SQL 2012 SP2 - Cannot open Maintenance Plans in SQL Management Studio

Hello...
We have a number of SQL 2012 SP2 instances running on Server 2012 R2 where we cannot open any Maintenance Plans via the SQL Management Studio.
At times we've received an error message screen when attempting to open the Plan, but most of the time just nothing happens when you try to open the Plan.
I cannot get any of them to display the error now to even provide more information there.
This happens even after a reboot and/or restarting SQL server.
Everything else seems to be working and we can examine the individual pieces under the SQL Server Agent -> Jobs, but we cannot open the Maintenance Plan itself.
We can even create new Plans via the "Maintenance Plan Wizard" but not from "New Maintenance Plan" and once a Plan exists, we can't open it.
As a test, I tried connecting from a SQL 2008 R2 server and am able to open the plans, so it appears to be a SQL 2012 Management Studio issue rather than the Plans.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you...

Hello,
Once you modify and save a maintenance plan with a greater version of SSMS (let’s say SSMS 2014) you cannot modify it again
with an earlier version of SSMS again ( SSMS 2012 or earlier). That may be a possibility.
If you did not modify the maintenance plan with SSMS 2014, then try to repair SQL Server 2012, apply the latest service
pack (SP2), or try to uninstall only SSMS and reinstall it again.
If you have Visual Studio installed, please apply the latest update.
Hope this helps.

Alberto Morillo

  • SQL 2005 SP2 - Cannot open Data Flow Task in SSIS

I have just installed Service Pack 2 on my SQL 2005 Standard Edition.
However, now all my SSIS packages will not allow me to open my Data FLow Tasks.  I get the following error:
    TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
Cannot show the editor for this task.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The task returned an unsupported control editor type. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Design)
If I try to create a new Data Flow task I get:
    TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
    Failed to create the task.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The designer could not be initialized. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Design)
I have tried to install the latest hotfixes after this but they had no effect.
    Can anybody help me???? Please?

I have had this same issue, where tasks would open fine in an SSIS package until SP2 was installed and then I get the same issue as noted above, i.e. :
    TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
Cannot show the editor for this task.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The designer could not be initialized. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Design)
If anyone has some ideas on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Backup Maintenance Plan on SQL AlwaysOn Availability Group Secondary Read-Only node

I have 3 node SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability nodes with the 3rd node as Read-Only.
The backup job within SQL Maintenance plan is failing with the following error:

I have verified the SQL AlwaysOn Backup preference to be "Prefer Secondary"
Is there any special steps/settings I need to do to setup and run the backups using maintenance plan in SQL AlwaysOn?

  • Installing SQL 2012 SP2 - The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

    Hi,
I am trying to install the SQL 2012 SP2 in one of the servers. I am getting the error as :
    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

The same setup is working in other servers, but on a particular server I am getting this error.
Server configuration: Windows server 2008 r2 standard edition, servvice pack 1 , 64 bit OS
    How to fix this?
    Thanks

    Hi Venkatzeus,
Based on my research, the issue is caused by that some .dll files are corrupt or missing during the installing of SQL Server 2012 SP2.
In order to troubleshoot this issue, please view the detail error message in SQL Server Setup Log Files. We can read the Summary text under %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log\, and the Detail text in the place %programfiles%\Microsoft
SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log\<YYYYMMDD_HHMM>\Detail.txt. For more details, please see:

  • "Value cannot be null" error when trying to edit or create Maintenance Plan in SQL Server 2008

I have SQL Server 2008 installed on Windows Server 2008 64bit, every time I try to open or create a new Maintenance Plan I receive the error:
    Value cannot be null.
    Parameter name: component (System.Design)
    Program Location:
       at System.ComponentModel.Design.DesignerHost.System.ComponentModel.Design.IDesignerHost.GetDesigner(IComponent component)
at Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.VsIntegration.DtsDesignerService.OpenDesigner(String connectionString, Object connection, String objectUrn)
       at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.DatabaseMaintenance.MaintDesignerMenuHandler.Invoke()
And in the Design view screen
"Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is unable to load this document: Could not load type 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.runtime.Wrapper.IDTSPackageSigning100' from assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.DTSRunTimeWrap, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral'.
I have searched for a possible solution and have tried some suggestions of registering the msxml6.dll but and have installed VS2008 SP1 but I'm not in a position where I can do a full reinstall of SQL Server right now. Any help is appreciated. My SQL server
    environment information is below.
    Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
    10.0.1600.22 ((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 )
    Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools
    2007.0100.1600.022 ((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 )
    Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)
    6.0.6002.18005 (lh_sp2rtm.090410-1830)
    Microsoft MSXML 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
    Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18943
    Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.4206
    Operating System 6.0.6002

