    Create pfile from spfile when oracle in idle mode
    from where it creates pfile?? note:-oracle is in idle stage..

    Since you are asking for creating PFILE so I think below text will answer your question :
    If you do not specify spfile_name, then the database uses the spfile that is currently associated with the instance, usually the one that was used a startup. If no spfile is associated with the instance, then the database looks for the platform-specific default server parameter file name. If that file does not exist, then the database returns an error.http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e26088/statements_6008.htm#i2072768

  • Spfile in Oracle 9.2.0

    One of the steps for manual oracle database upgrade from 8.1.7 to 9.2.0 include creation of spfile.
    My question is: Do we really need to use spfile (server parameter file) and if yes - what the advantage(es) for using it?
    Thank you,
    Yelena

    No, you do not need to use it. Upon startup, if Oracle cannot find the spfile (default location $ORACLE_HOME/dbs) then it will look for the pfile in the default location. But I can't think of any good reasons why you would not want to use the spfile, unless it's on a test system where it doesn't matter how often or when you bounce your instance to make changes take effect. The spfile allows you to dynamically set numerous parameters for the system that would otherwise require a shutdown to initialize. Once you start using it, you'll look back on the "old" way and think you lived in the stone age. Just use 'ALTER SYSTEM SET ... SCOPE=[MEMORY] | [SPFILE] | [BOTH]'
    where 'MEMORY' means it is just active for your session; 'SPFILE' means it is written to the spfile and activated after the next restart; and 'BOTH' . . . well, I4ll let you figure that one out.
    One of the parameters you cannot change dynamically is the large_pool. There are probably more, if anyone knows them please help me out here.
    Hope this helps.

    thanx

    first of all, thanx for giuding me as im a student doing a course in this
    what abt the creation of spfile.. in a documentation for steps in creating database, they have mentioned it as recommended in creating spfile.here are some notes regarding this ....for oracle 10g
    Step 5: Create a Server Parameter File (Recommended)
    Oracle recommends that you create a server parameter file as a dynamic means of maintaining initialization parameters. The server parameter file is discussed in "Managing Initialization Parameters Using a Server Parameter File".
    The following script creates a server parameter file from the text initialization parameter file and writes it to the default location. The script can be executed before or after instance startup, but after you connect as SYSDBA. The database must be restarted before the server parameter file takes effect.
    -- create the server parameter file
    CREATE SPFILE='/u01/oracle/dbs/spfilemynewdb.ora' FROM
    PFILE='/u01/oracle/admin/initmynewdb/scripts/init.ora';
    SHUTDOWN
    -- the next startup will use the server parameter file
    EXIT
    the error : db_name does not match with the parameter.
    its still taking the default orcl database name

    From system tablespace minimum required size means free space from system tablespace or total size of system tablespace?
    i am going to use dbua utility for upgrade means does it alter tablespace as per output of scripts or we need to manually alter tablespace size as per requirement?

  • Oracle XE Western version not working on Windows XP pro

    I have noticed that production version of the Oracle XE Western version does not work properly. The beta version created the database properly, the production version does not. I tried to install it on a Windows XP Pro version.

    There are a couple of things to consider here
    Why is this install going into c:\oracle\xeprod ? If should be going into C:\oraclexe. Did you do something to change the default install infrastructure ?
    Secondly - sometimes we see this unable to open file error message if some other process is reading the file at the same time as the installer is trying to install it. Anti virus software and Google desktop have been culprits to date.

  • Why do I need the link spfileDBNAME.ora to +DATA/DBNAME/PARAMETER/spfile..

    Hi
    One month before I stated the question
    >
    Why do I need the an alias  spfileDBNAME.ora to *ASM-File +DATA/DBNAME/PARAMETER/spfile..*
    >
    in a RAC-Environment.
    Levi Pereira gave me kindly the answer in the Thread:
    Re: RAC Backup + Restore & Recover
    But I can find now this answer in this Thread!
    Can Levi or somebody else give me the answer again?
    Thank in advance

    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16795/admin.htm#CHDHFIGC says:
    >
    Oracle recommends that you do not use the default SPFILE names because all instances must use the same file and they all have different SIDs. Instead, store the SPFILE on Oracle ASM. If you store the SPFILE on a cluster file system, then use the following naming convention for the SPFILE: $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfiledb_unique_name.ora. Create a PFILE named $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initsid.ora that contains the name SPFILE=ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfiledb_unique_name.ora.

