  • How do I stop all of the Safari spam pop-ups?

Since I downloaded OS Yosemite, my Safari is constantly getting pop-up tabs with spam.  It is very bad and Apple was not supposed to be susceptible to such virus issues.  Someone please advise if you have the same happening and how to stop it.  Can you re-download a new fresh version of Safari to stop it?

They can’t stop you from installing Adware. After following Ralph’s advice, have a read here: How to install adware

  • Using OSX 10.6.8, recently been having popups, think it's adware/malware from MediaDownloader, one of the first pop ups to occur.  The second pop up to occur was Trojanalert.  Never had a virus on this computer.  Please help remove.

I'm currently using OSX 10.6.8, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Memory.  I am not able to upgrade the operating system, and the computer still has 67 GB of memory on the harddrive.  I don't use it for anything very intense, mostly internet browsing.  I was at a hotel over the weekend and connected to their free wifi.  Once back home, two days later, I started receiving pop ups in Chrome.  The first was MediaDownloader, so I assume that is the culprit.  The second pop up to occur was Trojanalert.  I looked through some online community forums and was pointed towards downloading and running AdwareMedic.  My operating system does not support this program.  Next I read up on how to examine libraries and extensions to find the issue.  I'm not well versed in this, but I followed the directions and did not find any malicious looking extensions or items in the libraries.  Before looking for the "thing" to remove, I backed up my computer as recommended.
I have never, to my knowledge, had a virus on this computer.  I have never experienced pop ups, and I very rarely download any program, especially not software included with other programs.
Could someone recommend a virus/adware/malware utility that will find and remove this issue or provide me with a detailed set of instructions on how to find the issue and then correct it?  Are there free online scans or removal tools that are trusted and could help?  Also, if I should be posting this somewhere else, please let me know.  I have not used this community tool much at all.  Thank you in advance for any assistance.

First, thanks for the quick response.  This is the website that I looked at and was trying to follow.  There are no extensions listed in my Safari, and the only two in Chrome are: Google Docs and Java for Browsing.  In Firefox the only extension is Garmin Communicator 4.1.0.
To the best of my novice ability I followed the directions to look at the libraries and have not found malicious things there either.  As I cannot upgrade to 10.7, is there anything else I'm missing?  Again, I've tried my best to locate the cause, but I'm new to looking at files and paths.  Nothing jumps out as abnormal or as something listed on thesafemac.com/arg .

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • I was doing some stuff with torrents and now pop ups are everywhere. I deleted everything I downloaded that had to deal with them but the pop ups are still occurring. Does anyone know what to do? I do have AppleCare and was wondering if they could help.

I was downloading some stuff off of piratebay and I downloaded utorrent. I went back on my MacBook Pro later and found a bunch of pop ups on safari and a completely different safari format. I reset safari cleared everything deleted the stuff I downloaded and they are still occurring. I was wondering if it is an easy fix and /or AppleCare might be able to help me. Do I have a virus?

I would agree with kevin_, it sounds like you have downloaded some adware.
Torrents and piracy sites are extremely dangerous, and you should stop downloading from such places immediately! They have become very common sources for adware and malware on the Mac... really, the only common source, to be honest. You practically can't swing a stick in such places without hitting something malicious.
Stop downloading stolen content, provided by untrustworthy criminals, or you'll have this problem repeat itself. Next time it might be worse than simple adware.

  • Pop Ups still happening after security settings set - HELP!!!

We have a Mac OS-X 10.7.5. I am having pop ups EVERY time I log into Safari even after I've checked "block pop ups" in security in Safari. I've installed Adguard, and now, I will click on a site i want to go to and adguard blocks it, but never opens the page because the malware sites like "mackeeper" are jumping in before the real site is opened. This is getting crazy. And a pornographic pop up happened and I have kids. Thank God it was me on here when it popped up. Something somehow has gotten into this computer. So. My question I guess is, can I uninstall Safari and install Firefox or something else and have this not happen anymore? Or uninstall Safari and re-install?? Thanks so much for any help. This is really awful.

First, you do not need to download unknown software to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.

  • How do you permanently (as long as possible) delete maleware pop ups on your safari-- that i know will eventually spread and attack my various computer files?? HELP HELP HELP! i haven't found a good enough solution!!

-1 Delete MALEWARE SOFTWARE through a safe apple or apple advertised rescue program
    - 2 MONITOR/REJECT POP UPS on safari/google chrome
    - 3 Have CONTROL OVER ADVERTISING YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE- through using filter systems in a new anti pop up software too?
    - 4 DOES A PROGRAM EXIST THAT DOES ANTI POP UP ADVERTISING AND MALEWARE FIGHTING??
    - 5 I ABSOLUTELY HATE OF THIS HACKING! RUINS MY BELIEF IN APPLE, SAFARI AND INTERNET SAFTEY!! HELP!

The old rule of thumb was to keep 10-12 GB free. Any lower than that and you will start to have trouble. I was very close to that for a long time and never had any complaints. Now, Lion "encourages" 20% free space (on my newer 250 GB drive) so I try to keep it with more than 50 GB free.
Do you still have the original memory in that machine too? The metal plate you have to remove in the battery compartment also provides access to the RAM. Your machine will take 2 GB of RAM, possibly 3. You definitely want to max that out too.
Regardless, you definitely need a new hard drive. When Apple switched to PC components, they had to take a quality hit. These 2.5" notebook hard drives are not very reliable. I'm surprised your hard drive hasn't died by now. I usually get a new hard drive with every major OS upgrade. A $ 50 investment every couple of years is no big deal.
Unfortunately, you (and I) suffer from being an early adopter in 2006. Those 32-bit machines only accept 2 GB RAM (maybe 3) and are only 32-bit so they can't be upgraded to Lion. Because of this limitation, you won't see as dramatic an improvement as you would with a 2007 machine. If you run more than a couple of applications, your hard drive is always going to have to be doing some VM work. My 2006 machine has even lost its bluetooth. I gave it to my brother. My very similar 2007 Macbook is still running great.
So, you must get a new hard drive because your old one is likely on death's door. If you don't have at least 2 GB - get it. If you can't afford a new machine, you might want to consider an SSD. That might help mitigate your RAM limitations. You can spend from $ 100 to $ 350 and get a dramatic speed improvement.

I have already disabled it in the system preferences, I have installed ClamXAV to run through my laptop(no results of any "infection"), but it just, DOESNT WORK. I didn't have this issue before, and its really annoying the shi* out of me. pop ups keep appearing no matter which website i go, or where i click. (alibaba, mac keeper, videos...) URGH.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!

Click here and follow the instructions, or if desired, download and run Adware Medic. The second link is a direct download; if you're unable to download it, see this page.
ClamXav didn't detect anything because adware and viruses are different types of malware.

  • Help with Pop ups?

    Hi,
I am creating an online course that requires pop ups. I have seen how to create pop ups with the behaviours panel, but:
How do you make the cursor change when it rolls over the word and how do you centre the pop up so it appears in the middle of the screen?

    Do you mean like tooltips?
If so, then this may help:
