Sorting? Think twice

Interesting observation about affect of sorting on performance of QueryPage in WS 2.0.
I retrieve Activity objects, associated to given Service Request (by providing an equality query on ServiceRequestId). As it happens, there are no activities.
The call takes a couple of seconds... unless I specify a sorting order, by CreatedDate, - then it takes full 3 minutes to return an empty list!
There are threads on the forum, cheering the ability to specify sort order in queries, but it seems that programmatic sort will be hundreds times faster.
The only situation I would consider to use this usefull feature, is when you really need to get those "top 10" or second page for your screen, etc.
If you are after the fulll list - do not.
(Interesting to imagine what kind of logic is put into WS implementation by Oracle... How did they manage to achieve such difference, for empty record sets?)

I can only imagine how frustrating it is to have your new device broken already. I don't think it's a defect like you seem to imply though. In reality you were lucky that you never broke your 5 when dropping it if you carried it without a case. I was expecting you to say that your 6 bent or something but it  cracking when dropped...that's much more expected than not with the screen being glass. I don't ever get the insurance but I use Otterbox cases. They make the phone seem bigger and add some bulk )although the 6 case isn't as bad as previous ones) but my phones still look like new once I'm ready to retire them.

  • Big problem with iTunes Match and subscription renewal -- think twice before you sign up!!

A little over a year ago I signed up for iTunes Match thinking it would be an excellent way to free up some space on my drive and save me some time by providing access to all of my music on my phone/ other devices. About 100gbs was uploaded without incident. I deleted that music from my drive thinking that iTunes match is like any other cloud based service. In August my subscription came up for renewal. In August I had also switched debit cards. The auto-renew failed. I received notification of such and then went to update my new card information with the account. The card information updated successfully, but when i then went to update my iTunes Match I would receive the error message #5002. So I called customer support. They politely agreed to rectify the situation and that I was not the only customer to face this situation, but said it would require contacting engineering to get a hard fix since in order for an account to renew a subscription they have to purge the library. This is fine because all of your iTunes account purchases are already backed-up. But it is not okay, if you have any other 3rd party music in your library. All of the 3rd party music I had uploaded from old CDs, converted LPs, or purchased through other online vendors would have to be deleted in order to renew my subscription. Engineering replied that there was no work around. This has left me at a weird impasse with customer support with no resolution. The music is just sitting there. I'm gladly willing to pay to renew my subscription, but because of bad engineering, deceptive advertising, and what I'm guessing is a greedy internal policy regarding 3rd party media, I stand to lose the couple thousand bucks just by being a loyal Apple consumer and choosing to use their product over alternatives in the market like Google Play. The morale of the story is this: ITUNES MATCH IS NOT A REAL CLOUD BASED SERVICE EVEN THOUGH IT IS ADVERTISED AS SUCH.  Think twice before you sign up!

Hello Michael, I've been reading many of your splendid replies so perhaps you can help me as I can't seem to find the exact solution to what should be a simple problem. I got a new iPod Touch recently and after spending almost 3 hours on the phone with Apple today we discovered my account was so old it hadn't synched up correctly with Apple's new data requirement so an Apple manager was connected to me and eventually we solved several issues which I won't bother going into here. However, at some point in all this I saw Match show up and music from the iCloud was seemingly downloaded onto my new iPod. I was surprised to see this as I thought I'd done away with Match long ago, but with the new version of iTunes which eliminated over 300 playlists and all of my music from iTunes when it updated to the newest version last week, I suppose anything is possible.
What I want to do now is simply to be able to put my own music back onto my new iPod and ignore everything related to Match hoping it goes away and never returns. So I followed the online instructions to turn off Match, and now iTunes and my iPod say I need to subscribe to iTunes Match...but I still cannot download anything onto my new iPod and the 15,000 plus songs that appeared to be downloaded earlier when on the phone with an Apple manager are also no longer available. BTW, my Match subscription should be paid for, but I can't even figure out how to make sure it never gets updated again as this is nasty business scrubbing all 3rd party music off our own devices. Yuk. But can you help me please? Thus far, this experience with this new iPod Touch and the new iTunes 12.1 is the worst experience I have ever had with Apple and I own many Apple products.

