Soundblaster X-Fi fails to be detected by ALSA

Seemingly there's a 50/50 chance that my X-Fi chipset card fails to be detected by ALSA after bootup, sometimes the card works, sometimes it does not.
It is listed in lspci -v (this is when the card is not working)
06:00.0 Audio device: Creative Labs EMU20k2 [X-Fi Titanium Series] (rev 04)
Subsystem: Creative Labs Device 0043
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10
Memory at f0200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Memory at f0000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2M]
Memory at ec000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64M]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel modules: snd_ctxfi
Any ideas what I can do to troubleshoot or maybe even hotfix this? So far, the only possible solution for this I've got is a cold boot (i.e. turning off the computer, waiting for a bit and then turning it back on; a basic restart usually won't fix this; but a cold boot doesn't have a 100% chance of solving it either) I have never run into a similar problem under Windows, so I doubt it's a hardware issue (maybe between the firmware and the snd_ctxfi driver?).
According to this, it might be a bit more complicated than a regression (i.e. on one version of ubuntu the guy could run his X-Fi card, but not on a newer version, and yet when he downgraded alsa drivers in the newer version or used the older version's kernel, that never fixed his problem, but reinstalling the older version did fix it)
Update:
When the card fails to load, I get this on boot:
maí 08 20:33:10 Cestaria kernel: snd_ctxfi 0000:06:00.0: cannot find the slot for index 0 (range 0-1), error: -16
maí 08 20:33:10 Cestaria kernel: snd_ctxfi: probe of 0000:06:00.0 failed with error -16

Nothing of the sort, here's what I've got (across a blacklists file and an alsa.conf file)
blacklist nouveau
blacklist snd_hda_intel
options snd-ctxfi index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=1
(I'm blacklisting snd_hda_intel because of my intergrated sound card, I set it to index 1  because it is used for my nvidia hdmi sound, then again the blacklist doesn't seem to be working very well; not quite sure if I really need to blacklist nouveau, I do it out of old habit I guess)
Also, as I write this I just had a cold boot which worked to make alsa read my card, so this is the status until I restart my computer next where it's seemingly random whether my x-fi will be found or not:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [XFi ]: SB-XFi - Creative X-Fi
Creative X-Fi 20K2 SB0880
1 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xf4110000 irq 30
2 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xf4080000 irq 17
I can try that id thing if you think it could help. Not sure how worth mentioning it is, but changes with lspci -v from the OP with the card working is that the IRQ is now 18 instead of 10 (somehow I suspect that doesn't matter at all, but I don't know what it is), and it states: kernel driver in use: snd_ctxfi properly now.
So I take it it's not just ALSA, but the card is failing to initialize on boot now despite the device being properly detected by the kernel. Am I correct?

  • Csadmind[1768]: General Error: caldb: Failed in deadlock detect, err=-8

    Hi,
Our Calendar server, 5.1 hotfix 8, is failing to start. Host OS is WinNT 5.0 sp4 (aka Win2000 sp4). This server has been functioning well for over a year. The error message in the admin.log is "csadmind[1768]: General Error: caldb: Failed in deadlock detect, err=-8" that seems relavant as to why the service will not start.
How may this problem be resolved? Searching SunSolve is no help. I'll be logging a case on this.
    Thanks.

    Hi William,
Did you ever get this resolved? I have the same problem, albeit in a Solaris environment.

  • 500 5.4.6 Data command failed: Routing loop detected

I have recently installed OCS 10.1.2 on single box and configured email server. initially i could send email from web client to other domains. Later I made an MX entry in the named server to send and receive emails to the Oracle email server. At that moment also I could send emails to other domains from web client.
I then configured my email on outlook with smtp and pop server pointing to my hosted server. When I send emails to other domain from outlook I received and error "[550] 5.7.1 Rcpt command failed: Mail denied due to site's policy". I searched the forum and found a solution to take care of it. The message id is 1146225, where in I did the following
    Enable Routing Control : active
    allow message relay : true
allow message relay domain : *
    flag process: -l
Recipient Rewriting Rules: $*@your host target smtp,$1@your domain target smtp,
    example:
    $*@mail.sinux.com.pe,$[email protected],
you should change the next value in smtp outbound
rele smtp : ip of your source mail or relay :port smtp
    flag process: -l
After restarting the SMTP inbound and outbound server I didnt get the above error but after few days got a email saying message could not be delivered to other domains (though the message was delivered to my domain) and the errror says "500 5.4.6 Data command failed: Routing loop detected"
    Any ideas to resolve it.
    Warm regards,

  • Watch keep failing heart rate detection

Does anyone has problem with the heart rate monitor?
I have normal skin color (light, no tattoos) and the heart rate monitor can't find my pulse. The last correct one it detected was 24 hours ago. It's been failing for more than 10 times in a row and still can't get my heart rate. I had the watch for 3 days.

