Speed up Safari Start Up
My safari was taking for ever to open my homepage and many others.
The solution was simple and effective.
In Safari at the top left click EDIT, then PREFERENCE, ADVANCED, PROXIES (Change Settings).
In the Internet Properties box choose Lan Settings and Un-check the auto detect box.
That's it, things will speed waay up now.
I have SAFARI 3.0.4. My safari on my MAC is running @64KB and the PC on the router is running @ 750KB. I am plenty frustrated. I have tried the proxies change below and I don't see a LAN setting or the auto detect box. I have dumped my cache, thrown out all the cookies, taken files out of the library/safari and library/preferences. I still don't see any change. Before I loaded Leopard I had much faster speed. At one time I saw a 900KB speed.
Anyone out there have the same problem or a solution that will fix me up? I see the commercials for the MAC/ PC and right now the PC is looking better.

I am running Panther (10.3.9) with the latest updates. PowerBook G4 1GHz with 512MB RAM. Lately I've noticed that Safari takes a long time to start, i.e. the Safari icon bounces 30-40 times (~1 min.?) before it starts, whereas before it only bounces 3-4 times (within seconds). It simply takes a long time but nothing really has changed on this machine. I tried emptying the cache on all accounts and this hasn't helped. What gives?
Looks like I solved the problem. I turned off Airport, shut the computer down. I was going to try using the built-in ethernet port to see if it has anything to do with Airport itself (since Mail was having the same problem too). Turns out I didn't configure my ISP settings for the ethernet port, so I turned back on airport to retrieve the settings from the ISP's website. Low and behold, Safari starts almost instantly. Mail is back to normal speed now too.
It was the turn off and on of airport plus the system shutdown that fixed it. Don't know which worked but thanks for the tips. -

Safari start up page won't display
Safari start up page try's opening multiple times and finally says it can't display web page. It has repeatedly encountered an error while trying to display. You can then go to yahoo.com, YouTube, google, whatever you want. It want open apple.com though. I have reset my safari. I have safari 5.1.7. I try to run my disk utilities and a min into repairing disk utilities, an error occur's and doesn't finish.repairing.. I've went into system preferences, network, advanced, and then into proxies and nothing is checked in there except for the use of passive FTP Mode. Can any one help me out?
I ran the hardware test on the Application's DVD and within 3 sec's of running it, it came back with a code of 4MEM/4/40000000:0xa9f7a118. I know the MEM codes have something to do with memory. I've had our computer in 2 different times at Geeksquad. They've sent it off and replaced the hard drive on one occasion and the mother board on the other occasion. I keep telling them that it's probably the RAM, but the headquarters where they send it to keep's saying that in all there check's they've done, the RAM is fine. Everytime before they've sent my mac off i've had a chance to run the hardware test and gotten a 4MEM code back each time before these parts were replaced. Before the 1st replacement (hard drive) was replaced the code was 4MEM/4/40000000:0xa9f75e98. The 2cd replacement (mother board) the code was 4MEM/4/40000000:0xa9f75f18. Whatever the problem is, it looks like it's coming from the same place just looking at the code. This is been going on since the middle of Feb of this year.

How can I speed up the "start speaking" feature in iBooks? (System Preferences Dictation and speech does not do anything to the speech speed.) The rate is a bit to slow.
Hi, I had the same problem you described, and I noticed that there are two ways of activating text to speech on iBook for Mac, with different speed results (at least on my MacBook Pro Retina display)
On your iBook you can select the text and and then click on > More> Start speaking, and you will get a certain speed, which tends to be too slow.
But you will get the speed you had selected with "Go to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech. In there is a slider to adjust the speaking rate." if you use the TOP MENU (next to the black apple) under Edit>Speech>Start Speaking. I also learned that under System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text to speech, there is an option for a shortcut which is very helpful. And you can change Key. Hope this was helpful. -
How can I make Safari start my homepage all the time?
I don't like that Safari starts the last page that I was on everytime I run the application. How can I change this so that my default homepage is opened everytime instead?
Go to your Safari menu bar click Safari > Prefrerences then select the General tab.
You can set your home page from there.
If you are running Lion v10.7, disable the Lion "resume" feature...
Open System Preferences > General
Deselect: Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
BTW... when you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. That really helps. -
Why does Safari start at login?
When I restart or login, Safari starts up on its own. What is causing this?
Here's the EtreCheck report. I ran it shortly after Safari started up on its own again. I was away from the computer for about 20 mins after the last restart. Safari was running when I came back. The one system pref that I think MIGHT be contributing to this issue is called "Xmarks for Safari". It syncs my Firefox bookmarks with my Safari bookmarks. It runs in the background and periodically does its sync process. However, when I force "Xmarks for Safari" to sync, it does NOT trigger Safari to open.
Problem description:
Safari starts up on its own a short while AFTER restarting.

