Spotlight (still) not working in System Preferences

Hi there,
As soon as I enter a single letter in the search box of the System Preferences window, the entire System Preferences window dims, and no Preference Pane icon is highlighted.
I've tried:
1) Running Disk Utility and reparing disk -- no repairs required
2) Running Disk Utility and repairing permissions -- no repairs required
3) Booting into Single User Mode (Command-S at boot), and running AppleJack 1.4.3 and removing all caches and checking all plist files for corruption
4) Deleting the Spotlight index: sudo mdutil -E / and re-indexing
5) manually deleting just ~/Library/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache and
~/Library/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
Except for the search field in the System Prefernences window not working, Spotlight seems fine.
Any other suggestions appreciated.

Thank you Daniel,
I omitted posting that the Search box in my Systems Preferences Window used to work, so that I do know what to look for: as I type letters the preference panes whose description contains the (partial) word I am typing should be highlighted by an undimmed circle.
Unfortunately, in my case, the behavior I have is that regardless of what I type in the Search box in my Systems Prefernces Window, no icons are ever highlighted. Indeed, I can type the complete name of a preference pane, for example 'bluetooth', and while my entire Systems Preferences Window is dimmed, neither my Bluetooth preference pane icon nor any other preference pane icon is highlighted through the use of an undimmed circle about it.
This failure of the Search box in the Systems Preferences Window has been experienced by other people. For example in this forum, viz:
Reindexed my HD but no Spotlight preference in Preferences
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=876847
Unfortunately the solution posted in the above thread was to manually delete the ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache and ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache files. And as I posted I've tried not only manually deleting the above two files in terminal.app, but also deleting all of my cache files through the use AppleJack 1.4.3. Neither steps have returned the Search box in my Systems Preferences Window to working order.
Alas, I'm still looking for suggestions...

  • Spotlight still not working in inDesign

Why is it that after nearly TWO years the spotlight function in the open dialogue box is still not working in inDesign? Is this some sort of sick joke from the inDesign programmers? Why can it work when in the PASTE dialogue box but not the OPEN dialogue box? I discovered this fault years ago and wrote about it in length but it has yet to be addressed.

    Thank you Daniel,

  • Some Tabs Not Working in System Preferences

Mac Pro E2008 14Gb/2Tb.  Installed Mavericks over OS X 10.8.4 with no problems.  Was having some problems with selected fonts not showing up in Pages 5.0.  Ran some font diagnostic software, which isolated some problem fonts.  Subsequent to this I noticed that some Tabs do not work in some preference panes.  In particualr, tha advanced tab in Security and Privacy does not work and the advanced tab does not work in Network Preference pane.  Neither does the + tab in that pane but the - does.  Also cannot edit the three locations that I have in my system.
Found that all is restored when logged into the root account and also into a Maintainence admin account.  I also ascertained that in my faulty account, after taking out the login items plist and starting with no login items, the fault was still there.  Similarly booting into safe mode did not restore the faulty tabs.  I ran font book and deleted all questionable fonts and moved all the user fonts to the /library/fonts folder.  After each action I restarted rather than logging out.  I have tried deleting the systemuiserver.plist and removing the relevant network plists from the user/library/preferences folder.  I have also removed the com.appl.network.eapoiclient.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist.  I have also made invisible files visible and gone through the whole system folder/library folder and ~/library folder and deleted old preferences and obsolete files back to 2004 with the result that my system now loads very much quicker, which is an obvious bonus.  However, the problem still remains and is obviously something to do with the main user account.  If I go into root or my maintainence account, I can change or edit some settings which "stick" when I log back into my main account.  I have carried out the mail and iBook update in the mean time which has not changed anything.
I have also ran diskwarrior and corrected the disk directory, repaired permissions, reset ACL's and emptied various caches using tinker tool system and mavericks cache cleaner.  I have I think very thoroughly inspected the library and ~/Library folders.
So, synopsis  (1) Definitely the main account.  (2) No logins or safeboot are not the culprits.
Whilst not earth shattering and hopefully 10.9.1 may solve the problem, I would be very grateful if anyone could add any further possible problem areas to look at or suggest possible further solutions.

