SQL Developer keeps pointing to old TNS entry  Version 2.1.1.64

Hello,
We are using SQL Developer and we just changed our database from host X to host Z. We changed the TNS entry to point to host z but Developer keeps pointing to host x. It seems the entry is cached. We tried deleting the connection and restarting the application. Still no luck. My only thought is that the connection is cached. if true can someone point me to the file that contains the connection info? And if not, can someone provide a alternative resolution to the issue?
Thanks
Rondale

I agree with Turloch, I had a similar issue with SQL Developer 3. Even though I had the environment variable TNS_ADMIN, it basically ignored this variable and was referencing the first TNS_NAMES.ora file it found. I had to remove all copies except the one listed in my TNS_ADMIN variable before SQL Developer found the right one.
It would be nice if the tool would check the TNS_ADMIN variable like other Oracle products do.

  • SQL Developer Keeps finding updates (1.2.1.32.02)

    Hi,
I have just patched my SQL Developer (Windows XP Pro) (extensions tab shows version 1.2.1.32.00) and the automatic update wizard keeps finding a new patch (1.2.1.32.02).
It says it's installed it, but after a restart (including an additional manual one) my extensions tab shows version 1.2.1.32.00 and the update wizard finds the new update again.
Help! (or is it the "Groundhog Day" patch).
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Matt,
Yes, there is a new Check for Updates. It should force the second restart we require and it should update the front panel in the Help -> About to 1.2.1.32.05. If you were on a 1.2.1.32.00 build then the only extension that is updated under your extensions list is the SQL Developer extension, which is 1.2.1.32.05.
You can run the Check for Updates against a 1.2.0.29.98 build (i.e. the initial 1.2 release) or against the new 1.2.1.32.00 build. In both situations had you run the Check for Updates last week, this update will clear the issues you might have encountered.
You should not keep getting prompted for repeated updates. While it's starting to feel like my stock answer these days, please restart your install and this should clear.
    Regards
    Sue

  • SQL Developer Keep-Alive Extension Created!

    Hi All,
I have created a keep-alive extension for SQL Developer as I have always wanted to prevent my connections from timing out. Hope this will become handy to some of you. The download file and instructions are hosted on Google Sites.
    https://sites.google.com/site/keepaliveext/

    Hi Everyone,
Lately I have been getting questions on whether the extension is secure enough to be used as more often than not, a database would definitely contain confidential or sensitive information hence it is absolutely crucial that security is maintained and running external extensions does not seem reassuring. Here, I would like to write a bit on how to ensure that security is maintained when running third party extensions for SQL Developer.
The most secure approach is to scrutinize the source code of the extensions themselves if it is made available at all. If no source code is available, then it would take a different approach which is far more complex and won't to be covered here. Fortunately, extensions for SQL Developer are developed using Java and the beauty of it is that one could easily decompile the classes back into the source code. From there onwards, scrutinize the code thoroughly to ensure there is no rogue logic or any function that would "phone home" for whatever reason other than to check for updates. By practicing self code scrutiny, it would be the most reassuring. As I myself am every bit concerned about security, I do tend to extract out the source code of all the Firefox extensions I use and do a quick glance. ;)
With this, I hope more people will embrace the extensibility of SQL Developer and create more extensions for the community. SQL Developer is a great application and thanks to the team who created it and made it available at zero charge. :D
    Cheers,
    Min Chen
P.S. You can decompile Java classes using the free tool called JD-Gui which can be found at
    [http://java.decompiler.free.fr/?q=jdgui]

  • The new SQL Developer keeps hanging!

    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
SQL Developer give me a break!
I installed this software for the ease of retreival of data from the database, but on the contrary it keeps hanging and has now become a nuisance to use it.
It affects the productivity to a great extent since it keeps me waiting for too long while it fetches data.
Before this I had used Toad(which is not used here anymore), and never had any such problems with it.
In the SQL Developer, the records fetched are now editable. But I don't see that as a boon to us. Infact scrolling through the record to the end has now become a pain. Before to scroll throught a record all you needed to do was press the <-- or
--> keys. Now thats not possible.
Plus, it seems more unstable than the previous version. It just hangs more than before.

    Hi,
Getting extra popup menuoptions in the navigator is really easy (thanks Kris Rice for the skeleton on http://esdev.sourceforge.net/)
I'll try to rewrite some GeoRaptor code so the menu-options will work for SQL Developer 1.1.
Does anyone know some docs/examples for submenus/icons in the navigator popup ?

