Spotlight lost in Mavericks Personal User Account.

Hi does anyone know how to bring up Spotlight or I should say reinstate Spotlight, I've lost it completely since the last auto update. Using Finder is nowhere as using Spotlight, thanks.

I still need a bit of guidance with this please.  When I enter the expanded finder and open up the "Kids" Library folder, under Managed Items/My Applications, it lists all the duplicate application shortcuts.  I've deleted these again.  Put them in the trash, logged out and restarted.  Once logging back in, again, I have duplicates occuring. What is going on??  Please help.  I'm not sure what else to try or do.  There has to be a simple fix to this.  Doesn't there?

  • What is the "best" way to configure iTunes on an iMac with personal user acounts so each user can access the media library but sync devices on their personal user account?

I am trying to determine the best way to set up our imac so each user account can access the same media (songs, movies etc.) through itunes and also back up and manage their personal devices under their own personal user account.  There are 4 users on our iMac.  Me, my wife, and our 2 children.  We have built an extensive library of music/media together using the same iTunes store account.  I would like to establish a seperate apple id and iTunes store account for each of us going forward but have the ability for each of us to share our purchases.  What is the best way to configure our system and devices in order to allow shared access to media and at the same time allow for individual management of devices including contacts, apps, photos, etc. Please help, I would like to do this once!
    Thank you in advance!

OK, seeing as no-one replied (presumably because a lot of this information is on the forums in bits elsewhere) here's how I've got on so far.
Applications - just went through them.  About the only one I needed was my media server app.  Just downloaded and re-installed, had a quick look back though my email to find the license key and it all went on fine.  Installation never seemed quite right on my old machine so solved that problem too.
Movies - New iMovies just copied across the clips and projects into their respective folders.  Seems to have worked but haven't checked it all that thoroughly.  Some duplicate footage here but I can trim this out at some point when I get a chance to go through here.
Documents - Just copied these across.
Photos - used an app called iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download for free but have to pay to use the part that consolidates your libraries.  Possibly if I was willing to spend a bit more time I could have got away without using this but given I didn't know the state of my different libraries and just how many duplicates I had this was too much of a convenience to ignore.  Also got my library into a state where I can now spend a few hours organising it a bit better with Faces / Events etc.
Not attempted Music or iPhone sync yet as been stuck trying to solve a problem with my power adapter.

  • Lost Mail on Network User Accounts

This problem has happened several times and I am pretty sure it relates to using Network User accounts. We're running Tiger server and all user accounts are stored on the server. We are using POP mail that is hosted externally.
A user logs in to his account. There are unread messages and the user starts to read them and reply to email. An hour or two goes by and when the user tries to read an unread email, the email disappears in the list when clicked, along with all the emails that had been received or sent since the last time he had logged into his user account.
There is no trace of the lost mail in the library on the server. If this isn't weird enough, the incoming mail on the ISP host account when accessed by webmail, is either gone or when you try to read it disappears when clicked along with all mail back to the same time that is missing on the user account stored on the server.
This has happened on different users and from different workstations. The only constant appears to be that these accounts are stored in network user accounts.
We are planning to bring mail in-house and switch to IMAP. But would like to know if anyone else has ever seen this.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Having the same problem here. I think its to do with the network home having a different database file from the local home and when the background sync happens the local home database is being replaced by the network home.
There is nowhere to set that during a background sync the local home should always be considered the newest and be pushed to the network. Sounds like it should be logical, but it doesn't seem to work like that.
I have users complaining that there machines are ok when they start, they have mail arrive during the day and then disappear and their mail box reverts back to the state it was when they logged in.
There is also the problem that when they move they don't always get the latest version of their mail box.

  • Mavericks - Additional User Accounts disappeared

    Hi all,
I got a rMBP (mid-2012) and recently updated to OS X Mavericks.
Before the upgrade I had setup a couple of accounts for sharing with the rest of the Macs in the house, namely for screen sharing and a dropbox folder (an actual folder inbetween Macs as opposed to the Dropbox web service)
These accounts have now disapperead from Settings --> User Accounts
However the services in the Activity Monitor are still running and the users that initiated them are the users I had setup before the upgrade.
How can I cease the services from running? How can I delete the accounts and set them up again if they do not show up in the User Accounts panel?

