Spelling and grammar not working on word

so i'm doing my university dissertation on word. the file has been working fine. i loaded a file from an external drive with a presentation on it. the spell check didn't work on the file, but that was fine. i later continued my work, but spelling and grammar won't work. i get the information shown in the screen shot attached and it won't let me view or edit the spelling and grammar option on the preferences. i've tried loads of things, including watching every youtube video on the matter that never helps. i'm no good at spelling and grammar so i really need this back asap. i've deleted all the files i was using from the external drive, i've been through loads of options to try and get it back, but no luck. please help.

(spelling and grammar won't 'light up' and i can't select it at all.)

I've got the same problem.
Have you found the solution yet?

Also search/ask in the forums run by the people who make that app.  Word does not use any Apple spelling or grammar stuff.

  • Using Mavericks Spelling and Grammar in Pages document causes Pages to freeze. Must Force Quit. Mavericks spell checker works OK in Text and Emails. How can I fix this problem?

Using Mavericks' Spelling and Grammar in a Pages document causes Pages to freeze, Must Force Quit. How can I fix this problem?
Mavericlks Spelling and Grammar works in Pages when used manually. And it works automatically in Text and email.

    Another autocorrect bug:
I type a lot of lyrics, which tend to cotain words like ’cause and ’em instead of because and them.
I've set up autocorrect instances to change a plain apostrophe with an ending, single curly quote for these words, but they are invariably changed to a beginning, single curly quote mark by Pages. The only way I can get the correct curly quote is to type over the wrong quote manually and hope that I don't have to edit the rest of the word again, as this would cause autocorrect to kick in again and change the quote to the wrong, beginning curly mark again.
Does anyone know how to get around this tedious problem?

  • After installing acrobat my Microsoft office package does not work properly, word will not open and in my email i can't select anything with the mouse

After installing acrobat my Microsoft office package does not work properly, word will not open and when I want to write an email in my outlook email i can't select anything with the mouse. so copy past en delete are not an option.@

Are you using any MS Office third party Add-ins? Test:  Remove third party Add-ins other than PDFMaker.  Test to see if the MS Office apps run afterward.
Did you attempt to repair MS Office?  Test:  Go to Add/Remove Control Panel run Repair.
Finally, have you tried testing to see if it's PDFMaker?  Test: Use the Add/Remove Control Panel to modify the Acrobat installation to remove PDFMaker.  See if MS Office applications launch and behave correctly?

signed up twice for adobe pdf export to word and still not working - anyone else have this problem?

    In XI.
I can’t just export to word as I have done in the past in one simple click.
Convert to button is greyed out.
Now I have to save the pdf file on c drive when I am in outlook…then goto export pdf file…then find file then export to word.
I bought new computer with windows 8 (which is awful) and then bought pdf export again…
Any thoughts on how I can get back to one simple click again when I open a pdf file from an email in outlook?
    Thank you,
    Mike

  • Spelling and grammar check not identifying problems?

I recently updated my office, and it is no longer identifying mistakes. I have tried to go to tools and setting, but when I select the spelling and grammar check it just says it is complete without fixing any errors.

Select the word, then RIGHT- or CTRL-click to see either suggestions or to look up in the Dictionary. If spell checking is turned on then a misspelled word will appear with a wavy read line below it. There is no grammar checker in OS X.

  • Language and Grammar not correcting

    Hi everybody,
So I updated to Pages 5. With Pages '09, I could write texts in different languages (English and Italian, I am a teacher) and it would correct the words and grammar for each language (underline in red and green). Pages 5 seems to have lost this feature, but I am not sure. Can anyone help me? I *need* this feature in order to work with Pages
    Thanks

You need to set the language in Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar
You may find that it is better to stay with Pages 09 for your needs.  It should still be on your machine in Applications/iWork.

  • Spell check in Mail and Safari not working

Since I've upgraded to 10.5.1 spell check no longer works in mail. It does not underline any incorrect spellings. Also in Safari 3.0.4, when I fill out forms and make a misspelling, spellcheck will underline the word but when I right click on it I do not get the contextural menu to correct it. The misspelled work just highlights and then the red undeline disappears leaving the incorrect spelling intact. How can I get spell check working correctly?
    Thanks,
    Pat

This is a fairly old thread. Did the OP's (Patrick) problem go away? Was there a solution?
If you control-click in a new message, is Spelling and Grammar in the pop-up context? Can you select it? If you do, does it find misspelt words? If you deliberately misspell a word, put the insertion point in the middle of it and then control-click, does the pop-up offer a list of alternatives?

