Special characters function stuck

Hello:
I've been a Mac person for just over a year and have just experienced the first "crash" of a Mac program. I was writing an email and needed the Euro symbol, but after I clicked on Special Characters in the Edit menu, the box wouldn't open -- the circle in the middle was doing it's spinning thing (not the rainbow circle) and then would disappear. I have a 19" flat panel monitor active and open next to my MacBook, and if I click on that screen the Special Characters box appears with the disc in the middle, but it's frozen. I finished the email anyway, then tried again unsuccessfully to get the Special Characters open. I closed everything down and let the computer rest a few minutes, then rebooted, but still nothing. Should I simply reinstall Leopard, or is there another solution?
Thanks,
Medren

To make a Euro, try typing Option/alt + shift + 2. € (for a US keyboard layout).
Try trashing the .plist in Home/Library/Preferences that has charpaletteserver in its name.

  • Need help in using replace function with special characters

    I have a column in a table where the data can contain ascii code for special characters such as an apostrophe.
    The data looks like this:
    CREEK'S LANE
    ie for a street named CREEK'S LANE.
    I want to replace the ascii representation with the apostrophe and have the returned data show up as: CREEK's LANE
    When I try the query below I get prompted for substitution variable value.
    I don't seem to be able to find the right syntax to make this query work.
    SELECT REPLACE (street_name, ''', '''')
    FROM
    streets WHERE street_id = 1
    Does anybody know how to do this?
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    GeorgeHa! The codes you specified rendered in the HTML, but showed properly when I listed your original posting above. I didn't understand what you meant initially because the 5-character string represenation got rendered as the quote that you said you weren't able to get - a display problem.
    You're getting prompted for the substituon variable because of the ampersand; you appear to be doing this in SQL*PLUS. The first thing I would try is to SET DEFINE OFF when using the ampersands to see if that works. If That doesn't work check the docs to delmit the ampersand (I think its a backslash before it but can't remember offhand). Another, harder option might be to use the TRANSLATE function replacing the literal character instead of using REPLACE (though replacing a quote will be a little tricky). If you're on 10g also consider using the advanced quoting
    Good luck!

  • How to use Special Characters in CONCAT function or another form with Xquer

    Hello everyone
    I'm using PS3 OEPE within message flow (proxy)and I'm using Xquery.
    I'm using the CONCAT function, but this does not allow me to concatenate special characters not allowed, for example:
    I want to concatenate these strings:
    String1 = “<get-person><id-person&;gt;”
    String2 = “123”
    String3 = “</id-person&;gt; </get-person>”
    I want to represent characters regex. It means no XML characters
    Someone knows some way, any function that allows me to concatenate in OSB these values with Xquery?
    Edited by: chromosoma on Sep 5, 2012 5:59 PM

    Hi,
    It seems to me you're doing things in the most complicated way possible...
    Firstly, you should use codepoints-to-string not the reverse... Secondly, the function work with decimals, not hexa
    http://www.xqueryfunctions.com/xq/fn_codepoints-to-string.html
    http://www.xqueryfunctions.com/xq/fn_string-to-codepoints.html
    This works...
    concat(codepoints-to-string(38),'lt',codepoints-to-string(59),'get-person')But this also works... Note that I've inserted a space between the & and the lt so the forum formatting can show it...
    let
    $String1 := "& lt;get-person& gt;& lt;id-person& gt;",
    $String2 := "123",
    $String3 := "& lt;/id-person& gt;& lt;/get-person& gt;"
    return
         concat($String1,$String2,$String3)And, finally this also works... So what's the reason for escaping < and > with &lt and > and why codepoints?
    let
    $String1 := "<get-person><id-person>",
    $String2 := "123",
    $String3 := "</id-person></get-person>"
    return
         concat($String1,$String2,$String3)Cheers,

  • Function to insert special characters

    I want procedure or function which can insert set of huge values say1000.. with special characters existing in spreasheet to a table.
    for example:
    L&T Infotech
    Ana's parlour
    Procter & Gamble
    ETSA Transmission Corporation T/As Electranet SA

    And the problem is where?
    You don't know how to work with spreadsheets (assuming excel) or Oracle?
    OK here is an example
    Table is as follows:
    SQL> create table mytable (col1 varchar2(100), col2 varchar2(100));
    Table created.Excel cell contains following value
    Latvia's men & women
    You need it to insert in the table
    The formula for insert creation is (one example of thousands of course ;)
    =CONCATENATE("INSERT INTO mytable (col1, col2) values ('";SUBSTITUTE(C16;"'";"''");"', 'aaa');")As a result you need in sqlplus do following
    SET SCAN OFF
    and then just call script with your calculated excel column values and for particular above mentioned column and table it would be:
    SQL> set scan off
    SQL> INSERT INTO mytable (col1, col2) values ('Latvia''s men & women', 'aaa');

  • How special characters can be used in xml element TAG.

