Specifying CSS in template

Hello,
Does anyone know how to specify the location of a CSS in a template? The reason I ask is that whenever I use the default templates they automatically set the location in the web report (eg rwbeige.css), but whenever I use one of my own templates, it sets the css file to be nothing or random characters. As well as a template file I've also created a html template file, but I don't see how the two link together. If anyone could help me here I'd be much obliged.

Hi Rober,
If you want to create a template for your web report, refer this tech note:

Let us know if you have Q's.

  • External CSS and Templates

    I am fairly new to using CSS and Dreamweaver having finally taken the plunge and dropped Micromumble mumble...  I am wondering about external CSS and templates.  When I assign a template to the external CSS does the CSS also translate down to the documents that are attached to the template or do each of them need to be attached to the CSS itself to work as well?  Thanks for any help offered.

    Just to clarify, if I have a class to define the color of my links in the template that is used in the uneditable regions but I also use the links in the editable regions, do I need to attach the CSS to the child as well?
    Need to clarify the terms here.
    How is the class defined and what do you mean by attached the CSS?
    Probably easier to explain by example.
    Can you paste the code here?

  • Css or template

    New to this forum and new to Dreamweaver
    MX2004……so please be gentle.
    I am in the process of teaching myself to use Dreamweaver
    MX2004 with a view to producing a website to display a range of my
    photographic work and possibly selling some images.
    I need to produce a very simple site consisting of a home
    page, a biography page, a contact page and a gallery. I want to
    have a black background with white text on each page.
    I have read about CSS and Templates. Is it best to define the
    look/appearance i.e. font/text colour/background colour of each
    page using CSS or a Template ? Any advice would be much

    Define the look of the page using CSS. Control the content of
    the page
    using Templates. Build the layout of the page using HTML.
    Each of these
    has a separate function and a separate purpose.

    This is pretty much the code the widget plays with..the issue that im having is that all the codes before </head> can not be written since the dwt only allows me to write on my editable region..

  • Question for David Powers: specifying CSS

    Each of the pages in your East-West seasons demonstration
    website uses a
    somewhat complex indirect method for specifying the CSS rules
    applying to the
    page.
    The page itself contains the php statement:
    <?php include('style_rules.php'); ?>
    Which invokes style rules.php, which in turn links in
    basic.css, and imports
    bluebells_01.css:
    Style_rules.php------------------------------------------------
    <link href="styles/basic.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css"
    media="screen" />
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    @import url("styles/bluebells_01.css");
    -->
    </style>
    This somewhat complex sequence appears to have exactly the
    same overall effect
    as the two lines:
    <link href="styles/basic.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css" media="screen" />
    <link href="styles/bluebells_01.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css"
    media="screen" />
    1. What is the reason for going through this two-step
    process, rather than
    simply linking in the two files?
    2. Why is the second stylesheet imported rather than linked
    in?
    3. I gather that the only function of php in all this is to
    enable the contents
    of style_rules.php to appear in the original file as inline
    code. Is this
    correct?

    If changes to the style sheet, styles/basic.css are made then
    they would
    update to every page which uses the php 'include'. I'm
    guessing that
    David is NOT using a template based site, which would
    effectively do the
    same thing.
    > 2. Why is the second stylesheet imported rather than
    linked in?
    'import' is used so that Netscape Naviagtor 4 only gets the
    page content
    and no css styling. A lot of css styling is not compatible
    with that
    browser. Its generally accepted for those developers that
    still support
    that browser only the content is good enough to provide.

    No, that answers in the response to your first question..

  • Is there a way to make an HTML or CSS Dreamweaver template (not a website template)?

    This might be confusing. I'm not looking for a way to create a website template but a layout/DocType template that has an HTML skeleton in place. The reason I'm asking is that I do a lot of email designs in Dreamweaver and I want to get a template in place but all I've found are these time-consuming website template tutorials that don't serve my needs.
    What I want is to be able to create something like the DW's default DocType templates that have the initial <html><head></head><body></body></html> etc.... because I can then just start adding in content and change the HTML/CSS attributes (emails require a lot of inline css) as needed.
    So far, I've been using an HTML document that I'd like to make into a template but sometimes I end up saving over it and then have to recreate it...which gets old real fast. This is why having an initial template would eliminate the worry of saving over my makeshift HTML template. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks for the help!

