Spaces Keyboard Shortcuts

Hi all,
Is there a shortcut to quickly move the front most/active window to a different space? e.g something like CTRLSHIFT(number of space or use an arrow key to move around the available spaces). Something like this would be very useful, especially for situations like when you open the find dialog in XCode which then zips you around to a different space when you when you have multiple projects open.
Stephen

I know what you mean about the zipping around. I don't think there is a keyboard shortcut to move a (front) window to a particular space. That could be handy. At the moment all you can do, I think, is to either hit F8 and drag the window, or grab the window and slide it all the way to an edge of your screen to get to the adjacent space (and hold it there to keep on sliding).
charlie
WAIT!! Experimentation shows you can grab a window and, while "holding" it with your mouse, hit ctrl-1,2,... in which case you move to the requested space and the window comes with you! Cool.
I guess that's what Joseph meant. Duh.

  • Spaces Keyboard Shortcut

    Hi all,
This past week I upgraded to 10.5.2 and started playing with Spaces. I set up the Command+Arrows to switch between the different Spaces I created, but then I realized that this was also the keyboard shortcut to move the cursor to the end of a line of text in a word processor or Mail or whatever.
I got back into the preferences and changed the keyboard back to Control + Arrow to switch between Spaces, thinking that I'd get my keyboard "go to the end of the line" shortcut back, but that didn't happen. So now I have no keyboard shortcut to quickly navigate to the end of a line of text.
Is there anyone out there that knows how to get me back to square-one on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

I tried replicating what you did, changing the Spaces to Command+Arrow, moving around Spaces a few times using the new key combination, and then changing back to Control+Arrow. But I couldn’t replicate what is happening to you - my Command+Arrow went back to moving me to the end of the line or beginning of the line in MS Word and Mail.
A couple of things you might try. Go into Spaces and uncheck Enable Spaces. See if your Command+Arrow works properly. If not, try going back into Spaces, re-enable Spaces and remove all your applications from their Spaces and again disabling Spaces. Then see if your Command+Arrow to move to the end returns.

  • Spaces keyboard shortcuts won't work

i just got my new MBP, and i have noticed a little problem.
all of the F1-F12 keys were all given default functionality (i.e. F3 is Expose, F4 is Dashboard...).
well, when trying to set up the shortcuts for Spaces navigation, I have noticed that, no matter what F key I press, the default functionality is getting called and not the Spaces navigation.
I have even tried this with the command/control additions to the F keys, and have had no luck. i thought i read that this was a known issue with the most recent version of OS X.
has anyone else noticed this problem, and does anyone know of a solution?
    thanks you.

apparently, i was looking in the wrong place. this was addressed in the os x forum.
using the command-arrow keys to switch between desktops will work fine with me, although i would like full functionality.
sorry for the repost. if anyone does know the real solution, please don't hesitate to let me know. it seems as though, while some people can get it to work, os x eventually forgets the keyboard shortcuts.
    hope it gets fixed.

  • Spaces keyboard shortcut no longer works

I restarted my computer because expose/dashboard stopped working. After the restart, they were fine, but there was a new problem. The shortcut to view all spaces (F8 on my computer) will not work no matter what key I assign it to...though it works if I assign it to a mouse click. Switching using ^Arrow or ^# still works normally.
    Any clues?

I have the same problem. At first Spaces would not remember the mouse shortcut, now it's Expose which does not remember on of its mouse shortcuts. I tried changing the mouse but the same problem occurred.

  • Spaces keyboard shortcut not working as expected

    Hello,
I enabled the Control-# shortcut to switch directly to a space but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. The only space I can switch directly to is 1. If I press Control-2, 3, or 4, it will not switch. The only alternative is to press Control-1 and then 2,3, or 4 to switch spaces. I tried using the Option and Command keys as the shortcut key, but they both behave the same way. Does anyone know what the issue here is? Thanks for your help!
    Davy

I'm a bit confused. My expectation was that if I pressed Control-4, Space 4 would pop up. On the same note, if I pressed Control-right arrow, I would move to whatever space was to the right of the current viewed space. Am I mistaken?
Interestingly, Control-arrow doesn't work either until I hit Control-1 to bring up the Spaces overlay.
    Thanks!

  • Keyboard shortcut for Spaces?

