Spyder2PRO worthwhile for 20" ACD"?

I recently purchased a 20" ACD to to better edit photos on my 17" PB G4. I was about to order Spyder2PRO from B&H but then saw on a message board that Apple ACDs only allow calibration of brightness and that a pro calibration tool is not worth using on ACD. Is this accurate? I don't want to throw away $200. thanks, ralph

"...Apple ACDs only allow calibration of brightness and that a pro calibration tool is not worth using on ACD..."
I think you misunderstood. Brightness is the only adjustment you can make using the display's controls. Calibration is a whole 'nuther thing. The two bills will be well spent......

  • How to enable HLog for B-ACD Hunt Group

We are using B-ACD for imcoming calls, the hunt group for BACD has 5 members. I want people to be able to login/logoff from this hunt group.
I have this working with the DND button, but then the phone doesn't ring when the extension is dailed directly. So it seems the alternative is using another feature/button called "Hlog".
I've added the HLog softkey but nothing happens when its pressed. I can't seem to find instructions on what else might need to be done to enable HLog.

We still don't have Logging in and out of the BACD Hunt group working.
The #350 and *350 don't seem to work. On the phone when I dial them it connects for a second then disconnects, no feedback if it worked. But when I try calling our business number the phone still gets rung in the hunt group sequence. So the phone isn't getting logged out.
On some of the phones I can see the "HLog" button but when pressed it says "that key is not active here".

  • Recommended design for using multiple PGs for one ACD

Ref:  ICM 8.5 with Avaya Aura CM 6.3 and AES 6.3
We have been told by Cisco that we should not have more than 3000 agents+CTI on our current PG pair.  Since we project we will exceed 3000 agents before the end of the year, we are planning to add another PG pair (with CTI).  We have several different lines of business so we just assumed that we should migrate some to be exclusively on the new PG pair.  Of course, that means we will also have to Translation Route calls transferred between the LOB.
This set us to thinking that there might be a better way.  Does anyone here currently deal with ICM and an Avaya ACD with more than 3000 agents?  If so, can you please share your architecture?  Specifically, do both of your PG pair share the same AES with different Signal ID?  If so, do you share or separate the Switch Links?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.

Thanks for responding, Chris.  We are not using CUCM.  We have Avaya Aura CM.  As such, our Cisco Sales Engineer was quite definitive that our PGs will support 3000 with CTIOS.  We do not use CAD.
The dual-PG design was our plan.  However, my question is more about whether each PIM needs a separate AES Signal ID and, if so, whether each Signal ID needs a separate CTI link.  I know those are more Avaya-specific question but I'm hoping there is someone on here with a similar environment.
I had an additional thought today:  It is possible to configure PIMs on two different servers with the same Logical Controller ID such that we would not have to change any Translation Routes.  The Services and SkillGroups would still be separate, of course.

  • Waiting it out for new ACD revisions?

I am on the edge of splurging for either a new 23 or 30 inch ACD, but I would kill myself if I bought one right before a big revisions. I have read the rumors and all, but I still have absolutely no idea what to do. To go for it, or to wait. Any suggestions??
Maybe a 24 inch HD LED introduction will come after a bit, and if that were the case, I would hate myself for buying a 23 ACD now.

"Maybe a 24 inch HD LED introduction will come after a bit, and if that were the case, I would hate myself for buying a 23 ACD now..."
It will be two weeks after you buy a current model....;)
Seriously, new displays can't be far off. It's been several years since the current line up was introduced and the displays are now the "oldest" products in the Apple lineup...

  • I have a iMac intel 2.4 GHz core 2 duo maxed out at 4 Gigs of memory. I wondering if it would be worthwhile for me to put a solid state drive in in place of the optical drive in order to squeeze a little more speed out of this thing.

I saw a description of using a solid state drive for the system and certain other programs in order to create a snappier response. My iMac certainly seems to drag at times and the drives don't look prohibitively expensive anymore. The article was about macbook pros, so I don't know if the iMac is as good an example. Anyhow, any thoughts?

IMO, SSDs are too expensive, too small, and adding one to an iMac isn't a trivial undertaking.

  • MacPro 1,1 card lacks room for both ACD connectors

This seems an odd problem so I may be missing something -- but the connectors on my two Apple Cinema Displays will not plug into the card side by side.  The plastic casing is just a tad too bulky, so you can't quite get the second connector in if the first plug is filled.   It's the card that originally came with the computer, a Mac Pro 1,1.
    Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

Thanks, Malcolm.  So I wasn't missing anything, they just made the connectors that way.  Ha!  I will check around to see if they possibly kept the extension anywhere, though its been a long time since it came in the box.  Otherwise guess I will have to buy one.

  • Can I use Creative software for 2 Ze

I have a Zen Touch 20G, which I feed with Creative Media Source Software. I just got a Zen Micro, which came, of course, with its own software. Before I install the new files, I'd like to know if the installation will let me choose between the two MP3 players. Or do I have to install software No. 2 in a completely different place? Will the two remain friendly, or will one overwrite the other's Registry settings? Thanks.

Unless you have some huge issue that requires it, personally I would stay stick with what you have. 52Mb is too much for dial-up. Alternati'vely, I'm guessing you have a friend with broadband You could always ask, and then copy it onto the Micro with the USB mass storage mode
To throw more numbers around: The Micro came with firmware version .0.03, but I see that ..0 is available. I did download the latest firmware but have not yet installed it. Any reason why I shouldn't, especially since I haven't yet loaded the Micro up with music and words, which I assume would be lost in a firmware upgrade.
The ..0 is a good firmware, I recommend upgrading to it (it has the reduced standby period, among other things).
To stretch the point even further: I listen a lot to Audible books on my Otis player. There has been talk on this list about an even more recent Zen firmware version that allows Audible formats to play on the Micro. But I don't see a reference to it on the Audible site. Any tips?
The Audible compatible firmware is one of the v2 firmwares, so is markedly different from v e.g. needing Win XP and WMP0. For more on this find the link "the difference between the Zen Micro v and v2 firmware." in the FAQ post.

    ====================================
I have read about the new features in Leopard and would like to have them. At the same time I have read about dissatisfied user reviews about Leopard, mainly from non-Intel based Mac users. So I started this topic hoping to get an answer whether it is worthwhile for me to upgrade to Leopard as soon as possible, or wait til Apple releases more patches for Leopard to iron out the problems?

Sorry about the complexity, but my purpose for the work I did, and the way I did it was to safely upgrade a nicely running Tiger installation to Leopard, with minimum downtime incase things went badly.
The MBP internal drive that Apple uses is only 5400RPM and can't transfer data to boot the operating system or applications as fast as almost any drive in a PowerMac. Even with the ram maxed out, I was not getting all the performance from Tiger that a comparable PowerMac with the same CPU and video could get. Almost all modern PC's and Macs use 7200RPM (or faster) drives which can access and transfer data about 25% faster.
I decided to install Leopard to an external FW800 drive. I used an external drive because I didn't want damage my perfectly good running Tiger installation on the Laptop. I used FW800 because it is presently the fasted port on the Mac that supports booting. eSATA cards are available, but none of them guarantee booting.
I had already tested running applications from both drives by copying the WinXP hard drive file for Parallels and timing the launch from both drives. The external drive was at least 25% faster to boot Windows, and launch other large programs like Photoshop and GoLive.
So, I bought a 500GB newerTechnology miniStack V3 FW800/USB2/eSATA drive. This covers all the bases, Mac and PC, and will be useful for many purposes over the coming years. Who knows, Apple may support booting from eSATA on my next Mac and this drive can run even faster.
I installed Leopard to the new drive a couple of times. First, a clean install with none of my files transferred. This worked perfectly as far as all the hardware compatibility, and applications including TM worked perfectly.
Then I installed Leopard again and imported my applications and settings. This led to a couple of problems that were fixed with a couple of software updates and I fine tuned TM to a degree.
During the next 2 or 3 weeks, I only had to boot back to Tiger on the internal drive 3 times (out of the office).
Once I had a seemingly nice running installation of Leopard with all the updates and Time Machine tested as working well, I decided to clone my old Tiger installation onto an older slower USB 2 drive by using SuperDuper. I booted off of the clone to make sure it was good to go and then set that drive off to the side. It will get used for other projects in a few months, so no money wasted.
I installed Leopard onto the internal drive and imported my settings and files from the external drive. I made sure the system runs and the applications and files I need are available while out of the office.
What I ended up with, is a significantly faster Mac when working in the office with a second monitor helping the workflow, and a fresh, tested Leopard installation running Parallels and WinXP while on the road. When I bring the laptop back in from a field visit I boot from the internal drive and run TM if there has been many changes, then reboot back onto the external drive to do my normal work. I only leave the office with this MBP a day or so a week, and do almost all of my production work at the office on the faster drive.
Win/Win - if you need to spend money for an external drive, get the most out of it you can. In this case, I was also able to ensure that if my MBP is stolen, or hacked while in the field, my personal and financial records would not be on the Laptop.
    OK, fingers tired...

