Spotlight Results Window Acting Graphically Glitchy

Since the 10.5.7 update, whenever I search with Spotlight the results window is really glitchy and jumpy graphically. After every word I enter during a search the results window is jerky, showing pieces of whatever is underneath. The only way I've been able to make it stop is by verifying the HD with disk utility, not even repairing it. I can't be 100% sure this actually did stop the problem but it has worked twice and this issue does not start and stop intermittently.
Also, when I search an external USB HD connected to Airport, Airport crashes. However I am able to search another internal HD on another computer being served by netatalk.

  • Spotlight results window too small

When I do a Spotlight search and then click on "Show All", it opens a small Finder window. Too small to read full file names. If I click on the green plus button in the upper left, it makes it taller, but not wider. So I have to drag the lower right corner to widen it, and then re-size the columns so I can see full file names.
If I close the window, the next time I open a Spotlight search, it defaults to the same too-small size.
    This happens every time.
Is there any way I can change this default and save the size and column spread I want?

I just created a new account and the result was the same: the "Show All" results window opens up very small and has to be manually re-sized.
Is there a system-wide preference file that can be changed for that, or am I stuck with it?

  • Finder jumps in Spotlight results window

When searching the files in the Spotlight search results window, the finder constantly jumps back to the first file in the list, or to the last selected file in the list, when scrolling. Any advice or recommendations is appreciated.

Spotlight search results window columns "Name", "Kind", "Last Opened" are sometimes "frozen" and cannot be clicked. Sometimes can be clicked.

    HI,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.spotlight.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Spotlight Find Window has incorrect arrangement

Lately, whenever I use Spotlight and then choose "Show All", the resulting window is displayed (in list view) with a very wide sidebar, and very narrow columns which must be expanded to read the fields. Normal new Finder windows open correctly, in column view, with the sidebar and columns all readable without adjustment. Under View Options, with the Search window as the foremost window, the checkbox "Always Open in List View" is not checked, however the window always opens in List View.
This problem with the Spotlight Find window has only occurred recently and no attempt to fix it has been successful. How and where do I specify the format of the Spotlight window so that I may specify it as it used to be?

If the problem doesn't exist in other accounts, then there's further corruption within the original one. While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Spotlight preview window often doesn't close

OSX10.5. Spotlight. preview window in the spotlight search results column opens normally, but sometimes doesn't close. just sits there on top of all desktop items. So far the only way to get rid of it is to restart which is  a pain. Any thoughts?

I am having the same problem: iTunes hangs when I try to quit. I haven't noticed it hanging at any other time, just when I try to quit. However, it also takes an extremely long time (one to three minutes) to start up and will sometimes quit in the middle of starting up. I am wondering if I have corrupted song files or something in my library? Or a corrupted plist file? Anybody have any ideas?
I did just transfer this library from a G4 Mac running iLife '06 to the new MacBook Pro running iLife '09. Is there some incompatible file that didn't get updated, perhaps?

  • Incomplete Spotlight results

    Hi,
I recently unistalled an application for my computer called Evernote. When I had removed the .app-file, I wanted to remove a Evernote folder I knew was located in the Library folder. I searched for it with spotlight, and with the search feature in the Finder window (also called Spotlight?), but neither of the searches found the folder I was looking for. I started looking for the it "manually", I found it right away. The folder was called "Evernote", just as I had searched for. I don't have any exceptions set up in the preferences for Spotlight, and it is also set up to search for folders and everything else with a matching name. Does anyone know what I should do? By the way: I have the same problem with Time Machine. I search for a folder I've lost, but I can't find it by searching for it. I have to "manually" go back in time and get it myself.
    Thank you for your help.

Personally, I've not found Spotlight very helpful, so I use a different method to search for anything:
In Finder, hit Command + F on keyboard. In the resulting window, change "Kind" drop down menu to "System Files" and the "Any/aren't included" to "are included". Now type in your search phrase - you should be able to see all the files.

  • Spotlight results locations

Hello, I was looking for a mail message that I was sure was still in my inbox by typing in a word from it in Spotlight. The message appeared in the results, but I don't know where it is located within. I saw a topic in here about Control- or Command- clicking on the result and then selecting Open Enclosing Folder but the only thing that happens when I do that is the message shows in my Desktop and there is no option to select anything. Can someone help me find where this message is? Thanks!

Ok, I clicked on the message in the Spotlight results then when I clicked on Show in Mailbox, though, it just brought the Mail window to the front. Hmm, maybe it isn't in the Mail library, I thought. But when I followed sig's instructions the message I was looking for happened to be the fifth one down (sorry, I just migrated over from a PC and just now figured out what 'home' is). I previewed each of the messages using Quick Look, but would rather something tell me that this message was 3893.emlx right off. I then wanted to put the message back in my Inbox so I dragged it over to POP-username/INBOX.mbox/Messages, but it doesn't show up in the Mail window Inbox. Hmm... Should I not be able to 'restore' the message to my Inbox? Am I doing something wrong?
Also, I looked for Show Paths in both Mail and Finder helps but no luck. Where is that?
Well, the message definitely exists on my drive, but it doesn't want to behave like a mail message anymore. : ( Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

  • Spotlight results appearing in icon mode

For some reason my spotlight results appear in icon mode instead of list mode. This happens only when I type in an existing finder window. If is bring up a spotlight search window with command-option-space, the results are in list mode.
This started happening soon after 10.6 upgrade.
It happens in other logins as well

    Welcome to our community, gillt40
If there were a single issue that seems to have plagued
Captivate, you have hit it. E-Mail reporting is so far from
reliable it isn't funny. The unfortunate part is that there are no
answers. There is no magick solution for it. No setting you can
tweak or forgot to turn on. It's all hit or miss. And judging from
the posts I see here day after day after day that report the same
    thing, it's mostly miss.
The fact of the matter is that the only really reliable
reporting you will find is if you use a Learning Management System
(LMS) as that was how Captivate was designed to work best.
Sorry, but all I can do is tell the truth. Then stand back.

  • Is it possible to select multiple files on the W8.1U1's SEARCH RESULTS window page? For instance, if 10 CPP files are found by the seraching mechanism, can I select all 10 files and have them open in Visual Studio at once?

    TIA.

Brandon, this forum member is known since a long time ago an arrogant (he thinks he knows more than every other) and stupid(*) (full of misconceptions). His first post is a very good example of what I just wrote. How does he dare to suggest to use File
Explorer, if W8.1 already has a system built for doing just this search?  Do I have to open File Explorer in the folder (or somewhere near) the item I'm looking for? What about the other items in folders above it? This suggestion is stupid(*). He even
asserts that I'm using Modern UI! I'm not! I'm using the desktop, but his misconceptions make him write such idiocies(*) with such arrogance: asserting what he doesn't know (arrogancy and stupidity). And more, this guy is no one to say he/he/he to me, because
I know he is what you deleted from my posts, and more, he is often crying, moaning and snivelling like a spoiled child in this forum and messing up any thread posting stupid(*) images of programs imagined/designed/developed by others. All posts from him in
this thread must be trashed (you should do it). He has nothing to contribute POSITIVELY in this thread, but just to MESS IT UP.
(*) stupid, I can write, after all, you didn't delete this word from this ... poster.
Now, look at the first reply: this forum member has no idea how much stupid is his 'work around'. And this 'work around' does not answer my question and even does address the environment I mentioned: W8.1 U1 search results window page, and not File Explorer!
His second post just reassures me he has no idea what is the searching mechanism I'm talking about. He even mentions Win-w(!) which proves he totally ignore what is the searching mechanism I'm talking about. A user like this one, must have many monitors to
keep him busy looking at them, and having excuses for not read and learn technical documentation. It's ignorance about technical aspects of computer issues that makes him post bad bug report and a bad idea in Connect site:
Using Get-Date -Format "CyM" to work around some bugs
    https://connect.microsoft.com/PowerShell/feedback/details/884502/using-get-date-format-cym-to-work-around-some-bugs
Only total ignorance about PowerShell makes someone post such bad 'bug' report. He got critics about his bad post, but I'm sure he doesn't understand.
Column headers for alias should include DisplayName instead of just Name
    https://connect.microsoft.com/PowerShell/feedback/details/908152/column-headers-for-alias-should-include-displayname-instead-of-just-name
In fact, the information displayed is already DisplayName, but this guy has no technical knowledge to understand what is happening.
These 2 forum members just messed up a thread that should be free of negative contributions, besides off topic.

  • I have used Image Capture to scan images/documents and then saved them as either PDFs or PNG files.  For some reason, just this past week Image Capture will no longer save the file.  It scans, and the Scan Results window pops up, but it won't save file.