    Snippets is a good idea. But you can also do this with a template. Each time you use FILE | New > Page from Template, as you would to create a new child page, you have the option to enable or disable an option called "Update page when template changes". If that option is DISABLED (i.e., unchecked), then the child page will be created but with NO TEMPLATE MARKUP (i.e., no editable/non-editable regions)! Seems that's exactly what you want, no?

  • Dreamweaver can't see my css or template files

    I'm sure this is a simple problem with a simple answer, but it's baffling me...
    I'm currently setting up a new site with a new local root folder. I'd like to make some pages for this new site based on my existing css file and templates. I put these files into my new site's local root folder, then clicked through the usual 'Page from template' procedure and created a new page from one of my templates in the normal way.
    Trouble is, as soon as I try to save the page I've created, I get an error message: "This document uses the following files not in this site -" Dreamweaver then lists my css file and various image files. But all the files show up as present and correct in my new local root folder!
    The error message box gives me the option to copy the files to the local root folder of my new site - although, as I've said, as far as I can see from a glance at the Files panel, they're all there already. In any case, if I click the "Copy" button, I get another error message: "Making this change would require changing code that is locked by a template or a translator. The change will be discarded."
    I can upload the page, but it comes up with no formatting - here it is: http://www.nemesis.to/testpage.htm
    Looking at the code, I see that the css file is linked like this:
    <link href="file:///Macintosh HD/Users/michaeljohnson/Documents/newpagestyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    I suspect that might be where the problem is. I would expect that line of code to look more like this:
    <link href="newpagestyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    But I have no idea why that's happening, or where to go from here. I suppose I could re-write that line of code by hand, but that doesn't amount to fixing the problem. I'd like the whole thing to work normally from the first click!
    Have I got my css file and/or template files in the wrong place? What do I have to do so Dreamweaver can find the files?
    All advice welcome - thanks for any wise words you might have.  Sorry if this all seems very simple, but I really don't know enough about this stuff to make progress from this point.

    Oh, yes, I think it's all ludicrously over-complicated! The thing is, I've been using my templates without any trouble for ages. The problem only came up when I created a new local root folder, copied my template and css files into it, created pages using those templates and - suddenly I've got no formatting.
    Everything in the old local root folder is still working fine. I can make new pages from the template files in that folder and it's all good. It does look like the copy/paste process broke the essential links, but how could that happen?
    I suppose I could create new templates from scratch in the new local root folder, but that seems unnecessary when I've already got template files that work perfectly - in the *other* local root folder!
    Anyway, here comes the code...
    This is the page_layout.dwt file as it appears in my old local root folder. This is the file as it appears in my old local root folder - the one that that works!
    Note the link to the css file, which I've made bold here:

    Sorry for the big wedges of code - and sorry for this being such a stupid problem. I'm almost ready to scrap the whole idea of creating a new local root folder!

  • Highlight "current" page in CSS Dreamweaver TEMPLATE

    I have created 2 navigation bars (in my header) using an unordered list styled with CSS in a Dreamweaver Template that I created. Here is that template (in the template- the "Beads" link is styled as the current page): http://www.bfranklincrafts.com/Templates/MainTemplateM.dwt
    I don't want the navbars to be editable in the pages that will be created from this template, so I was NOT planning on putting the navbars in editable regions. But now I'm realizing that if I don't put the navbars in editable regions, I won't be able to go in each link in my navbars to put the "current" style for each page.
    The idea of the template is wonderful because it allows us to create one template and from that template we can make changes that would be past down to all the pages that were created using this template. But if I have to put the navbars in editable regions, it means that if I have to make changes to the navbars, I'll have to go to each individual page to make those changes.
    I really want to show the "current" page that visitors are on, can anyone help!!!
    Liolee

