Sorting Outline using Maxl

Hi All,
I need some help. I am building the outline using essbase studio. When the "Period" Dimension is created the dates are in random order. I want to sort the Period dimension using some automation ( like maxl...) . Its an ASO cube.

That is a studio thing. On the right hand side of the screen are the metadata members. whatever member you use for period, edit it and you will see a sort option. add the column that makes sense to sort on. For example if you your periods are in a column called period_Num, then I know this will give me the periods in numeric order. But if you are bringing in periodname (ie jan, feb, etc0 you will want to pick the column that will give you them in number order.

Setting a outline for a application using maxl

We are using maxl to load data into essbase application/db. We have a predefined otl file. How do I programmatically set the otl file as the outline for my application. I know that I can use shell to copy the otl file to the appropriate app folder. I am using Maxl from a remote machine. Hence, I do not have access to the folders on the server machine.Thanks a lot for your help.Sridevi

1.The best way would be, ftp the otl file to specified location, if you have access. Get shared ftp access to the specific folder.2.You can try the copy the db or app using Essbase Command.I dont think there any other alternative ways out.

There is no way to alter an outline with MaxL, MaxL is an admin language for processing. The only option, as Glenn mentioned is to issue the reset all command to blow away everything. But you probably don't want to do that, so instead you use Maxl to run a series of load rules to achieve your goal.
Load rules do not have functionality to delete outline members, it does have a feature however that allows you to remove unspecified members from a dimension build, so when loading in your members, if existing members are not in the import, they are removed. So Glenn's point was to create a source file with a single dummy member. When you load using "Remove Unspecified" it will delete all the members and just keep the one dummy member. Then when you go back a second time and actually load the real members, the dummy member will be removed and you will have a clean dim with only your new members. This is a work around solution, but it's what a lot of people do.
Now if you have 15 dimensions you need to do this with, you might want to take a slightly different approach. I'm assuming 15 dimensions is probably an ASO cube and this method will be preferable to avoid outline fragmentation.
Create a copy of your outline with all the base dimensions that do not change intact. For the ones that do change, just have your dim root member. Consider this your starting outline template and save a copy of it. When you want to rebuild your cube have a server process that takes the copy of your template outline and copies it over your existing outline file in the directory structure. Then run your load rules to import your new members.

Error: 1030001 while Dimension Building using MaxL

Hi, I am bulding dimesions using MaxL import statement. My script builds the diemsions properly. But in Logfile, It shows this error without generating any error files. ...... ..... OK/INFO - 1021000 - Connection With SQL Database Server is Established. OK/INFO - 1021002 - SQL Connection is Freed. OK/INFO - 1007132 - Building Dimensions Elapsed Time : [0.781] seconds. ERROR - 1241101 - Unexpected Essbase error 1030001. OK/INFO - 1019017 - Reading Parameters For Database [Drxxxxxx]. OK/INFO - 1019012 - Reading Outline For Database [Drxxxxxx]. ...... ... Can anybody can help me out with it? I know that Error: 1030001 is geneated due to API or path problems, I checked all paths, all is good. Thanks in advance, Marma

We are getting this error too. I believe that the error occurs because Essbase tries to evaluate outline before you finish building all of your dimensions. To me, it should be a Warning, not an Error. But my experience with Essbase is that anything that has to do with GUI or presentation of information to its developers (non-scrollable text boxes, log info, etc.) is lousy, so this is not a surprise. I had to build a logic in my batch programs to ignore this error when parsing log file for errors in execution. Hope you can do the same.

Delete Attribute Dimension Using MAXL

Copying substitution varibale using Maxl script

Hi,
Ive been trying to copy application using Maxl script in essbase to take backups. Everything gets copied except substitution variables. Could some one help me in sorting out this issue.
Is there any specific Maxl Command to copy substitution variable alone from one application to another, if so could u please share it with me.

Hi,
Unfortunately, as John said, there is no command to copy the subvars. One of my colleagues ran into this same issue on one of my projects. He ended up spooling a script with display variable all command to show all your variables and write them to a text file. from there he wrote a batch file to parse the text file for each of the variables, and then updated the subvars in the backup application with these values.
The thing you want to look out for here is that you want to make sure you properly handle checking for whether the subvar already exists in the backup application. If it does, you just want to run an update of the value. If it doesn't exist, you want to add it first. This is because there is no create or replace variable, so to avoid any errors, you need to be careful with that. I think you may want to look into some of the other alternatives John provided if you are still looking into this issue.