  • Spelling and Grammar

I'll post here as this works globally - Not just the finder and dock, but I don't see where else it should go.
In spelling and grammar - I accidentally checked 'learn' on an incorrectly spelled word. How can I remove this from the dictionary (I don't want it to think that word is correct if I misspell it again).
    Thanks

    Try this:
Go to Users / Your Name / Library / Spelling
There you'll see a file called EN-GB (in my case, it may be EN_US in the States for instance). It can be edited with text Edit.

  • Spelling and Grammar check

Coming from entourage I am used to seeing on-going spelling and grammar check - right click and you can see the suggestions. In Mail I have set to check as I type but can't right click to correct and need to pull up the spelling and grammar box (command and ":") before sending. Any way this can be changed?
Also how do I get the URLs in emails to be underlined when typed and not only when sent?

Select the word, then RIGHT- or CTRL-click to see either suggestions or to look up in the Dictionary. If spell checking is turned on then a misspelled word will appear with a wavy read line below it. There is no grammar checker in OS X.

  • TS3276 Spell checker on Mail and Pages not working.

I have lost the capacity to check spelling on all Apple programs. I deleted Mac Keeper as I read this had caused the problem, but still no spell checker. Can anyone assist?

    Hey Vic,
If the problem was indeed with MacKeeper, then you might need to reinstall your OS. Assuming you've got a good backup, it should be pretty easy to do—either redownload the software from the Mac App Store and follow the instructions (if you upgraded) or boot into Recovery Mode and do it from there.
If I were you, I'd probably do a little sleuthing first. If you go into System Preferences> Language & Text, does everything seem to be configured properly? Is English the top language under the "Language" tab? Under the "Text" tab, is "Spelling" toggled to "Automatic by Language"? If you misspell a word in Mail and press Command-; (the shortcut for Edit> Spelling and Grammar> Check Document Now), does anything happen?
If everything seems OK, I'd probably just reinstall.

  • Mac 10.10 (Yosemite), 365 2011for Mac, Disabling Spelling and Grammar for GCSE examinations in UK

I have a network of 20 new iMacs and manage them through a Mac OS 10.10 Server. I have  created a number of groups on the server and would like
to allocate restricted permissions for each group. One group - the GCSE and Controlled Assessment group, requires access only to Word and Excel but in addition, the disabling of spelling and grammar facilities (in all its forms) across all relevant software
    - for public examination purposes. I would like to do this centrally, on the server but cannot see how to disable spelling etc. without also disabling other functions. I am happy to disable the facility on each machine (which will of course, affect other users).
Any help would be gratefully received.

  • Safari Spelling and Grammar Ignore Button

A friend noticed that when checking spelling using the Spelling and Grammar option in Safari (Edit->Spelling and Grammar->Show Spelling and Grammar) and clicking the Ignore button when rejecting a suggestion, Safari would reload the page ... the reloaded page would loose anything he had typed into a field.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior? I've been able to reproduce the behavior several times and I tried a search Apple Safari Communities but nothing came up for "Spelling and Grammar".
    Thanks!

Thanks Reverse_Parn, I did a virus scan on my computer and it didn't highlight anything. I did a disc cleanup and de fragged my hard drive in case something was amiss there but it still does it. I think I will try to download Safari again on my PC as I initially did it on my laptop (which runs Vista) and then burnt it onto a disc to install it on my PC (which runs XP) because my internet explorer on my PC was broken and couldn't access the internet at all. Just thinking maybe I downloaded the correct Safari for my Laptop but not my PC. Time will tell!

  • Spelling and Grammar error

Whenever I close Safari a pop up appears entitled 'Spelling and Grammar:Safari.exe Application error'
It then says 'The instruction at 0x03d6bcbf referenced memory at 0x047c206c. The memory could not be 'read'. Click on OK to terminate the program.'
It's not a major problem and doesn't affect the running of Safari in anyway other than when I close it!
Anyone have any idea what to do to stop it happening?
    Thanks in advance.