    Hi,
    sorry to bring up an old post but I am having issues with this myself and hope you can help?
    I have coded my site as per your example but still no luck.
    It is an .asp site. and my menu looks like this:
    <ul id="nav">
        <li><a id="home" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/index.asp"><img src="/images/nav1_gray.jpg" width="84" data-srcover="/images/nav1_full.jpg"></a></li>
        <li><a id="tech" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/88/Technical.asp#.USOIoqWduS0"><img src="/images/nav4_gray.jpg" width="102" data-srcover="/images/nav4_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
        <li><a id="construction" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/89/Construction.asp#.USOQLqWduS0"><img src="/images/nav5_gray.jpg" width="170" data-srcover="/images/nav5_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
        <li><a id="medical" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/87/Medical.asp#.USOUeaWduS0"><img src="/images/nav3_gray.jpg" width="88" data-srcover="/images/nav3_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
        <li><a id="media" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/90/Media.asp#.USOWQKWduS0"><img src="/images/nav6_gray.jpg" width="88" data-srcover="/images/nav6_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
        <li><a id="logistics" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/91/Logistics.asp#.USOXdqWduS0"><img src="/images/nav7_gray.jpg" width="100" data-srcover="/images/nav7_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
        <li><a id="allsectors" href="http://www.paycoservices.co.uk/page/86/All-Sectors.htm"><img src="/images/nav2_gray.jpg" width="120" data-srcover="/images/nav2_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></li>
        <li><a id="contact" href="http://www.ampso.co.uk/page/205/Welcome-to-Payco.asp#.USObtaWduS0"><img src="/images/nav9_gray.jpg" width="120" data-srcover="/images/nav9_full.jpg" class="wrap_right"></a></li>
    </ul>
    Now the issue arises with adding the code to the pages themselves. For example, if I go to the 'tech' page. I have no editable regions like I would with a html template (even though my main menu is in a top menu template which applies to each page) so I'm not sure exactly where to put the css code.
    Currently the top section of my 'tech' page looks like this:
    <%
    Bodystyle = "style='background:url(/images/bg-further-technical.jpg) center 0px no-repeat;'"
    %>
    <!-- #INCLUDE virtual= "/top.asp" -->
    <div id="further-banner" style="background:url(/images/technical-icon.png) 811px 9px no-repeat; ">
    <h1>Payco Technical  <span>It's your industry so why not do it your way?</span></h1>
    <p><b>You are here:</b>
    <a href="/index.asp">Home</a> /
    <a href='Payco-Technical.asp'>Payco Technical</a> /
    </p>
    </div>
    Now do I paste the css code into here? Or would it help if you saw my whole 'tech' page so you can see the rest?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • CSS and Template availability in WebI Report

    Hi All,
    Does WebI provides facility to import CSS Stylesheet for using those settings in report?
    Can we create Templates in WebI?
    Our requirement is to decrease the manual task by using single CSS Stylesheet and Templates for creating multiple/many Reports.
    Regards,
    Arjun

    Hi,
    yes, it is possible in BOEXI:
    You just have to edit the related defaultConfig.xml file on the BO Server:
    Windows based BO installation:
    <BO folder\Tomcat55\webapps\AnalyticalReporting\webiApplet\AppletConfig\defaultConfig.xml
    Unix based BO installation:
    /<BO_install_folder>/bobje/bobje/enterprise120/warfiles/WebApps/AnalyticalReporting/webiApplet/AppletConfig
    Can we create Templates in WebI?
    In XI R2 there is no support for Webi templates as there is with Deski. We worked around this by creating a Webi report with all of the standard components, header, footer, etc. and saved that to a templates folder. The report was marked read-only so no one could change it and any new reports were created by copying the template report.

  • Add spry menu to external css or template

    I have a working navigation menu at www.reachyourpotential.ca
    but I haven't used an external style sheet on this website and that
    seems to be the thing to do these days. I used cs3 to add a spry
    horizontal menu to a template (standard cs3 2 column). Should I
    move the spry menu to an external style sheet?
    I believe the benefits of an external css are faster page
    loading speed and better seo.
    I am also revising a website for a client and want to get it
    right the first time.
    Which is better - add the spry menu to an external css or a
    template?
    Thank you.