I'm pretty new to mac, and loves space on my macbook. But I've run into a problem...when I'm out and about I use spaces all the time, but when I get home I have external monitor that I use as a secondary display. I normally disable spaces when I get home, because I don't want create spaces like I was without a second monitor. Currently I'm going into spaces and just disabling it, but is there a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to disable spaces without having to go into system preferences?
    Thanks in advance.

there is no built in tool for this. but if you REALLY want to do this you can make a service that toggles spaces on/off using automator and applescript. you can then assign a keyboard shortcut to run ot. or you can make two separate services one for turning spaces on and another to turn them off and make separate shortcuts to them. I can supply the details but do you actually want to go through all that? I would recommend using spaces at home too. I find them quite convenient with two monitors as well as with one.

  • Keyboard becomes unresponsive after using keyboard shortcut for Spaces?

Hi, I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.2 and have the most annoying bug! I always use spaces, and sometimes after using the keyboard shortcut to a space, my keyboard becomes completely unresponsive and I have to log out and log back in again!! Any known fixes? It's happening on my Macbook and Mac Mini!
    Thanks

Check this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2161076&start=0&tstart=0) for the exact issue. Seems widespread.

  • Add a keyboard shortcut for spaces

I would like to add a keyboard shortcut that enables me to switch my current active window to adjacent spaces (right, down, etc). Is there any way to do this?

Im sorry, I must have poorly phrased my question. I would like to switch my current active window (ie the browser that I am typing from currently) from space one (my current space) to space 2 (to the right) using only keyboard shortcuts.
I know that I can click on the top of this window and use the shortcuts that you have provided to move it. However, I would like to move the window with only the keyboard.

  • How do I prevent fullscreen to create its own space or how do I create a keyboard shortcut to such a fullscreen space

    Hello,
In Mountain Lion, I could select from the dock icon the Options -> Assign To -> This Desktop to link back a fullscreen app to one desktop which allowed me to have a direct shortcut to my fullscreen app, e.g. ⌘3. In Mavericks this does not work and I cannot find how to disable the new space for fullscreen app nor how to create a keyboard shortcut for switch directly to that app once it's in fullscreen.
Any help would be much appreciated, I would hate to have to downgrade back to Mountain Lion.
    Cheers,
    kybus

The most typical solution for enterprise sites is to store their users credentials in an LDAP store such as Oracle Internet Directory (OID) or MS Active Directory. LDAP is an industry standard for extremely fast directory services over IP network infrastructure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Directory_Access_Protocol).
In turn some sites store their user credentials in databases tables. Of course databases can be configured for fast lookups too, but it is a database centric solution where LDAP is designed to work across networks and is ideal for servers as a result which live and breath on the network.
In case of Java EE applications and especially those written in ADF, the use of these services isn't written into the application, but rather the application delegates this responsibility of configuring and providing these services back to the Java EE server. So for example Edwin's post is about configuring a WLS "security provider" to lookup user's info from the database, and here is another blog I wrote for MS Active Directory a while back (http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.com.au/2008/12/configuring-wls-with-ms-active.html). The main advantage here is you don't have every application baking its own solution, rather WLS provides a standard well tested way to configure the security lookups.
In terms of writing (i.e. creating users) to the security store over reading from it, indeed you need to build your own code. Ramandeep Singh Nanda has a nice post on doing this with OID through Oracle's OPSS: http://ramannanda.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/opss-adf-security-utility.html
Finally what sites like Amazon and Facebook do aren't necessarily good examples to follow as they're application's requirements are typically far in excess of a typical enterprise site, and in turn have often written bespoke solutions to deal with their scalability and distribution requirements. I dare say LDAP is a good choice for 99% of enterprises.

  • Keyboard Shortcuts to switch spaces changing.

I have configured my keyboard shortcuts to use custom shortcuts for switching spaces (I have 7 spaces).  I use command + 1 to switch to space 1, command + 2 to switch to space 2, etc.  However, for some time now, when I log out, lock the screen, or anything other than a total shut down or restart, my shortcuts stop working.  By that, I mean that hitting command + 2 will take me to space 3 instead of 2.  This wouldn't be that big of a deal except my workflow has certain apps set to certain spaces and being thrust to the wrong one (and which wrong one changes again when I log out, lock screen, etc).  When I check my shortcuts in preferences, they all still show as being correct.  This has happened across multiple macs (2 MBP Retinas and a brand new iMac) on different (non-transferred) users all with Mountain Lion.  Please help!

I know this is an old post, but in case someone else has this problem:
Try going to System Preferences -> Mission Control and uncheck the box for "Automatically rearrange spaces based on most recent use".

