Before thinking about high availability, you need to define your availability requirements (recovery point and recovery time objective.) This should dictate the solution that you will have to implement. If your availability requirements are mission-critical,
I don't think using SQL Server Express Edition would be the right choice to make.

  • SQL Browser not started in SQL Express 2012

I just installed SQL Express 2012 on a Windows Server 2008. I downloaded the advanced 64bit installation file and selected all the options except SSRS. Everything seemed to install successfully including SSMS. I was able to connect to the instance locally
and create a database. However, when I tries to connect from a client PC, I got the "not configured for remote connections" error. I went into Configuration Manager on the server and saw that that SQL Browser was stopped. But the Start Service option
was grayed out. How can I enable SQL Browser?

  • SQL Express 2008 R2 will not start on Windows 7 Home

Ok, This used to work, and then over night my system rebooted and now I cannot start SQL Express 2008 R2 after I have unistalled, and re-installed.   Cleared out the folders and the certificates, changed the Named Pipes configuration and all to
no avail.   Here is my log file.

Also, the link you provided is to Windows Vista, not Windows 7 Home Premium.  However, I did look at the registry setting they said to look at in the link.
    Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
Under the ProfileList subkey, delete the subkey that is named <var>SID</var>.bak.
Note <var>SID</var> is a placeholder for the security identifier (SID) of the user account that is experiencing the problem. The <var>SID</var>.bak subkey should contain a ProfileImagePath registry entry that points to the original profile
folder of the user account that is experiencing the problem.
    Exit Registry Editor.
Looking into my registry for my ProfilesList as mentioned. I have these items.
    S-1-5-19 Folder with Default (Value not set), Flags (REG_DWORD) 0x0000000, ProfileImagePath (REG_EXPANDS_SZ) C:Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, State (REG_DWORD) 0x0000000
    S-1-5-20 Folder with Default (Value not set), Flags (REG_DWORD) 0x0000000, ProfileImagePath (REG_EXPANDS_SZ) C:Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService, State (REG_DWORD) 0x0000000
Then I have an item for each of my three accounts, Administrator, Martin Dahl, and mdahl, All admin Accounts, which has no sid.bak, but a Sid, so not sure how this link helps me either.   Still looking for assistance.  Still not starting.

  • Install SQL Express With MDT 2012 now or wait for SCCM and full SQL Server?

We are planning to get SCCM 2012 R2 in several months and it will come with SQL Server 2012 when it is installed and configured at that time.
If we would like to start experimenting with using a database in MDT 2012 now, can we go ahead and set up a database in SQL Express and start using it  for deployments now or should we wait for SQL server?
Can the database created in standalone MDT 2012 with SQL Express be migrated to SQL Server 2012  and SCCM 2012R2 or would we need to start over with a new database when we get SQL Server and SCCM?

Using SQL Express should be fine.  You can export the database from there and import it into a full SQL Server install later if you want to preserve the content.

  • What should be started and enabled in SQL express 2008 R2? Shared memory, TCP/IP , named pipes, VIA

I copied my Visual Studio 2008 projects to a new computer and am having trouble getting the database to attach to my website to continue with it.
I uninstalled SQL 2005 express and installed SQL 2008 R2 Express.
When I looked in the SQL Server configuration manager, I wasn't sure what should be running and what should be stopped and what protocols should be enabled, etc so I started everything and enabled everything.
However, the SQL Server Agent will not start. Maybe I did something wrong by enabling everything. I have everything to start automatically, and all enabled:
SQL Native Client: I right clicked and opened and under client protocols, have enabled all: Shared memory, TCP/IP , named pipes, VIA
and under SQL Server Network Configuration, I opened that and under there is listed protocols for SQLEXPRESS AND I enabled same things: Shared memory, TCP/IP , named pipes, VIA
When I could not start the SQL Server Agent before from the SQL Server configuration mgr. I went into services and started it that way and it did start. But since I have rebooted, it will not start that way either and I now get this message: Windows could
not start the SQL Server Agent(SQLEXPRESS) Service on local computer. Error 1067
I'm just trying to get my visual studio project working again. Would appreciate any help. Maybe I should uninstall SQL and reinstall 2005??

Windows could not start the SQL Server Agent(SQLEXPRESS) Service on local computer.
As the others already wrote, with SQL Server Express in Version 2008 the "SQL Server Agent" will be installed, but it's not a Feature of the Express Edition and therefore you can't start & use it.
In SQL Server 2005 Express the Agent was completly missing (not installed), therefore you haven't this "issue" before.

  • Sql expression fields - odbc drivers

We are using Crystal 2008 with SAP ECC 6.0, and the database is sql server 2005. We had Integration kit installed. We have developed few reports with this one from ECC 6.0.
My problem is, I am not able to see the SQL EXPRESSION FIELDS in the FIELD EXPLORER of CR 2008. From the replies for my
previous postings in other forums here and from the feed back of Don Williams, I understood there is a problem with odbc drivers.
I checked trying with new report and tried using ODBC(RDO) but found no drivers. The ODBC data source window showing "dBASE Files, Excel Files & MS Access Database" in the data source Names field.
Even from my machine, I checked the ODBC drivers and found only the above three were present in the user DSN tab of ODBC data source administrator window. Shall I have to add ODBC drivers for SQL Native client OR SQL server OR both (FROM THE DRIVERS TAB)?
Will there be any other ODBC is required for SAP INTEGRATION?
What are the steps to resolve this and to activate and use the drivers? so that I can see SQL Expression fields & also "Show sql query".
    BABASHARI

    Hi,
So by establishing the connectivity through the proper transports and authorizations done to CRM, can I build
single report by getting the data from two tables one from ECC and another from CRM?
    >> which then means for SSO you need to configure 2 SAP systems on the BusinessObjects Server
And one more question, If I could not succeed in getting the connectivity through the proper transport & authorization to
CRM, (lack of basis resources) then can I use BAPI / RFC'S to pull the data from CRM into ECC and then into CRYSTAL(as, ECC is working fine with crystal through the integration kit)? Is it a good practice? Thanks in advance.
    >> for CR then the ECC system would become the single point of entry. sure - that would work as well - but shoulnd't be necessary

  • Adding pl/sql expression to application level item

I would like to have an item shared by all pages within my application. My understanding is that I can define an application-level item for this.
I know that for page-level items I can pool a value from the database by putting a pl/sql function into the item's "source value or expression" field and by setting the source type to "pl/sql expression or function".
But I cannot do that for an application-level item. In fact, when I create my application-level item, the properties screen of it has pretty much nothing available to configure. It only has Name, Security, Build Option and Comments.
Please, advise on how I can pool a value from the database for an application-level item.
    thanks
    Boris

    Boris,
Application-level items are items that do not get rendered in HTML. They are for keeping named values in session state only and are available for use throughout the application. However, all page items are available for use throughout the application.
What do you mean by "I would like to have an item shared by all pages within my application. "? If you want an item that gets rendered on every page, create a page 0 and put regions/items on that page.
I don't know what you mean by "pool a value from the database".

  • Problem accessing SQL Express 2008 R2 after VS package install

I've written an application package in Visual Studio 2010 which requires SQL Express 2008 R2. I've also created a separate setup package and set SQL Express as a prerequisite. Everything runs as expected except that after the install on target machine
I do not have adequate permissions in SQL to attach the database or set up the user via SQLCMD script. This happens on WIN 7 and up. I know it is a permissions issue with the default install of SQL but do not know how to otherwise perform the install and make
it work. Looking for someone to walk me through and resolve this issue.

    Hi Zanith,
Actually this forum is to discuss the VS IDE issue.
    >> Everything runs as expected except that after the install on target machine I do not have adequate permissions in SQL to attach the database or set up the user via SQLCMD script
Based on your description, the important issue would be related to the permission, as my understanding, it would be related to the SQL Server setup or configuration.
So my suggestion is that you’d better post this issue to the SQL Server forum.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=sqlgetstarted
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/home?forum=sqlexpress
I also found two cases about the SQL Server permission issue.

Found one article saying you can get this if previous version not fully removed, and to do a repair of the previous version, but as I said I uninstalled it and followed all steps for cleanup, so nothing to repair.

Here is the ERRORLOG file from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log.  At the bottom I am seeing the error you said before was a SAN issue.  I had hoped that issue was only with
SQL 2012, but it appears it is even with 2008?
If that is still the issue, I'm trying to understand if by the articles, if the SAN conflict is an OS issue or an SQL issue?   In other words, is it because the OS is Server 2012?   Or would this still occur if I install SQL
2008 on Server 2008 R2?    I don't know that they will be willing to upgrade the SAN, and I don't really want to fool with a .VHD (virtual disk) as a workaround speaks of.
If you're asking if I did this from your article:  select startup account for Database Engine services as NT Authority\SYSTEM
, I don't recall what I did this last time.  I was doing that the last few days, but I think I didn't switch it to that once, just to see if I would have success.  I don't know if that was this last time or not when I switched it.
Is there anywhere I can check that after the fact?