  • Apex 4.0 install note - watch out for PLSQL_OPTIMIZE_LEVEL 3 in 11g!

    Hi all,
I just wanted to share a tidbit I found during installation Apex 4.0 on an 11.2.0.1.1 database on a slower computer...
We had our PLSQL_OPTIMIZE_LEVEL set to 3 to enable code-inlining for PL/SQL objects - and this REALLY slowed down the apex installation big time. It was so slow I aborted the install, then restarted after setting it down to level 2.
After setting it to level 2 - it really sped up and installed fine.
I just wanted to share this in case others run into a hanging install like I did...
I'm thinking that apexins.sql should be modified to "ALTER SESSION SET plsql_optimize_level = 2;" before proceeding - but before then - be sure to keep an eye out for this...
    Good luck!
Edited by: Philbewan on Jun 24, 2010 6:14 PM

    Hi Phil,
    Thanks for posting this information.
I've installed APEX 4.0 with optimization level 3 and code=type = native in an 11.2.0.1 database, and you're correct - it took a while. And I imagine on a "slower computer", this will take even longer. But I reason this is to be expected - you're asking the PL/SQL optimizing compiler to be most aggressive in its optimization against the PL/SQL objects of Application Express...and as you know, there is a lot of PL/SQL in Application Express.
Also, the installation and compilation step is a one-time event. If you're looking for maximum performance for each and every page view (execution of the APEX engine for millions of page views), the extra cost of time associated with installation seems almost trivial, by comparison.
I don't agree that apexins.sql should be modified to alter the PL/SQL optimization level. Customers have it set for a particular reason and the Application Express installer shouldn't override that.
Regardless, I do believe your advice to be aware of this setting is worthwhile for the APEX community. Thanks for sharing this.

  • How to change render resolution of After Effects project in Adobe Media Encoder for an H264 preview?

I'd like to render a 1080i comp at half resolution or third resolution in AME to speed up render times for low-res previews. I just had a low-res H264 preview take 5 minutes to encode in AE, and 28 minutes in AME.
This is easily accomplished in the After Effects render settings. However, the "video" option in AME seems to imply the project is encoded at that resolution, not rendered at it.
I went into AE and changed the setting in the composition viewport to "half", but when I queue it up in AME, the "Match Source" button still indicates 1080.
What is the correct method to get the results I want?
I'm currently using AE CC and AME CC on Windows.

Thanks for taking the time to answer this question. Knowing this isn't possible at least narrows my options down. It would be helpful to provide some kind of list of what comp settings carry over into AME from After Effects. Is it essentially everything that is enabled in the Timeline? (I know that motion blur settings do.)
I'll put this in a feature request, but yes, we need the other half of After Effects Render Queue in AME in order for AME to be a good replacement for rendering from AE. I'll give you my thoughts on why Render Settings are essential before you would actually want to render with AME instead of doing so because you have to (either because you want to render in the background, or need a codec that has been removed from AE.)
    1. Speed: Simply applying a Render Settings preset is much faster than manually setting motion blur, frame blending, work area, etc.
    2. Reliability: Not being able to apply a Render Settings preset at the time of render is a recipe for missing a crucial setting buried in a comp, then having to redo a render and wasting time.
    3. Features: As noted above, there is no way to approximate Render Queue's ability to change resolutions at render, which results in a lot of wasted time when that feature is needed.
Render Settings I think are crucial to making AME rendering worthwhile for AE users:
    1. Rendering resolution
    2. Work Area/Entire Composition toggle
    3. Field Rendering (wait, does this mean AME can't currently render to fields?)
    4. And PRESET ability these settings, so I'm not doing them manually every time.
I realize that your team clearly doesn't spend the same amount of time I do making low res H264 previews and sending final files out in H264 format, so you don't appreciate the impact of the changes you made. Moving to AME for that stuff is a real inconvenience, but implementing the settings above could help soften the blow.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