  • Spaces doesn't recognize keyboard shortcuts!!

    hey everyone.
I had my spaces setup to use F11 keyboard shortcut and dashboard is F12.
then yesterday.. spaces just stoped working.. dashboard still works. i have
disabled and enabled spaces again.. switched to F12.. still nothing. has anyone
had a similar problem that got figured out? dashboard works with F11 so it's
not a dead key.. I'm going to restart now..
    rob

I have a similar problem on my PPC G5 only, my MBP (intel) works fine.
None of my F8 - F12 keys work, spaces is enabled, all keyboard shortcuts are assigned. I was on the phone to apple for a while working with a slightly confused (the reason may become apparent) tech who eventually solved my problem by resetting the PRAM, although, this only worked for about 2 hours.
The only thing we found was that in my preferences for keyboard shortcuts for expose, dashboard and spaces i have two options that i can set. One is for example F8, the other I can select any mouse button from Secondary through to Button 34. Which he didn't have on his computer. He could only select the F8 option...
Although i have discovered that the mouse options come from having a logitech wireless mouse (either MX revolution to the PPC or the Nano to my MBP..although the MBP keyboard short cuts still work).
So in summary, my keyboard shortcuts don't work on ONLY my PPC..rather annoying.

  • Keyboard shortcut to open a cells pop-up menu and select from list of options.

I guessed Option-Return would be the shortcut from this, as it typically lets you edit a cells contents, but no. Read the keyboard Shortcuts list in Numbers>Help but didn't see anything.

    Hi ts,
Thanks for drawing my attention to this! Let's add some missing detail…
While "you just press spacebar" to open the pop-up menu, that won't select a menu item.
After you've opened the menu, 'you could press the first letter' of an entry, ( 'like every other pop-up list on Earth,') or you could press the down arrow to step down the list (and the up arrow to step up, if you went beyond the item you wanted to choose).
And you can change your mind; the menu will stay open until you confirm your choice (by pressing the space bar again, OR by pressing return OR by pressing enter).
Note that pressing the first letter will select the 'smallest' item name beginning with that letter. To move to another item name starting with that letter, you'll need to use the up or down arrow key (or the mouse).
Thanks again for posting. With luck, WideEyedPupil will still be monitoring this discussion, and will see these posts.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Keyboard shortcuts are not showing, but still exist!?

I've tried to look for this issue, but I can't seem to find anyone else experiencing this... it's a strange one. Here is the situation:
First, I'm speaking of iOS 5.0.1, and the keyboard shortcuts located under General->Keyboard->Shortcuts.
Upon upgrading to iOS 5, I was pretty stoked about this massive time-saver that was previously only possible through (already forgot the $5 app's name!) and was further restricted in the fact that the only apps it could be used in were those specifically coded to use its API. Anyway, thankful it's now native!
Was... thankful. When they were all showing up in the listing as they are supposed to. Something happened... maybe the upgrade from 5.0->5.0.1, I can't pinpoint a specific time when they all decided to turn to ghosts! Every last one of them, looks like they were erased... the list is totally bare. That's misleading, though, because the shortcuts that I had created still work fine! They just fail to show up in the list. Odd... There have been a couple of rare occassions that I cannot find a way to reproduce where I could just put something in the Search box, (any letter, or a space) and they would all show up again as if they never left!
Until you try and start editing or messing with any of them... any edits will crash the Settings app upon hitting Save. Additionally, you obviously cannot add a shortcut term that already exists then save it "overwriting" an old one as a trick... it just says it already exists and you can't use that shortcut term.
I did take some screenshots of when I got it to actually show up (and still have no idea what I did to cause them to briefly appear as search results -- I can try the same thing now and I get no results found. Anyone have any idea what in the world could be going on, or how I can fix this? It's a real pain, considering any new ones I add also disappear... so many of them that I created months ago, I can't recall what the exact shorthand was, and I'm out of
My only thought for a hopefully "sure fix" would be to do a RESET on keyboard settings. I'd like to avoid it if at all possible, as that's going to erase not only the mass of shortcuts that already exist, but will also reset my custom words/anything it has "learned" from my input.
As far as troubleshooting to see if anything made a difference-- I have added extra keyboards, removed all keyboards, changed the default keyboard to another language, you name it as far as adding or subtracting (or even changing software/hardware keyboard layouts out) -- all to no avail.
Here are the few screenshots I was able to get during the "fluke" time that I "sort of" got them to reappear:
    Did a search on "s"--
I believe this was a freshly added one? Or it alone, showed up:
This one I simply searched on a single (space):
At no other point have I been able to recreate this temporary resurrection since then, but as proof that they still are in effect:
I'd really like to go in and change some of them, for instance, I defined "nm" as "not much" and instead, I find myself using that regularly as shorthand for nevermind (which I originally defined as n/m or nvm)... but any action on them... editing, deleting, etc... results in the Settings crash, as mentioned, immediately upon hitting Save... *boop* gone.
Do any of you brilliant minds have any suggestions to try that don't involve resetting the keyboard settings (wiping it out and redoing the OS is not an option for something that is really mostly an annoyance and inconvenience. Too much time, effort and trouble for me to have to do that, unfortunately... Has anyone seen or heard of this happening to anyone else? In closing, I can't tie the disappearance to any specific event, other than "possibly the 5.0.1 upgrade" (and that's just a guess).
What's not a guess was that my iPhone 4 was running super fast and battery worked great at 5.0! Was very happy! 5.0.1 destroyed this thing. It's now slow, constantly crashing, and my batttery (which unlike 4S owners) was working great... now I am having to charge it 3-4 times per day! That's not even with heavy usage! That's another story and has its own (very long and irate) thread. My thought: should've just stayed with 5.0; what possessed me to apply a patch for an issue that I wasn't even experiencing!
Oh, one last probably important bit of info -- firmware is clean, it's not JB or anything. Upgrade to 5.0 went smooth as can be, and I was very pleased with 5.0 -- now I'm considering downgrading back to 5.0 (thankfully saved my SHSH's) though I don't know the implications of what FURTHER havoc that could cause, so I'm patiently waiting for 5.1 to not fix everyone's issues! I never said I was an optimist, but I do consider myself a realist! *nods*
Crap. After posting this, I was able to find these other few users experiencing the same thing. Didn't mean to dupe post but at least here's the cross reference which I'll post there too:

I lost all my keyboard shortcuts on my iPhone 5s after upgrading to iOS 8. They still showed up on my iPad Air (iOS 8) and iMac (10.9.5). There were, however, massive sync problems, sometimes they would only flow from one device to all the others, sometimes from one device to only one of the other two, sometimes not at all.
I deleted all my shortcuts and started from scratch, deleting “~/Library/Application Support/Ubiquity”, ~/Library/Dictionaries” and “~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~TextInput” from the iMac and KeyboardDomain from my iOS devices.
    Rebooted everything a dozen times.
Toggled Documents & Data Sync off and on a dozen times too in all kinds of combination with rebooting and deleting the aforementioned files.
Everything always starts working and syncing fine for a very short while, but sooner or later one of my devices stops receiving new shortcuts as I re-add them.
I reboot that device and it catches up. I enter new shortcuts, and that device doesn’t get any new shortcuts. This time, a reboot doesn’t fix anything.
After using my devices for a while, I notice shortcuts are entirely gone from both the iPhone and iPad, but not from the iMac.
I even upgraded my iPhone 5s to a 6, and right off the bat it had issues with keyboard shortcut sync. I also setup my iPad as new, and same thing: right off the bat, sync issues with keyboard shortcuts.

  • Creating a new keyboard shortcut

    Hi there,
Can anyone tell me how to create a keyboard shortcut for a function that is not on the shortcut list in CS5? I want to make a keyboard shortcut for adjusting the 'space after' a paragraph.
    Thanks very much,

    It's a little non-trivial.
First you have to write a script that implements that function. Then you can assign a shortcut in Keyboard Shortcuts by finding your script in the Scripts area.
The good news is that changing the space after for a paragraph is a pretty trivial script.
    For instance, this script:
    app.selection[0].paragraphs.everyItem().spaceAfter=0.5
sets the Space After of every paragraph of the first selected item to 0.5 in the current vertical units. It's a bit more complicated if you want it to work on every selected item (e.g. you select two independent textframes), but it works fine if you highlight multiple paragraphs in a single frame. It also doesn't do any error checking, so you'll get errors if you run it with, say, a rectangle selected, because rectangles don't usually have a paragraphs.
You could fix these limitations, but it's probably not worth the bother?
What do you do with the script? Save it as spaceAfter.jsx (or whatever) in your favorite text editor and follow the directions at How to Install InDesign Scripts to put it where InDesign can see it.