    Hi,
    In my project data is fetched from the database and stored in the xml file. Data contains European characters as well. When I tried with UTF-8 it was giving error but when I changed the encoding to ISO-8859-1, XML generated.
    Well now I am stuck with a problem and as I dont know much about XML, I am trying to get some knowledge from you.
    I have xml tag like: <Name&>Rohit</Name><employee#>78023</employee>.
    I am getting the error message top level element must be defined. This is because special characters are in TAG. But it doesnt give error if I use special characters/European char in value( like Rohit*).
    I dont know much about CDATA. Any help from your end will be greatly appreciated.Can this problem resolved if i use java function outformat.CDataElements(String[]) and pass the elements name.
    Thanks!!
    Regards,
    Rohit Dutt

    Client: I want this element name.
    You: The XML recommendation doesn't allow you to have that element name. If you make documents with that element name then no XML software will be able to read them. It just isn't going to work. Insisting on that would just be stupid and pointless. (Okay, you don't say that last sentence that way to your client but that's how it is. Explain it more nicely than that.)

  • Special characters as keys - Unicode BW system

    Hello together,
    we want to change our SAP BW System 3.5 to Unicode and afterwards we plan the upgrade to BI 7.0.
    We found the OSS note which tells that characteristic keys (e.g. material number, customer number, brand key, country key) must be designed as 7-bit-US-ASCII characters (common characters), but we did not found any note about what happens if we don’t convert these characters into 7-bit-US-ASCII and we’ve got some Infoobjects with special characters.
    Do we really have to convert theses characters? What happens if we don’t change these?
    We used as well the customizing option ALL_CAPITAL. What does ALL_Capital mean at the Unicode-compliant BW system. Does it have the same function as before?
    Thanks and regards,

    It's a difficult matter that's made extremely easy with Unicode. But you're not there yet so you are stuck with code pages and these can get very messy.
    I dealt with this with Asian languages but it was a long time ago. I do remember there was a white paper from SAP that explained all the possible scenarios and possible solutions. For downloads to Excel etc. you will have to convert to a windows code page or Unicode in your program.
    [This SAP Help page|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/9c/70023cfa699508e10000000a11402f/frameset.htm] might contain the mentioned document, I was unable to open it...

  • Bpel parsing issue with special characters...

    Hi All,
    We are integrating Oracle Sales Order information with OTM as Order Releases.
    For this we are sending the Sales Order in the form of clob from the procedure to the Bpel process.
    1. A PL/SQL procedure would send the Sales order XML as a CLOB.
    2.In the BPEL process , we are performing ora:parseXML() function on the clob obtained.
    3.A patch was installed on the BPEL SOA server:
    10.1.3.3.1 MLR#8, Patch#6906880 which was supposed to handle all the parsing activities at run time.
    4. But when ever any special character viz..; #,UNIT¿S etc the BPEL process is failing with a fault string due to Parsing error.
    5. Could you please provide us a workaround for solving this issue ASAP with all the special characters.

  • Replace special characters in FDF

    Hello,
    I have searched everywhere and cannot find the answer to this simple problem.  I can manipulate javascript in an HTML environment by using free scripts, but it's not so easy in a PDF form.  I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and I have a form that when filled out and submitted, generates and emails an FDF file.  I am using a server-side script called FormGenie to do this, and the script hates parentheses and some other special characters, they break the FDF file.  All I want to do is set up a document level Javascript that will check for and replace all instances of these special characters with something allowed like a hyphen- or just a space.
    I have tried:
    function clearText() {
         document.formname.fieldname.value=filterNum(document.formname.fieldname.value)
         function filterNum(str) {
              re = /\$|#|~|\%|\*|\^|\(|\)|\+|\=|\[|\]|\[|\}|\{|\;|\"|\<|\>|\?|\||\\|\!|\$/g;
              // remove special characters like "$" and "," etc...
              return str.replace(re, "-");
    and
    function clearText2(str) {
    stringName = stringName.replace(/\$|#|~|\%|\*|\^|\(|\)|\+|\=|\[|\]|\[|\}|\{|\;|\"|\<|\>|\?|\||\\|\!|\$ /g,'-');
    I know these aren't right, but I have to be at least barking up the right tree.
    Can someone help?
    Thank you

