and sometimes i put it in sleep mode and come home on my lunch break and the fan is running at full speed and the computer has frozen up...what is going on here? is it a virus or has my computer been hijacked? it cant be good for the computer...anyone ever had this problem..?

Your problem has been reported many times, but causes are as varied as individuals.
Can we assume that a hard shutdown allows a normal restart?
Can I assume that you have used Disk Utility from your OS X install disc to repair the hard drive directory? The freezes and hard shutdowns require that the drive be repaired (not permissions) or soon the machine won't boot at all.
If the root issue is software related, in Console (the application) under Logs, there should be loggings around the time of sleep and logs that tell you what process went wild and froze the machine.
Network activity is also a common casue.

If hardware related, such as an external drive, other USB device (Wacom tablet) or USB PCI card, ejecting, disconnecting, removing, or in the case of the Wacom, updating drivers, are all potential remedies.

  • How to speed up my computer

How to speed up my computer? Basic configuration is as below.
Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.5 GHz Processor
    Ram: 2GB
    HD: 350 GB
    Mother Board: Giga Byte
    OS: windows XP
I am using Office2007 in my PC. I have enable firewall. Can I disable it? If so, then how to protect my pc from virus attack?

There are a lot of different things you can do to speed up your PC.  First off, try to upgrade your ram,  You can Google your motherboard model to see how much and what kind it can hold.  Or go to www.crucial.com and run the analyzer that scans your system and tells you what kind and how much ram your PC can handle.  You can get ram dirt cheap these days especially if you order it online.
Next you should uninstall any unwanted or unused programs, there is a very good uninstaller called Revo uninstaller, it is free.  It removes programs and then scans for registry and other left over files from the PC.  Or you can just go to control panel---add or remove programs and do it from there.  And while your there you can go to add or remove windows components and disable anything that you don't use.
Click start click run the type "msconfig" (without the "") under the startup tab uncheck anything that is not necessary to run at startup.  This will make your PC boot faster.
If you go to  www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm  they have a complete guide to disabling unneeded services on a 32 bit windows XP PC.  There are a lot of services that you will never need or do not use.  Make sure you click on each service you are thinking about disabling and read what it is first.  You don't want to disable anything you need on accident.
I use CCleaner to clean, defrag and compress the registry.  There are other free and paid programs out there to tidy up your registry which gets a lot of errors and unnecessary entries in it every time you use your PC.
When you store a files on your PC they get fragmented and this slows your system down.  Again there are a lot of free programs to defrag your hard drive.  I use Ultimate Defrag.  With this program you can place your most used files(windows files etc) on the outer rows of your hard drive (fastest part) and the least used files or archive files on the inner rings.  It gives you many options to defrag as well as just simple defrag.
I would keep the firewall on or get a third party one.  I don't know what anti virus you use but there are numerous reviews and guides online as to which ones are the fastest and have the lightest footprint.  I use Esset, but there are a few good free ones also.  If you think you have a problem with a virus or malware download and run superantispyware pr malwarebytes, and use it alongside of your anti virus.
Go to your local bookstore and look at the PC magazines.  A lot of them have good tips to make your PC run faster and some come with free CDs that have a lot of freeware/shareware programs on them.
    Hope this helps

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They also have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the minimum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • Often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive

I also have a MacPro3,1 (2009) I believe and just started experiencing similar issues as described here.
I have scheduled sleep and start cycles and often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive or I find the computer booted in to disk utility mode.
I also often loose ethernet connectivity and have to try renewing DHCP lease several times before it will finally work.
Has anyone found solutions for this. I have looked at the console errors right before shutdown and don't really see anything fishy. Here are the last couple of lines before it looks like it shutdown.

Mac Pro early 2009 is Mac Pro4,1, anyway, I think you need to boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, then select startup volume and run repair disk.
Xcode is the latest one, by the way?

  • Speed at my computer

I have to reset my Hub every day as the speed to my computer keeps dropping whilst the connection speed to my house remains a good constant speed.
That is, it remains at about 39Mb while the download speed drops to around 4Mb and the upload speed is about 5Mb.
After reset the connection speed remains at about 39Mb and the download speed goes up to about 38Mb with the upload speed stays at about 5MB.
This happens at least twice a day. I have tried switching off various devices to see if there is any change, that is to see if any of my devices are affecting the hub, but nothing has any apparent effect.
Is my Hub faulty? We did have some thunder storms recently, could this have affected the hub? it is surge protected.

I suggest you try a factory reset of the hub

  • MacBook Pro's fans start running at high speed when the computer is asleep. Normal?

The other night, my MacBook Pro's fans started running at high speed when the computer was asleep. Loud enough to wake me up. And this just kept on going until I finally decided to turn the computer off. Is this normal? Is this anything to worry about?

