Soundfonts in Logic

Hi!
I'm having some troubles using soundfonts in Logic Pro 7.2.
I've tried to setup a Quicktime Synth, it works if you use the Default Synthesizer.
But when I change the soundfont it still uses the sounds of the Default Synthesizer.
What is wrong?
And: Is there another way to use soundfonts?
tnx

Don't use the Quicktime Synth. Use the EXS24. It will load and convert SoundFonts.

  • Soundfont samples and folder locations

I've noticed that when importing Soundfont folders, Logic creates the necessary EXS files in HD/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments -- which is where the source SF2 files are kept.
However, it also creates a separate 'Soundfont Samples' folder with the original .wav files extracted, but puts it in a different directory -
    User/Application Support/Logic/Soundfont Samples
Anyone know why it does this? Why doesn't it put this folder together in the 'main' directory on the HD with everything else (ie - in one place), and instead places this folder in my user account directory? Is there a setting someplace to change this?
    Thanks!

ha! they still have a couple of my own FLAs in that zip file

  • Adding a Soundfont to my Logic Studio instruments folder.

    Hello,
I've just tried to add a purchased Soundfont instrument (Celtic Winds Tin Whistle) to Logic Studio.  Instructions indicate that i need to add it to the sampler instruments folder (done) and then  "chose the Soundfont2 file in the EXS24 mk11 Sampler Instruments pop-up menu.  The EXS24 automatically converts the chosen file into an EXS sampler instrument."
Where do I find this EXS24 pop-up menu?  I can't find in any of the documentation how you bring this sampler up to get at the pop-up menu.  Or is there another way I should be doing this?
And-Does the Soundfont instrument I purchased work in Logic or must it be Soundfont2?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

You should copy the file here:
    /Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments
    Then open exs24 and click on the instruments popup menu (green text on black surface, between "unison" and "edit|options" buttons);
    If you had it already open choose "refresh menu" from the aforementioned popup menu;
Now you should see the font and be able to select it. when you select it EXS24 will create a folder within that menu with all the patches contained inside the soundfont. They'll be already converted and selectable in the right format.
Not sure about soundfont 1 or 2. I think i always found version2 around.
Remember also you have a builtin plugin to manage with soundfonts called DSLMusicDevice.
You can pick it in the instruments popup menu under "Au Instruments" > "Apple".
In order for this plugin to see soundfonts you need to place them in /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks folder.
It's very basic but sometimes does a better job with some loops not usually well done.
    regards.

  • Can Logic Pro work with soundfont (sf2) files?

Just curious. I have Garageband and the DLS Music Player has no way to change banks or presets for downloaded sf2 files except by sending a "program change" event from a midi controller. Can logic pro do that? I.e., if I load an sf2 file, can it use different banks and presets within that sf2 file, or is it limited to only the very first of each like Garageband?

Oh, I see, you don't have Logic yet - well, what I meant was that, once you've got your sf2 files into the EXS, just have a track for each different sound (open up an EXS24 on each track). If you need to use a lot of tracks, you can use Logic's 'Bounce in Place' feature, which instantly creates an audio file for you from the software instrument region you've created for any particular sound, so you don't need to think about banks of presets or program changes etc..
Logic comes with a vast array of software instruments and presets for them, along with a huge number of loops, if that's your thing - you may well find that good quality sounds that you want are already there and you won't need to use soundfont files anyway. If you've been using Garageband and want to take your work further, Logic is probably the next, well, logical step.

  • SoundFont sf2 files and Logic Pro 7

Does anyone know if Logic Pro 7 can access and use SoundFont sf2 files? If so, how can they be accessed? Is it as simple as assigning these files via an instrument file track?

According to users on the Logic forum here, Logic Pro 7.2 and above (the Universal Binary release of Logic) works very well on Intel Mac. Anything below 7.2 is PowerPC only, and will work very poorly on an Intel Mac, if it works at all.

Have you tried importing them into the EXS 24 ? Assuming the process is the same if you're on Logic X, its just a matter of putting the soundfont files into the ~/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments folder and the EXS converts them when you try to load them - its explained properly in the Software Instruments manual (EXS24 section), but its very quick and  easy. It might provide a decent alternative.