For whoever has the same issue, this article pointed me towards the right direction:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23549345#23549345
A simple disk verification with Disk Utility brought up some errors.
All I did was restart, with Command+R and repair disk.
Now both services and the user accounts have disappeared.

  • NetRestore Mavericks install with user account

So we have OS X Server 3 and mavericks
We have netrestore and netinstall images of 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 working great on our server
we can netboot into a NetRestore image and it will erase the drive and install a fresh copy of 10.8.5 with an Admin Account and we're ready to go
Having a tough time doing the same thing with Mavericks. only thing it wants to create is a Recovery netBoot image where it shows the same process as holding Command R down.
We'd like to create a netrestore image to have it where it will install a clean copy of Mavericks and user account.
as well as a netinstall image to upgrade users from 10.8 to 10.9 (we have netinstall images to upgrade users from 10.7 to 10.8 etc).
    any ideas?
    thanks!

So you have a working NetRestore image of 10.9.
Will it not allow you to create a NetInstall image of 10.9?
You should have three options. NetBoot, NetInstall, and NetRestore.
NetRestore will wipe the clients hard disk and restore the image, you should NOT use this to install mavericks! This is for restoring a pre-existing OS installation (as in an actual hard drive image)
NetInstall is the type of image you want to create, it can do clean or upgrade installs. It does upgrade by default, but you can wipe the hdd in disk utilty.
NetBoot will boot the image directly, it will have similar effect to NetInstall in this case.

  • 2 user accounts using 1 iCloud drive account, different folders and files for each user.

I have two user accounts on my Mac. One for work and one for personal use.
They both share my iCloud and iCloud drive account. My issue is that when I update the files in my work account the changes do not take place when I log into my personal account on my mac.. I find this strange seeing as I am only using one account for both.
This means when I am working and make folders or rename files and folders they only appear when I view iCloud Drive from that user profile. When I try to view iCloud drive from my personal user account or other iOS devices like my phone the old changes remain.
Has anyone any ideas why this is?

Because iCloud drive is not shared between users.  Each account has it's own storage.  It is NOT shared.

  • My mac freezes when trying to log in to my personal user

It started when I was surfing and it freezed all of a sudde  and when I rebooted I couldn't log into my personal user account nor guest for that matter. I've tried several things ever since but nothing has ben working. I've had my macbook pro for about 1,5 year and installed yosemite voluntarely when it just got out without any difficulties. This is the first time I'm having trouble with my mac.

    Hello user526627 and all,
I also have installed apex 2.2 successfully. At least I've not found any errors and this is the tail of install.log:
Thank you for installing Oracle Application Express.
Oracle Application Express is installed in the FLOWS_020200 schema.
The structure of the link to the Application Express administration services is as follows:

Interesting thing is that I am getting 404 when I use suggested http://host:port/pls/apex/apex_admin or http://host:port/pls/apex (I am using host name of the machine or ip address). However the http://host:port/pls/htmldb/ and http://host:port/pls/htmldb/apex_admin works (at least, I am getting a page without images). In addition, when I provide user name and password on the http://host:port/pls/htmldb/apex_admin page and click on 'Login' nothing happens... :(
This is a clean install. I've also used a HTMLDB 2.0 install from companion cd (Oracle10g R2 for Windows) - this had worked ok, however it did stop working when I istalled apex 2.2 on top of it. I've dropped flow-schemas and tablespaces I've created for apex 2.2 install and started the install over again. However, still no luck. Here is the command I am using to start apex 2.2 installation:
    @apexins ********** htmldb_data htmldb_files htmldb_temp /i/ none
I have installed oracle http server in a standalone home, the http server works.
    Thank you for your time,

  • Duplicate User Accounts on 1 Mac

My wife has an account on our iMac that she uses for personal and work. We want to DUPLICATE here user account information and delete the work email accounts from her personal user account and remove her personal email accounts from the newly duplicated work user account.
How can I do this? thanks