    Howdy huynh van du,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Congratulations on your new Apple Watch purchase!
From what I gather, the heart rate sensor isn’t able to measure your heart rate.
The article linked below provides a lot of great information about how the Apple Watch measures your heart rate and it also has troubleshooting tips that’ll resolve most issues related to getting that measurement.

  • Mac wont mount disk images, and fails to auto detect some usb devices.

for some reason, all of a sudden, my mac won't mount disks. even disks I know in the past have worked.
also, it wont auto detect some external devices. especially jump drives and hard drives and audio interfaces. It has to be rebooted with the the devices connected.
I know its not a hardware problem, because everything runs smooth in windows on this computer.
I did some extensive cleaning recently, and installed a lot of new stuff, but i don't know what could be causing this.
any help would be greatly apreciated!

    This USB faq may help.
An SMC reset may help you mount disks.

  • Wireless card suddenly fails to be detected on dv1000 laptop

    Hi there,
My HP dv1000 worked fine with some Atheros wireless card. This morning the operating system( winxp ) suddenly can't detect it. I googled around but there seems to be nothing really helpful to this problem. Did anybody ever come thru this before?
    Thanks.

atheros? you so crazy. anyways for people with this same problem reading this, I just fixed it and ill go into more detail how so you can do it and not go crazy.
The DV1000 uses the intel pro wireless card. When you reinstall windows, all the other drivers are fairly easy to install but the wireless card wont even show up in the hardware profiles and the wireless button wont even light up until you...
Install the "intel chipset installation utility" drivers from the hp site. it's under the subcategory "operating system - enhancements and QFE's
     http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=228&product=435618#N3612
THEN install the "intel proset for intel prowireless drivers" found in the same hp page under "software solutions". Dont confuse this with the wireless drivers themselves, this one says PROSET the other one doesn't and the other one is in the other category for "driver - network". Install the proset.
THEN go to the "driver network" subcategory and download the very first one, intel prowireless drivers and install it.
Realize that itll install, flash up a black DOS screen and dissappear. its supposed to that doesnt mean its broke hah. RESTART and you should be golden, make sure you push the wirless button if its ot already on.
If this doesnt work, then either you didnt follow my steps with attention to detail, or you have to install the broadcom driver last instead of the intel prowireless.
I just did this after a year of windows being reinstalled and the wireless not working. This. Works. Forget all the other threads that dont go into enough detail.

  • Sound card not being detected by alsa

I compiled a kernel using the /usr/src method as per the wiki page. However, I've been having some problems with ALSA. I compiled in ALSA and support for my card (I think I did at least) as modules. alsaconf finds my card fine, but alsamixer dies with this message:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
I tried using strace on it:
    open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/usr/lib/libncursesw.so.5", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/usr/lib/libasound.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libm.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libdl.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libpthread.so.0", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/lib/libc.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf", O_RDONLY) = 3
    open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
    open("/dev/aloadC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
    Process 28188 detached
However, /dev/snd/controlC0 exists, even though the output of the above would lead me to believe differently.
What else is weird is, mplayer and xmms can play sounds just fine, but Firefox and aplay cannot.
More information about my setup is available from the output of an ALSA info script, here: http://pastebin.ca/591136 and http://pastebin.ca/590970
Any idea what's going on? This is very strange. Thanks.

  • Soundblaster 24, no so

I have a Dell Dimension 3000, soundblaster 24, Windows XP. I'd downloaded some anime and watched it, no problem... downloaded some more, tried to watch it, and I had no sound. No speaker sound, no system sounds, even headphones plugged in the front didn't work. I ran Creative Diagnostic and, sure enough, it failed the hardware detection. So, I'm really at a loss... any help?

One thing you may want to check, Click on Start>Control Panel> Administrati've Tools>Services and scroll down to Windows Audio and see if it is Started and set to Automatic. If not enable it.