  • SQL Developer keeps dropping my table cols!!

    Howdy,
Really getting to the end of my tether with SQL Developer now, as it likes to drop all my columns (usually leaves one for me which is nice of it) in my tables if I decide to make a change to it.
for example, if I where to change a column to be NOT NULL it will throw an error saying (Could not drop all columns) and I look at my table and wow, I have ONE column left in the table and all my data is then f**ked. Or if I want to edit a constraint, or a index it will do the same! Its random cos it wont do it all the time.
This is unacceptable really, cos I then have to rebuild the DB table and get all contraints back to it. I would NEVER EVER consider using this for live data, oh that would be catastrophic!
Does anybody else have this problem? Is there anything I can do to maybe avoid the problem occuring again?
    Any help will be appreciated!

    Hi,
Sorry, this hasn't just started happening, been doing this ever since I started using SQL Developer, so now I just try to steer clear on making changes that I know has potential of causing me trouble.
At the moment I am on:
    Vista 64bit
    SQL Developer 1.2.1 Build 32.13
Latest version of Java (only downloaded it last week.
But this problem also occured on Vista 32bit witht he same version of SQL Developer. I tried it with the Java included version, and java installed on my machine, but it still done it.
I mainly get the problem if I Right Click > Edit and change Indexes or foreign key details.
I'm running from /bin/ at the moment as I am in a 64bit environment, but it makes no difference what .exe I use!
The error I get is always "Unable to drop all columns"... this is when I was NOT dropping columns, I was just making a change, but I assume oracle drops them and rebuilds it or sumin (im no DBA). Incidently it's usually a DATE column I am left with after its decided to drop all my other columns?

  • SQL Developer asks for java.exe with the version that has java built in.

I have a user with the following platform:
    Windows XP2
    SQL Developer Version 1.5.4
The version they are trying to get running is the one that has the JDK built in. However, when they try and startup SQL Developer it asks for the location of java.exe.
However, when I run the same exact version on my workstation, I do not receive the prompt for a java.exe.
I checked the documentation, and I couldn't find anything related to this particular issue, however I may have missed it.
Can anyone provide me with any guidance please? Thanks.

Resolved. There was a difference of permissions on the user's machine.

  • Java extension for SQL Developer 2.1 (SqlEditor)

    Hello,
we are developing a java extension for SQL Developer. It was working fine in version 1.5.5 but it seems that some of the java classes were changed in version 2.1 so it does not any more. In the SQL editor, we want to have a context menu action that gets the selected SQL statement and calls a database function with it as an argument. Our code looks like
    @RegisteredByExtension("our.developer.extension")
    public final class OurCommand extends Command {
    public int doit() {
    SqlEditor sqlEditor = (SqlEditor)getContext().getView();
    String query = sqlEditor.getView().getSqlStatement();
    sqlEditor.executeSql(query, "");
    //or
    //sqlEditor.getView().scriptRunner(query);
Unforunately, in SQL Developer 2.1 the class oracle.dbtools.sqlworksheet.sqlview.SqlEditor does not exist. Does anybody know how to write this example for version 2.1? Is there an API documentation (alas, [http://wiki.oracle.com/page/SDK+2.0] is an empty article)?
BTW, does anybody know how to open the dialog for connecting to a database when sqlEditor.getConnection() is null?

I got it to work using a BASIC call instead of my normal TNS call.
We use MS SMS to package the Oracle client and SQL Developer and push it out to users so we don't have people visiting desktops. Also, we use OID to store the entries instead of a tnsnames file so that we don't have to maintain a TNSNAMES file.
I am testing 2.1 as we would eventually upgrade when it goes GA.
2.1 seems to be built on Oracle 11g. Issue will be that since 99% of our databases are 10gr2 as well as 100% of our client population will be be forced to upgrade the Oracle client to use 2.1 as we do today without lots of changes for the end user?
We don't broadcast the information the average user requires for a BASIC connection so that is out for non technical users..
We have SQL Developer 1.5.5 right now and this is not and issue.
Hopefully, this will be resolved during EAI for 2.1.

  • Why does SQL Developer sometimes refuse to activate the debug controls?

I can find the procedure or package that I want to work in, compile it for debug, set break points, provide the required input parameters, and sometimes SQL Developer works as expected. That is, it activates the debug control buttons (step into, step over, etc.) But, other times, it just leaves them greyed out. Why? I find this frustrating.
OK, maybe my version of SQL Developer is a bit old, but I have seen this occasionally in every version of Sql Developer I have used. I now have SQL Developer 2.1.0.63. We have an Oracle11.1.0.7 database. I have a 64-bit Windows7 desktop. I think my Java version is also a bit old, but it seems to be compatible with the EBS R12.0.6 application that I need to support. I'm not a Java expert. If I go to a C:\ prompt, and type: "java -version", It returns: "1.4.2_04".

    >
I now have SQL Developer 2.1.0.63.
    >
Maybe so but why aren't you using the latest 3.x version? There have been many bug fixes and new functionality since the version you are using.
    >
I think my Java version is also a bit old
    >
You think? Java 7 is out so version 1.4.2 is definitely old. And especially if you support EBS because I think R12 itself uses Java 1.5
You may want to check the EBS forum
    Java/JRE Version compatabile for R12.0.6
And now you have an Oracle 11.1 database?
Here is the official link that has the jdbc and oracle version support
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/jdbc-faq-090281.html#02_02
    >
See section - Which JDBC drivers support which versions of Javasoft's JDK?
11.1.0 OCI and THIN Driver - JDK 1.5.x and JDK 1.6.x
Please note that JDK 1.4 is not supported by the 11 drivers.
    >
Did you notice that last line?
You may want to rethink your plan to use those older versions of Java and SQL Developer.

  • Why does SQL Developer sometimes not allow me to "Disconnect"?

Sometimes when I'm ready to close SQL Developer, I try to get out gracefully, but the "Disconnect" option for the only connection I have open is greyed out. Why? The only option I know then is to close SQL Developer by clicking the "x" in the upper, right corner.
My version of SQL Developer is a bit old: I have SQL Developer 2.1.0.63.

Actually, I think the link Alessandro posted is helpful. I cannot reproduce the behavior on Win XP, but can on Linux (somewhat). That is, Properties gets greyed out at times, but not Disconnect or Apply Filter. Retrying the right-click resolves the problem, as he notes.
So I assume my point (1) would be more nearly correct if restated as "Bug or timing issue".
As for (3), I really cannot give a good example. If I open a Tool menu item like Monitor SQL or Monitor Sessions on, say, the SYSTEM user, the Disconnect option is not greyed out and if used will close all the open windows for that connection. If I run Debug on a package/procedure/function, Disconnect also remains enabled. Clicking on it produces a "Cannot Disconnect" dialog warning with this text: "The database connection cannot be closed while an active debugging session exists". Perhaps I'm mistaken entirely, or just confused after seeing that behavior on some older version of SQL Developer

Hopefully for you, the machine is not reachable from internet !
Your giving online everything needed to log in as system ! that is quite dangerous. I guess the "Onsite team" would be pretty mad discovering that.
You should edit your previous post before too much people get to it.
Regarding your problem, I guess you can't get to the machine itself (maybe in a different network).
Can you try to ping it from your computer ?ping 51.17.130.121
This is a made-up IP, you'll have to replace with yours

  • CVS Versioning unable to connect in SQL Developer 2.1

I just upgraded to SQL developer 2.1 from 1.5. I did the check for updates and the CVS Versioning that gets installed is version 11.1.1.2.36.49.42 For some reason this version will not let me connect through ssh to CVS. I double checked the connection and the test of it fails. The CVS versioning in SQL developer 1.5 worked fine (11.1.1.0.22.49.42). is there any way to use SQL developer 2.1 with CVS Versioning 11.1.1.0.22.49.42??

I am having this same issue, with slightly different versions and on two different computers. I have SQL Developer 1.5 on WinXP running cvs version 11.1.1.0.22.49.44. Connections to CVS via ssh work fine. I installed SQL Developer 2.1 on a new machine with Win 7. I had to check for updates becuase CVS versioning was missing from this release. The update gave me cvs version 11.1.1.2.36.55.30. I set up a CVS connection and the test failed. I tried exporting the connections - didn't work. I also tried pasting in the cvs_connect.xml file from the old computer to the new one - that also did not work.
Is there any resolution for this issue? Or a work around?