    This may sound really dumb as no one ever addresses this
    issue, but once I create the Spry menu and then create all my other
    pages from the template, what if I need to change something in the
    menu? Since the href's are located in the HTML of the sheet itself,
    not in the .css or .js, how do you get to the point where you just
    change it one place and it changes everywhere?
    Does this make sense? What piece of the puzzle am I missing?
    Thanks for any assistance.

    I have configured a dedicated site, separate from my website, for my ColdFusion administrator (CFIDE).  So I have my website here: http://www.public-site.com/ and my ColdFusion admin here: http://www.cfadmin-site.com/ .  They both live on the same server but under different directories.  So now I am configuring my ColdFusion settings and wondering if there is some way to configure the missing template handler and site-wide error handler to use files that live under the public site directory so that I can give my users a consistent look?
    I am guessing that this is not possible but thought I would ask.  I may be left with creating the modules under my ColdFusion admin directory and then using <cflocation> to redirect the user back to the public website environment.  Or embedding some javascript to redirect them.  Any other thoughts?

    OK, now I think I see where you are coming from about not needing to redirect *lightbulb* and perhaps I can explain to you what I am seeing.  Again, here is my setup:
    web root: D:\wwwroot\public-site\
    cf web root: D:\wwwroot\cfadmin-site\
    Now let's say I have a file in the web root like this: D:\wwwroot\public-site\error.cfm  If I try to enter that in my site-wide error handler in ColdFusion it tells me that the file does not exist.  Makes sense.
    So I moved my file to the cf web root like this: D:\wwwroot\cfadmin-site\error.cfm and set my site-wide error handler accordingly.  Now when I force an exception I get an error that my site-wide error handler failed.  In the logs I see this error:
    "Error","jrpp-26","11/08/10","14:02:30",,"'' The specific sequence of files included or processed is: D:\wwwroot\public-site\error.cfm'' "
    java.security.PrivilegedActionException: coldfusion.runtime.TemplateNotFoundException: File not found: D:\wwwroot\public-site\error.cfm
    So now that a template is executing ColdFusion is looking for the site-wide error handler in the web root of the public site.  But the ColdFusion administrator will not let me enter that path in the site-wide error handler setting of the administrator page.
    Did you run across this too?  Surely we don't need to have the file in both locations.

    Raizel: it's a problem with the forum and how stuff from
    there gets
    posted to the newsgroup. Per a recent post by Murray, the
    Adobe team
    are working on the problem. It's driving us all crazy.

  • CSS for background image not transfering from template to new page

    I have a gradient .gif in my templates which suddenly no longer transfers from the template to  a new page created from the template.  Everything else about the template transfers.  I'm using Dreamweaver CS5 on a Mac running OS 10.6.  I've pasted the CSS from the template and the new page below.  I've tried the usual voodoo--restart program, restart computer, repair permissions, delete preference file, delete personal configuration file.
    CSS from Template:
    .container {
        background-color: #ececec;
        background-image: url(../images/faux_column.png);
        background-repeat: repeat-y;
        height: 650px;
        width: 650px;
    CSS from page created from Template looks to be the same, but is greyed out in the code, and the background-image entry is not present in the CSS styles inspector:
    .container {
        background-color: #ececec;
        background-image: url(../images/faux_column.png);
        background-repeat: repeat-y;
        height: 650px;
        width: 650px;
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Unfortunately, I don't yet have a site where I can post the page.  I'm new to this, and doing everything locally for now.
    After careful rechecking, I found that the links for the template and the child were not the same, as you suspected.  So I carefully changed the links to site root relative, which worked for the background CSS in my test image.  I then did the same for all of the links to pages on my site, and checked that all were OK with Link Checker in DW.  I guess that was a mistake, because now most of them don't work when tested in Firefox--I get the message File not found.  Must be doing something wrong.