Hey there, sounds like you've done a lot of the groundwork already although it's not entirely clear what about the preference panes aren't working. There is further isolation that could be performed however if the issue is isolated to your user account as you mentioned then renaming the home folder library preferences, logging out and back in (preventing login items if any) and testing may give you the results you are looking for. If that works I would copy the files from the renamed Preferences folder *not replacing* existing files when prompted (of course if it doesn't work replace the existing Preferences folder with the original renamed Preferences entirely). The same type of troubleshooting also applies to the user library itself however please be careful about launching apps after renaming the ~/library or the contained prefs folder and before copying unaffected plists and/or supporting files back as unexpected results may follow (i.e. lost or missing data). Also if you are eligible for support (which you almost certainly are as you have very recently installed a new OS) I'm sure Applecare may help find a solution.

  • Spotlight Still not Working...Please Help!

Originally my Spotlight was not working at all. No Search capability whatsoever. I had a Red X in the Top Right of the screen where the Spotlight icon was supposed to be. Spotlight also did not show up in System Prefs.
I did an Archive and Reinstall of 10.4.3, and followed up with the 10.4.4 combo update. Now the Spotlight Icon appears correctly, as does it apear under system prefs, but I still have no search capability at all. Just spins and never comes up with any results.
I really don't want to have to erase and reinstall everything from scratch. What else can I do?

I fixed it. I downloaded Spotless then disabled, then re-enabled Spotlight; restarted, and it's working.

  • Search not working in system preferences

The search field in system preferences has stopped working on mt G5 Dual.
No matter what I search, including simple terms like 'date' or 'network' - nothing gets highlighted.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Hi, Kenny.
    This should sort it out:
    1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder.
    3. Trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    - com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
    4. Empty the Trash.
    5. Launch System Preferences and see if Spotlight search of System Preferences works as expected.

  • Some controls not working in System Preferences

Today I downloaded a beta application that was blocked from installation because it came from an unidentified developer (Mail Pilot Beta 3, fwiw)
I opeend the Security & Privacy preference pane, selected teh general tab, and clicked on Open Anyway next to the message about the app being blocked. The message and button disappeared as expected, but the pop up about the app being blocked because it came from an unidentified developer reappeared immediately.
I decided to loosen the restrictions around apps from unidentified developers. Unlocked the preference pane and clicked the Anywhere radio button under "Allow Apps downloaded from:". The radio button would not stay selected. I also clicked the Adbaced button (which was enabled) but got no response.
I have not tested every control in every preference pane, but a qucik check showed a couple of others also not functioning: the Advanced button on the Network pref pane, and the Time Machine Options button on that pref pane.
Permissions repair is clean. I also verified the disk structure on my boot drive and it is fine.  Checked persmissions on the pre panes as well at the app that was blocked, everything looks right.
I just checked my wife's maching and found the same behavior.

When I unplug Apple headphones from my MacBook Pro sond from internal speakers not work, and system soud preferences displayed: Output: optical digital out port only

If you see a red light in the audio output port, then the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone plug a few times and see if you can trip the switch.  If that fails, insert a cocktail stirrer and the like and jiggle it around inside.  If that fails, take it to an Apple store and have the technicians at the genius bar do it for you.

  • Spotlight search not working on external hard drive

    Hi all,
The spotlight search doesn't seem to be working on my external hard drive.
It is also not working as part of Time Machine, I cannot retreive anything via the spotlight search that has been backed on on the external drive.
I know I have the files on there but it's not picking it up like it used to.
    Any ideas???

    Solution:
    1. System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy
    2. Drag and drop or add your external hard drive in the Privacy window. This will reset the old preference.
    3. Then remove the external hard and close the System Preferences.
    4. Wait for 30 seconds. Spotlight will start indexing of your external hard drive.
Update: It's supposed to scan for 8 hours but it took only 15 minutes and stopped. I tested the search and it's still not working. It's strange that it works on my other two external hard drives (USB and Firewire) but not this particular one (USB). I have three external hard drives.

