Spry Menu... display a submenu onload or with inline javascript

Hi,
I've got a submenu I'd like to have displayed "permanently" while the user is on the page.
Can I id that submenu's parent menu item and then run a function on it using document.GetElementByID("activemenu").somefunction?
I thought that focus() would do it, but that only triggers the parent menu item's hover state (color change). click() does nothing.
I need to figure out the function that requests and shows the submenu. Or is a two-part process?
Thanks in advance
A

On the page that you want the submenu to be open, just add the class name as follows

• Spry menu displays as bullets [was; NEED HELP PLEASE]

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this:
when ever I create the spry menu bar in Dreamweaver it sets it as bullets, it isnt noticeable in dreamweaver or when I test it in safari,firefox, etc.. but as soon as I upload it to the ftp host it distorts the site because it shows the menu bar in bullets???
*The picture attached is screen shot of just the menu bar(it should be only 1 line)

Make sure you have linked and uploaded the Spry Assets that come with the Menubar. As you can see, the Menubar is a simple list that takes its functionality from its associated JavaScript and CSS files.
The CSS and Javascript files need to travel with the page with the Widget on it.

• Horizontal Spry Menu displays incorrectly in Explorer

I looked in other discussions to find an answer to this, but I can't find the right answer.
My issue is that my Horizontal Spry Menu Bar, which displays correctly in Firefox and Chrome, displays vertically and on the left side of the page in Explorer.
I had a heck of a time getting the Menu Bar to work at all, so I'm sure there are issues in the coding, but don't know what they are.
Any help is appreciated.

• Spry Menu display problems in IE

Hi!
I'm making a menu for a website and i tried Spry. version 1.4
returned me some trouble with IE, but none with FireFox.
i then updated to version 1.6, expecting some changes, but
nothing has happened.
I'm using the following: SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css - version
0.6 - Spry Pre-Release 1.6
here's the address for you to see what's happening and
possibly help me:
page
I'd like to thank you in advance and say i'm here for any
other information you need.

Hi ssorizo,
Try removing those
tags inside the
level one
tags.
They are not needed.
Also, I noticed that you have modified slightly the CSS file,
please use a fresh version and modify only what you strictly need
(fonts, colors etc), not the various widths measured in em.

• Need to get a spry menu to work on every page with Server Side Includes

I've created such a menu and have pasted the code into its own PHP file and then added the include but it just comes out as a blob of code and links. Any tips on how to do this? Thanks.

The following code was entered into a php file called topNav.php which was made reference to by another fiel. the result looks like this:

Home

Resources

About Our Company

Announcements

FAQs

• I was working on my spry menu bar and now my sidebar1 photo moves with the menu bar?

I was working on my spry menu bar, and getting really far with it thanks to GRAMPS, and all of a sudden I wanted to put padding of 30px top and 30 px bottom on the sidebar1 photo in the container and now all of a sudden the home.jpg photo in the sidebar moves when you hover over the menu bar.
I can noit for the life of me figure out what changed and somehow was so excited about my spry menu bar working that I did not save the most recent working page. Can anybody look at this with me and let me know what changed to mess the page up on me.
Thanks a million.
Ted
site is located here http://www.subzerorefrigeration.com
None of the links are working I have just been playing with the spy menu for weeks. I finally figured it out and do not belive the error is in the spry style sheets.
Here is the code for my page. I know I am working with a template. I really do not want to start over if a
tag is missing.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

/* ~~ These are the columns for the layout. ~~
1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the divs. The elements within these divs have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.
2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward (for example: a right margin on a div set to float right). Many times, padding can be used instead. For divs where this rule must be broken, you should add a "display:inline" declaration to the div's rule to tame a bug where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.
3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar divs could be stacked if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.
4) If you prefer your nav on the right instead of the left, simply float these columns the opposite direction (all right instead of all left) and they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the divs around in the HTML source.

Instructions

Be aware that the CSS for these layouts is heavily commented. If you do most of your work in Design view, have a peek at the code to get tips on working with the CSS for the fixed layouts. You can remove these comments before you launch your site. To learn more about the techniques used in these CSS Layouts, read this article at Adobe's Developer Center - http://www.adobe.com/go/adc_css_layouts.

Clearing Method

Because all the columns are floated, this layout uses a clear:both declaration in the .footer rule. This clearing technique forces the .container to understand where the columns end in order to show any borders or background colors you place on the .container. If your design requires you to remove the .footer from the .container, you'll need to use a different clearing method. The most reliable will be to add a <br class="clearfloat" /> or <div class="clearfloat"></div> after your final floated column (but before the .container closes). This will have the same clearing effect.

Logo Replacement

An image placeholder was used in this layout in the .header where you'll likely want to place a logo. It is recommended that you remove the placeholder and replace it with your own linked logo.