  • Soundfont Newbie Issues

So I am reasonably new to soundfonts, but I find that the vast majority of sf2 soundfonts I download don't work. Some do, which makes me think that the others are just busted, they are freebies after all, but it is literally like 4 to 1, non-working to working. Most do not show up in the EXS-24 menu at all, but a few do and just produce no sound. Is this about par for the course or am I doing something wrong?
Also, I have a lot of files in other formats floating around my soundfont folder in wav and .bk format. Is there a thread on how to get these to work in Logic.
    Cheers!

  • Logic sampler, i need to put my e mu e4xt ultra samples into my logic pro

i have my e mu 4xt ultra samples on my desk top. they show up as .e4b
i need to convert them to .exs so they will line up in my logic sampler.
    how can i do this?
    aaron

I believe you are mistaken, I'm afraid. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Logic EXS24 doesn't read EMU format samples - just AKAI and .gig files (and soundfonts).
But there are a couple commercial programs out there that can convert EMU disks. The one I use is called 'Translator' by Chicken Systems. Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of the product which has always been extremely buggy.
Nevertheless, it did do the EMU translations for me. I also noticed a recent announcement from them about a new program. May be worth a look.
There's another translator program out there, but I don't remember the name. Do a search on KVR... There are more options on the PC if you have (or can borrow) one.
    cheers.

  • Importing Soundfont 2 files

How do I import soundfont 2 files into the EXS24? I thought you just put them in the sampler instruments folder and hey presto. I've tried this but to no avail. I get an insufficient priviledges error appear.Even when I try to open the files independantly to Logic it says it can't open them as they are either corrupt or in an unknown format but I know they're legit SF2 files.
    What am I doing wrong???

Dont know if it will help you, but try to use "get info" : Apple and the letter "i" on the soundfont main folder, and then se on de far down in this window on "Details" if you got read AND write acsess. if You havent, that could be youre problem.. Mark all posebilities as read and write, then hit " Apply to enclosed contents".
Hope this helps for you as it solved my problem once.
i olso have problem with getting halion/a´kai-files (.fxp) into exs24. Any tips?

  • DLSMusicDevice not playing some soundfonts!

    Hi all,
I have logic studio 8 and I have recently bought some soundfonts for it. So I downloaded them, put the file into the Library/audio/sounds/banks, however, when I go onto Logic, open the DLSMusicDevice, and find the instruments, It only show's a few, and olny plays a few!
    Can smeone please help!
    Thanks

I am also having the same problem but with videos that I've purchased via Itunes (on my new touch nonetheless, not via my computer) all music I've ever purchased that is not a plus track (DRM Protected) and about 90% of my apps. The videos give a pop up message stating "Cannot play selected video" and the apps act similar to the music tracks where they load for about half a second and then go back to home screen. Anything that either is not DRM protected or that I got somewhere other than Itunes works fine. Also it should be noted that I did not register my iPod until a day after I first set it up due to my internet connection not working on Christmas day and I was unable to connect to the itunes store when I first synced my ipod. Everything worked fine until I registered it. This is my second Touch as I upgraded for christmas from a Gen 1 to a Gen 3. Everything still works on the Gen 1 fine.

  • Okay, does Logic have a sampler or is it not standard for AIFF files (or wa

I have searched high and low loading every instrument in Logic and what I am trying to do is, load a AIFF OR WAV file and then tweak, mangle it.
Does Logic come with a sampler or are they all players in that you have to use a proprietary format?
If it does, can someone let me know how?
    Thank you.

Yes. EXS 24 is the sampler instrument.
I loads AIFF, WAV, SD2, Soundfont and other trypes of files.
RTFM. Theres a whole manual just on the Logic plugins. Crack it open to the EXS24 chapter.
    Cheers
    Say what?
I have to open a book? LOL! I don't think I've done that in quite a while, even when I was working on Gigastudio for the Mac (which I have a working copy of, to bad Tascam took so long, suppose that's why they stopped development)...
LOL, anyway, I will but can't someone tell me how to load a aiff, wav or am I missing out as I do want to not only load but manipulate. Is it a good sampler in that like Sculpture, or say N.I. sampler that I can mangle the sample to make it sound very different?
    Thanks
I can, for 250 an hour.
Or, you can RTFM. That is what the manual is there for.
Not only will you learn (to read) you might learn how to do something by yourself. Amazing. You'll be the toast of your community, I'll bet you even get laid... ok, maybe not that... ok ok you'll be able to get out of your parent's house. yes, that is more realistic for you.