To duplicate all the stuff in her existing account, I would, as an admin user, first go into system preferences and create a new user account.
Next, from the admin account, I would launch Terminal.app and type
    sudo cp -vR /Users/{shortUserNameOfExistingAcc't}/* /Users/{shortUserNameOfNewAcc't}
substituting the appropriate actual short user names for the stuff in (and including) the curly brackets. This should duplicate all her existing stuff into the new account. You can get the short user names by doing
ls -l /Users. This may take a while to copy everything. Then do
    sudo ls -lR /Users/{shortUserNameOfNewAcc't}
just to make sure that the newly copied files have the same owner and group affiliations as the new account does -- they should but it's best to check.
Now, for mail accounts, you should have exact duplicates of everything in each user account, so you should be able to log into each computer account separately and remove the undesired mail account from within Mail's preferences. However, should you decide to retain the ability to check any mail account from either computer account, if any of the accounts are POP, just select "Leave messages on server" in Mail's preferences for the "foreign" mail account (i.e., personal mail on work account, or work mail on personal account).
This should work okay for you but as always, one should be cautious and make sure that everything has in fact been duplicated, everything can be opened, read, written, executed, in the new account before deleting the corresponding originals out of the old account.

  • Lost user account after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi there,
I've just upgraded from ML 10.8.5 to Mavericks 10.9 using the Mavericks install app downloaded in another computer and after restarting, I got the setup screen.
I restarted the computer in single user mode and notice that the user accounts are still in there so I created the .AppleSetupDone file manually. After restarting, I couldn't login using any of the accounts.
I restarted on the Recovery partition and tried to reset the users passwords, but the only user available was the root user. I created a password for the root so I can at least login on the system.
After loging in as root, I can't find my users in System Preferences and in their home folders, the only folder is the Library folder, all the other folders were deleted.
I work in a school and want to deploy Mavericks to all computers soon, but I don't want that teachers or students have the same problem.
Does anybody have a solution for it?
    Thanks,
    Luis

    I got the setup screen.
That shouldn't have happened. Either the directory database was corrupt to begin with, or something else went wrong with the installation. It's not a normal occurrence.

  • Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion deletes all user accounts

This is a lesson for upgrading too early (and too eagerly).
Today I tried the Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion on my 2007 Macbook Pro, after going through all the pre-installation/pre-upgrade checklists.
I don't think I have gone from a very high to a down low in such a short space of time.  I really wanted to move on from Mountain Lion and when the installer finished the upgrade to Mavericks and re-started my MBP, I was super excited.  When the restart completed and I was presented with the login prompt, I tried entering my user name and password.  First time, it shaked on the password... OK, you'd think that is a typo.  Re-entering the password... same thing.
You can imagine what ensued.  After entering my password v-e-r-y slowly many times, I started realising that something went very VERY wrong.
Just for information, I used two different user accounts on my MBP under Mountain Lion.  The one account had administrative priviledges and was only used for installing applications and a few other administrative tasks.  Then I have a second personal account, which does not have administrative priviledges and is the account I use daily for Mail, Safari, iTunes, programming etc.
None of those accounts worked under Mountain Lion.  Basically, there is no way in.
I then proceeded to boot with the startup option Cmd + S (command-line access).  Once that was completed, I was in as root and checked the /etc/passwd.  None of the user accounts were there.  I was only able to find two user accounts: root and nobody; and a long list of user account that started with an underscore (I think these are some sort of esoteric user accounts).  So, it appears that the Mavericks upgrade did not accurately bring over the user account information from my Mountail Lion installation.
Then, I went into the /Users directory and there I could see the home directories for all the users as they were defined under Mountain Lion.  The contents were intact too.
It seems to me that the Mavericks upgrade from my Mountain Lion forgot to bring over the user accounts but it did preserve the contents of all the users' home directories.
Unless anyone can spot some sort of user error here (please let me know), I am heading back to Mountain Lion pretty swiftly.  Otherwise, I suspect there is a bug in the Mavericks installer.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

The reason this occurred is a mystery and has not been commonly reported. Consider the following. It may or may not help. You should probably print these instructions before proceeding.
Boot Single User mode again and do the following:
(You can skip the first step. It will check your boot volume for errors and correct what it can. If there were errors the installer should not have proceeded, but the possibility exists that directory corruption may have occurred during installation. That seems unlikely to me but could explain what went wrong.)
    In Single User Mode:
At the :/ root# prompt, type fsck -fy and press Return or Enter. It will take a few moments to complete. If you are concerned that nothing is happening just press the Return key until you see the :/ root# prompt again.
Once the disk check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Return / Enter.
Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist and press Enter. If you get an error message you may ignore it.
Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are.
Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You will likely get an error message about a file or directory not being found. You may ignore this.
    Type reboot and press Enter.