  • Think twice about buying new iPhone 6!

Think twice about purchasing the new iPhone.  It is not a durable phone.  Definitely not as durable as the iPhone 5.  I have had it  a total of 4 days and dropped it once and it completely shattered. That never happened to my 5.  So now to have it fixed I will have to pay another $100. or buy a new on for over $500. I guess Apple and Verizon will make a lot of money on extended warranty plans!!  At least my Apple stock might go up. No one told me that I had to handle this phone like a piece of crystal!  I'm not a teenager that doesn't take care of my possessions.  Very disappointing.  Warning you might want to keep that iPhone 5.
    Bummed customer.

  • ORS parcel carrier? Also, think twice when you wanna send in for repair ! =)

Today, I got an email that my TP is being shipped back by ORS with tracking number. However, I'm trying to look for ORS and have no idea who/where this company is after spending 15mins on google/bing/yahoo . I know of USPS, UPS, DHL, Fedex, OnTrac, etc. .. but shame on me ! Can someone enlighten me ? =p
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)
Updated: got my TP fixed now, but they put in worse battery 5500mAH vs the old one 6300mAh, rotation "sometimes" spins nonstop I gotta use the lock feature. So, to whoever got your TP with minor issues and want to send in for repair.. you should think.. a zillion of times !!!

Hi again.  Some info to pass on to you.  I've called and chatted with the warranty repair people countless times.  Your touchpad is basically in "limbo" from what I've gathered.  Their tracking system is showing it as "shipped", even though it has not.  They will not take initiative to correct their own system so as far as HP is concerned they fufilled thier warranty repair obligation to you.  I've tried speaking with them about this issue but their customer support only seems to want to get people off chat, and off the phone.  I've been trying to resolve this since Friday evening. I've been promised phone calls, emails, shipments etc since then as well but 5 days later nothing has changed.  I'm going to be at them all day until I get info, when I do I'll pass it along to you.

  • N97 Firmware V20 THINK TWICE BEFORE UPDATE

I just upgraded successfully on my N97-3 NAM. After the update my N97 rebooted and it showed Nokia logo and 10 seconds later it came to the startup ringtone (connecting 2 people logo). It was slow but it still managed to the Home screen.
Later, because the phone was lagging a bit I decided to reboot (press the key on top and switch off).
HOWEVER WHEN I TRIED TO TURN IT ON, IT HANG AT THE NOKA LOGO (BLUE NOKIA TEXT) AND NEVER WENT TO THE STARTUP RING TONE (CONNECTING TO HANDS), MAKING MY PHONE TOTALLY UNSUABLE.
I tried to remove the battery and tried again but still no go. Now I need to use my backup phone. There's no way to turn my phone on again.
I'm not sure I'm the only person who gets this. So everyone please think carefully before upgrading your phone.
    Just some heads up.

After that (and restoring my data) the phone was even quicker with nearly 60mb free on the C drive.  I'm kind of glad I had to reset as it was worth it for the extra speed!

What did you use to do your backup?  The first time I ran a backup on my initial N97 (that one went wrong so it got returned) none of my applications got restored despite being told there were put back on.  Did you do the 7370 reset or the 'big one' and did everything restore OK for you?

  • I have the jetpack wifi and someone told me I need to change the name to FBI Surveillance Van so others would think twice before using it how do i do it?

I have the jetpack wifi and someone told me I need to change the name of it to "FBI Surveillance Van so that people would not try to tap onto it. How do I accomplish this?