I have used Image Capture to scan images/documents and then saved them as either PDFs or PNG files.  For some reason, just this past week, Image Capture will no longer save the file.  It scans, and the Scan Results window pops up, but it won't save file.
The file name has no special character in it, just letters and no spaces.
I have done this in the past and it has worked, but now it will not.
I have not upgraded any software, that I am aware of.
After scanning, the Image Capture pops up the Scan Results with the file name in the window, but neither the Scan Results nor the Image Capture window responds to inputs.  The Image Capture window is frozen, with only the "Overview" and "Cancel" buttons active (but non-responsive).
Is this a software issue or a scanner hardware issue?  I am using a HP Photosmart C6200 series printer/scanner on a network using a Time Capsule airport.
    Thanks.

    I had the same problem.
Got a 90% fix.  Apparently the Mavericks preferences won't work with Yosemite, so I just deleted the Image Capture preferences.
Unfortunately, the "Scan to" folder seems to be permanently set to the Pictures folder.
    1.  Quit Image Capture
    2.  Go to Finder > Go > Home, which opens up your home folder (named after your user name)
    3.  Open Library > Preferences > com.apple.ImageCapture.plist - Drag this file to the Trash
    4.  Start "Image Capture", click "Details" and change all your settings as you prefer
    5.  Quit and restart "Image Capture".   Notice it remembers all your settings except "Scan to" folder.  It insists on saving to "Pictures".
That's as far as I was successful.  I tried changing the "Scan to" folder to "Desktop", but on launch, Image Capture always sets it back to "Pictures".
    This is what I tried:
    6.  Download and install "Pref Setter" from http://www.nightproductions.net/prefsetter.html
    7.  Quit "Image Capture".  Right-click on "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist" and open with Pref Setter.
    8.  Search for "Pictures", which finds "~/Pictures" (the tilde character at the start means your home directory).
    9.  Double-click on "~/Pictures" and change it to the folder you prefer.  I like "~/Desktop"
    10. Choose File > Save then Quit from Pref Setter.  Note that re-opening the plist file still shows "~/Desktop"
    11. Start up "Image Capture" -- on startup, "Image Capture" sets "Scan to" folder to "Pictures"
    I consider this a bug.

  • Gnome-Do result window doesn't appear

Hi, I've just finished my first Arch installation and there's one last hiccup that's bugging me.
Whenever I have Metacity composite turned on, the result window in Gnome Do doesn't show up when I press the down arrow, as it should. Even if I mark "Always show results window", the first time I open Do, the results window show up, but from the second on, no luck.
If I disable composite everything works fine, but it's not because of the classic theme, as I've tried using it with composite on, but the same thing happens. Anyone got this behavior or knows how to fix it?
    Thanks.

I had Compiz installed and tried it a little bit, but it wasn't working right (no window borders for some reason), and since I had no need for it besides making Gnome Do look better, seemed a bit like overkill so I uninstalled it. I never noticed this bug while I was trying it on... I'll try reinstalling it and making it work right and post back my results.
    Thanks
    [Edit]
Using Compiz solved the problem, but the OS got a bit slower, even when I disabled pretty much everything I could... nothing unbearable, but noticeable. Besides, the Emerald themes aren't very nice...

  • Show properties in the Search Result window

    Hello all,
I would like to add few properties in the Search Result window such that the corresponding values are visible at a glance rather than checking the same in the respective Details wondow.
Example: Ia have created new Properties like ReqNo, ReqDate... and would like them to appear in the Search Result window.
    Please help me solve this.
Im also reading the UI topic given in help.sap.com but am unable to find the answer.
    Awaiting Reply.
    Thanks and Warm Regards,
    Ritu

    Hi Ritu,
Go to KM Config > Content Management > User Interface > Settings > Layout Set and put "Search" in the filter.   You should see "SearchResultLayoutSet" and this is the Layout Set that is used to display Search Results.   Within the Collection Renderer there is Displayed Properties, this is what you need to focus on.
There are some other threads and documents associated with your question here on SDN.   If you do a search for "SearchResultLayoutSet" in the SDN search you should get enough information to achieve your objective.
Sorry for the brief reply but I have one foot out the door heading for the airport and won't be back online for another couple of days.
Let me know how you go
