Sorting multidimensional arrays

I have an array containing random dates, each in its own
small array of which the first node is the month and the second the
year:
var arr:Array = [
[1,2008],
[2,2009],
[6,2009],
[4,2008],
[4,2008]
I am trying to write a sorting function to use with
arr.sort() that will use the year AND month nodes to arrange the
dates chronologically. Can't get it to work though, anyone have any
advice?

So I solved it myself about 30 seconds after posting. Doh!
I came up with this method which seems to work:
function order(a, b)
if(a[1] < b[1])
return -1;
else if(a[1] > b[1])
return 1;
else
if(a[0] < b[0])
return -1;
else if(a[0] > b[0])
return 1;
else
return 0;
Would be interested to know if anyone has a better approach
or any thoughts as the whole sorting issue as I am doing a project
that might involve a lot of it.

    Please help. I am very new to java and trying to build a multidimensional array. I have two variables 1)item_name and 2)item_value. These are values that I obtain by looping through a database result set. I need to build and array that can hold these variables. Once the multidimensional array is built I need to be able to sort it by item value.
    For example I would like to do something like this:

    Don't use a multidimensional array. Use an array of objects, where the objects are of a class that you define. It might be something as simple as class Item that just has two fields--name and value--and their getters and setters. Or maybe just getters if you want the class to be immutable.
    Have the class implement Comparable and sort on value.
    If you sometimes want to sort on value and sometimes on name, then you'll need to either define two Comparators (one for name, one for value) or make the class Comparable on whichever is the more "natural" ordering and define a Comparator for the other one.
    Either put them in an array and use one of the java.util.Arrays.sort methods to sort them, or put them in a List (java.util.LinkedList or java.util.ArrayList) and use Collections.sort to sort them.

    Bubble sort the array. I want to keep the data organized. So, 70 with aa, 20 with cc, 40 with ee and so foth.

    i have a question that's seems silly but i'm stuck in it since yesterday !
    i'm developping a small application with ms kinect sdk 1.7 and when detecting skeleton and all joints are tracked i want to save it into multidimensional array of (20,3) which are respectively the number of joints in human body and the coordinates along
    the 3 axes. 
    my goal is to calculate after that the max and the min values throught the 3 axes.. so i began with this piece of code.

    The issue you are having is not specific to the Kinect SDK. You will need to look into your managed code construction of the array since that is not valid. There are ways to create a single array of a structure which you can then provide your own enumeration.
    You may want to look at the generic collections of .Net to see what would be best since you will way to provide some logic to the sort since the points in space will need to calculate a length.

  • I need to sort an array of strings based on the number in each string.

    Basically, I have a directory of files that all have the same name but each with a different number on the end.
    example: image 1.jpg, image 2.jpg, etc.
    When I use the List Directory function that returns an array of strings containing the file names in the directory, they don't come out in a 1, 2, 3, order like they appear in the directory. It sorts them character by character so that they come out like: 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 2, 20, 21, 22 etc.
    Is there a simple way of sorting this array of strings with the file names (as above) so that they are in numerical order?

    It's a while since this thread was started, but I am sure others will have use for this so here goes:
    The in-built array sort function sorts the strings the same way DOS and Windows do. Microsoft has fixed this in the Explorer that comes with XP, however the rest of the OS(s) still sorts the old way.
    The attached "AlphaLogical String Array Sort" VIs will sort strings arrays the same way as the new XP Explorer. There are three different implementations of the sorting, one based on the Insertion sort algorithm, a Quick Sort based on recursive calls (the most elegant way, but unfortunately LabVIEW has too much overhead when doing recursive calls so this is actually a very slow alternative) and finally the fastest; a stack based Quick Sort. There is also a test VI that will show you how the different implementations perform.
    I had not used recursive calls in LV much until I made the attached quick sort and was a bit disappointed by the fact that it is so slow, but it's a good learning example...The ability to do recursive calls this way was introduced in LV7 I believe...There is an example here on the zone that shows how you can calulate a factorial by using recursive calls, however - unlike for the quick sort (normally) - recursive calls are actually not the optimal solution for that calculation.

    Look in to passing user defined type back and forth to Oracle. Any type that oracle supports, you can constract on the java side and send it across. Look into the SQLData class.

  • Sorting an array of objects and returning another variable

    Hi there,
    Bit stuck on this one I wonder if anyone can help..
    I have an object array into which I've pushed a number of objects with different variables :-
    myArray.push({myRef: 1, myValue: "W"});
    I can sort the array in numerical order using :-
    myArray.sortOn("myRef", Array.NUMERIC);
    but after sorting I would like to collapse the array using something along the lines of :-
    myArray.join("");
    to join the OTHER variable (myValue)...
    Is it possible to do this without pushing every instance of 'myValue' to another array and then joining that ?