  • Using ORADIM to create instance on Oracle 10g R2, windows platform

    Please I used the below command to create database instance to startup at the same time as of the OS is starting up.
    ORADIM -new -sid ORCL -SRVC OracleServiceORCL -STARTMODE auto -SRVCSTART system -PFILE C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\INITORCL.ORA
    But When I shutdown the all system at OS level, and restart it, the OracleServiceORCL shows up as Started Automatic in the services tool, but when trying to connect ot the database, the following message appears Connected to an Idle instance So I have to startup manually the database.
    It's any thing wrong with my ORADIM command?
    Thanks for your cooperation

    Thanks,
    Maybe I didn't explain exactly what I was expecting with the standby database, these steps are what I did, to resolve the issue
    ENABLE THE STANDBY DATABASE TO STARTUP FROM SPFILE
    Step 1: create a newly spfile from the current pfile
    SQL> CREATE SPFILE='C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\SPFILEORCL.ORA' FROM PFILE='C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\INITORCL.ORA';
    Step 2: Rename the INITORCL.ORA TO SAVE_DATE_INITORCL.ORA
    Example: the C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\INITORCL.ORA became
    C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\SAVE_24072007_INITORCL.ORA
    Step 3: delete the former sid created
    C:\ORADIM -delete -sid orcl
    Instance deleted.
    Step 3: Change the Oracle service to start when the OS start
    C:\ ORADIM -new -sid ORCL -SRVC OracleServiceORCL -STARTMODE auto -SRVCSTART system -SPFILE
    Instance created.
    Now When I shutdown the whole system and start it up, the standby database startup. the only thing is that the standby database startup a read-only mode, defautl with oracle 10g this is fine for me, because the MRP is stopped but the log shipping is not stopped.
    So eventhough the system admin shutdown the database server at OS level without letting me know, tha standby should continue receiving archived log files.
    I'll just need to monitore the lop apply process and start it to apply archived log files received
    Thanks

  • Oracle Upgrade --  Pre-Upgrade 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.1

    Hello,
    I want to do an Oracle Upgrade to version 11.2g!
    At this point I did some things (in Windows Server 2003 X64):
    1-) Install Oracle 10.2.0.1 (DVD Media);
    2-) Installation of Oracle patchset 10.2.0.4 (note 871735);
    3-) Installation of interim / last generics patch (note 1137346);
    4-) Installation of SAP ECC 6.0 SR3 by SAPInst
    5-) After SAP installation I did all the corrections in Oracle parameters as it mentioned in note 830576.
    As you see above, all the SAP system was well installed!
    But now I want to do the Oracle Upgrade process to the last version, Oracle DB 11.2g  (11.2.0.1)... and so I´m following the Upgrade guide "Upgrade to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2) Windows.pdf" with some SAP notes for Upgrade process.
    So I´m at this point in planning chapter where is recommended to check so things in actual database, one of this checks are running some SQL-scripts to perform an Oracle database upgrade with DBUA to release 11.2 (as mentioned in note 1431793 - Oracle 11.2.0: Upgrade Scripts)
    I ran two Pre-Scripts, the @pre_upgrade_status.sql and @pre_upgrade_tasks.sql but both outputs showed some warnings and they are worrying me... so what I ask to you is some kind of help in analyse of them and tell me if this issues are relevant for the upgrading process and if so, what you recommend me to do to correct their!
    Next I will post here this two log scripts... they are long!!!

    Recommendations
    Oracle recommends gathering dictionary statistics prior to
    upgrading the database.
    To gather dictionary statistics execute the following command
    while connected as SYSDBA:
    EXECUTE dbms_stats.gather_dictionary_stats;
    Oracle recommends removing all hidden parameters prior to upgrading.
    To view existing hidden parameters execute the following command
    while connected AS SYSDBA:
    SELECT name,description from SYS.V$PARAMETER WHERE name
            LIKE '\_%' ESCAPE '\'
    Changes will need to be made in the init.ora or spfile.
    Oracle recommends reviewing any defined events prior to upgrading.
    To view existing non-default events execute the following commands
    while connected AS SYSDBA:
      Events:
