Speedstep or Turbo Boost and Logic CPU Meters

I'm currently weighing up selling my remainding outboard synths and going the plugin route, so last night i loaded logic up with as many plugins as i would normally use in the equivalent of hardware audio tracks to get an idea on CPU Usage, Heat build up etc. (I run on a macbook pro in clamshell to external monitor).
Just to note, i don't normally run with the CPU meter displayed so this is all quite new to see what's going on under the hood, especially as i was making a point to watch it.
What i noticed was that the CPU meter went up very quickly to about 20-30% across all cores after the initial plugins that i loaded up.. But after that point i could load several audio units and record with them, yet they were using nowhere near the same kind of overhead the initial few used.... Dare i say it, they were hardly noticable on the load.
Now, i know that intel processors have had speedstep in the past which would slow your cpu down until the demand was there, and i'm aware that the modern cpu's have Turbo Boost which increases the core speed if required.
So, what i'm curious to know is that do plugins generally cache and have less draw on a system in multiples, or is this a case of my CPU ramping up it's capability the more i pushed it?

  • Hyper-V stopped turbo boost and cpu park on my intel 4702mq processor?

    Hi I just got my lenovo thinkpad e540(core i7 4702mq ,256 hyper-x ssd, nvidea geforce 2gb...)
    I installed windows 8.1  and server 2012 r2 to separate personal and business use.
    The cpu was running at many speeds to preserve battery life (between 0.7ghz and 3.2ghz on turbo boost). After installing the  hyper-v  role, the speed in task manager is stale at 2.19ghz and
    all the cores are not being parked even when the system is idle, is this a bug or that's just how virtualization work??

  • Dv7 turbo boost and temperature question

    I have the core i7 2630QM @ 2.0 ghz with turbo boost up to 2.9 ghz.  My question is, even while running prime95 (all 8 threads at 100% usage), cpu-z says the processor only gets up to 2.6 ghz.  Now its not really a big deal because even at that speed almost nothing can max it out, im just curious why its not getting all the way up there.
    And now its time to discuss temperature...even after just 15 mins of prime95, all 4 cores of my cpu were up to 80 degrees celcius and the motherboard sensor said 82...that's rather high isnt it? While im gaming all temps hover at around 70 or 75 degrees...is that near the danger zone? I appreciate any answers! thanks

    I don't think there is any way to turn these off. The processor will use hyperthreading and powerboost automatically depending on the load on the CPU and whether it needs hyperthreading and powerboost. Powerboost is used for heavy graphics if I'm not mistaken.

    Sure you are correct. A SSD drive will be better and I will get to it perhaps. The turbo module era came and went rather rapidly especially because of the others complicating technologies such as AF and the poor attention given to the necessary drivers. I am just curious if the Middletion BIOS allowing SATA II or III (not sure) on the AF HDD (1 and 1.5 Terabytes are), which are suppose to be compliant, does improve performance on them.

  • MBA2012 cpu multiplier wrong and no turbo boost in Windows7

    MBA2012 Corei 7 2.0GHz/ MEM 8GB / SSD 128G.
    core i7 3667U, it support turbo boost, max multiplier 3.2GHz (x32, 2core), or 3.0GHz(x30, 1core).
    but check cpu-z 1.60.1.x64, it reports cpu multiplier x8 or x19.
    core speed does not rearch 2.0GHz(x20) and can not turbo boost.

    It is assumed in the model CTO in the initialisation of the MSR in EFI, is to set the Target P-State and 19 at the time of turbo boost, and the root cause of the bug (I originally set 32 ​​is correct).
    As a temporary workaround, in the application of the Throttle Stop, but it was confirmed that Turobo Boost working effectively, then, I tried to examine the state of the MSR at the before and after application of the Throttle Stop.

    Hey, all.
    There is a lot of conflicting information on whether the new Core i5 MacBook Airs (as opposed to the upgraded Core i7 options) support hyper-threading. As best I can gather, there is still no "official" Apple statement on the subject. I thought I'd gin up another conversation in the event someone has more definitive information. In case anyone wants a fresh bit of provocation, earlier today I asked one of Apple's online "Live Chat" experts. Here's what she said:
    The Core i7 offers Triple Channel memory, hyper-threading, and full dual 16x video bandwidth.
    But the i5 doesn't offer the TurboBoost or hyperthreading.
    You would have to do the upgrade to the i7 for that.
    Agree? Disagree?

    Here is a comparison of the three processors used for the 2011 MBA.
    It would appear that the i5 does have Turbo Boost (and Hyperthreading), unless Apple's specification calls for disabling TB.
    But, if we look at some of the benchmark testing, the results would seem to imply that the specification only differs by the differences shown in these charts, hence Turbo Boost would be evident across all the Airs.

    TurboBoost is an elevation of clock speed to help speed up certain tasks. It momentarily switches the processor to a single core running at a faster speed.  It does so in an effort to manage speed and energy efficiency.

  • Permanently Disabling Turbo Boost

    I currently use the following command to disable Turbo Boost, and it works:
    echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo
    I would like this to be permanent, each time I boot this setting is lost. I've found plenty of articles online with how to disable this exactly as I have done above, but can't seem to find any information on how to make this "stick." There is no setting in my BIOS for disabling Turbo Boost, so I must rely on some sort of Arch tweak to keep it disabled. Is there a way to make this permanent?

    I've already "read the wiki" and neither of the two links posted above are relevant to my question. One of them even says that it may not work with "sys" devices. I've been researching this all day, and thought maybe someone here could help me. I should've known better.
    Sometimes I wonder what the point is in volunteering to answer questions in a forum, but only to make "RTFM" posts. If your heart is not in it, then why do it? This is very sad. My recommendation is to automate the process and write forum scripts to automatically post RTFM replies for you, it may save you guys a lot of time. I bet no one would even notice the replies were coming from bots.

     Considering Turbo boost seems to work quite well in kicking the mHz from 1500 to 3000 when needed, I wonder how much extra horsepower I'd actually see if I oclocked this i5 to say 3.4 mHz?  And would I be turning turbo boost OFF when overclocking?

    i think turbo boost increase the clock for your processor from 2.66 to 3.2 but it'll reach that 3.2 only if you use a single core of your processor.

    turbo boost is just enabled unless disabled in the BIOS. There is no way to overclock your laptop. You can install this little app to track the turbo boost and be sure it is working:

    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
    Intel Turbo Boost is very useful in certain situations, especially if you’re doing “heavy” computational work. Intel Turbo Boost Technology is usually enabled by default. You can disable and enable the technology through the BIOS if you have an option listed there. Once enabled, Intel Turbo Boost Technology works automatically under operating system control.
    To disable Intel turbo boost within Windows, try the below fix.
    Go into Power options (Control panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options) and click Change plan settings near your plan.
    Then click on Change advanced power settings.
    Scroll down to Processor power management and expand it.
    Expand Maximum processor state and modify both on battery and Plugged in to 99%.
    Then simply click Apply and OK.
    Also please make sure, that Minimum processor state is not greater than Maximum processor state (in this case - 99%), because this fix won’t work. I suggest you to set it to 5% or so.
