Deprecation of net-tools

So net-tools has been deprecated in favor of NetworkManager  and Netcfg, but netcfg depends on net-tools. Is Netcfg replacing the Net-tools functionality with something else?

The ML has the on-going discussion on this. Short answer, yes, eventually (patches welcome).

  • [Solved] Upgrade fails because of net-tools

    It was almost a week since I last did a "pacman -Syu" on my system. Before that, I had read about depreciation of net-tools and have already modified my rc.conf to use the newer simple network setup. Everything was working fine. Even upgradation of the system (pacman -Syu) also worked fine last week.
    I was out of town for a few days. So, when I came back on Sunday, I tried updating the system. Pacman found updates and downloaded them. But it failed when actually upgrading the packages. It gives the following error:

    As you can see it complains about /bin/hostname file existing in the filesystem and that causing problem for net-tools package. I'm not sure how or why this happened. The /bin/hostname is supposed to be available on the filesystem, right?
    Since net-tools was depreciated in favour of netcfg, I tried removing net-tools. When I try that, it offers to remove netcfg package as well!

    What I did was to upgrade each package manually (excluding net-tools package). But this is cumbersome and tedious. I did a search on the forum and on internet and did not find other people with the same problem. So, is something wrong/corrupt on my arch installation?
    If so, how do I fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Vinay V

    Thanks for the reply. I should have searched for a generic "exists in filesystem" rather than net-tools error specific "/bin/hostname exists in filesystem". I thought this was because of the recent move to netcfg from net-tools. Maybe I'm mistaken.
    Anyway, thanks for pointing out that stikie to me. Let me try the suggestions in that post

  • Net-tools rc.conf new style

    Hello.
    Is there any way to use net-tools and old style rc.conf (it was like a BSD rc.conf - very useful).
    It is uncomfortably to configure network like this:
    # interface=eth0
    # address=192.168.0.2
    # netmask=255.255.255.0
    # broadcast=192.168.0.255
    # gateway=192.168.0.1
    Why developers decided this way better than old style?
    netcfg is a good way, but I saw enough of comments where users don't like this.
    I wanna old style back ))))

    wait... I upgrade my system a day ago, but it supports an "old style" of configuring way. There is no "old style" examples in rc.conf anymore , but it working . How can it be? Developers make a compatibility?

  • No 'Ifconfig'

    I sat at an existing Arch Linux workstation today and tried to check the I.P. however the 'ifconfig' command returned:
    -bash: ifconfig: command not found
    I don't know if Arch Linux changed the way it does things or if this machine is missing a package. I do know it has an I.P. address and can get out to the Internet. This machine has no G.U.I. however. Can anyone tell me what I could be missing and or how to resolve this?

  • What is the Arch equivalent to netstat?

    I want to use the netstat command like this 'netstat -an | grep LISTEN' to find out what processes are listening to incoming connections.  But there is no netstat on my system.  Is there a way to install it or is the proper way to use a different command?

    Some apps were deleted for these reasons:
    http://www.archlinux.org/news/dropping- … s-support/
    http://www.archlinux.org/news/deprecation-of-net-tools/
    As you were told, you can install net-tools to get netstat back. Also, you can use the program that comes by default through the package iproute2; ss.

  • [SOLVED] How to use command NETSTAT in archlinux?

    Hi, everyone. Can you please tell me how to enable this NETSTAT command? I can't find this with pacman. In yaourt I found netstat-nat but I am not sure they are the same thing.
    After I yaourted this netstat-nat I still can't use it because netfilter is not enabled in my kernel yet.

    Thanks a lot for your quick answer. It did helped. I pacmaned net-tools and I can use "netstat" now. Cheers!
    net-tools are deprecated and you should be using iproute2 instead: http://www.archlinux.org/news/deprecation-of-net-tools/

    Whoops.
    Apologies for the bad advice. I must have missed that net-tools was deprecated.
    Sadly I have to keep it installed as it is still a dependency of wicd as far as I know.
    EDIT: Decided to get my act together and remove as many deprecated packages as I can. Now using netcfg. I'll have to pay more attention to the news.

