. Sometimes images appear as ghosted white outlines, but most commonly the whole document is simply a black blob. I can open the same file using a free PDF Reader, but the moment I try opening it in Adobe Acrobat Reader Pro it appears in black again. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling version 9.2, and have now updated to 9.5, but am still getting the same error.
I have no idea of where else to look to find a solution. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds sort of like a display problem. Are the preferences that you have set under Edit > Preferences > Page Display category in the Rendering area any different in Reader than they are in Acrobat Pro? Also in the same Preference category make sure you have Use Overprint Preview set to Never.
Also you can try checking under the Edit > Preferences > Accessibility category to make sure some of these setting haven't been inadvertently set.

  • Protecting and tracking PDF documents?

    Hello!
We are about to build our new website and need to find a solution to make downloadable PDF documents available for both clients and registered members of our (3) new website(s).
A colleague I spoke to, however, told me that we need to find a solution of some sort to protect against unwanted distribution of the PDF documents that we make available through our website(s).
Initially, I had no idea of how to do this since this is a major issue for companies around the globe that are already struggling with piracy, but he then mentioned something about the Adobe Tracker software.
Does anyone know if that is possible through Adobe Tracker? I've read a bit about this software, but it seemed very vague on what it is it really does?
Perhaps any expert Adobe Acrobat users in here can help me with some answers on this particular topic.
    Thank you very much!

    Thanks, Dave.
I am about to start building our new company website on the WordPress platform, and we would like to add a feature that enables registered users to be able to download select PDF documents that we will offer to our clients, users, etc.
We are just looking for some fairly efficient way of protecting these PDF documents. I have found a plugin for WordPress called 'WP PDF Stamper', maybe that will help us a bit with this issue.
I guess we could make it work with doing it two ways:
    1) Require user registration in order to gain download privileges (items are "free", but then we at least get some information about our users in return for the "free" items we provide)
    2) Secure & Watermark our PDF documents to ensure that the content cannot be copied nor printed.
How does that sound? Something I'm missing?
    Cheers!

  • Adobe Reader 9.4 has started to open all my PDF documents continuously

Recently, every time I open Adobe Reader, or click on a PDF document on file to open it, Reader starts opening all PDF documents on file continuously until I get a message saying there are too many open documents to open any more.  The only way out appears to be use of force quit.
Have I picked up some kind of virus, or is there just a setting that I need to change?

Oddly, it sort of sounds like app behavior under Mac OS X Lion.  Lion has a feature called Resume that puts an app that is launched into the state it was in when it last quit.  So, if certain documents were open when it last quit, those documents would "resume" (re-open automatically) the next time the app is launched.
Now, your profile info says you have a PowerPC iMac running Leopard (and you are posting the "iMac (PPC)" forum), so this should not apply.  But maybe you are running Lion on a newer Mac and your profile info is old.  Or maybe Adobe Reader has been updated to have a restore open documents feature.  In that case, if you accidentally selected all in a folder full of many PDF files and opened them all, and then you quit Reader in that state, that "state" may have been saved for the next time you launched Reader. By closing each document manually, and then quitting Reader, you changed the state when last quit to having no open documents.
If this happens again (in any app), these commands may be useful to know:
There is usually a Close command under the File menu (in the Menu Bar).  If you press the Option key, that command changes to Close All.  So if an app unintentionally opens a very large number of windows (and it is not locked up as a result), you can give the Close All command instead of manually closing each window.
In Lion, if you press (and hold) the Shift key while launching an app, the app launches with a "clean slate" (ignoring the state when it last quit).  I don't know if that would have worked in your case, but it would have been worth a try.  Sorry I did not think of it before; I did not see the possible connection to the Resume feature.