  • MBPro won't detect external display on DVI

    Hi Folks,
I have a strange problem that gives me quite some headache:
Is use a MacBook Pro 3,1 2.2 Ghz, 4GB RAM, 128MB NVidia something together with a Samsung SyncMaster 215TW.
For the past year I was using my external screen without any trouble, connecting it via DVI to the mac. Every night I turn down the lid putting the notebook in sleep mode and switch off the monitor. Exactly as I did yesterday. But this morning however the external display didn't wake up as usual it did just nothing - was not even detected via the detect display function. And this is still the case right now.
So when I plug (or unplug) the DVI to the external something is still going on. I get the blue screen (don't get that wrong that used to appear just before it would expand the desktop to the external screen, but then it switches back as if there would be nothing connected.
No relevant entries in any logfile. System Profiler shows "Status: No display connected". The display itself says some no connection message if unplugged and - get this - falls to sleep mode right after I plugin the dvi connector to the mac.
    I tried all this:
-reboot (with display connected & without display connected and all other imaginable combinations) - no positive result
-the display via DVI-VGA adapter works (but the image is not as nice unfortunately)
    -reset PRAM (boot with optioncommand+PR)
-reset the entire thing (no power, no battery and hold the powerkey for 10 secs.) nothing
-connect some other external display to the mac via DVI - works perfectly
-connect the display via DVI to an other macbook pro computer - works perfectly too
-hard reset the display via the (red) support menu - no result
-an other DVI cable - no result
-booted from the leopard install cd - same thing
-booted from an other harddisk with 10.4.10 (removing the internal disk)- same strange behaviour with the old system
-booted ubuntu linux 8.04 - even here the same problem X doesn't recognize the external display if it is attached to the DVI port also no entries to the logs here.
-SwitchResX and tried to reset the display setting from there (vendor id 4c2d & product id 213 & 214) but still no success.
    - called the apple support and my distributer of trust - no ideas but could be a hardware fault (mmh ok... but why do all other display I tried work perfectly with that beast of macbook pro but not any SyncMaster 215TW?!? that worked great for the whole last year)
I guess the macbook had a very bad dream that very last night about mac eating foo-bars that crawl through DVI cables from any 215TW display.
As for now I have a date with the local apple service partner -- in three weeks (it's holiday time in g.o. germany). Don't know what to tell him: Probably I'll need to go there with the screen to show them the entire scenario. Hopefully they (still) think it's a problem with faulty apple hardware (or system software) and replace the logic board.
But I'm still in hope! Is there anybody out there having an idea with what I could try next to bring back the love between my macbook and the lovely 215TW display?
    greetings,
    brutus banane

I have recently bough a new Macbook Pro 15.4", it worked first time with a Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM but after a few days the 'detect display' utility ceased to connect, then a short while after on start up I was getting a blank screen with a flashing folder with '?' on it, preventing me from booting up successfully.
I tried the reset p-ram, didn't work then I tried an archive install of OSX and that ironed out all the creases - for a day, there has been no flashing folders on start up but the Samsung has failed to be detected and this morning wouldn't work no matter how many restarts or cable disconnecting attempts.
So I called Apple helpline, told the guy what had happened, he mentioned to try the install discs again with the display connected to see of the MBP sent a signal to it, after choosing the language in the OSX installer, the display was once again recognized! I didn't have to proceed any further with the install discs so quit, reset and ejected the install discs and all seems well again.
    For how long i wonder?
I have no idea of this will work for anyone else but it works for me at the moment.
Interested to see when and how this finally gets solved!

  • Macbook no longer detects Airport Express Network

I've been using my macbook to connect to my Airport express base station for my home wireless daily for like a year now. Today however, my macbook refuses to connect to the network. After a few scans it detects the network, then when I try to connect it brings up the "this network requires a WEP password" which I put in, and then the connection times out on every attempt.
I tried using the Airport Utility which fails to even detect the base station.
Yes I've restarted my MB, yes I've restarted the express/modem. Thing is, I'm connected to the same network right now on my iPhone which doesn't seem to have any problem.

Update: my macbook can connect to the wireless network at my university, but still not the airport express network.

