SQL Express 2014 in place upgrade doesn't work

I have 64-bit Windows 8.1 with all the latest upgrades (downloaded from MSDN last week). I have had SQL Express 2012 With Advanced Services installed for a long time and all working correctly.
When I do an in-place upgrade to SQL Express 2014 with Advanced Services (RTM), it doesn't do the upgrade; it just disables and stops the Browser Service so I can't connect with SSMS. When I restart the Browser Service, I can connect again but the splash
screen shows SQL 2012 and when I am connected, the version is 11.0.3128.
I subsequently tried a Repair option but this didn't achieve anything and there were no errors in the log file. If you can remind me where to find it, I can post it here.

The first part of my previous post is from that file (...\Log\20140404_162820\Summary_GORDON-WIN8_20140404_162820_LandingPage.txt).
Please let me know if I can provide any further info.

  • Compatibility_level on SQL Server 2012 in-place upgrade

    Hi all,
Based on BOL, master and user databases' compatibility_level will not be changed to 110 on SQL Server 2012 in-place upgrade.
    Database Compatibility Level After Upgrade
The compatibility levels of the tempdb,
    model, msdb and
Resource databases are set to 110 after upgrade. The
master system database retains the compatibility level it had before upgrade.
If the compatibility level of a user database was 90 or 100 before the upgrade, it remains the same after upgrade. If the compatibility level was 80 or less before upgrade, in the upgraded database, the compatibility level is set to 90, which is the
lowest supported compatibility level in SQL Server 2012.
I get the some result in our environment. So in-place upgrade SQL 2008 instance to SQL 2012 (both standalne and clustered), master/user databases' compatibility_level is 100. I also try to use SQL 2012 new function
    OFFSET and FETCH, it works.
My concern is, whether we have to manually update the compatibility_level to 110? As SQL 2012 new features seem work even with compatibility_level <110, is there any problem if we leave it?
(I didn't find any document about this, and related change metioned as a step for SQL 2012 in-place upgrade.)
    Any thoughts?
    MCSE:Data Platform

So the idea is that if you have applications that are dependent on behaviour that changes, you can stay with the old compat level. I believe that there is some upgrade assistant to investigate whether this applies to you.
On the top of my head, I don't recall any differences between compat levels 100 and 110, but there surely are some. But there are no new reserved keywords as I recall. And some things break even with the old compat level. (COMPUTE BY and the old RAISERROR
syntax for instance.) So I don't think it is particularly brave to change the compatibility level. Change it back if something really breaks.
The risk if you don't change it now, is that you have code developed on a dev server with compat level 110, which breaks when you deploy in production. And this happens one year from now, and no one recalls that this server has compat level 100, so it
causes a lot of confusion and waste of time.

  • Export/Import data in SQL Express 2014

    Hello,
I have SQL Server 2008 on the network server and 'central' DB. To workaround cases when the network is down I decided to implement 'local' design on all clients. Actually I have 5 clients. I installed SQL Express 2014 on each client and created exact as
'central' empty database on each client.
Now during network outage I'm able to continue collect data and populate it in each of 5 db's.
When the network is up again I have to copy/move  collected data from each client to 'central' db. Unfortunately 'central' and 'local' db's are on the different network and can't see each other hence I have to somehow export package from each 'local'
db and then import it into 'central'.
The problem that I hit is that in SQL Express there's not an option to save package i.e. it allow only immediate export which would not work for me.
Do you have an idea how to handle this situation?
    Thanks
    EV

    Hi,
I agree with Ronen and Scott. You can use SQL Server Replication to
    copy the data.
Replication is a set of technologies for copying and distributing data and database objects from one database to another and then synchronizing between databases to maintain consistency. Using replication, you can distribute data to different
locations and to remote or mobile users over local and wide area networks, dial-up connections, wireless connections, and the Internet.
Replication processing resumes at the point at which it left off if a connection is dropped.
Please check out the following links for more information about SQL Server Replication:

  • SSMS Tools with SQL Express 2014

    Hi
Need to know whether SSMS Tools that come along with SQL Express 2014 require client license?  Please let me know the details

SSMS Express is also free in use.
Only when you use SSMS Express to connect to a commercial version, then you need a CAL (Client Access License) or the SQL Server must be licensed by CPU/CORE).
For further question regarding licensing please contact a Microsoft sales partner or licensing expert.