  • PB G4 detects VGA projector but not 20" ACD

I'm having a strange problem when connecting my 15" PowerBook G4 Ti DVI to a new 20" ACD. When I first got the display, I was able to connect just fine for about 8 weeks. I went on a trip and since my return, the PB won't detect the display.
I took the PB to a Mac store and tried connecting to another 20" ACD... no luck. This lead me to believe that the display adapter was shot. However, I just tried to connect a Benq digital projector via VGA and the PB detects the projector without issue and works in both dual display and mirroring modes.
So far I have reset the PRAM, the NVRAM, and the PMU, but it didn't help.
I've also repaired permissions and repaired the disk (no errors found). Again, no luck.
Finally, I tried closing the lid on the PB and clicking the external mouse to see if I could force the PB to display to the external 20" ACD. The technique worked for the Benq projector, but failed for the ACD.
At this point, I'm not even sure how else to troubleshoot this issue, let alone fix it.
Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Could it be a corrupted driver? Is there any way to reload the display drivers without having to do a fresh OS install?
    Your help is greatly appreciated!

  • Gave up my 23" ACD and moved to Eizo CE240W - No comparison..

    Hi all,
Well as you may have recently read I have been on a serious hunt for an acceptable 23" ACD, I tested no joke about 12+ and payed a bunch in restocking fee's, as I had posted every single display had serious flaws regarding stuck pixels and severe backlight bleeding.
The Eizo CE240W was only a couple of hundred more and I can happily report that this display has not a single stuck pixel (well visble) its backlight is perfect and shows no bleeding what so ever, the backs are very deep and finally grey tones are grey again, I thought at one point I had a very neutral 23" ACD but I was sorely mistaken .
The Eizo has brilliant color and grey tones are truely even and displayed as they should.
Its not as fancy looking as the ACD is, though the screen is a hint larger, the base has far more position ability and the software provided is superb.
I just got so tired of looking for an ACD that wassant completely screwy. the 23" displays suffer from an array of issues and after testing 12+ its apparant its not a random thing.
Put your 23" in a pitch black room and use a pixel tool to set the background to solid black, you will see serious issues, its like pink/grey/blacking clouds sprinkled with stuck red pixels.
I dot know how many people will find this post interesting, but I can say that if you need a good display in a WS format thats 24" the Eizo is great.
the ONLY issue I have right now with the Eizo is that the very far left screen seems to render slightly lighter than the rest of the screen. I have been told this is due to the way the displays are fabricated and that each LCD uses some metal to reflect lighting accross the panel and this is what causes this.
Even with this, it only shows in mid tones and does not effect the perfect backlighting.
    Just wanted to share.
    Cheers!

So basically you're giving this monitor two thumbs up. This is the display I'm looking at.

  • Where can I find a program for better desktop customization?

So, I noticed that the customization options for my Mac OS X are terribly simplistic, as opposed to the detailed options on my Windows 7. Are there any known apps that provide similar, if not better options for font, color, and window shape personalization?

None that are stable as Apple keeps changing things under the hood constantly and breaking them.
Also Apple releases a new OS X version annually, so there is a problem with market share of each OS X version that doesnt' make it worthwhile for developers to keep up with all the changes and breakage that occurs.
OS X is about 6% of the PC market share and broken down like this
    10.4 - 4.5%
    10.5 15%
    10.6 - 52%
    10.7 - 30%
    10.8 - just released
If you want UI customization either run Windows or Linux in a virtual machine.
Windows 7 will last a decade easily, so you can change things and it will stay that way.
Linux versions last a long time too, but the  commercial software selection is limited, some decent freeware though.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
For web browsing you can get away with using Firefox as it's customizable. Safari will make you go blind.

This frankly is terrible, terrrible, terrible advice. If it wasn't obvious, and probably it wasn't obvious to the adviser: granting all permissions grants all permissions to all applets. So once you do that, any applet you download from any site has permission to do anything it likes on your system.
It might be worthwhile for some spammer or malware writer to write an applet that looks for stupid people who have done this to their systems.
And here's another reason why it's terrible advice: it only solves the problem for one computer. If somebody else wants to run your applet off your website then you have to give them the same advice, and now you move from stupidity to criminal negligence.
And if you only ever plan to run it on your own computer, there was no point in writing an applet in the first place. Java applications don't have to deal with the security issues.