I digged a little deeper and figured out it was a missing directory/file in %TEMP%. Seems some CleaningTool removes all files/directories in %Temp% and after that SSMS was not working any longer. The missing file is actually not needed, but the
missing directory causes the "Value cannot be null" error.
    My missing file name was:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\2\6vvdaozf.tmp
But the file name changes on every startup.
So my missing directory name was:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\2
After creating a empty directory with the name "2" in %TEMP% all went back to work fine for me.
I'm not sure the directory name is every time the same, but you can discover your missing file with the process monitor from Sysinternal Tools and filters to "Process Name is ssms.exe" and "Path contains AppData\Local\Temp"
Hope this helps other people to solve their issues too.
Thank you!! When I run %temp% it takes me to "C:\Users\Admin ...~\AppData\Local\Temp\some random number". At first the random number was 3, after I logged off and back on it was 2. My temp variable in enviromental variables is correct. I looked on another machine
running SQL2008 and temp is correct there. If I try to rename the numbered folder SSMS stops working. Any idea?

My database is in an AlwaysOn Availability Group.
Thank you very much for your help!

    Hi all,

My database is in an AlwaysOn Availability Group.
Regular maintenance plan would work. Only thing to remember is that when you create log backup plan, there is a checkbox which says whether it should honor backup preference or not.

Judging by the error message I would say the setup is trying to access a network share that is no longer available to the node due to the failover. How many instances are installed in each node?
Open resource monitor and, in the disk section, check which files are being accessed by I/O threads. See if there are any files in use that the SP2 installer would supposedly try to access.
If possible, save the resource monitor results, failback the instance, and check disk usage in the other node to try to detect any abnormal disk access.

  • SQL 2012 sp2 "The permissions granted to user 'DOMAIN\user' are insufficient ..."

1st let me set the tone by admitting I am not real familiar with SQL, I'm more of an Operations Admin. So this is not a new question I think, although I am having difficulty finding an applicable solution.  Using SQL Server 2012 sp2 on a Windows
2012R2 server.  This is configured to be a SCOM DB server; while on the SQL server itself I open IE and attempt to go to the following URL http://scomsql/reportserver_SCOM I get the
    following error.
    Reporting Services Error
The permissions granted to user 'DOMAIN\user' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) Get Online Help
    SQL Server Reporting Services
I have looked at the Reporting Services Config. Mgr. and it looks like the Report Mgt. URL is set for port 80 and no SSL is configured.  The rsreportserver.config file has the SecureConnectionLevel set to "0"
My domain account is listed under Security\Logins and holds the 'Server Roles' of public and sysadmin, 'User Mapping' is DBO for the 'ReportServer$SCOM' and 'ReportServer$SCOMTempDB' and the role membership shows db_owner and public for these as well.
Any assistance with getting this working would be greatly appreciated.
    # When I wrote this script only God and I knew what I was doing. # Now, only God Knows!

    Hi Wasisname,
The Reporting Services error rsAccessedDenied occurs when a user does not have permission to perform an action. To troubleshooting this issue, please make sure that you have sufficient permission and the report server name is correct.
In fact, reporting Services uses role-based security to grant user access to a report server, and there are two types of roles: Item-level roles and System-level roles. On a new installation, only local administrators have access to a report server. In order
to grant access to visit the URL http://server:port/ReportServer to users, a local administrator must create a role assignment to define the tasks a user can perform. To solve this problem, please refer to the
    following steps:
Start Report Manager by going to URL
    http://scomsql/reportserver_SCOM.
Click Site Settings at the top right of the page.
Click Security in the left pane.
If a role assignment already exists for the user, click Edit.
Otherwise, click New Role Assignment. In user, enter the user account.
Select appropriate access, and then click Apply.
The issue may be caused by the UAC or Internet Explorer security setting, please try to follow this steps:
    1. Open the Internet options of the IE and add the report server URL into trusted site in the Security tab.
    2. Run the IE as administrator.
Besides, if the user need to have access to reports, folders, models and shared data sources, we can assign Item-level roles on the root node (the Home folder) or on specific folders or items.

