Does sun Cluster 3.0/3.1 HA Oracle agent support to use Oracle spfile?
When defining the resource, the 'parameter_file' properties is usually sets to the Oracle pfile. Is it possible to use Oracle spfile?
It is said if leaving 'parameter_file' NULL, it will be default to Oracle default. Suppose leaving it NULL and with Oracle spfile created in default location, will it use the spfile?You did not specify which Sun Cluster version and Oracle version you are running.
Within SC 3.1 my understanding is that beginning with Oracle 9i it is possible to use the spfile.
If you leave the "parameter_file" property empty (NULL) then the default behaviour for 9i should work:
search under $ORACLE_HOME/dbs in the order:
1. spfile$(ORACLE_SID}.ora
2. spfile.ora
3. init${ORACLE_SID}.ora

Error Creating Spfile / DB
I'm trying to create a 9.2 db for thei first time (I'm used to 8), but running into an error just trying to create the spfile. It used to get past the create spfile statement earlier (and, unfortunately, fail on the create database) but now it can't even get that far. I've included the output generated when runing my db script and below that is the init file. Help :( Thanks.

Unable to startup 12c RAC database, can't open spfile in ASM
hello,
I'm testing 12cRAC database on RHEL5 and need your help to troubleshoot and fix the following issue -
DBCA fails at the end of the configuration to create and startup new RAC database with the following errors
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
ORA-01565: error in identifying file '+DATA/TDB1/spfileTDB1.ora'
ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/TDB1/spfileTDB1.ora
ORA-15056: additional error message
ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATA/TDB1/spfiletdb1.ora
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
I also tried executing script (which was created by DBCA) to create the new DB manually and got the same results - it happens during first attempt to start it up using SPFILE after new DB was successfully created (it was started up using pfile)
Clusterware with ASM install was successful, binaries were also installed without issues,
cluster seems healthy, I see correct files within ASM using asmcmd etc ..
got stuck here and need some directions ... very confused by ORA-01017 password error
wonder if anyone had same or similar issues ?
Thank you !Fixed.
Thank you everyone for suggestions and recommendations -
ASM is accessible using asmcmd and I can see all the DB files incuding spfile, they were created by DBCA, alert log showed same information I posted
After extensive troubleshooting and testing the issue was idedntified and fixed - 'dba' group needs to be the primary group for 'oracle' user, not the secondary one. I suspected that something was not right with 'oracle' user access to asm based on that strange password error. There is more I need to check as the issue and fix with swapping groups seems strange. Secondary group is not enough ti have proper rights ??? my first reaction was - seriously ? wtf ?
Anyway - I need to move one now ...
Thank you again ! -
About spfile creating in oracle 10g while creating a new database
hi everyone,
i had this problem while i was creating a new database in oracle 10g.when running the database script, it gives an error about invalid option for create temporary tablespace. is it necessary to have an spfile created in 10g. when the script was not working,we tried to create spfile which gives error tht it does not match the parameter db_name. its taking the default db_name=orcl itself..tis not taking our new db name.
im creating it manually through sql prompt not through DBCA.the problem is that its still accepting the default db name. please send me the solution with syntaxes.
thanxfirst of all, thanx for giuding me as im a student doing a course in this
what abt the creation of spfile.. in a documentation for steps in creating database, they have mentioned it as recommended in creating spfile.here are some notes regarding this ....for oracle 10g
Step 5: Create a Server Parameter File (Recommended)
Oracle recommends that you create a server parameter file as a dynamic means of maintaining initialization parameters. The server parameter file is discussed in "Managing Initialization Parameters Using a Server Parameter File".
The following script creates a server parameter file from the text initialization parameter file and writes it to the default location. The script can be executed before or after instance startup, but after you connect as SYSDBA. The database must be restarted before the server parameter file takes effect.
-- create the server parameter file
CREATE SPFILE='/u01/oracle/dbs/spfilemynewdb.ora' FROM
PFILE='/u01/oracle/admin/initmynewdb/scripts/init.ora';
SHUTDOWN
-- the next startup will use the server parameter file
EXIT
the error : db_name does not match with the parameter.
its still taking the default orcl database name -