  • "Disable Check for SQL Express" against SQL Server Agent

    Good afternoon,
Seeing as it has been a know issue for many years now[1],
is there a reason why Microsoft has yet to include a “Disable Check for SQL Express” override (similar to the
Automatic Configuration (& other) monitors) for each of the following objects included in the
    Microsoft SQL Server Management Pack?
SQL Server Agent Windows Service (Monitor)
Discover SQL Server Agent for a DB Engine (Discovery)
This would prevent me from have to continually create overrides
disabling the monitor|discovery each time a new instance of SQL Express is installed in our Management Group.
    Thanks,
    Larry

  • Client access from W7 to Server 2008 with SQL Express 2008 R2 not possible anymore (since installing yesterdays patches)

    Hi everyone!
We are suddenly having Problems to access our SQL Express Server from our Clients (SBS 2008 with W7 clients).
Till yesterday evening everything was working fine. At night we installed the latest MS patches für our Server 2008 (SBS2008).
Since then we are not able to connect to the SQL Express Server over the Network. Locally (on the Server) it runs fine.
Switching the Windows Firewall off on the Server also lets the clients connect ...
The Windows Firewall still has all the ports open needed for SQL Server, we havn't changed anything.
All the incoming rules that worked for years are still there (untouched).
We just deinstalled all the latest patches, but problem still is here ... not sure if this was just a coincidence ...
Any ideas what could be the Problem?
Thanks in advance for your help
    Best regards
    Thomas

    Check firewall rules
enable traffic on TCP 1433 and UDP 1434 (if isn't a named instance) or check sql using ports.
Check Sql Server Browser in Configuration Manager and also net protocols.
    let's know about it
    Best regards,
    P.Ceglie

  • SQL Express 2005

    Hi,
Does anyone know if SAP B1 can run on SQL Express 2005 db. An error occurs when creating the tables for new db. Could it be access rights?
    Thanks.

We have the same problem on a SQL Server 2005 9.00.4035.00.  Windows 2003, SP2.
I am not able to use the SQL Server Configuration Manager or Surface Area Configuration Manager tools.  When I open them, I get the error messages excerpted below:
Configuration Manager:  Cannot connect to WMI provider......The specified module could not be found.
Surface Area Configuration (both options):  .....An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service (Microsoft.sqlserver.smo).  Failed to retrieve data for this request (Microsoft.Sqlserver.SmoEnum)........
This must have happened sometime in the past few weeks, because it worked a few weeks ago.  It works fine on all the other SQL 2005 servers.  If the server is changed to another sql server, using the tool on the problem server, it works fine.  If I log onto another server, and change the tool to point to this problem server, it gives the same error messages.  SQL Services and the WMI service are started.  Rebooting does not affect it.  I tried the mofcomp suggestion with no effect.  None of the suggestions in this thread above have solved this issue.
Do you think reinstalling Client Tools might solve it?  I do not know if these configuration tools are installed with database engine or client tools.

  • SQL Express problem client connection

SQl Express problem, I can't connect another computer.
I have sql express on win xp, and one client win 7 starter. The firewall is disable, I can ping the server computer (win xp pro). On Sql Configuration Manager I enable TCP/IP protocol and named pipes. ODBC local is fine, but remote don't connect.
If anyone has an idea about this
    Felipe Script Center

You hae to enable remote Connections as well, in Express Edition it's disabled by default, see
Configure the remote access Server Configuration Option

  • Connection to SQL Express on Azure VM not working

    Hello,
I'm sorry if this has already been answered somewhere else, I didn't find anything that helped.
    Setup:
Two VMs running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, one running SQL Express.
When trying to connect to the SQL Express, the connection does not work.
Here's what I've done so far:
Set up the MSSQL instance, named SQLEXPRESS
Set up a database, named TESTDB
Set the instance to mixed authentification
Set up VM endpoint TCP 1433
Opened ports TCP 1433, 1434 in the firewall
    Activated the SQL Browser
Activated the TCP/IP-Service in the SQL Server Network Configuration
Testing connection via UDL file with the following information:
    Server name: <cloud storage>.cloudapp.net\<sql server>\SQLEXPRESS
    Username: sa
    Password: <password>
    Database: TESTDB
Now it returns the following error:
"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider.
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied."
Now I keep reading that it may be a firewall problem. But I turned off the firewalls on both servers completely for testing purposes (they're test servers and will be deleted anyway) and it still doesn't work.
I know I must have forgotten something, but what? Or am I entering the wrong connection information?
    Does anyone know?
    Regards
    ~Irolan

    Server name: <cloud storage>.cloudapp.net\<sql server>\SQLEXPRESS
    Hello,
I wonder about the Server Name, it should be "MachineName\SQLEXPRESS" only.

Damn... you're right. That works. Uhm... but what if I want to access it from another computer that is not an Azure VM?
