SQL Developer - Schema - Application Express - insufficient privileges
Hello there,
we use a couple of apex applications on different workspaces here and every workspace has a same named schema.
Every schema has a schema user (named like the schema) and we usually work with the sql developer.
Everything works there but when i try to access the apex application over "Application Express" -> "Application name" i see the main properties of the application but when i try to call the tab "Pages" or "Processes" i get an ORA1031 (insufficient privileges).
On another 10g / Linux / Apex Server it works like a charm.
What shall i configure to make it work? GRANT SELECT ANY TABLE works but i don't want to grant this to the schema user.
Regards
Daniel
(Oracle 11g / Windows / Apex 4.1)
Hi,
thanks for your answer.
Yes, the applications use "their" schema as parsing schema (Applicationdefinition -> Parsing-Schema).
Is that what you asked for?
Thanks
Daniel

Oracle SQL Developer and Application Express
Hi all,
I have a SQL Developer 1.5.4.59.40 and have an application developed in Application Express 10G XE with APEX 3.1.2. I have successfully opened my schema which owns an application, but to my surprise there is no node for viewing my application????? How can i view my application?

Edited by: Sunil Bhatia on Mar 26, 2009 9:39 AMHello,
If you go to your parsing scheme in SQL Developer for ex. SCOTT you'll see a node Application Express.
That should list all the applications that have the SCOTT parsing scheme defined in your APEX application.

Statement processed.
on sql developer I get
anonymous block completed why???
DECLARE
n_pct employees.commission_pct%TYPE;
v_eval VARCHAR2(10);
n_emp_id employees.employee_id%TYPE := 145;
BEGIN
-- get commission percentage
SELECT commission_pct
INTO n_pct
FROM employees
WHERE employee_id = n_emp_id;
-- evalutate commission percentage
CASE n_pct
WHEN 0 THEN
v_eval := 'N/A';
WHEN 0.1 THEN
v_eval := 'Low';
WHEN 0.4 THEN
v_eval := 'High';
ELSE
v_eval := 'Fair';
END CASE;
-- print commission evaluation
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Employee ' || n_emp_id || ' commission ' || TO_CHAR(n_pct) || ' which is ' || v_eval);
END;

The client makes the call (e.g. passing the PL/SQL anon block to the server to be parsed and executed).
This is successful. The server returns a zero return code to that client call. This means successful completion of that database call.
The client can now choose to display any message it wants to inform the user of that - from "+hey dude, it worked!+" to "+command completed successfully+" or whatever.
The database does not return a message string in response to that call - only a return code. What the client can do is make another call and request the associated message from the client driver for that return code. In this case, an English language message file (as queried by the driver) will return the message string, "+normal, successful completion+". -
Oracle Pl/Sql and Oracle Application Express for Beginners
Good day,
Have a prodigy that is strongly interested in oracle application express.Haven know that he will only do we in APEX if he is good in pl/sql and have some skills in html and javascripts.
For such person,what are the books that i can recommend for him,that will guide and assist him?Will be highly grateful if anybody can assist.Sc0tt wrote:
I think it also falsely gives the impression that one does not need to understand the database at all because Apex can do everything for you...This is why I echo Munky when he says that you need a solid understanding of data models and the database before attempting to build an application.
I absolutely concur with this view. When I first started using ApEx, I was basically given a user guide and told to get on with it :-) Subsequently, for the first 6 months or so, I built probably fairly lousy (but functional) apps until I got a better grasp of Oracle architecture.
That being said, SQL is an absolute must if you are going to work on a database. PL/SQL really should be learned as well because your application will be limited without it. CSS and Javascript and nice to have's, but they can be learned as you go. Since all of the api's are built in pl/sql, it would really hinder what you could do if you didn't know it.One resource I have found very useful is the good old 'Ant' book a.k.a. Oracle PL/SQL Programming by Feuerstein, et al. I have a well-thumbed 4th edition sitting on my desk at the moment - weirdly for a text book, rather a joy to read.
I personally found Jay-Lew's "Cost-based Oracle Fundamentals" a somewhat bitterer pill to swallow - tough on the way down but good for one's constitution! -
Weird Error - sometime getting ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
Problem - Java process throwing java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges for simple select statement select * from MYTABLE , table having only three rows
Observation - While investigating. I did same select from sql developer using same credential, I get same ORA-01031: insufficient privileges error in sql developer too BUT ONLY if I create new connection. (Disconnect and connect again), If I fire same query again in same connection it runs fine.
SELECT * FROM MYTABLE;
there is no problem if I run query in small case (notice only select and from in small case), even if it is fresh connection there is no error.
select * from MYTABLE;
I am out of any clue what is going on. Any help?