    If you add myType to the array then you can sort on that, assuming you have different values for myType.
    According to PeopleBooks (8.51), API documentation;
    Sort(order)
    Note. This method works with arrays that have only one or two dimensions. You receive a runtime error if you try to use this method with an array that has more than two dimensions.

  • Bindind data to multidimensional Array

    I have a multidimensional Array (3D). I have some fields which I want to bind to some TextInputs:
    model.creditosConsumoModel.literaturaCredito[i][j][k]
    And here's a example of the data binding:
    text="{(model.creditosConsumoModel.literaturaCredito[4][12][0] as Apartado).texto}"
    The problem is: When I do a: model.creditosConsumoModel.literaturaCredito = new Array and I define the Array again with new data everything gets blank (all the text Inputs) and I loss the information.
    Resume: It only works the first time, but not the rest of the times.

    Generally, for something like this, I make a wrapper object and set the values on that so I don't have to deal with issues like this.  I'm not sure how architecturally sound it is, but it sounds like you are trying to take small pieces of data and prepare them for your view, in which case a wrapper/adapter would provide you with the benefits of databinding.

  • Sort Grid array and find the 4 corner dots.

    What I am trying to do is this:  I am using NI Visions find circles vi on a grid array or dots which gives me a 1D array of clusters.  In these clusters is the x,y coordinates of the grid dots that have been found.  I need to figure out which ones are the 4 corner dots and the 4 center dots along the edges.  The problem is the 1D array the find circle routine outputs is not in a logical order.  My grid could possibly change in size too.  Right now it is 14x12 but could be 13x12 or 14x13 or something like that. 
    I have found that if I send the 1D array of clusters though the sort 1D array it will sort it from top to bottom left to right, which I will then know that teh 1st element is the top left corner and the last element is the bottom right corner, but I am not sure what the easiest way is to figure out the rest of them. 
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Brad,
    If you want to get the coordinates of specific dots on the image, you
    can search for the dots using different ROIs that only focus on certain
    areas of the image (ex: use an ROI that only searches in the
    upper-right corner so that you know the 1 match that shows up is
    definitely there).  Without knowing how consistent the dot
    locations are, I would suggest dividing up the ROI dimensions based on
    the variable size of the grid.

    oui, j'avais remarqué ... si on place le string en 1er dans le Cluster ... la fonction accepte.
    Dans ce cas, le tri s'effectue sur le string et la fonction ne tient pas compte de la présence de la ref.
    Dans l'absolu, vouloir "trier" des references entre elles n'a pas de sens.
    Il faudrait trier l'équivalent U32 .... cela, à mon sens, est vide de sens.
    par contre la fonction "recherche" accepte une Ref. ... mais rechercher une référence a du sens.
    Les fonction "Tri" et "Recherche" ont toutes les deux cette même phrase dans leur "doc_help" respective.
    "accepte un Tableau de n'importe quel type".
    Pour la fonction "recherche", c'est parfaitement juste ... pour la fonction "Tri", cette phrase est fausse.
    Je voulais pointer la doc qui parfois est lègèrement erronée.
    Petit défaut de ma part, je suis perfectionniste ... mais je me soigne.
    En fait, je suis perfectionniste uniquement pour ce qui a une réelle importance pour moi.
    Pour le reste, je peux laisser tout pourrir en tas et enjamber le chose ... sans le moindre scrupule

    Alright i am doing a program for my java class. The book doesnt tell me much and the teacher didnt either cause we had a midterm to take. Alright in this program i have to write a java program that produces a wind chill chart with temperatures from 50 to -50 degrees f in steps of 10 degrees, with wind speeds from 5 to 50mph, in steps of 5mph. The following formula may be useful.
    windchill= ((10.45+6.686112 * sqrt(windspeed)- .447041 * windspeed)/22.034)*(temperature- 91.4) + 91.4
    use for statements in your program and a function to calculate the wind chill factor at a given temperature and wind speed.
    I know im gonna have to use multidimensional arrays to do this problem, unless someone has an easier way to do it. I am really stuck. I have this so far.

  • Multidimensional Array in Indesign?

    Hey guys,
    normally in javascript I can just create a multidimensional array like so:
    myArray = [ [] ];
    and then assign values like this:
    myArray[0][0] = 'item1';
    In extendscript I get the error "undefined is not an object". Is there something I forgot about, or is this just not possible in Indesign?

    I found out it was another problem. The code works like this, but you need to define in the beginning how many arrays are in the array. Otherwise it will throw the "undefined" error.
    points = new Array(object.paths.length);
    for(i = 0 ; i<object.paths.length; i++){
        points[i] = new Array();
    This code works now, as the length of the array is exactly the length you need. And for every key you add another array, to create your two dimensional array on every key.

  • Dynamic screen changes in adobe form

    Hi Experts, I have an adobe form with a form type radio button. Based on the form type selected (radio button), some of the fields on the adobe form should become editable and some uneditable. How is it achievable? Please advise. Thanks, Shobhit