Hi,
we are installed clusterware on windows 2003.and the database software.
we created 5 raw device for ocr,ocr mirror,voting disk and remanings are for datafiles and controlfiles.
we installed successfully.but when we reboot the system,we got the error
which is indicating spfile related due to path.
i think i made a mistake while installing oracle database,selecting spfile location.
i read the documents about rac installation .but no tell about mount point location for spfile and datafile and controlfile.all the documents saying remove drive or path for raw device.my question is how the process find or identity the location of spfile or datafile or controlfile.Hi,
Thanks for reply.I forget to mention database version 10.1.2,and clusterware 10gR2.sorry for that.
I installed clusterware then VIP and database.we checked crs healthcheck.it was ok.
what we made a mistake.
whether we have to set mount point for spfile( raw device) and datafile and controlfile.
please help me out that. -

I am not able to restore spfile from rman backup ;;;Hi,
I would like to know few things
1. How are you setting the db_name ? you can set db_id at RMAN, how are you setting the db_name ?
2. Do you have any default init file at default location ? if yes, is the db_name parameter set correctly in that file ?
Since spfile is yet to be restored, you must set the db_name parameter correctly before you start spfile restore.This can be done with init file at default location which can even contain just one paremeter i.e db_name. -

Why does the RMAN Backup struck at Controlfile , SPFile autobackup?Hello;
I believe the issue is caused by your media management software. You should contact your media management vendor.
Try the same operation to disk and I bet it works.

I can only backup the datafiles but not the control files and SPFiles
Hello, all,
I am using the Oracle 10g on a linux server which runs redhat 9. I want to backup the whole database to the disk, but not the flash recovery area. It is /rawdata. I will show how I configure the backup part in EM. Is there anything wrong?
1. the ARCHIVELOG is on
2. under Administration, in the All Initialization Parameters, I remove the string value of “log_archive_dest_1”. After that, I go to the SPFile and remove the string value of “log_archive_dest_1”
3. configure backup settings and policies. The Disk Backup Location field is set to /rawdata. Select Image Copy for Disk Backup type. Test Disk backup is successful.
4. go to Policy page. Select “Automatically backup the control file and server parameter file (SPFile) with every backup and database structural change.) input /rawdata into the filed: Autobackup Disk Location
Select “Optimize the whole database backup by skipping unchanged files such as read-only and offline datafiles that have been backed up”
Select “Retain backups that are necessary for a recovery to any time whin the specified number of days (point-in-time recovery)
Accept the default of 31days
5. go to Schedul Backup
6. select customized from the backup Strategy drop-down menu. Select the Whole Database
7. in the Options page, select “Full backup” in the Backup Type section. Select “Online Backup” in the Backup Mode section. Select “back up all archived logs on disk” in the Advanced section.
8. in the Setting page, select “Disk”
9. in the Schedule page, accept the default job name and description. Select Immediately to execute the job immediately.
10. just submit the job.
After several minutes, the job is failed while the Prebackup and Postbackup are succeeded. The log says:

It seems the system tries to find a file “arch_D-ORCL10G_id-770753237_S-1062_T-1_A-586368151_cqhvf270” in /rawdata. I just can not understand.
What should I do? Any advice is highly appreciated!
Qianthe string value in the field of 'log_archive_dest_1" under "All Initialization parameters" is "LOCATION=+DATADG/orcl10g/". The same value was in the field under SPFile.
I reset these values and tried to backup the whole database. The same error appeared. The log says:

Why the system keeps trying to find files under /rawdata? It is the destination, not the source.

