SQL Developer 3.1 out of memory
I new to SQL developer and I been trying to copy data between servers and i run out of memory a lot of times.
And i see that it happens with tables with more than 1 mill rec and got clob etc in it.
I had to write my own program to handle it and i found on the way i got the same problem in the beginning.
So my question is there a setting where i can tell the source (maybe the master also ) internal cursor to refetch the current position after say 10k records. I found doing that releases the memory of the inserted records so i can can continue to add more.
Im running a fetch rownumber on master and reset the source every 20k record so i hit maybe 120 meg memory usage and if i did not do that i seen the memory go up to 2 gig and im only running the server and the app at 4 gig so I crashed all the time.
By using this in my program I have copied 60 tables and 6 gig+ of data and no crash.
Thanks,
Roger
Yes it's helpful so you dont have to use the command prompt to create a dump file.
I was using the Database Copy to avoid having to move files to other server that i might not have system access to, only DB access.
I'm pretty new at using Oracle and I have one DB that needs to move data to other DB without having to write a extra program for it. It also seems that DBLinks does not handle blob/clob either and setting up a stream might not be available.
Thanks,
Roger

SQL Developer 1.2.1 Build MAIN 32.13 (Windows XP)
We can't Update SQL Developer with Times Ten in-Memory DB Extension 1.2.1.1.0 :-((
We did the same actions as described in tutorial
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/viewlets/tt703_sqldev_install_ext_viewlet_swf.html
In addition to tutorial we have "Log In" window
"To download Oracle Times Ten in-Memory Database Extension
you must enter your Oracle Web Account user name and password"
This window was not displayed in tutorial...
We try to use three our OTN accounts and the result
was the same - we was asked with "User name" and "Password"
again, again, again and again,,, :-(
Is it a bug or a feature?
Mayby we didn't understand something or did something wrong?Hi Simon,
I found cause of update failure! It was the HTTP proxy setting.
I turned off "Use HTTP proxy server" checkbox in SQL Developer -> Tools -> Preferences -> Web Browser and Proxy.
After this action SQL Developer was successfully updated with Times Ten Extension.

"Explain Plan" in Oracle SQL Developer is greyed out
Hi all,
I know this is not the right place to post this, but I have look around and do not know where to post question about Oracle SQL Developer - I presume this tool is also discussed here in this forum.
My question is very simple (I presume):
1. I installed Oracle SQL Developer 3.0.04.
2. I added a new DB connection to a DB hosted in one of my servers in the LAN.
3. However, when I am writing some SQL queries, I intend to use the "Explain Plan" feature, but it is being greyed out (disabled).
4. How can I enable it back?Hello,

DB SQL API for BDB: out of memory
Hi,
I posted a related thread here: Report Bug of SQLite-compatible API: Out of Memory Error but it is not answered yet so I am posting it again...Sorry for duplicate.
Basically, we are evaluating Berkeley DB as a candidate for our database solution. However, we ran into an out-of-memory error when using BDB's SQLite-compatible API to deal with memory databases. Here are some simple steps to repro the issue:
1. Open a memory database
2. Insert many records (about 200,000 records) into it
3. Close the database
4. Repeat from step 1.
Expected result: because I already closed the previous memory database, there should be no error.
Actual result: out of memory.
Here's the test program I am using:
int
testMemoryDatabase()
db_handle *db;
const char *sql;
int i;
// Setup database
db = setup(":memory:");
// Create tables
sql = "create table Table1 (col1 varchar(32), col2 int);"
"create table Table2 (col1 varchar(32), col2 varchar(64));"
"create table Table3 (col1 varchar(32), col2 int);"
"create table Table4 (col1 varchar(64), col2 int, col3 smallint, col4 int, col5 DateTime);"
"create table Table5 (col1 varchar(64), col2 varchar(64), col3 varchar(1024));";
exec_sql(db, sql);
// Do insert operations
sql = "insert into Table1 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '523620105');insert into Table2 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx');insert into Table3 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '1688709171');insert into Table4 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '844867696', '32671917', '424084999', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx');insert into Table5 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx');insert into Table1 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '0');insert into Table2 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '0');insert into Table3 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '0');insert into Table4 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '0', '0', '0', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx');insert into Table5 values ('xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxx', '0');";
for (i = 0; i < 20000; ++i)
if (i % 1000 == 0) printf("%d\n", i);
exec_sql(db, sql);
// Clean up
cleanup(db);
int
main()
db_handle *db;
testMemoryDatabase();
testMemoryDatabase();
testMemoryDatabase();
testMemoryDatabase();
// Add more testMemoryDatabase() calls...
The out of memory error somewhat blocks us to use BDB memory DB...if it can be solved that will be great. Also, please point out right place if the forum is not the place to report such a bug.
Thanks a lot!
- lieHi Lie,
I have reproduced the issue and we're investigating a fix that will be available in a future release. If you need a solution sooner than that, please let me know.
Thanks again for the report.

SQL Developer consumes a lot of memory
Sql developer consumes a lot of RAM (around 100 MB) few minutes after start of application . any tips to reduce this?
This is usually due to the caching of database objects on support of code insight and is dependent on the number of objects in the database. As documented in the readme.txt in the sqldeveloper home directory, you can disable code insight.
2.1 To disable Code Insight
Run SQL Developer from a command line using the following statement:
Windows : sqldeveloper -J-Dsdev.insight=false
Linux or Mac: Run sh sqldeveloper -J-Dsdev.insight=false
or edit sqldeveloper.conf and add "AddVMOption -J-Dsdev.insight=false" -
SQL Developer 4 sneaked out with no preview or announcement?
Someone has posted a problem with SQL Developer 4 here.
He has a direct link to the download, but there doesn't seem to be any way to get to it through the SQL Developer home page.
Is this an actual release, or something internal which shouldn't be public?When it's ready, we'll post an announcement.
We can't comment on release dates or future releases and features. -
We have SQL Developer installed on our Citrix farm and we are facing hard times right now. Unfortunately SQL Developer is consuming in some cases more than 650 MB/session. And since we have on each site more than 50 users in same time, server gets exceeded very fast. Currently server is running Windows 2003 R2 edition x86. We know that this is bad and we are planning on switching on Windows Server 2008 R2. And here comes my questions:
Will Windows Server 2008 R2 work more effectively with Java x64 and SQL Developer x64 and resolve our memory issues?
Thank you.Hi,
I have no idea if Windows Server 2008 runs Java applications better than 2003 but, regardless of which you run, here are a couple of ideas that may be of help:
1. x32 Java/SQL Developer starts up with a smaller working set (246,000 KB) than x64 Java/SQL Developer (318,000 KB).
2. Try tweaking the garbage collection algorithm, using Garbage-First:
Re: Memory Leak or Bad Java Garbage Collector
I ran across this (old) comment from a blog on blogs.msdn.com:
Even though Windows Server 2008 R2 is exclusively a 64-bit operating system, 32-bit applications are
supported by enabling the WoW64 optional feature. If this feature is not enabled and you try to run a
32-bit application, the application will fail to execute. The WoW64 execution layer is an optional component
that is installed by default on R2 releases after beta1. You can save resources by removing the feature if
you are not going to be running 32-bit applications on your Server Core install. Regards,
Gary

SQL Developer cannot execute multiple queries in one connection
Hi,
Using : SQL Developer 1.2.29.98, Oracle Database 9i on Windows XP.
Currently I have TOAD and PL/SQL Developer to handle things related to Oracle Database.
I found this SQL Developer tools as an interesting tool which might replace PL/SQL Developer (I assume).
I opened two SQL Worksheets and tried to execute 2 queries (time consuming one) simultanously, suddenly it freezes (the window become grayed). Just like TOAD, we cannot smoothly execute multiple queries on single connection on SQL Developer
I can monitor the query process using TOAD (Session Browser) and found both queries are running while SQL Developer window become grayed and seems not functioning. After the queries have been finished, I mean both of them, the SQL Developer window become normal and "alive" again showing the expected results.
Well, however PL/SQL Developer could handle this. Executing multiple queries in single application is just its unbeatable features.
We can view the query result once its finished instead of until the others being processed, by just only switch the SQL Windows.
Is it true that SQL Developer doesn't support executing multiple queries?
Or is it a feature which we should request?
Or we have to activate this feature by doing some changes on configuration / preferences?
(Do we need to open two SQL Developer instances? what a memory consuming solution).
Regards,
BuntoroSQLDeveloper connections are single threaded and also rather single minded (in that you can't do much else while a long query is running.)
There is an existing feature request http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=42626:39:3685254426061901::NO::P39_ID:4202 for which you can vote.
The workaround is to have multiple connections. Not brilliant but it works. -
SQL Developer takes 7 minutes to bring back list of packages
The database is 11g R2 on 64bit Linux.
Instance has multiple schemas
SQLDev is v3.1.07 (download with JDK)
SQL Dev connects without a problem.
Click the "+" next to Functions, in a few seconds I get the list of functions.
Click the "+" next to Procedures, in a few seconds I get the list of procedures.
Click the "+" next to Packages, between 5 and 10 MINUTES later the list will display.
The exact objects I choose to explore, or the order does not seem to matter.
After 2 or 3 objects, the next load takes an unacceptable length of time.
What is going on here?You can try to find out if the underlying query, that the sql developer issues against the data dictionary is slow.
To do so first find the query, then issue the same query inside sql developer and check out the execution time and explain plan from there.
To find the query you can connect with a DBA account. Use "Tools/Sessions .. " to monitor the sessions. Find the appropriate connection (check for the correct db user, and the module should be SQL Developer). Then start the slow action in the different session. Switch back to the session monitor and refresh it. Check out the SQL that is shown on "Active SQL" Tab.
If this query is slow, then it is not a problem opf the sql developer but of your database installation. Maybe the dictionary cache is to small or the database did not apply statistics to the system tables. In such a case report the problem to your DBA.
it could also be a problem of the connection. Do you use an oracle client to open the connection or something like a thin jdbc driver? try with the oracle client if you don't have that already. -

Oracle is not starting (ORA-27102: out of memory)
Hi All,
We have installed successfuly SAP Netweaver EHP1(SR1) (ABAP and Java) with SUNOS & Oracle10 on the same server.
After installation we have stopped the java instance and tried to start but the database is not starting and it is showing the error
SQL> startup
ORA-27102: out of memory
SVR4 Error: 22: Invalid argument
Then we have added project in /etc/project
NWJ:500:SAP System NWJ:nwjadm,oranwj::process.max-sem-nsems=(priv,2048,deny);project.max-sem-ids=(priv,1024,deny);project.max-shm-ids=(priv,256,deny);project.max-shm-memory=(priv,18446744073709551615,deny)
but it doesn't resolve the issue.
Even we have stopped the Abap instance including database but no use.
Can any one provide the soluion ASAP.
Regards,
VenuHello,
I've hit this ORA-27102 several times when installing on Solaris 10. The problem was that SAPINST (which runs as root) runs its child processes under the root project, even though they have user ID ora<sid> or <sid>adm. Because the root project often has shared memory limited to 2 GB, Oracle fails with ORA-27102 if it needs more than 2 GB.
I'm not quite sure that the above problem corrseponds with yours though. Is SAPINST finished and are you logged in as ora<sid> or <sid>adm and running SQLPLUS manually? If so, make sure that you are indeed running in the correct project. Commands that can help:
id -p
ps -e -o pid,comm,project | grep sqlplus

Sql developer - dbms_output problem
Hi
I am not getting any output using sql developer.
set serveroutput on;
begin
dbms_ouput.enable(10000);
dbms_output.put_line('abc');
end;
anonymous block completedI saw some threads ..with same problems. but I am not understanding where is that dbms_output tab in my sql developer ?
Tried alot .. but no use.
Please advise....!!!
Regards
RekhaIn your SQL Developer (usually at the bottom) there should be a tab "Dbms Output".
If there is not, then you probably have closed that tab at some point by accident - then you can get it back by going in the View menu and clicking Dbms Output.
In that tab is a green plus sign - if you hover over it you will see the tool tip "Enable DBMS OUTPUT for connection".
Clicking that green plus sign is similar to doing "set serveroutput on" in SQL*PLUS.
When I try it, somehow it only seems to work if I run my script using F5 rather than F9?
I think a good place to get further answers is in the SQL Developer forum - some of the people who write SQL Developer are helping out there ;-) -
Out of memory Error while querying SQL Script based Calculation View
Hi All,
I wanted to test the performance of Graphical and SQL Script based Calculation views.
Created Graphical (CA_GRPH) and SQL Script (CA_SQL) Calculation views.
Analytic View (AN_GRPH) for both Calculation views are the same which is Graphical based (90 Attributes and 5 Measures)
In Analytic View data foundation I have a Fact table which has 1.5 Billion records and 9 Dimension Tables –collectively 500 million records (7 Attribute Views). 9 Referential joins with cardinality N:1 and 1 Referential join with cardinality N:N.
I wanted to keep (CA_GRPH) and (CA_SQL) as a base Calculation views and leverage those to create various calculation views (Will be creating different Calc views for respective Business segments)
In order to test this I have created below calc views on top of base calc views.
Graphical Based: Created (CA_GRAPH_XYZ) by having CA_GRPH in projection with 30 Calculated Columns. – This retrieves data in 13 secs
SQL Script Based: Created (CA_GRPH_ABC) by having CA_SQL in projection view with 30 calculated columns – This errors out after 1.50 mins.
Could not execute 'SELECT "COLUMN_A","COLUMN _B"," COLUMN _C"," COLUMN _D", SUM("COLUMN _REVENUE") AS ...' in 1:50.480 minutes .
SAP DBTech JDBC: [2048]: column store error: [2048] column store error: search table error: [1000002] Error executing physical plan: exception 1000002:

Any suggestion / help in fixing this issue will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
AvHi Raj,
Thanks for your time, please find edited snap hot of Analytic View (AN_GRPH) below,
Calculation view(CA_SQL)
/********* Begin Procedure Script ************/
BEGIN
var_out =
SELECT
"COLUMN_1"
"COLUMN_2",
"COLUMN_84",
"COLUMN_85;",
SUM("REVN") AS "REVN",
SUM("MGN") AS "MGN",
SUM("ORD_QTY") AS "ORD_QTY",
SUM("SYS_QTY1") AS "SYS_QTY1",
SUM("SYS_QTY") AS "SYS_QTY"
FROM
"_SYS_BIC"."XYZ/AN_GRPH"
GROUP BY
"COLUMN_1"
"COLUMN_2",
"COLUMN_84",
"COLUMN_85";
END
/********* End Procedure Script ************/
Later i have built one more Calculation view(CA_GRPH_ABC) using (CA_SQL)in projection. i have 30 calculated measures in this final calc view. this final calc view is throwing above mentioned error.
Not sure if i can use SQL script based calc view in graphical based calc views?

SQL Developer High Memory Consumption 3.2.20.09.87
Hello,
I have been using SQL developer for quite some time and had initially had problems in the past with high memory consuption when I use this tool.
I have received and applied advice from this forum and while it had helped a little, the majority of the high memory consuption remained an issue.
I finally got more time to dig around and try to specifically isolate where the problem seems to be coming from and here is what I found.
*1)* I have removed the Check for Updates feature
*2)* I have turned off many of the extensions except for DBA Navigator, Real Time SQL Monitoring, SearchBar and Snippet.
*3)* When I start a fresh SQL Developer Session and initiate a Oracle Connection the application consumes roughly 148 meg fo RAM
*4)* When I open my Windows Task Manager and watch the memory allocated to SQL Developer I notice it goes up when I move my mouse over the SQL Developer tool and When I run through menus at roughly 5k a second or so and the memory is never released back to the system.
*5)* When I run a Large SQL to the grid the memory jumps by about 100 meg or so and will continue to do so every time I repeat the SQL until SQL Developer consumes roughly 748 meg of RAM.
*6)* 748 Meg of RAM seems to be the number when SQL Developer (with one Oracle connection) no longer continues to consume more and then not return the memory to the system.
Is there a way to have SQL Developer automatically clear up it's active memory usage without closing it down and restarting it?
Why does SQL Developer continue to consume more and more memory just from moving your mouse over it and/or by navigating menus?

Thank you.
I applied fixed noted in Re: Reduce SQLDeveloper memory footprint with JDK 1.7
For others, to summarize my changes.
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf
AddVMOption -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions
AddVMOption -XX:+UseG1GC
AddVMOption -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50
AddVMOption -XX:GCPauseIntervalMillis=200
AddVMOption -XX:MaxPermSize=128M
AddVMOption -Xms50M
AddVMOption -Xmx384M
AddVMOption -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=10
AddVMOption -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=10
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf
comment the following two lines as shown below
#AddVMOption -Xmx640M
#AddVMOption -Xms128M
Now SQL Developer runs at roughly 500 meg.
I guess the only thing I have left to ask others reviewing this would be if there is a way to get these memory values down without having much adverse impacts on SQL Developer based on newer JVM switches/functionalities.
The posts that drove these changes are old from a technologoical perspective :) 2010.