Changing the SSID is a good idea, but I do not suggest changing it to something so troll enticing as "FBI Surveillance Van".  A SSID like that is only going to draw attention to you and your network and challenge malicious users to target you.  I advise not putting a target on your back and stick to a custom but not well known SSID.
I normally suggest broadcasting an SSID of something a little less confrontational.  Something like combining your favorite color with your favorite sports team.
All jetpacks are a little different but they should all have a way to sign in and complete configuration changes.  If you connect to your Jetpack and look up the IP Address of your Default Gateway you will know the IP of the Jetpack.  Plug in the IP Address of the Jetpack into a web browser and sign in with the admin password.  Review the security options that are available until you find a SSID or broadcast name or network name field.
While you are at it you should also make sure you have a custom WiFi password configured with WPA2 security.  Custom WiFI passwords are going to be much more helpful than a creative SSID at keeping malicious users off your network.  Rule of thumb for WiFi passwords is the longer the better.
A good tool to evaluate your WiFi password is here (shoot for at least a few years):

  • 7.6.3 Firmware Update Woes Today, anyone else? Think twice about it!

Firmware update to 7.6.3 with the Time Capsule today. Normally I don't do these unless I have to but I was tempted in case some additional functionality might be available there or in the new Airport Utility such as being able to view DHCP address for ethernet attached devices.
For three hours, suffered with internet service going on and off. Amber indicator on Airport Utility for Internet on and off. Contacted cable internet carrier, all fine. Contacted Apple, recommended a warm reset via Airport Utility and seemed OK for a while and then behavior continued when pressing on to update the 4 peripheral Airport Expresses which both extend network and deliver Airplay.
Ultimately had to do a factory reset of all of them in sequence, seems OK for now but have lost all DHCP reservations and Port Forwarding which is a pain in the neck.
Unless there's a good reason to update firmware, I would wait.
Interested in the experiences of others. And if anyone knows of a way to simply view the DHCP IP address of wired attached devices I am interested...
    Mitch

Still troubleshooting past midnight but there appears to be a conflict between my peripheral Airport Expresses, two of them are configured as extending network and are connected to ethernet and two are connected to the existing network via WiFi. If I disconnect the two that are connected via WiFi, it works properly.
To factory reset, unplug, press and hold reset button and plug in. Manual says to then press and hold reset for ten seconds after light starts to flash.
I'm also interested in rolling back to 7.6.3 but I wonder if the real problem is the firmware upgrade disturbed the connections of my Expresses to the Time Capsule.

  • Help with cropping & sorting images prior to export for print

I have large project (wedding) within which I've sorted images into several folders (pre-wedding, church, family portraits, etc.) within which there are smart albums based on my ratings. I also have a generic "5 Star" album at the top level which contains the final images that have been adjusted and which the client has been provided with in order to choose from.
I now have a list of print requirements from the client (image name, size, and quantity).
I'm curious to know what the quickest way to sort and tag the images selected for print, particularly in view of there being a number of different size requests for the images which are to be printed.
Also - I'd value opinions (based on experience) on whether I should bother cropping to size for images that are 5x7 and 8x10 (the default ratio is 2x3 at the moment).
The bottom line is that I'm trying to minimise the amount of time I spend on print tagging and cropping prior to export, and post export sorting prior to sending off to the lab.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    To answer your questions:
I am assuming that you want a new version of the crop size especially if you have an image/s that are required in multiple sizes like 8x10 and 5x7 the image would end up in each crop size album so you would have two versions one for each aspect ratio and doing the new version in the context of the album would make in the album pic so that the proper one will be at the top of the stack in each respective album.
Orientation does not matter with the stamp it will work fine - if you have an issue let me know.
with respect to the stamp - the stamp will position the crop relative to the one you lifted - if your lifted crop is in the middle then so will the stamped ones.
As for adjustment of the crop - just click on the crop tool, the click on the browser image and arrow through the images with the crop tool open - you can drag the crop around for each one with a minimum of keystrokes.
Try it and hit me back with issues. I do this all the time and it is about 3000x quicker than my old workflow 5 years ago. For that matter the power of albums, stacks, and stack picks for this kind of thing is fabulous, there are a million ways to use it to speed things up. Bonus is that you are not copying anything so it is virtually free from a resource perspective.
Last but not least I would think twice before using a smart album to do this, youi really do not want the content changing in this type of album, it will not save you any time, I would use static albums in the manner that I suggested.

  • Thinking of joining BT? Read this first...