  • Home folder lost - user account restored to default

I installed SL last weekend, no major problems but many annoying bugs. This morning when I woke up the computer had hung - screen saver was frozen. I held down the power key to shutdown. Turned the computer back on, clicked on my user account icon, and it was like I'd just picked up a new computer... my home folder had been replaced with a "straight out of the box" home folder. Standard desktop, standard dock, nothing in my documents folder, standard library. My entire home folder is gone.
All apps are still available - they are on a different partition with the OS.
The partition where my home folder lives is now virtually empty. I used stellar pheonix to try to recover the files from my home folder, but it did not find them as lost not as deleted files. It gave me the option of recovering about 40GB of deleted files, but they were legitimately deleted files.
I have repaired the disk - no problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

After Dubaidan and tcnsdca I am the third person in this thread who has experienced this 'wipe home directory' bug. I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard last week. By accident I clicked on the 'guest login' icon on my MBP thirty minutes ago. After about 1 minute it automatically returned to the login screen, without showing up the guest desktop, so I decided to click on the 'guest login' again. This went pretty smooth and when I logged out the message appeared that all the 'guest login data' wouldn't be saved, but returned to normal.
When logging in to my regular account everything was gone. I don't use filevault. Nothing has been renamed to something else. My home-directory still exists under /Users/username but it is just empty.
Apple should have noticed this bug report already. It doesn't feel right that Apple doesn't take immediate measures when someone reports such a bug with a high potential data loss.
I would suggest to everyone to disable the guest login option IMMEDIATELY until Apple has addressed this. I hope that Apple will come up with a swift response and a nice gesture to victims of this bug.

  • Cannot open Firefox 3.6.8 since installing toolbar from Inbox Dollars. Have 2 user accounts on my MacBook and it is fine on my business account, but will not open on my personal account, which is where I installed the toolbar.

AppleCare tried to help, but since Safari is working fine on both accounts, they said the problem was with Firefox on the personal account and they could not help me any further than what they already tried I do not want to lost it on my business account as well.

Try using Firefox's Safe Mode to disable the add-on.
First, make a backup of your computer for safekeeping. To back up Firefox, see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information].
    Next, start Firefox in Firefox
[http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode Safe Mode] and temporarily disable add-ons so you can uninstall the problem one.

  • Multiple User Accounts Belonging to the Same Person--Authorization

    Hello,
I've used iTunes for a number of years, and have accumulated a handful of Apple user accounts over that time period. I've always been able to de-authorize old computers and re-authorize new ones to be able to play all of the songs I've purchased over the years on whatever machine I'm using currently, but I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 and have only been able to get into one of my Apple accounts on it. Obviously I'm aware that it's not ideal for me to be one person with multiple accounts, but as my email accounts changed (and as I got older), I just kept re-registering. Now, iTunes seemingly isn't even registering that my two older accounts exist: my passwords, which I know are right, are no longer working to sign me in, much less to authorize this new computer to play the songs I bought probably 6 or 7 years ago.
I was wondering if there is anything I can do to get Apple to condense my accounts, especially considering that the original iTunes account I had was through AOL (the later two are through gmail accounts), though my end goal is really just to be able to play all of my music.
Any ideas on how to solve any of these issues would be greatly appreciated! At this point iTunes isn't even recognizing the older two accounts, as I said earlier.
    Thanks!
    Elise

You said it right there, in your post... Call Apple for support with combining the accounts. I have never heard of them doing that. But, if they can, you would need to contact them as they do not read these forums.

  • Is there a limit in the number of user accounts on Mavericks?

    Hi
I would like to create a system with a lot of user accounts (+/- 200).
    I have two questions:
    - Is there a limit in the user accounts on Mavericks? Where can I find more infomation about this?
    - Is there a possibility to automatically create a high number of accounts? Or at least some sort of template?
    Huge thanks for any help.

I don't think that there is a limit.
Are you using OS X Maverics Server?

In many organizations, a single shared directory domain is adequate. It can handle hundreds of thousands of users and thousands of computers sharing the same resources, such as printer queues, share points for home directories, share points for applications, and share points for documents.