    OK, here is my first stab at putting together this  script from searching the API reference.
    To loop  through the text fields and get their values, I have:
    for  ( var i = 0; i < this.numFields; i++) {
    var fname = this.getNthFieldName(i);
    if ( fname.type = "text" ) f.value;   [Not sure if "f.value" is correct or legal here]
    If this is even getting close, where I get stuck  is how to get the original script to take those values and replace any unwanted characters found.
    if (!event.willCommit) {
        event.change = event.change.replace(/[\$\#\~\%\*\^\(\)\+\=\[\]\{\}\;\"\<\>\?\|\\\!]/g, "-");
    I just need to put this together correctly and I don't know how.
    I have the form submission part down, that was already done, I just need to add the custom "Run a javascript" item above it so that is executed first.
    Need a little guidance,
    Thanks

  • Special characters into datagrid through the use of buttons

    Hi!
    I have a datagrid for word input, I'm trying to create a "special characters" panel, kind of like google's new "virtual keyboard" thing on google.com, so that the user can enter data into the datagrid cells using characters that aren't on their keyboards.
    I manage to do this just fine, using the solution below. I know this is probably not the best/most effective way to do this, so any suggestions for making the code better will be appreciated. I only started using Flex a month ago.
    grid.addEventListener(DataGridEvent.ITEM_EDIT_BEGIN, selectColumn)
    function selectColumn(event:DataGridEvent):void
    var selectedColumn:DataGridColumn = grid.columns[event.columnIndex];
    selCol = selectedColumn.dataField;
    //The function for adding a special character to the selected datagrid column by clicking a button:
    //(inputWordArray is the dataprovider for the grid called "grid" )
    protected function clickSomeButton(event:MouseEvent):void
    var colIndex:int = new int;
    if (selCol == "from"){
    inputWordArray[grid.selectedIndex].from = inputWordArray[grid.selectedIndex].from + "æ";
    colIndex = 0;
    else if (selCol == "to"){
    colIndex = 1;
    inputWordArray[grid.selectedIndex].to = inputWordArray[grid.selectedIndex].to + "æ";
    inputWordArray.refresh();
    grid.dispatchEvent(new DataGridEvent(DataGridEvent.ITEM_EDIT_BEGINNING, false, false, colIndex, null, grid.selectedIndex));
    The problem is that this only adds a letter at the end of the selected item's value, not at a specific position within the word specified by the position of the cursor. This is what I need to achieve. I have no idea even what to search for, if anyone could please give me a hint that'd be great.

    You will probably need to capture the editor's selectionBeginIndex and
    selectionEndIndex

  • HTML Editor - converting "special characters" into entities

    Hi everyone,
    I'm currently in the middle of formatting my wife's novel into 'clean' html so I can use Calibre to create a well formatted epub/mobi/etc.
    I've read that TextMate on Mac includes a function to "Convert Selection to Entities excluding Tags".  In other words it will replace all special characters (ellipses, copyright sign, etc) with the html entities.
    I'm currently using Kate and I can't seem to find anything similar.  Is anyone aware of any linux editors with the same function?
    Thanks for the help!

    ctarwater wrote:Encoding is already UTF-8 but I'm trying to make these docs as "universal" as possible and I've read that little things like replacing quotation marks and other symbols with their html entities is a good step in that direction.
    In situations with multiple encodings this might be the case, but the XML spec requires UTF‐8 support at minimum and defaults to it when the encoding is not declared. All XML parsers can deal with UTF‐8.
    In fact, replacing UTF‐8 characters with entities is less portable in XML. This is because the available entities are defined by the doctype, and XML only supports five by default (&lt;, &gt;, &quot;, &amp;, and &apos;). Things like &hellip; are defined in the HTML and XHTML doctypes, but not in other dialects of XML. This used to bite RSS pretty hard (probably still does), because people assumed the entities were available everywhere when they’re really not. EPUB and Mobi are based on XHTML, but other formats might use other XML dialects.

  • Html special characters

    when using the Dreamweaver 'Set Text of Layer' behavior,
    Dreamweaver correctly converts all html
    special characters, such as accents like and &,
    and quotes and double quotes, so that it is safe
    as a javascript string, and will display properly.
    I am trying to figure out what PHP function can do the same
    encoding, to simple text files (textEdit
    on the Mac).
    I have tried htmlentities(), but it does not work, accented
    letters like just desappear from the
    string.
    I have tried htmlspecialchars() and it does not work
    either...
    I have tried about 10 others functions found on Google but
    nothing works.
    Anybody knows what exact function Dreamweaver uses to do this
    conversion?