  • Rc.conf update with interface alias

    hello,
    I'm using interface aliases on eth0 to host different virtual hosts with SSL cetificates
    my rc.conf config was like that :
    eth0="eth0 IP1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast IP1"
    eth0_0="eth0:0 IP2 netmask 255.255.255.255 broadcast IP2"
    INTERFACES=(eth0 eth0_0)
    gateway="default gw IP1_GATEWAY"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    but since the deprecation of net-tools and the new syntax for rc.conf I'm not sure how the aliases should be defined.
    I read this page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rc.conf but I'm not sure if I have to use Netcfg now or if I can use the Single interface way and if so what would be the syntax?
    thanks for your help

    Very constructive.

    Read the ip manual and add the relevant commands to your /etc/rc.local.
    The syntax should be something like the following (I haven't tested it):
    ip address add dev eth0 local IP1/255.255.255.0 broadcast IP1
    ip address add dev eth0 local IP2/255.255.255.255 broadcast IP2

    Just installed archlinux-2011.06.10-netinstall-i686.iso on Asus Eee PC 901 - SUCCESS!
    On Archiso boot I saw this:
    :: Starting Syslog-NG [DONE]
    Warning: This functionality is deprecated
    Please refer to /etc/rc.conf on how to define a single wired
    connection, or use a utility such as netcfg.
    :: Starting Network [DONE]
    On installed system this warning also appears, but with an error:
    :: Starting Network [DONE]
    /etc/rc.d/network: line 68: /sbin/ifconfig: No such file or directory
    I have wired eth0 with DHCP. I fixed both warning and error by defining "a single wired connection" as described in rc.conf and removing old network setup directives. Looks like installation script doesn't read news about Deprecation of net-tools: ifconfig is a part of net-tools which was deprecated and not installed by default. Do I need report bug?

  • New rc.conf networking and nic bonding

    I understand that net-tools is deprecated (actually a good idea),
    but i have the feeling that someone forget to think about bonds.
    Netcfg should support it (optionally), but i am not able to get it working (lack of documentation).
    It is possible to make the new method working:
    in rc.conf:
    interface=bond0
    address=
    then in rc.local
    echo +eth0 > /sys/class/net/bond0/bonding/slaves
    echo +eth1 > /sys/class/net/bond0/bonding/slaves
    ip link set dev bond0 up
    but i don't think that is *the* way to go
    is there a better way  to do it ?
    maybe a feature request ?

    geometric wrote:I think that optimal decision would be both ways of configuring network.
    Why developers wouldn't do that? the old way is more flexible anyway

  • My understanding of net.SOAP and net.HTTP

    Hi,
    I've spent the evening Googling around for information on how to access a web server from within a PDF file via JavaScript.  I'd like to summarize my understanding and see if I've got it right.  Here are my take-aways:
    1. The SOAP methods and properties have been deprecated and net.SOAP
         should be used in new designs.
    2. Relative to the net.HTTP request method, the API page indicates:
             "Note: This method can only be made outside the context of a document
               (for example, in a folder level JavaScript)."
         I've never dealt with a "folder level JavaScript".  I believe this is a JavaScript that
         is outside of the PDF file and that can be invoked by the PDF file.  If I want to
         deliver a single PDF file (not a PDF file and a separate JavaScript), then I
         presume I should avoid net.HTTP, and use only net.SOAP.
    3.  I can develop and test JavaScripts that use net.SOAP in Acrobat -- true?
          However, to have the resultant PDF file work in Reader, I would need to go
          down the path of LiveCycle Reader Extensions, paying Adobe a fee that
          is a function of how many customers are expected to read the PDF file.
    4. It *appears* that, when a customer opens a Reader Extensions-enabled PDF file,
         they are allowed to only open, modify & save it once. They would be prevented from
         opening/modifying/saving it a second time -- true?  Well, I bet they can open it,
         perhaps even modify it, but they probably can't save it again.  If the customer wanted
         to open/modify/save it a second time, they would need to get a new copy from the
         provider (me) -- true?  If so, this seems very cumbersome.
    5. I believe that net.SOAP is conveyed by HTTP protocol -- true?  I also believe that
         net.SOAP functionality can be used with HTTPS.
    6. Final observation -- it looks like Adobe has changed their JavaScript SDK from PDF
        format to web page format for Acrobat 9.0.  I looked everywhere for the "standard"
        PDF JavaScript API Reference supported by Acrobat 8.0 and before, but never found it.
        Seems like a step backwards, since I can no longer easily print the entire API reference.
    Thanks for your help in letting me know if/if not my understandings are correct. Thanks also for your help in answering my questions interspersed above.
    Dave

