SPA232D PSTN driving me crazy in the UK

Hi,
I don't want links to stuff you've found on Google, because I've probably found those docs already.  I've seen/tried this one (
http://www.aoakley.com/articles/2008-01-08.php) ... this one (http://wiki.aa.org.uk/VoIP_Phones_-_Cisco_SPA) .... this one (
http://www.provu.co.uk/pdf/sipura/sipura_uk_regional_settings.pdf) .... and numerous others.
I want to hear from real people who've had experience with the miserable task of trying to setup Cisco SPA kit in the UK with PSTN !    I spent hours on Google yesterday.... so I doubt you'll be able to answer the question just by Googling on my behalf.
Here's how far I've got .....
Outbound calls:  I dial on a Cisco DECT handset, press the green call button .... hear the dialtone on the PSTN... but the SPA never dials.
Inbound calls:  The Cisco DECT handset rings, I pick up.... all I hear is ringing.... the SPA never picks up.
I'll post the config shortly.

1) You must be in "full screen" mode. "F" on the keyboard cycles through the different view modes and in one of them the Minimize button is visible.
Other than that. You can put the icon for Desktop" in your taskbar and have it available all the time.
2) You have to do 2 things:
a) In Edit > Preferences uncheck "Show Import Dialog when a card is detected".
b) Open "My Computer" and right-click the card-reader that shows as a drive.Click on "Properties" and select the "Autoplay" tab. Click on the Radio-button "Select an Action to Perform", Select "Pictures" and select "Take No Action". Click OK and OK.