  • SQL Express 2014 on Windows 8.1 Homegroup enviroment

I've installed sql express 2014 on a new windows 8.1 pc. I have opened up the security. This pc is a member of a home group. There are 5 members to this group. No matter which pc I go to, they all fail to connect saying the XXXX\Guest failed. Why is the
Windows 8.1 recognizing all of the users that try to connect as "guests"? When I went into the sql express settings I could see the actual user and made sure they had all the rights, but regardless, going back to that same users pc I get the same
results when trying to connect. What am I missing with windows 8.1 that is causing this behavior? Any help would be appreciated!

    Hello,
Please create a SQL Server login using the following article.
    http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/dhananjaycoder/create-a-sql-login-user-in-sql-server-2008/
Now use that SQL login and the password you provided as the credential to connect from the other PCs. Open SSMS and on the “Connect to Server” dialog choose “SQL Server authentication” instead of “Windows Authentication”, then provide the credentials.
    Hope this helps.

  • Uninstall SQL EXPRESS 2014 ERROR

Hi, i managed to install SQL Express 2014 on Windows 7 Pro SP1 without any problems at all. When i try to uninstall it i get the error message.
"The operating system on this computer or its service pack level does not meet the minimum requirements for SQL Server 2014."
However it installed absolutely fine without issue, why does it not uninstall? Surely uninstalling should have a lower requirement than installing it!
What is the fix or is this yet another MS bug?

    Hello,
Please try to open Command Prompt, go to the folder where setup.exe (SQL Server setup) is located and try to run the following command:
    Setup.exe /Action=Uninstall
Another option is to use the Program Compatibility Assistant on setup.exe.

  • 50L7300 upgrade doesn't work

WOW! I went through 24 pages here and couldn't believe how many different problems were described and hardly any resolution was offered by Toshiba.  I bought this brand and model because others didn't have wired network connection and VGA input that I needed.  I was pretty happy with it, until I heard a buzz at certain voice frequencies during a talk show or documentary.  Although part of the problem was a cable on the back panel touching the TV housing, something in the TV still resonates sometimes.  This is clearly a sound problem, the tech wanted to replace the motherboard. After removing the motherboard he found that Toshiba sent him a different board so he put the original board back.  I bought the TV last November, the warranty expired and now "an upgrade is available” message comes up every time I turn the TV on.  You can select yes or no if you want to do the upgrade.  Needless to say the "upgrade" doesn't work, it downloads the files 100%, starts the "upgrade", blue screen, upgrade in progress, 1%, green light blinks and then nothing happens, the TV is back where it  was before, never completes the supposed "upgrade", no message to that effect. Toshiba can't find a resolution, the Help desk in Manila have no idea, they tell you to leave the TV on for hours during the "upgrade" and they will call you the next day to see if it completed...  You guessed it, he didn't call back and when I called again "JR" said he would tell the supervisor and he would call me back in 20 minutes... Two days later he called back but he had no idea what the solution was. They also gave me the phone numbers of two Toshiba authorized service agents, Video Doctor and Precision TV. When I called the former the tech said that you have to replace the motherboard that costs around $300. The latter would come out and charge $105 just to run diagnostics or $39.99 for a call… Toshiba’s suggested manual USB upgrade didn’t work either and second level support (supervisor) asked me what brand I used and try another brand of USB drive as part of the process of elimination before he can escalate it to the factory engineers..,. I guess their idea of support and problem solving is not the process of elimination but the elimination of process until the customer gets tired and goes away… I will never buy a Toshiba product again, I will stick to the best: Sony, Panasonic or LG…

I totally sympathize with you! I had a very similar experience like a year ago with version 7.whocanremember. I was an idiot and I deleted itunes and had a **** of a time trying to get it reloaded. I had tried to downgrade with zero luck. I don't think you will be able to. When you install that new version you see that little window pops up that says updating library. Have you tried just reinstalling 7.6? That is what I am going to try. I've got an interesting problem that I will probably be posting if a reinstall doesn't fix it. Good luck to you!!

  • Home places + home doesn't work!

I've just set my wife's laptop up with Arch a few days ago and am having a couple of teething issues.
One is that Gnome's places/home doesn't work - I click it and nothing happens.
Any ideas how to troubleshoot or solve?
    Thanks.

    Of course!
I have a 'home' icon plonked on the desktop and made visible in gconf editor which works fine - but cannot access it via the places menu.

When I try to use the Adobe site to contact support my serial number for Lightroom 3 is not valid.
I have seen others with similar problens on the forum and I hope Adobe can fix the problem soon as the program is currently not usable.
I would appreciate if there is a way to go back to version 3.5?