  • Spotlight is not working on brand new Mac mini

    Hi,
I got an issue with two brand new Mac minis running 10.7.3 (11D50d):
Spotlight is not working. I'm only getting the Wikipedia-Search.
    Here's what I did:
    Installation:
    - took the stock Minis and set up two users, admin and user (limited account)
    - updatet the System
    - installed manually: Adobe Reader X, Office 2011, Firefox 12, Flip4Mac, Perian, Cyberduck, Google Earth 6.2 (the installer without the updater), VLC 2
    - installed using AppStore: CalendarBar, TextWrangler, Unarchiever
    - copied a few documents (Word and Excel files) from a PC to the Desktop
    Troubleshooting:
    - tried to restart Spotlight by adding the entire harddrive to privacy using »Spotlight« within the System Preferences
    - that threw an error "no priviliges"
    - started the System from the recovery system (on an USB-thumbdrive) and repaired permissions
    - that did not help
    - tried to restart Spotlight through the Terminal, running the command: sudo mdutil -E /
    - that command returned: No index.
    - the tried: sudo mdutil -i on /
    - returned: Error: unable to perform operation.  (-400) No index.
    - went the hard way
    - unloaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    - erased the Spotlight folder: sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100/
    - loaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
That made everything work fine until I did a restart of the System. After the mini restarted I was back at square one...
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
Apple support suggested to reinstall the system. Something I can't do right now, as people need to work on those computers and cannot take a tow hour break...

    Hi Ray Land,
We can help narrow down the cause.  What operating system are you using on your new Mac Mini?
If you are running the Mountain Lion OS, you can download the latest driver here.  An important note is that the current print queue must be deleted before installing the new driver.  This will ensure proper communication.
If this doesn't work or you need further assistance, please contact us here.

  • Mail+Spotlight Search Not Working in Lion

I've been dealing with this problem for over a month and have not been able to fix it.  Search works fine in Lion on several computers, but on my laptop it still won't do a complete search.  It will only pull up emails from people in my contacts list..... no subject key word searches or people outside my contacts searches..... very frustrating! The searches also don't work in Spotlight, so I can't use spotlight as a backup.
I've tried rebuilding my mailbox.... deleting and recreating the account.... tossing out the Envelope Index folders in the Mail library... Deleting and re installing my search window, etc...... I see lot's of other people with the same issue. It's frustrating when your running your business on your computer and have to deal with a flaw in a new OS..... it was working fine in Leopard..... whats up APPLE?  Please help!
    Other Info:
Macbook Pro 2008 Version with 2.5 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Running 10.7.4

    Glenn,
Regarding adding and deleting the System Drive from the Spotlight Privacy Tab...... I'm following your sequence, but when I come back to Spotlight Search in the menu bar it just works the same.... no mention of indexing. What's interesting is that "Mail" dosn't appear anywhere in search results when a keyword search is performed via spotlight.
Regarding the "enevelope Index Files" ..... I followed the instructions and quit and re-opened mail as instructed.  When I re-opened Mail I selected "continue" and the program began to index the contents of mail for about 30 minutes.  I thought that would would fix the issue, but it's still not working.
I've tried to compare the account setup from my IMAC which works fine to see if I have something setup wrong in the account, but everything looks the same.
I guess I can try to re-index again?  Don't know what else to do?
    Thanks,
    Bill

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

"Avast" is the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. Not only does it fail to protect you from any real danger, it may send personal data (such as web browsing history and the contents of email messages) back to the developer without your knowledge, give false warnings, destabilize and slow down the computer, expose you to network attack, and corrupt the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage.
Some versions of the product also inject advertising into web pages. In short, apart from the fine print in the license agreement, Avast is indistinguishable from malware, and is arguably worse than any known malware now in circulation.
Back up all data, then remove Avast according to the developer's instructions. Restart.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and then follow the instructions linked above.

  • Print & Scan not responding in System Preferences; cannot print from any application

I have a MBP running 10.7.5 and all of a sudden any app I use to print (via network printers), freezes the app and does not print. From System Preferences, I cannot access Print & Scan - it does not respond. All other settings in System Preferences seem to work just fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

To add to my original post: I created an alternative administrator user account and logged in with it to see if the same problem occurred. The problem does not appear in the new admin account - the Print & Scan works in System Preferences. I printed a couple items with no problem. So this is something tied to my user account. But I still don't know what to do to fix it. I came across the following suggestion online for a similar problem. Would appreciate if someone could confirm if this is what I should do. I am novice when it comes to these types of problems and have never used Terminal to do anything? Here is info: open Terminal to fully shut down the printing system with the command sudo luanchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.cups.cupsd.plist and then open System Preferences to load Print& Scan which should now load without hanging. Then right click on the empty printer list and choose the option to reset the printing system and then restart computer so launcher automatically reloads the cups property list file and then return to System Preferences and set up my printer.
    Thanks!