I recently started working on the Oracle SQL developer. I have 'select' privileges on the QA schema and when tried to execute proc in QA. It is giving the error as 'The file-based source <procedure Name> is not present in the database. Was it compiled?'
instead 'you do not have sufficient privileges to execute this procedure'. Did research on internet but with no luck.What configuration changes needed to be done to make it work.Guide me.Sounds like you do not have the correct privileges. What should have been granted to you by the QA user, or some other user with appropriate privileges, is...
grant EXECUTE on "QA"."<PROCEDURE_OF_INTEREST>" to "<YOUR_USERID>" ;
Note that a grant of execute on a procedure has nothing to do with grants of select on some or all of QA's tables and views.
So, as Vadim suggests, from your connection node in SQL Developer's Connections view, if you expand the Other Users node, then expand QA and look in the Procedures node, do you see the procedure of interest? If not, you cannot expect to be able to execute it from your userid's connection. And even if you do see it, you may have some other privilege that permits viewing but not executing, like...
The role SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE
The system privilege SELECT ANY DICTIONARY
And even if you do not see it there, then having certain other privileges granted to you could permit executing it in general, like...
The role EXECUTE_CATALOG_ROLE
The system privilege EXECUTE ANY PROCEDURE
Also, note that the 3.0 release is a bit dated nowadays. Upgrading to 4.0.3 production or even the 4.1 EA2 (early adopter) release will, in general, give you a better experience.
Best wishes,

SQL Developer High Memory Consumption 3.2.20.09.87
Hello,
I have been using SQL developer for quite some time and had initially had problems in the past with high memory consuption when I use this tool.
I have received and applied advice from this forum and while it had helped a little, the majority of the high memory consuption remained an issue.
I finally got more time to dig around and try to specifically isolate where the problem seems to be coming from and here is what I found.
*1)* I have removed the Check for Updates feature
*2)* I have turned off many of the extensions except for DBA Navigator, Real Time SQL Monitoring, SearchBar and Snippet.
*3)* When I start a fresh SQL Developer Session and initiate a Oracle Connection the application consumes roughly 148 meg fo RAM
*4)* When I open my Windows Task Manager and watch the memory allocated to SQL Developer I notice it goes up when I move my mouse over the SQL Developer tool and When I run through menus at roughly 5k a second or so and the memory is never released back to the system.
*5)* When I run a Large SQL to the grid the memory jumps by about 100 meg or so and will continue to do so every time I repeat the SQL until SQL Developer consumes roughly 748 meg of RAM.
*6)* 748 Meg of RAM seems to be the number when SQL Developer (with one Oracle connection) no longer continues to consume more and then not return the memory to the system.
Is there a way to have SQL Developer automatically clear up it's active memory usage without closing it down and restarting it?
Why does SQL Developer continue to consume more and more memory just from moving your mouse over it and/or by navigating menus?

Thank you.
I applied fixed noted in Re: Reduce SQLDeveloper memory footprint with JDK 1.7
For others, to summarize my changes.
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf
AddVMOption -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions
AddVMOption -XX:+UseG1GC
AddVMOption -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50
AddVMOption -XX:GCPauseIntervalMillis=200
AddVMOption -XX:MaxPermSize=128M
AddVMOption -Xms50M
AddVMOption -Xmx384M
AddVMOption -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=10
AddVMOption -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=10
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf
comment the following two lines as shown below
#AddVMOption -Xmx640M
#AddVMOption -Xms128M
Now SQL Developer runs at roughly 500 meg.
I guess the only thing I have left to ask others reviewing this would be if there is a way to get these memory values down without having much adverse impacts on SQL Developer based on newer JVM switches/functionalities.
The posts that drove these changes are old from a technologoical perspective :) 2010.