  • Variable value not showing in sql developer  tool

    HI,
I am using sql developer tool. when i take mouse in variable name at debugging its not showing variable value and instead showing variable name data type and owner. but in past i have used sql developer tool where when i take mouse on variable at debugging mode it shows the varable value.  please tell me is there any issue in sql develper tool currently i am using.
    sql developer version 2.1.0.63

Sorry - but I doubt if you will get much help for that ANCIENT version of Sql Developer.
My best suggestion is to download the current version and see if you still have the problem. There have been HUNDREDS of bug fixes since that version you are using.
    Oracle SQL Developer Downloads
Take note that the current version REQUIRES a much higher JDK version than what you may be using. And do NOT try to install the new version on top of the old one.
Install the new version into a totally new folder. You will be ask if you want to import your settings from your current version.

  • SQL Developer 1.5.4.59.40 - IO Exception: Undefined Error VENDOR CODE 17002

    Hi All.
    I hope someone can help.
I have recently installed Oracle XE on my Vista Ultimate laptop and it is up and running with no apparent problems. I then connected to the HR schema on XE with no problems using SQL Developer 1.2.1.3213 (OLD Version). I noticed that SQL Developer 1.5.4.59.40 (NEW version) was available and downloaded it (the offering without JDK included) and renamed the "C:\Program Files\SQLDeveloper" folder holding the older version to "C:\Program Files\SQLDeveloper_Orig" and placed the new version of SQL Developer in the Prog Files directory to give "C:\Program Files\SQLDeveloper".
I then ran SQLDeveloper.exe (NEW) and when requested gave the JDK path as "C:\Program Files\Java\JDK_1.6.0_11\bin\java.exe" ('Java -version' gives 1.6.0_11-b03) and migrated over the settings from the previous version of SQLDeveloper (OLD).
The Application loads fine but when i attempt to connect to XE's HR schema i get the following error:
    "IO Exception: Undefined Error
    VENDOR CODE 17002"
I have searched to try and find out what is going on but cannot find any solutions that work. The previous 17002 error solutions on this forumn have all failed.
These included changing the JDK.conf file to hold route to JDK directory and also creating a 'bat' file.
My system does not have the directory for the JDK in it's PATH environment setting (either USER or SYSTEM) but does include a directory path under SYSTEM environment vars to another version fo JDK on my machine under "C:\Program Files\Sun\JDK\". I thought this may be causing a conflict but it is version 1.6.0.05_b13 and is also compatible-is it not? I also have Java JRE6 (1.6.0_12-b04) on my machine - this does not have a PATH variable and was not referenced when loading SQL Developer when loading the first time.
Can anyone help me resolve this, why can the previous version still connect OK to XE and not new version? is there something i am missing? Do i require the Java JDK Directory to be placed under a PATH environment SYSTEM variable?
    Thanks in advance,
    M

  • Why does SQL Developer insist on opening up the package header?

When expanding a package (clicking the '+') SQL Developer keeps opening up the package header (at least the first time you click it). I'm very rarely interested in viewing the header and it's annoying to have all those tabs open.

See SQL Dev 2.1 RC1 - Expanding packages under Schema Browser
Don't know if dev filed a bug against this, so to be sure you'd have to log a SR on Metalink/MOS.

  • Can connect using sqlplus, cannot using SQL Developer

I cannot find out why I cannot connect using SQL developer, while sqlplus works fine with the same login information.

It seems that I have connection to the server, but from some reason it is disconnected when I'm using SQL Developer, but works fine with sqlplus.
Any ideas on what it might be?
    Thank you in advance,

The connection export function it's available in 2.1.1.64, you need to right click on the main Connections node, and it will allow you to export all or part of the current connections, or import from a previously exported file.
As for the highlight statement feature it's available in SQLDeveloper; actually you do not even have to highlight the required statement, as long as you take the habit of ending every statement with a ";", in this case you only need to place the caret inside the statement and SQLDeveloper will automatically highlight it for you (if you want to manually highlight a statement you can still do so without problems).
Finally as a last try to solve your connection problem without having to call for network support you could try to check
Preferences -> Database -> Advanced -> Use OCI/Thick DriverThis will force SQLDeveloper to use your oracle client for connections instead of it's native JDBC based connections (even if you use TNS based connections you will still use JDBC unless you have this checked).
As for other graphical tools for Oracle there are many both free or for a price.
    1) In the for price world Toad stands out, i heard of a free option too but I'm not sure of the limitations.
    2) For free you can use DBVisualizer which is fairly good (never used it too much thou).
    3) Finally there is SQuirreL which is both free and open source but it has fairly basic functionality compared to the two above.
Obviously there are many others, but IMHO few will provide you with the same functions of SQLDeveloper or Toad for Oracle databases