  • SQL Server Setup Failure 0x84B10001 (SQL 2012 SP2 and SQL 2014 Standard)

I'm having a problem with SQL Server Setup. I had SQL Server 2012 R2 SP1 installed, and the SP2 installer would fail.
I decided to just get SQL Server 2014. The setup (and system configuration checker) for that fails with the same error.

I found this and other posts about similar problems that point at MSDE being the cause.

  • SQL Servers White in SQL 2012 SP2 Management Studio Object Explorer

I had a similar issue before and thought I had resolved it but no, so....
I have a lot of servers on different versions registered in SQL2012 MS 2012 SP2 (tools only). They are all green and I have the option to stop/start in service control (I am an admin on all the servers). When I open Object Explorer most of the time they
are white and I don't have the stop/start options.  I don't have this problem on any other version of MS - as soon as I double click on a registered server they go green - so why do I have this issue on 2012? Any ideas?

    Hello,
The state of a SQL Server Service is provided by WMI and you need permissions to fetch this Information. If the state is shown up with White circle, then because you don't have the permissions.
See MSDN: Configure WMI to Show Server Status in SQL Server Tools

  • SSIS failed to execute in SSDT-BI for Visual studio 2012 after SQL 2012 SP2 upgrade

    Hello,
I have applied sql server 2012 sp2 on my dev workstation and I am currently having this error message when trying to execute a SSIS package from SSDT-BI for visual studio 2012 : "Method
    not found: 'Boolean Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Design.VisualStudio2012Utils.IsVisualStudio2012ProInstalled()'. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.VsIntegration)"
I found this link on SSIS forum :
IsVisualStudio2012ProInstalled() method not found error when running an SSIS package from VS2012
I don't have neither Gacutil.exe nor Visual studio professional installed so it can't be fixed this way... and anyway, this means we will use the old assembly version of ssis...
    sql server 2012 sp2 setup doesn't apply to SSDT-BI 2012 ?
    what can we do ?
    thanks,
    Stéphane

    Hi Stephane Guilleminot,
According to your description, you do not execute a SSIS package from SSDT-BI for visual studio 2012 after upgrading to SQL Server 2012 SP2. The workaround is still necessary to apply SP2 and CU1 for SP2 (11.0.5532), then you still have to replace Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Design.dll
(11.0.5532.0) with the last working version: 11.0.3412.0 from SP1 CU9.
There is similar issue about executing SSIS package after upgrading SQL Server 2012, you can review the following similar post.

  • DQS Not working after SQL 2012 SP2 Applied

    Hi all,
On Friday we had our service provider install SQL SERVER SP2 to our dev server from release 11.0.3000 to 11.0.5058 (Post SP deploy), so that we could test it, before rolling out to the production servers. However on this mornings scheduled job we received
the following error from the DQS component :
    =================================================
The component has detected potential metadata corruption during validation.
Error at DFT Maintain Riskcode [DQS Cleansing [61]]: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): An error occurred in the Microsoft .NET Framework while trying to load assembly id 65629. The server may be running out of resources, or the assembly may not

    =============================
Luckily we only had one component using the DQS as it was a PoC idea to show the business what could be done, without significant overheads to the underlying system, so it was easy to strip out, however I would like to know how to fix this for future reference,
is there a separate SP for DQS or CU that needs to be applied.
We are also seeing the same issue within BIDS, on the work stations that open the relevant package.
    Regards
    Jason.
    Jason

    Thanks Pau,
    Many thanks for this.
I have been looking around during the day and it seems that its the local machines that are out of sync as well especially with the DQS component.
Its a good job our prod server wasn't updated at the same time, thankfully we have separate DQS servers for dev and Prod, so the impact was limited to Dev alone.
    Regards
    Jason.

  • FRM-10043: Cannot open file after converting SQL*Form 2.3 INP to 4.5 FMB

After running the f45gen32.exe on a version SQL*Form 2.3 INP file, it generates
the version 4.5 FMB adn the .err file (that does not indicate that any errors have occurred).
When I attempt to open the converted module using Developer 2000 v.1.3, it continuously
    indicates the following error:
    FRM-10043: Cannot open file
This error is received despite selecting all the required conversion parameters (per metalink and
other notes found on this forum).
This is a conversion of SQL*Forms version 2.3 to 4.5, with the ultimate goal of converting to 6i.
The same process works with other forms.?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have a workaround for this issue?
Is Developer 2000 v.1.3 the incorrect version to use?
    Thank you for your assistance.