Be aware that if you use the Property inspector to navigate to your logo image using the SRC field (instead of removing and replacing the placeholder), you should remove the inline background and display properties. These inline styles are only used to make the logo placeholder show up in browsers for demonstration purposes.

To remove the inline styles, make sure your CSS Styles panel is set to Current. Select the image, and in the Properties pane of the CSS Styles panel, right click and delete the display and background properties. (Of course, you can always go directly into the code and delete the inline styles from the image or placeholder there.)

Backgrounds

By nature, the background color on any div will only show for the length of the content. This means if you're using a background color or border to create the look of a side column, it won't extend all the way to the footer but will stop when the content ends. If the .content div will always contain more content, you can place a border on the .content div to divide it from the column.

• IE problems with vertical spry menu bar

hi,
first of all: I'm aware that this problem has been discussed
before. but nothing I've found so far has really helped me.
the problem is that my vertical spry menu bar doesn't work
properly with the internet explorer. I've (clumsily) repositioned
the submenu bars, but that didn't seem to be the main problem.
I'm using dreamweaver cs3 on a mac and have checked for
safari and firefox, in which everything works fine. I'd be very
grateful if someone could have a look at
www.philipbirau.com/portfolio.htm.
unfortunatly, I have neither the skills nor the money for
'professional' webdesign, so any hint will be appreciated. if you
need more information, please let me know.
thanks!

• Spacing of Spry Menu submenu items, and inserting background images

Hiya, need a bit of help, could someone possibly guide me with this?
I've created a Spry Menu in DW CS5 - so far, so good.. However I'm pretty new to CSS Styles so need pointers at what to change to get the result I need. I've created the spry menu, however the submenu dropdown items are not flush to the ones above, theres a 1px horz gap between each item and while it looks okay, its particularly visible in Firefox and Chrome and would prefer no spacing at all..
The live site is at http://www.ebm.co.uk/2011site/indexnavbar2.html
if you take a look at the drop down menu bar you'll see what i mean - what do I need to do to remove the spacing?
I also want to replace the solid colour with images, where do I specify the images for 1) top menu item 2) submenu item and 3) 'hover' item, and do I need to make any areas transparent?
Any advice would be much appreciated.. thanks!

• Help with Spry Menu Bar 2.0 (vers. 1.0) - Placement of customized styles files

Hello:
I would like to congratulate the authors of the new Spry Menu Bar Framework 2.0 (vers. 1.0) -- it has truly been an advance and over the previous generation, and is much more user friendly for those without extensive knowledge of the spry framework. I have also appreciated the tutorial created by David Powers that is found on the Adobe labs site, and find that it has been very helpful.
However, I do have one general question that I would seek some clarification before completing the task of deploying the widget in its final form. I have gone beyond the tutorial insofar as I have customized the styling to allow me to use background images for the menus and submenus in both static and hover states. I have also gone directly (with add of the tutorial) to work on my own site rather than recreating the bayside tutorial. I know have my styles embedding into a template page (.dwt).
My question is whether those styles embedded in the head of the template page should be transferred to a separate styles page and attached (or possibly included in the styles page that handles the CSS for the layout aspects of my site), or whether it should overwrite the styles included in the basic styles skin for the widget. The latter seems the most likely answer, as many of the classes are for the same names as those in my template page, but have different (and conflicting settings). However I wanted to make certain of this before proceeding.
Once again let me thank those responding to this query in advance for the helpful tips I have received along the way, and that will likely follow this post.
I could post the css and the html with this querry, but I hope I have explained the question well enough that a general response will be all that I need.
Thanks again for the help.
Steve Webster

Thanks for your helpful response.
I had already tried the various options (overwriting basic styles, skins, etc) and quickly learned to back track as they were definitely not the answer to the question I posed. I then included them in the customized style sheet for the entire site and clearly de-marked them as styles governing the spry menu widget 2.0 (1.0) with the warning that future developers working on the site should use care in amending them, and warning that they be remain included in the general styles file.
I was going to indicate in response to my own query that this seemed to be the best practice, but your response confirmed what I had learned.
Thanks once again for your helpful advice and intervention.
Steve Webster.

• Spry Menu Bar wraps to second line on a few monitors

Hello-
I am stuck on a spry horizontal menu bar and have discussed with a few local dreamweaver users and we can't figure this out. I'm using CS4 to create an internal site for my company (sorry, I can't send you link). I tested the site on firefox and explorer on my computer and everything works beautifully. When going through the soft launch one computer out of the six computers who reviewed the site had an issue with my navigation bar. I used the horizontal spry menu bar to create a navigation with six options. The problem computer wrapped the last two to a second line which makes everything weird on pages within the site.
Screen captures are below. Three images show the main page where the navigation wraps on top of the side column and right column. The second image shows the menu bar wrapping behind the left column on additional site pages which is happening on all additional site pages.
The code for the spry menu assets should be below the images. If you need additional information, if I didn't provide everything, I'll send it. I'm very new to this and pretty much self-taught. I have taken an online class through ed2go.com, I've asked a ton of questions from other designers using Dreamweaver, and I've watched MANY tutorials online. ANY help you can give would be MUCH appreciated. THANK YOU!!