Migrate/Import/[etc.] PL/SQL Web-Toolkit Application to APEX
Hello all,
I've only recently learned about APEX and have dabbled with it for a little while, and I'm quite impressed with how amazingly quick it is to develop applications with it.
A few co-workers and myself are trying to convince "The Management" that we should pursue using APEX to develop our Enterprise Applications. Currently we write our web apps using the PL/SQL WebToolkit, accessing our applications at URL's like: http://host/dad/[package.]procedure .
Recently (within the past month) there was a convention in the Southern California region where I believe some people from TUSC presented on APEX. As I understand it, they said it was possible to migrate existing applications (written in packages and procedures) to APEX. I'm also told that it is possible to view the PL/SQL that is rendered by APEX to display the application.
We've practically sold our Director, however he has a few outstanding issues he's asked me to research, as he feels his boss would be most concerned with:
* How much effort will it take to migrate/import/etc the PL/SQL WebToolkit Application to APEX
* Should the need arise, how much effort would it take to move from APEX back to PL/SQL WebToolkit
I've tried researching these topics over the past few days and I haven't really come up with much. I realize that you can call PL/SQL packages/procedures/etc from within a region, but as I read on a thread in these forums ( How to jump from mod_plsql to APEX! ), you still won't be able to take advantage of the Items, Computations, Processes, etc. Is there, in fact, a way of importing a PL/SQL-developed Web Application into APEX to take advantage of all its tools? I would imagine it would be quite a feat to be able to create the items for the form fields, maintain the layout and such, but I need to provide my Director with as much information on these topics as possible.
Many of us developers are really excited at the prospect of developing with this tool; it would be a shame to lose the opportunity over not being able to provide any information on the topics above.
Thanks in advance for your assistance,
-LuisHi Luis,
I had a client a couple of years back who had an existing PL/SQL Web Toolkit application who used the htp.p etc calls to generate the HTML (and in some cases CSS) for their site. They were interested in using Application Express and asked me to design a new administration module for their site (which I did). The development went extremely smoothly so they then asked about re-writing their existing site in APEX (since maintaining the old site was not a straight-forward task).
Fortunately for me, the original designer had the foresight to put lots of the application logic into packages (which I could reuse), but I quickly (about 2 or 3 days from memory) created a custom theme and templates in APEX which gave the same look and feel as the existing site.
Personally, I think if you tried to re-use the existing htp.p calls (by using PL/SQL regions etc), then you would be missing out on some of the major advantages of using APEX (such as the ability to easily change the look and feel of your application).
I always think that migrating to a new tool/platform etc is a great opportunity to re-examine your existing code to perhaps see if you can do things differently (speed up those queries, perhaps make the navigation more logical etc).
So, yes you can certainly re-use lots of your existing packaged logic, but I would also take the leap and use the features that Application Express provides to make future maintenance of your application easier.
Just my thoughts.

SQL Developer vs Oracle Administration Assistant for Windows
I'm new to oracle and have logged into the oracle sql developer with a very low privileged user account. I see other users defined, but when I login to the server and open the oracle administration assistant, I don't see any users. The account I'm logging in under is the account the server is using to run oracle. Is there a reason I can't see these other users on the server?
ThanksThe users you are seeing in SQL Developer are authenticated by the database and not Windows; therefore, they are not External OS Users so they won't show up in that list. An external user (i.e. one authenticated by Windows) would need to be created in order to be visible on that list.
If you want to confirm the type of authentication used, you can execute the following query as a user with the ability to query the dba_users view:
select username,
authentication_type
from dba_users
order by username;Here's a snippet of the output on my local system:
USERNAME AUTHENTICATION_TYPE
OE PASSWORD
OLAPSYS PASSWORD
OPS$LIVERPOOL\MARKWILL EXTERNAL
ORACLE_OCM PASSWORD
ORADEMO PASSWORDThe users with PASSWORD authentication are authenticated by the database and the user (OPS$LIVERPOOL\MARKWILL) with EXTERNAL is authenticated by Windows. That user shows up in the list in the Administration Assistant as expected.
Hopefully that makes a bit more sense now. -
How to user ORACLE as username in SQL Developer
Hi,
I am new to sql developer. Could you please tell me how do I connect as "ORACLE" user in SQL developer?
I have full privileges using sys & oracle. I tried using sql as sysdba too but it is not accepting it in spite of providing correct password.>
When I tried connecting to the database as " username - sys as sysdba" in spite of providing correct password, it says, logon denied, incorrect username/password. The oracle database version is 10.2.0.4 & sql developer is 3.5.
>
Are you sure you are using Oracle's sql developer?
This is the official product page
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html
IT shows the current latest version is 3.1.07.42 so Oracle doesn't have a version 3.5 yet.
And the official product does not have a " username - sys as sysdba" selection anywhere that I can find. There is a role selection dropdown that includes a SYSDBA choice.
So you provided information that can't possibly be correct and you did not respond to any of the questions that I asked other than DB version.
If you want help you need to provide SPECIFIC information about what steps you have taken and what results you got.
What steps did you take, specifically, to create a user called "ORACLE"? What user was used to create the "ORACLE" user? What grants (roles & privileges) were granted to the user named "ORACLE"?
As for me, since you are not willing to provide information about the other questions that were ask I can't help you so I wish you luck. -