  • ALSA is not detecting my M-Audio Delta 1010 sound card (x86-64)

So, what might be causing the probe error -5?
I really need to get this card working! :S
I have Arch up to date!
    Hardware specs:
    CPU: AMD FX6100
Board: Gigabyte (can't recall the model) with NVidia chipset
    Thank you,

I have an m-audio delta 1010lt as well, it's a great card but it sits in my closet now because I "upgraded" to a motherboard that doesn't have legacy PCI slots. However, I'm pretty sure I remember the card working for me and being "plug and play" under arch with kernel 3.3 or newer. So some things I would consider:
Try checking IRQs, make sure nothing is overlapping.
Try using the LTS kernel, to see if it is kernel related, since ice1712 module should ship with almost any kernel => 2.6.26.
How many watts is the power supply? Sometimes insufficient wattage can result in drivers failing to load.
What other sound cards do you have installed? Have you tried blacklisting all of the other cards in your system using alsa-base.conf? This is a bit extreme, but might be a useful troubleshooting measure, as some people have had issues in the past with alsa indexing mutiple cards to the same slot number

  • Windows 7 fail to restore from hp dvds when almost finished.

I have a windows 7 computer that was compromised by virus then viruses, then the viruses removed themselves.
As such, the compouter was considered compromised including any recover partitions.
    So,,,
    backup data
I order recover cds from HP, paying money for them.
I turn on computer , press F9  choose to boot from dvd drive .
Follow instructions to erase computer, and reinstall OS.
    put in all 3 discs.
It formats hdd, copys files to drive, reboots a number of times during process  like it is susposed to
Then it says install failed withthe following details
NOTE- The WIFI on the computer was turned off prior to the reinstall., I saw some mentions of this being a problem with hp for some reason.. But the wifi light is on after install progresses a little..
I looked at the following log file and the main stuff I saw failing was extra  - usless applications
When it fail, no options to access windows, just retry. That is pretty usless since retrying the same thing usually gives the same result.
The system also PASSED all the hp system tests  - memory, hdd....
It appears to be poorly designed HP restore disc.
for it to actually be failing because a drive ir not active then the os is installing???  Or one of the bloat ware programs did not install?????
Right now the computer is a paper weight.
The virus was better than the hprestore dvd.
I will be contacting Costco ( place of purchase) on this in a few days. Maybe they have some pull with HP

Your problem is not the same one I have.
there three discs in the restore process, and to be clear so you do not misunderstand
when the restore process finishes with EACH and every discs, it EJECTS it IMMEDIATELY.
And since this is a laptop computer, the drives can only be physically closed.
On an different note for anyone else  for someone with experiance with my problem,
during the restore process the only real option is to skip the supplemental disc. _______Same result.
I changed the computer date to 2012 ._____ same result
Just before it reboots the final time, after it installs the system drivers, you can see there is a windows desktop screen including an icon for the sample/test drive Office 2010
After it fails, I run a program to look at the partitions of the 750gb drive,
these some small ones ( one or two 5 gig or less)
A 70gb partition that looks like normal windows partition.
and 670 gb FREE unallacated as a partition.
So either the software automatically deleated the real windows partition when a "failed install" is detected
Or the HP factory created restore discs are improperly coded
The invoice did state "hp Costco restore" discs.
Which leads me to understand there is something different about Costco restore discs. That would increase the changes of a alternate variation with less persons buying the restore discs could  actually be  nonfunctional and not noticed .

  • Acrobat XI pro upgrade fails during installation.

Upgrade from Acrobat XI to XI pro fails.  "Setup detects that you already have a more functional product".  What gives and how to recover?  Windows 8.1.  I have a folder on my desk top with Acrobat XI setup.exe file.

  • [SOLVED] mpd: Failed to stat /var/lib/mpd/music: Permission denied

I've set up mpd according to the wiki.
    /etc/mpd.conf:
    music_directory "/var/lib/mpd/music"
    playlist_directory "/var/lib/mpd/playlists"
    db_file "/var/lib/mpd/mpd.db"
    log_file "/var/log/mpd/mpd.log"
    pid_file "/run/mpd/mpd.pid
    state_file "/var/lib/mpd/mpdstate"
    user "mpd"
    audio_output {
    type "pulse"
    name "My Pulse Output"
    # server "remote_server" # optional
    # sink "remote_server_sink" # optional
/var/lib/mpd/music is a symlink to /home/dennis/Musik/mpd/. I've given the mpd user recursive ownership to both /var/lib/mpd/ and /home/dennis/Musik/mpd/.
When I try to update the database (I've tried both mpc and Sonata), the log says
Failed to stat /var/lib/mpd/music: Permission denied
    What permission am I missing?
    SOLUTION:
I used the script config instead and it worked flawlessly.