I'm not great with Forums and as far as complaining in the relevant place, I'm unsure of where to do so.
My problem lies with BT as a company.
I recently signed up for BT entering the contract with an online order.
I have BT Vision, Broadband w/Hub and the Phone Services of course.
I was mislead and miss-sold to upon entering the scheme, being promised x amount of channels on the website within the description of the package (BT Gold On Demand or something to similar description). Later finding that I am effectively paying for a Freeview Digital box with the ability of low quality on demand features.
At no point was I fully made aware that the capabilities of the TV service did not match the likes of Virgin or Sky for the sheer amount of programs received. I was always under the impression that this was just an alternative to Sky, as Virgin would be seen.
For the reason stated I am not satisfied with the service, therefore chose to cancel the services within 7 working days. I then received a rather informal call from one of their representatives, "just letting me know" that this would cost me approx £750 in cancellaions fees. This is appalling. To see a big company try to mislead someone in such a way, and then try to claim the funding for the remainder of the contact which was never fully stabilised is sick.
I am fully within my right to cancel this service, without inducing any fees of any sort. I am fully educated in the Distance Selling Regulations and I know my rights. BT as a company is therefore breaking the law in formally threatening to charge these rates, during my conversations with multiple Front Line Managers who also thought it would be nice to mention their companies corporate solicitors "who are very educated within all the t's and c's" and so on and so forth.
I am currently within my 7th day of service. I am willing to pay for the 7 days, for the first month in fact. I have informed them that I am willing to return all goods, within the original packaging, in full working order. And I will even accept the up front activation charge, for their inconvenience. On a whole I think I am being reasonable. But the Front Line Manager of the Doncaster Call Centre (not to mention any names...) confirmed that he was effectively the dead end of my journey if you will, he agreed to pass me onto the Complaints team who he said will only re-itterate what he had told me for the half hour of my time he took.
I am displeased with the service given. With the way my case has been handled. With the unprofessional manner of every representative I have spoken to this afternoon. With the misrepresentational method used within the layout of the website itself. And more importantly, I am displeased with the manner of which a well known company such as BT chooses to handle its current/possible customer base. After certain legislation was brought forward in 2000 in an attempt to protect customers in the fields of safe and fair selling, it disgusts me that Ofcom and the likes would still oversee such bad practice.
I'm hoping that at the very least, possible customers thinking of joining BT will see this and think twice. I hope that this post will achieve something, with it being on BT's website I'm sure it will cause some fireworks, I just hope this is seen by whome ever may be able to deal with my complaints in an appropriate manner, as opposed to the unprofessional representatives they place on their frontline to deal with their loyal customer base.

I hope potential customers see it too. I don't understand how/why/whether the distance selling act does/doesn't apply - but I'd certainly not want to be in your position.
However if your only gripe is that you don't get as much content as you expected, then I'd encourage other potential customers to check out the BT Vision website which does give a pretty fair representation of what's available On Demand. And there is a lot. For the first 3 - 6 months most people will have no problems finding stuff they want to watch. After that period though it does begin to get a bit patchier. Their library could certainly be bigger.
My main gripe with their content is that they tend to show one series then remove it and add another and you can no longer access the last series - so if you weren't a customer at the time or you simply didn't have time to watch what they had at the time then you're stuffed as you can't record it.
$ky have bagged all of the rights to show stuff first. So don't expect BT Vision's content to be on a par with them on that front. But that's why you're considering BT Vision right? Because it's cheaper.
Also you don't have to stick an ugly satellite dish on your house. And the On Demand doesn't have any ads - which is terrific. I think people that pay to watch TV with ads (especially the quantity on $ky) need to have their heads examined.
The Vision PVR is excellent if getting a bit dated. It doesn't do Freeview HD and it's only got 80 hours worth of storage, which is a bit tight in this day and age particularly as they provide no way of archiving recordings. And they don't do a multi-room solution.
But if you know all that in advance and are happy to accept its limitations then you will get some quality entertainment at a very reasonable price.

  • Sort downloads by file name not type?

Wondering if anyone can help me here. I'm trying to either make a script or automator workflow that will sort my downloads by file name, not file type.
To cut to the point, I'd like say Reno 911, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report to go to a Comedy Central folder, My shows to go to my folder and my wife's to go to hers, just keep the downloads tidy as they come in instead of having to clean the downloads folder manually every day.
There a easy way to do this?

Why not have two separate user accounts - your's and your wife's. Then she can select her own download folder in Safari preferences, and you can select yours. Set up the folder to display in List View and click on the Name column as the sort column (twice for descending order.)

  • Twice as expensive in Australia!!!!!!!!

Right, Photoshop CS5 would cost me $699 if I lived in the US. But as it happens, I live in Australia.
Now, at the moment, 669 dollars in the US is worth about 707.987 dollars in Australia. That's the current rate of exchange, it's what the banks use, it's what companies use, it's what industries use - currency parities are the basis of the world economy.
    So far, so good.
But it seems Adobe operates outside the fiscal constraints that bind the rest of the world. I just went to buy Adobe Photoshop CS5 via the Adobe site, and the price shown on the order page is...... Australian $1168............
Now, I don't know how much the postage would cost on a small carboard box containing a tiny plastic disk, but I'm sure it's not going to be anywhere near $460!!!!
So why the price difference? Why do Australian have to pay $400 more than the US for the same product?
Anybody got any ideas about that?

I logged back in to respond.
I happen to think that regardless of the circumstances that Australians are being punished for being in a more remote part of the world and though some of those things I mention probably do play a part in the strange price difference Australians have proven to good loyal customers I know Adobe and Nikon should be aware of this and perhaps give at least a 15% reduction on the cost of their products. Both companies would benefit a great deal and Aussies deserve a better price. Parody would be even better and the product will sell really well.
I went to Australia in January of this year and the one thing everyone told me if they could get their Model Nikon for a price closer to the US they would not think twice about getting it and if Photoshop was also less expensive they would definitely have it. In both cases they were not pros but would not think twice about getting the top of the line they were mostly interested in the Nikon D3 series, no one mentioned Canon and they all said they would go for the extended version of Photoshop but would probably by the Master Collection just to have it.
To me it is crazy to let this market go to waste and almost everyone I talked to wanted top of the line anything that was at the right price.
I am with you one this Adobe and Nikon should do a study on this ti see what I mean.

  • Sorting internal table

    Hi all,
I have a scenario wherein i have to sort the internal table without using the sort function( i.e sort syntax). Is there any logic.
Can nebody pls help me out.
    Regards
    Jak

    Hai,
To understand bubble sort, think of an air bubble rising in water
To sort N items, N passes are made through the data.
The result of the first pass is that the smallest item is in the last location of the array.
The result of the second pass is that the second smallest item is in the second last location of the array.
    etc.
After N passes, the entire array is sorted.
The operation in each pass is as follows:
First, the values in the first two locations are compared. If necessary the values are exchanged, so that the smaller one is last.
Then, the values in the second and third locations are compared. If necessary the values are exchanged, so that again the smaller one is last.
This process repeats to the end of the array.
In effect, the smaller item bubbles its way towards the top. It keeps on going until either it reaches the top (and the pass ends), or it strikes a smaller item. In that case it stops itself, and gives that smaller item a nudge to start it on its way.
If a complete pass is made without any exchanges being made, the data must already be sorted. This is easily checked. Thus it might be possible to halt the algorithm without going through all N passes.

  • MS Query...cannot write sorted rows error

I have an MS Query report crated and it was working well until i tried to remove a Criteria Filter within the query. I get an error "Cannot Write Sorted Row". If I acknowledge the error, the change to the criteria is not saved and it reverts to
the original setting. I had several columns sorted, of which i deleted the SQL code for sort thinking that may help. I also tried to delete the Criteria Filter via the wizard and directly in SQL but that did not help.
Any suggestions of what may be the issue?

This is a Power Query forum and so it's unlikely you'll find MS Query experts here. That being said, did you try using Power Query for your scenario?