  • Logic 8 handling of loops

Does anyone know, have they changed the way to cut, paste, etc loops?
    I hope so.
I hope it is closer to Live or even Acid's way of handling loops in an arrangement.
    Thanks.

Hi Madison, I'll try to answer to your questions...
    1. If you already use GB, in LE you'll find the same Apple loops concept.
The Apple Loop Utility lets you convert a normal audio file into an Apple loop and use it in LE.
Rex format (.rcy, rx, rx2) is recognized too.
    2. Acid no, others yes.
    3. You'll need an audio interface adequate to your needs; i.e. if you have to record 4 mics then you'll need 4 mic inputs). To record few tracks the internal HD is ok otherwise, for a heavier job, you'll need an external FW HD (7200RPM).
    4. there are some complaints about MIDI/Audio sync; I've never experimented this kind of bugs. So the answer is yes. About transferring something between two platforms I should know more about your older system.
    5. Yes, you can hook anything you want and play through Logic and AU plugins. You can only be limited by latency (and therefore CPU) but apart that you're ok.
    6. Yes, you can import Akai libraries (and soundfont too) into EXSP24.
    cheers

  • Creating waves from Soundfont with WaveStu

I'm trying to create some sound effects using SoundFont. How do I record and save them in wav format? I tried recording with WaveStudio, but it doesn't record anything I play in SoundFont. Seems like this should be a simple, straightforward task, but I'm not getting it. The instructions don't cover this. For that matter, how to I record any wave data from my pc using WaveStudio besides music?

You can draw by hand whatever impulses responses you want in the digital domain. As to whether they will faithfully replicate any of the "famous" reverb trails that some libraries go to great lengths to capture is doubtful I think, though it would be interesting to do listening tests to compare them. But given the sensitivity of the ear in the analog domain, the complex nature of impulse responses that are well cpatured from complex acoustic environments, and what you can draw with your hand - I would bet that no IR vendor is losing any money to someone trying to replicate the impulse response of the Vienna Philharmonic's hall with the pencil tool in Logic.

  • Can logic pro read sound fonts?

I am currently trying to use Garageband and have reached a couple of cripling limitations.
    1) the orchestra instruments I need are not supported (oboe d'amore and baritone oboe)
    2) there are free sound fonts available which contain good samples of these instruments but Garageband can only read the FIRST instrument from a sound font?  Which basically (in my opinion) means it cannot read a sound font.
Can Logic Pro read soundfonts correctly?  Can I use all the instruments from a sound font using Logic Pro?

    jimka_2001 wrote:
When you say "can convert sound fonts"  do you mean just the first instrument in the sound font, or all of the instruments in a single sound font?
All of the instruments get converted into single patches located inside a folder. Only one set of samples from the soundfont exist, but each patch from the soundfont is available as a single entity. In other words, you don't select the soundfont and have individual patches available within the SF, each patch is loaded as a separate instrument.
Which makes me think... are you sure that Garageband isn't doing this?

  • Static during playback with soundfonts

I'm trying to bring a MIDI file into GarageBand and play it back using various soundfonts. However, when I choose "DLS Music Device" as my tone generator and assign a soundfont, I hear a loud hissing and crackling sound during playback. I only hear this when I'm using a soundfont, not with any of GarageBand's internal sounds.
I've tried several soundfonts, most of which I've used successfully in other applications, but none of them will play consistently in GarageBand without the hissing.
    Any ideas?

It happens even in a brand new project. I have an empty project apart from 1 track with the mic as an input. No plug ins or anything on it. I've tried the same switching the mic for a guitar with no problem. The guitar sounds perfect while playing and in playback but with the mic I can't hear anything when recording and the volume on the fader is very low so I have to normalise the track to hear the vocals are a good level. I've always done this with no issues but now it seems to be bringing out all these horrible noises. I should add that the vocals themselves are perfectly fine with no distorting, only this strange static sound during gaps in speech. Not sure if that narrows it down at all?
Ok the fact that the volume is very low is something to correct first, because that's not right. That mic requires either Phantom power or two AA batteries to function, do you have that provided?   The Mic input gain on the Line-6 Pod is where you raise the recording level.
It might also help if you posted a screen shot of logic's Audio preferences.