RMAN retention policy - backup spfile and then redundancy = 5 removes it.
I have a database that is Oracle Standard Edition and it is version 9.2.0.6.
The spfile has not changed since November, 2005. A list backup does not show an spfile backup with a tag of "hot_database_spfile_backup_full". I took a close look at the RMAN script log and was shocked to discover that the spfile backup from the current day is being deleted. Is that because of the redundancy = 5? I'm trying to figure out why a backup piece from the current day is being deleted?
Examples follow.
The script deletes obsolete with redundancy = 5, however, I believe the intent was to keep 25 days because one of the configure clauses is set to a recovery window of 25 days. I realize that the redundancy overrides the configure retention policy command. I can fix the script and remove the redundancy = 5.
In the RMAN run statement, I first resync the catalog, backup the spfile, a full backup of the database including current controlfile plus archive log (delete input), resync catalog, switch logfile, and backup any additional archive logs. The backup looks fine.
Then, I allocate a channel for maintenance type sbt. The script then has a "delete noprompt expired backup;" a "delete noprompt obsolete redundancy = 5;" and finally, a crosscheck;
example of backup piece that is later deleted:

deleted backup piece
backup piece handle=P*****_2338_1_596145614_FULL recid=2039 stamp=596145614
Deleted 12 objects
Why is a backup piece created on 7/18 being deleted in the maintenance step?
Thanks in advance!In the next step in the script, the controlfile and spfile are backed up:
backup
full
skip inaccessible
tag hot_database_backup_full
format '%d_%s_%p_%t_FULL'
(Database
include current controlfile)
Plus Archivelog delete input;
Even though my backup script is redundant by backing up the spfile twice, when I list the backup of the spfile, I would have expected to find 5 backups with a tag of hot_database_spfile_backup_full and 5 with a tag of hot_database_backup_full. That is not the case. I only find spfiles with a tag of hot_database_backup_full. i am still perplexed by RMAN.
I will modify my script - remove the backup of the spfile, and crosscheck before the delete commands. I will also remove the redundancy = 5. The intent is to keep 25 days of backups.
Thanks for your comments -
How to edit spfile in RAC with location +DATA/
Dear All,
My RAC is 2 node 11gR2 on Linux.
I need to modify my spfile since my UNDO tablespace is giving error while Oracle Starts up:
ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced
ORA-30012: undo tablespace 'UNDOTBS2' does not exist or of wrong type
I changed UNDO TABLESPACE recently using alter system only.
Now I want to change the UNDO TABLESPACE in spfile.
When i go to dbs directory i can see the parameter file and its contents are: SPFILE='+DATA/racdb/spfileracdb.ora'
I need to edit this file, how can i edit it?
Kindly help
Regards,
Imranmrimran,
After asking an enormous amount of doc questions you should know
alter system scope=spfile
alters the spfile
You should also know how to find the documentation (searchable) at http://tahiti.oracle.com and to use it
Your abuse of this forum with doc questions is completely unacceptable.
I will, from now on, mark every further doc question from your handle as abuse of this forum. Every question, until moderators have removed you!!!

File Count using SPFile Object
Hi,
I am trying to get the file count using through SPFile within the selected dates of date time controls as below.
But not able to get the count of the files in the folder as there is not count property in the SPFile object.
Please share your ideas/thoughts on the same.
foreach (SPFile file in oFolder.Files)
if ((file.TimeCreated > dtFromDate.SelectedDate) &&( file.TimeCreated<dtToDate.SelectedDate))
int filecount;
Regards,Sudheer
Thanks & Regards, SudheerHi ,
as you have int filecount, increase the count whenever it satisfies the if condition as mentioned
above.
int filecount=0;
foreach (SPFile file in oFolder.Files)
if ((file.TimeCreated > dtFromDate.SelectedDate) &&( file.TimeCreated<dtToDate.SelectedDate))
filecount++;
Thanks,
Vivek

Clearing (removing) an SPFILE parameter
11.2.0.3/Solaris
I want to clear the value set for LOCAL_LISTENER and set it to null. As per doc, I have to use RESET command. But RESET works only with SCOPE= SPFILE . ie. I have to bounce the DB to bring this change into effect.

if you want to set local_listener for only this session
ALTER SYSTEM SET LOCAL_LISTENER='' SCOPE=MEMORY;
if you want to make it persistent (need rebound to take effect):
ALTER SYSTEM SET LOCAL_LISTENER='' SCOPE=SPFILE;
if you want use at this session and make persistent when rebound database:
ALTER SYSTEM SET LOCAL_LISTENER='' SCOPE=BOTH;
2)SQL> alter system reset LOCAL_LISTENER scope=both;
alter system reset LOCAL_LISTENER scope=both