This is not normal.  See if a SMC reset solves the problem:

  • Does upgrading to a larger harddrive increases the speed of your computer?

    Hi,
I was wondering if increasing the size of your harddrive is going to speed up your computer?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

Tough question that depends on several factors. First is how full was your old drive, the closer it comes to capacity the slower that makes your computer. As a general rule of thumb OS X should have a minimum of 10% free disk space to operate OK. Next is the RPM speed of the drive drives, you can buy hard disks that spin at 5,400, 7,200 & 10,000 RPM, the faster the RPM the quicker the input/output. Theoretically if you replace a 7,200 RPM drive with a 10,000 RPM drive that will speed up the input / output.
So if you are replacing a drive that is currently filled to 70% capacity that spins at 7,200 RPM with a larger capacity 7,200 RPM drive then no you probably won't notice any difference in performance. However if you are replacing a drive that is at 90% capacity that spins at 7,200 RPM with a higher capacity 10,000 RPM drive then yes you will probably see some performance increase.
Bottom line, not simple question to answer.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • How can i speed up my computer

I was wondering if I need to do anything in particular to clean up/speed up my IMac computer.  I originally purchased it in early 2010 and have not had any problems per se but at times it does appear to run slow and I am having to wait for the spinning color wheel more often now.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • HD and Speed of My Computer

    Hi Everyone,
My eMac is running really slow, I've copied everything to an external HD, now I was wondering if it is possible to completely wipe my HD(on the computer) and start anew. Will this help the speed, or any thing like that? And if it will, can I get a walk through on how to do it?

    Daniel,
Before you do that: have you ensured that the maintenance scripts are run? Tried clearing logs and caches? A third-party utility such as OnyX, MacJanitor, Coctail etc. cab be used for those tasks. Did you delete any of the user files on the HD that you now have on the external drive, so that you have at least 5 to 10 GB free space on the boot (internal) drive? • Enhancing the speed of My computer

Dear Friends I have an Old desk top computer of Hp compaq. Model number is Hp d 230 MT. I was wondering if i can enhance the speed by changing the processor from 1.8 MHZ to what ever extent.Do you think it is possible to change the processor in the present senerio .My computer Ram is 2 GB.

    Dear Mr. Paul
Sir yesterday i did go to market and after a little effort, luckily found a 2.8 Mhz Genuine Intel processor which you suggested me.and then i went to computer repair people and had it changed by 1.8 MHZ my old processor. The computer's speed has quite drastically changed.
Sir, I am thankful to you. If you would not be there to give me this suggestion, this would have never happened and i would ultimately have to buy a new computer.
I am thankful to you again. God bless you and your family.

    Hi Rebecca,
Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
How many items do you have on the Desktop? The more you have, the slower it'll be.
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

  • What are some software programs that speed up your computer and are Apple surport?

I have a early 2011 Macbook pro 15" with all the basics and i was wondering if i could speed it up with a program, beacuse when im trying to load/make and imove it sometimes just freezes and the (spinning whell of doom) comes up and its a pian the the rear. If you could help it would be greatly appriciated thanks

When it freezes and the spinning wheel occurs:
1: Does it occur upon booting the computer?
2: Does it occur when surfing the web or using the internet (checking email)?
3: Does it occur when your offline? Not connected to the internet.
4: Does it occur when you log into another user account?
5: Does it occur only with certain program(s)? Does it occur in another user account with the same program?
6: Does it occur seemingly at random? Reading a certain file?
If you don't have a copy of your personal users folder(s) on a external drive, I would be doing that as soon as possible. (in addition to a TimeMachine drive if you have it)
I suspect either your drive is failing or you have bad sectors on the drive, or it could be a network issue, becuase the spinning beach ball of death (SBOD) is typical of the computer trying to do something and getting stuck for some reason.
If the data your trying to access is on failing sectors on the hard drive, it will beach ball trying to read it, if this occurs a lot in many places many times, your drive is typically failing. However if just here or there, it could be fixed.
If your accessing the internet  it may beach ball if there is a network related issue.
It may be a corrupt cache file someplace, which clearing all of them out and rebuilding the caches would make the computer appear to run faster when it's really only back to normal.

  • Does running any Office prog. kill the overall speed of your computer?

It seems like whenever I run other UB apps concurrently, be it 10 programs or 1, the computer is SO fast and runs nicely. But once I open Word the whole computer goes into crutch mode, where everything seems to slow down. I check RAM, but it doesn't be seem to be fully utilized. What gives?

Check and see if your font book is set to load all the fonts you have.
I activated fewer fonts in font book and Word speeds up opening.
Separately, have you gotten the latest Office 2004 update?