Hey is there any way possible to speed up Safari 3.1 because its kinda slow on my computer and my computer runs pretty fast and its clean?
I have found this on http://guides.macrumors.com/SpeedupSafari
it seems to have sped things up quite a bit.
Adjust the 'Render Before Display' Timer
Safari uses a technique to decrease loading times by pausing for 1 second before displaying content so far recieved. When information is first downloaded from a website, Safari uses this time to commit maximum resources to rendering the HTML code before displaying on screen. It is possible to adjust this timer to force Safari to display a page earlier. Note that this will actually increase load time as Safari is not able to render as quickly if it is also updating the display at the same time, but it can be considered as a perceived performance increase. To change the timer follow these steps:
Quit Safari
Open a new Terminal window.
Type the following:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay 0.25
You can substitute 0.25 for any numerical value from 0 to 1 seconds (e.g 0.5 or 0.75.) 1 is the default.
Press enter to save.
Close the Terminal application and re-launch Safari.
Test for changes
Your mileage may vary, and if you find little difference you might wish to reset the timer to its default settings by performing the above steps again and entering 1 as the numerical value. -
I have two iMacs in different rooms and Safari started crashing immediately after opening on both machines. latest version is installed.Any ideas?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -

Speeding up safari 3.0.3
Hello,
I was wondering how it is possible to speed up the latest safari on Mac OS Tiger 10.4.10 to the speed of say, Camino or Firefox. There has to be a way to speed up the websites and the bar on the top to load at quicker speeds.
Thank you,This usually does the trick:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions.
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved. -
Safari starts getting slower and slower loading pages
Hi, i have always been a pc person, but recently made the switch to mac. i love it, but have an issue with safari. My internet speed is 17mbps so thats ok. Now after a few weeks of browsing the safari gets slow at loading pages, i have deleted history and emptied the cache. I had spoken with support during the 90 days free support. Now that has expired. They told me to get to the "verify permissions" then do "repair permissions" as there are a lot of error messages that are brought up. Once i have done this the internet is fine again - but obviously somethig is a miss as it starts slowing down over the weeks. Would upgrading to the latest version of snow leopard sort this? any ideas of other reasons. any help much appreciated
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl. If you are running Snow Leopard, run Safari in 32 bit not 64 bit.)
Do you have enough RAM? Less than 1GB can cause slowness. Is your hard drive too full? Less than 15%, or 15GB, of free space can also cause slowness.
Adding DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:

How do I speed up the start up time on my iMac?
I have a mid 2010 iMac with the following specs:
Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
Software: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Hard drive: 1TB of which almost 800GB is free
I never had any problems with speed or startup time when running mountain lion (or whatever it was that came before Mavericks) but I stupidly upgraded to Mavericks before reading about all the bugs and now my computer is mind numbingly slow when I first turn it on. It runs ok once it starts up but the start up process has gone form less than a minute, to turn the computer on and go make a cup of coffee and it's still chugging away when I come back. I installed an extra 4gb of ram (it came from the factory with 4gb) but that only made a small difference. I really dont want to erase and reinstall everything so I've tried adding ram, repairing permissions and doing a p ram restart. Does anyone have any suggestions? These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entirecontents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list.