Sorry, I used the term Update instead of Develop because I made a bad

  • SQL 2008 R2 In-Place Upgrade or Fresh Install to SQL2104

We have a server running Windows 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 R2 currently.  We will call it SQL01.  This houses databases for about 8 different applications and also has the name hard coded into a lot,  I repeat, a lot of various things.
We are at the point where one of our applications needs to be upgraded and it only works with SQL 2014.  So we need to either do an in-place upgrade or fresh install.
The obvious choice to me as a system admin is to do a fresh install, but the development side of the department knows how many places the name "SQL01" is hard coded and they want to do an in-place upgrade to avoid all the issues that would show
    up if we changed names.
I have several questions, and I'd appreciate that the answers address them all if possible.
    1.  What are people's experiences with in-place upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014?
    2.  To avoid this naming and coding issue, do companies use a permanent alias for their SQL servers?  Like with exchange, we have an alias or A record pointing "mail" to the current Exchange server.  As we do upgrades and the Exchange
server names change, the "mail" entry will always be pointed to the current one.  Do people do this for SQL as well to avoid our issue of hard coding names?
    3.  I've head that you can also have both SQL 2008 R2 and SQL 2014 on the same server running together.  This really doesn't help though if the SQL 2014 instance would need to be something other than the default which everything is currently pointed
    to correct?
    4.  Is there any advice about a better way to go about this?  Or a better way to do this moving forward?  Other than not hard coding which I can't change now?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Adding to the answers provided above, please consider discontinued features no longer available on SQL Server 2014.
I often see company configuring SQL Server aliases when installing SQL Server on SharePoint environments. You can certainly use DNS or use the following article.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190445.aspx
An in-place upgrade is easier but is difficult to rollback in case something goes wrong. Meanwhile, a side-by-side upgrade provides you more control over what is upgraded, it keeps the legacy server online during the upgrade allowing you to easy rollback if
needed, but is not an automated process and the instance will not keep the same name, requiring you to use aliases or other ways to avoid client redirection.
Since you cannot change the application, go for a side-by-side upgrade and try the DNS alias or the client-side alias as I provided the procedure above.
    Hope this helps.

  • Credentials issue with MS SQL Express 2014

    Hello,
I have kind of simple issue but I failed to resolve it. Here's the issue:
I have SQL Server Express 2014 installed on my PC. I have to use SQL Server authentication. As 'sa' I created login and user e.g. user1. Then as user1 I created DB e.g. db1 and a few tables. Now I could login into db1 as user1 using SQL Server authentication.
This db1 will be used by application e.g. app1. This app1 has configuration file that has all credentials and other connection string things. Well when I start that application it throws error "Can't connect to database". Then I look into log and
see this: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 8. Login failed for user 'user1'. Reason: Password did not match that for the login provided .  Then I could disable credential check in configuration file of app1 and then I don't have problem to start app1.
Then I tried to created ODBC connection and use the same credentials and I succeed to connect. Could some give the idea what could be wrong and I can't connect to db1 from my app1? Thanks

Reset the password of the login, i have already this problem.
Not forget the connection string syntaxe, do not make the space after and before (=) example :
    Server=myServerAddress;Database=myDataBase;User
    Id=myUsername;
    Password=myPassword;
Thanks for suggestion ... but could you please tell me why  to reset login password ( I could use this password successfully when login from Studio i.e. it's correct.
Could you please give me sqlcmd example how to connect to my db1 using connection string. That way I should be able to check which users are capable to login.
N.B. I am planning to play with Trusted Connection because Shanky_621 suggested that value 'false' (like in my case means Windows Authentication). In my case user1 is not Windows user .. it's SQL Authentication user.
    Thanks

  • SQL Express 2014 Global Rules Failure Persists

I have been running afoul of a SQL Server Express 2014 Installation Rule:
This computer does not have a required update for .NET Framework 2.0 or .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 that is needed for a successful installation of .NET Framework 4 and Visual Studio components that are included in SQL Server. To continue, download and install
the required update package from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=196047. A computer restart is required after installing this update.
I have disabled/enabled .NET Framework 3.5 in order to re-install the framework to no avail.
I have attempted to install the .NET Framework 2.0 (for some strange reason) with no luck.
I have attempted using the .NET Framework Clean Up Tool HERE.
I uninstalled and have attempted to install this
    update.
All of this to no avail however. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