Sorting members using Load Rule Parent Child Method

Hi all,
I have a Product Dimension with around 7 gen's and wanted to sort Gen 3 members under parent (say CommProduct). All these members are initially loaded using Studio and i am trying sort Gen 3 members using a text file / Load Rule (Parent Child Method). I have "Allow Moves" ,"Allow Property Changes" and member sorting: None checked for the load rule. I tried updating the outline using the load rule, however the outline remains unchanged and members sorted by alphabets.

Can't you create a column where you can specify the desired order and build accordingly. I don't think you can achieve that using a load rule. Allow moves works only if the members are under a different parent. In your case it is the same parent.

Cannot Connect to Essbase Server Using MaxL

After installing and configuring planning. I was able to create data source and application. When I shot down and restart the machine. The diagnostics report highlighted these srrors
EPMVAL - 01010 can not connect to Essbase server using MaxL
Network Error - 10061 unable connect to oracle.vision.com:1423. the client timed out waiting to connect Essbase Agent using TCP/IP

Script to export Security file using maxl script

can anyone provide me the Script to export Security file using maxl script.It should create a log file and a batch file should also be there to schedule the Maxl script.Please help me with this

Hi,
You can use something like
[b]login admin password on localhost;
[b]spool on to 'c:\temp\log.txt';
[b]export security_file to data_file C:\temp\sec_file.txt;
[b]spool off;
[b]logout;
Then you can have a batch file that just calls the maxl script
essmsh name_of_maxl_script.mxl
The batch script can then be scheduled.

Dataload error using MaxL on LINUX

I'm using Essbase 11.1.2.1 & working on ASO cube. I'm trying to load the data using Maxl on LINUX.
This is the following error: essmsh error: End of File breaks the Statement.

Raw input simply isn't supported for the USB devices. I would guess that the situation for Linux is the same, since DAQmx Base is based on Labview code in order to achieve cross-platform portability. See the thread

Be sure to read down to where there is a message indicating that support for USB devices is planned for NI-DAQmx. Of course, that won't help on Macintosh and Linux.

Looking for one information regarding sorting XML using XSLT , with the sorted XML as output. For eg. my XML is :

Clear the data region using Maxl

I am trying to clear the data region using Maxl query, I am getting error like: Dynamic members not allowed in data clear region specificaion.
+alter database 'PGSASO'.'ASOPGS' clear data in region 'CrossJoin(CrossJoin({[Actual]},{[FY11]}),{[Inputs].Levels( 0 ).Members})';+
(Inputs( not a dynamic member, parent of this meber is a dynamic) comes under Account dim).
I have tried the below code also(Syntax error in input MDX queryon line 1 at token ',').
alter database 'PGSASO'.'ASOPGS' clear data in region 'CrossJoin([Inputs].Levels(0), CrossJoin({[ACT]},{[FY11]}))';
Can anyone do let me know if there is any syntax error or alternate function would be available for clearing level-0 members/descendants under Dynamic parent...

There is no syntax error in your statement. The problem is you input dimension(I guess) has some members with formulas on them and the clear statement does not allow those members to be in the clear. Ther ware a couple of ways around it. seperate out the members with formulas under a different parent and then modify the crossjoin to only pick up the level zero members that are not in that parent or you could put a UDA on formula members and use the exclude command to exclude anything with that UDA

Sorting technique used by oracle for "order by" clause.

when we query above table using order by date, it is returning line 2 prior to line 1. we would like to know why it is returning line 2 first?

Automate start/stop essbase service using Maxl or batch

Hi - how would my batch or Maxl file look like if I wanted to come out with a script to stop and start my essbase service? The reason why i am doing this is because I wanted to stop the essbase service, so that I can archive the essbase.log file.
I am on essbase 7.0, I have read on some postings that stopping and starting the essbase service can potentially corrupt the sec file. If so, then is there any other way of archive the essbase.log file so that it does not grow to megs.

You could use the following maxl
alter system shudown;
it may be useful to stop all the applications first e.g.
alter system unload application all;
or you can use windows command line
net stop essbaseservicename
and to start
net start essbaseservicename
Another method to backup the essbase.log is to make a copy of the log then use maxl to delete the log.
alter system clear logfile;

Update Essbase Cfg setting using MAXL or ESSCMD

Hi All,
I want to change the essbase.cfg settings using MAXL or Esscmd. Is this possible? I could figure out changing Substitution Variables but am looking forward to change settings like CALCCACHE, etc...
If yes, please let me know any insights on the same.

There is no pre defined feature that allows you to do this, but if you want to override the values in .cfg file, depending on what those values are, you can just set them in your calc script, ie: CalcCache, etc. It is best to do this manually anyway, as once you finished, you will need to recycle the Essbase service for them to take effect.