Insufficient privileges - Split Partitioned IOT
Hi,
Can someone help me figuring this out. I'm trying to do a SPLIT PARTITION in a stored procedure.
SQL> select * from v$version where rownum = 1;
BANNER
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 - 64bi
1 row selected.This is my sample table:
SQL> CREATE TABLE tab (
period NUMBER(13) NOT NULL,
check_id VARCHAR2(4) NOT NULL,
opkr_number NUMBER(7) NOT NULL
,CONSTRAINT tab_pk PRIMARY KEY (period, check_id, opkr_number)
ORGANIZATION INDEX COMPRESS 2
PARTITION BY LIST (period)
PARTITION tab_p72 VALUES(72),
PARTITION tab_p73 VALUES(73),
PARTITION tab_rest VALUES(DEFAULT));
Table created.And I want to do this in my procedure:
SQL> ALTER TABLE tab SPLIT PARTITION tab_rest VALUES(74) INTO (PARTITION tab_p74, PARTITION tab_rest);
Table altered.
SQL> ALTER TABLE tab DROP PARTITION tab_p74;
Table altered.This attempt won't work:
SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE myproc
AS
BEGIN
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER TABLE tab SPLIT PARTITION tab_rest VALUES(74) INTO (PARTITION tab_p74, PARTITION tab_rest)';
END;
Procedure created.
SQL> exec myproc
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
ORA-06512: at "XQL_STIK.MYPROC", line 4
ORA-06512: at line 1Only if I put in AUTHID CURRENT_USER, it will. And this what I just cannot figure out.
SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE myproc2
AUTHID CURRENT_USER
AS
BEGIN
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER TABLE tab SPLIT PARTITION tab_rest VALUES(74) INTO (PARTITION tab_p74, PARTITION tab_rest)';
END;
Procedure created.
SQL> exec myproc2
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> ALTER TABLE tab DROP PARTITION tab_p74;
Table altered.It cannot be the ALTER TABLE privilege.
SQL> create or replace procedure myproc3
as
begin
execute immediate 'ALTER TABLE tab ADD x NUMBER';
end;
Procedure created.
SQL> exec myproc3
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> DROP TABLE tab PURGE;
Table dropped.Can anyone see what I'm missing?
Edit: I can even do this, so it must have to do with the SPLIT (And this being an IOT)
SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE myproc4
AS
BEGIN
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER TABLE tab DROP PARTITION tab_rest';
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER TABLE tab ADD PARTITION tab_p74 VALUES(74)';
END;
Procedure created.
SQL> exec myproc4
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.Best regards

- Added DROP/ADD exampleHi Herald,
and Centinul.
Thanks for that metalink. Looked promising, but I'm not sure. It seems that I can use ALTER SESSION, even in a SP.
SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE myproc5
AS
BEGIN
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER SESSION SET NLS_LANGUAGE = american';
END;
Procedure created.
SQL> select value
from nls_session_parameters
where parameter = 'NLS_LANGUAGE';

SQL> set role none;
Set role complete.
SQL> exec myproc5
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> select value
from nls_session_parameters
where parameter = 'NLS_LANGUAGE';
VALUE

1 row selected.
SQL> select * from session_privs

Edit:
[Bug:1548539|https://support.oracle.com/CSP/main/article?cmd=show&type=BUG&id=1548539]
Seems to indicate that CREATE TABLE is the thing I'm looking for.
This seems to be consistent with what Bartek has.
Can anyone confirm, by running some of my original test case with and without CREATE TABLE privilege?
I'm sorry for asking for this final confirmation, unfortunately it would be quite painful for me to have some privileged user do that for me.
Regards
Peter

Insufficient privilege when run SQL in PL/SQL Developer
Hi,
My developer had strange behavior when run below SQL from PL/SQL Developer. It will come out with "*Insufficient Privileges*" message.
SELECT Fiscal
FROM pmaps_fiscalweekonly
WHERE intend >= trunc(sysdate)
AND rownum < 5
ORDER BY intend ASC;
Same SQL run without any problem in SQLPLUS and SQL Developer.
But if we use small asc instead capital ASC, it run without problem also in PL/SQL Developer.
SELECT Fiscal
FROM pmaps_fiscalweekonly
WHERE intend >= trunc(sysdate)
AND rownum < 5
ORDER BY intend asc;
Kindly check if someone have any idea.
ZlTzhilongtan wrote:
But the privilege problem only happened when capital ASC keyword was used in ORDER BY clause. If small asc keyword was used, it run without problem.
It seems to me, it does not relate with privilege or role grant. Please advise. Thanks.
ZlT.I think you should sk this question in a support forum for PL/SQL Developer. The possible bug seems directly connected to this tool. If I remember rightly then this tool is from ALLAutomations. You should ask them. THis forum would be the wrong place to ask.