Hi, Mel,
I see that you are using default widths for the list items in the menus. If you reduce the width of the list items, you should be able to settle on a width that works better than 8em and 8.2em.
Here are the bits that will need editing:
ul.MenuBarHorizontal li
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
list-style-type: none;
font-size: 100%;
position: relative;
text-align: left;
cursor: pointer;
width: 8em; /* make this width smaller */
float: left;
/* Submenus should appear below their parent (top: 0) with a higher z-index, but they are initially off the left side of the screen (-1000em) */
ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
list-style-type: none;
font-size: 100%;
z-index: 1020;
cursor: default;
width: 8.2em; /* make this width smaller */
position: absolute;
left: -1000em;
background-image: url(/Images/Autry_Background.jpg);
/* Submenu that is showing with class designation MenuBarSubmenuVisible, we set left to auto so it comes onto the screen below its parent menu item */
ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul.MenuBarSubmenuVisible
left: auto;
/* Menu item containers are same fixed width as parent */
ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul li
width: 8.2em; /* make this width smaller */

• Spry Menu Issues - Not functioning correctly in Microsoft IE

Hi there,
I am fairly new to web design and dreamweaver.
I have constructed a simple page that I am happy with complete with Spry Menu which again I am happy with. However this spry menu works perfectly in firefox but for some reason on IE my spry menu does not function correctly and goes all over my page!

** I am also using Windows 8 and Dreamweaver CS6 If this helps.**
Any help with this would be fantastic as I need this to be resolved before the end of the week.
Any further information required please message me to find out.
Thanks,
Jamie

THE CONFLICT IS BETWEEN YOUR DOCUMENT CSS AND THE SPRY CSS.
It is because the
and TAGS have been styled and therefore OVERRIDDEN THE SPRY CSS.
Use CLASS TAGS e.g.
and
and STOP USING THE  TAGS.
N.b. you may need to unstyle any or other TAGS that conflict with the SPRY CSS. (However it's best to start over knowing that styling basic tags may affect the SPRY CSS).

• Using Spry Menu

I'm in the middle of re-doing my astronomy web site using Dreamweaver CS5 and have designed my Spry menu. I haven't done much in Dreamweaver having used FrontPage for the most for several years. I only create my own web sites for displaying my astronomy images. I have it on my index.html page and was expecting the menu to appear on each subsequent new page. I am using a free template and expect the issue is having the menu static on all pages. The area that the menu was intended is on the left side but I could not see how to have the Spry menu display at that location so I used a horizontal menu across the top of the page. My published site, www.astral-imaging.com, was made in FrontPage using a template that used frames so this wasn't an issue. This site is using a different template altogether. What I'm not sure of is when editing the menu, will the changes go site wide everywhere the menu is displayed? So far it appears not to. I must confess that I'm not CSS savvy and suspect this may have some bearing in this. The other issue is how do I get additional pages to show the menu as well? The reason the linked pages show it now is that I copied it to the page I use as a new page template but if you look at the Nebulae sub-menu you'll notice that Planetary is missing on all but the home page. I remember using frames that everything but the body of the pages were the same so I didn't have to deal with this but now I'm a bit lost.The pages I'm working on are posted at http://www.astral-imaging.com/test/index.html
Any suggestions would be very welcomed
Thanks,
Steve

You could use a method called "includes" to include the menu in every page and edit it in a single location
see my answer to http://forums.adobe.com/thread/882527?tstart=0 for some pointers and a Spry example

• Controlling spry menu inside tables

I am trying to add a spry menu bar widget inside a table on my web page. The problem
I am having is the spry menu floats and does not move with the table. Is there something
I must do to nest the spry menu bar inside the table ?
I tried inserting a div tag and then placeing the menu inside of that but the menu still
floats above the table. Any help would be greatly apprieciated

My code is below. I am trying to insert spry menu bar inside table but for some reason the

Item 1

Item 2

Item 3

Item 4

Why nested tables? What are you try to do? Centre the menu or have it aligned to the left?

• How to make a spry menu "fixed"

hey folks,
im redesigning my photography website, and the little technique i had in dreamweaver is rusty. i am going for a menu bar, across the top (with my name, and links to portfolio pages, contact info, etc.) to be visible at all times throughout the site. the body of the portfolio pages will be a horizontal scroll bar. the problem is that when i scroll to see the body, the spry menu scrolls away to the left with the rest. i just need a tip on either fixing the menu in one place despite what the rest of the page does, or if there is a better tool to use. perhaps just inserting the menu as an image and creating hot spots? or something like tables? i know there are several ways to get things done in programs like dreamweaver, just hoping for the one that loads best, looks best, and is easy to edit in the future. thanks!