    Sorry for the formatting above.  I interspersed lines between the questions, but they seem to have mostly disappeared.

  • Deprecated features in Dreamweaver

    Why is Adobe abandoning ASP.NET?
    If you are going to do this, then allow PHP programmers to
    use SQL Server databases in Dreamweaver. You are limiting our
    ability and it sucks!

    This is the same reason why Adobe abandoned Flash. Some
    people might remember, before the merger Adobe tried to go after
    Macromedia with GoLive. This was an alternative to Flash based off
    of AfterEffects I believe. While it was a decent Flash application
    and completely geared towards designers, it couldn't pull the hard
    core Flash developers away from Macromedia. The reason they
    couldn't do this was because Macromedia controlled the ActionScript
    code and could ship new versions of ActionScript with their product
    and Adobe's product would be at minimum 1 version of Actionscript
    behind Macromedia because they could develop it without having to
    share the code with Adobe. Thus Adobe ended up buying Macromedia to
    get this end to their graphics design.
    In the MS case though I don't see Adobe buying out Microsoft
    and thus they are in the same predicament. Do you develop behind
    the standard or do you drop the ASP.NET standard from your
    products. Obviously they chose the latter as they have time and
    time again. This is smart business, and it gives MS the upper hand.
    In the same respect MS is at fault because they leave Mac
    developers in the dark because the ASP.NET tools are only available
    on the Windows OS (virtualization aside of course). So Microsoft
    can be the same way.

    There is a great tool from Prognosis - Integrated Research. They have an assessment product and they have a monitoring product for ongoing management.

    Hello cmoura88,
    Measurement Studio is a tool to be used with .net. Follow the product overview of Measurement Studio:
    "NI Measurement Studio is the only suite of .NET tools designed for building professional engineering applications in Microsoft Visual Studio to acquire, analyze, and display measurement data. To help programmers deliver an end-to-end engineering system, Measurement Studio provides libraries for hardware communication and signal acquisition, data processing and storage, and user interface design and data visualization.
    Measurement Studio customizable Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Forms, and ASP.NET UI components, as well as its signal analysis functions, are uniquely optimized for test, measurement, and automation applications.
    This suite offers extensive example code, templates, and code-generating assistants integrated directly into Visual Studio. Visual C# and Visual Basic .NET developers can reduce the cost and development time required to build professional engineering applications by reusing Measurement Studio classes and controls."

    I would like to add another option.  If you discover that the balance sheet flag should remain active, you can change the business area and cost center fields from time-dependent to time-independent.  This will allow you to change the business area and cost center fields using Tcode AS02.
    Make this change in Customization: Financial Accounting > Asset Accounting > Master Data > Specify Time-Independent Management of Organiz. Units
    SAP recommends that you should only change this standard setting when ALL of the following apply:
    You do not need a history of the time-dependent assignments of an asset to a business area or cost center.
    You create business area or profit center balance sheets.
    You expect to make frequent changes to the assignments to business areas or cost centers.
