Sql Loader fails with newline fields

Hi,I have a csv file delimited by "|" which is exported from MS Access. One of the fields contains a newline (e.g. notes column) which sql loader treats as beginning of new record. Can anyone tell me how to force the loader to ignore this newline. Is there a way I can tell the loader to read the optional '"' and continue with the record till it finds a closing '"'? Or is there a way to export data from access an force it to skip newlines and make a flat file with one record per line? I hate fixed length columns since it adds up pain in wrting the control files. Also the loader still fails to read the record if it encounters a newline as discussed above.
Thanks

Unfortunately there is no command that can make sql*loader treat two lines in a text file as one record. Some one asked tom kyte same question, see what he had to say about it:

Why don't you create a staging table where you first load the data, and then from the data inserted into this table populate your original table in the form required.

  • SQL*LOADER(8I) VARIABLE SIZE FIELD를 여러 TABLE에 LOAD하기 (FILLER)

    제품 : ORACLE SERVER
    작성날짜 : 2004-10-29
    ==================================================================
SQL*LOADER(8I) VARIABLE SIZE FIELD를 여러 TABLE에 LOAD하기 (FILLER)
    ==================================================================
    PURPOSE
    ( 8i new feature인 FILLER 절 사용)
    Explanation
    SQL*LOADER SYNTAX
    INTO TABLE emp
    INTO TABLE emp1
    INTO TABLE emp
    (empno POSITION(1:4) INTEGER EXTERNAL,
    INTO TABLE emp1
    (empno POSITION(1:4) INTEGER EXTERNAL,
    Example
    예제 1>
    create table one (
    field_1 varchar2(20),
    field_2 varchar2(20),
    empno varchar(10) );
    create table two (
    field_3 varchar2(20),
    empno varchar(10) );
    << data.txt >> - load할 data file
"this is field 1","this is field 2",12345678,"this is field 4"
    << test.ctl >> - control file
    load data infile 'data.txt'
    discardfile 'discard.txt'
    into table one
    replace
    fields terminated by ","
    optionally enclosed by '"' (
    field_1,
    field_2,
    empno )
    into table two
    replace
    fields terminated by ","
    optionally enclosed by '"' (
    field_3,
    dummy1 filler position(1),
    dummy2 filler,
    empno )
two라는 table에는 dummy1이라는 field는 없으며 position(1)은 current record의
table에 load되었던 employee number는 two라는 table에도 load되는 것이다,

  • SQL*Loader problem with direct path load

    Hi all,
    Its on Oracle 9.2
I have a sqlldr control file which has couple of columns like,
    my_column_1 ,
    my_column_2 "decode(:my_column_1,'ONE','AAA','TWO','BBB', :my_column_1)"
The table I am loading to is in user X and I am running the load from
user Y. Everything works fine with conventional path load (not direct
path) as grants are made for the table to user Y.
When I load the data with same control file with direct path, I get an
    error ,
    01031 - insufficient privileges
Is this anything to do with the syntex I have used in the control file
or its a privilege issue. If its a privilege issue which privilege is
    that ?
    I did following tests,
    1) Load is run with conventional path load, from user Y and the decode
statement is in control file - Load works
    2) Load is run with direct path load, from user Y and decode statement
is in control file - Load fails with above mentioned error
    3) Load is run with direct path load, from user Y and decode IS REMOVED
from the control file - Load works (!!!)
What can be the conclusion? Way out ?
    Thanks and Regards

    You need to grant
    grant lock any table to userY;

    any idea?

It is very difficult to resolve a problem which can not be seen.it is true becoz i did not get any error
To get 'expert advice' you would need to do what you could have done yourself:i have spend almost 5 five hour before putting question here
compare and/or post the sql*loader control file (which we are not to see)i have mentioned in my post that i used same control file for both. bu jsut changing the name of input file in control file
and to look up the error message onlinecould you plz let me know which error should i look for online?
what i did before putting question here. i have merge the both bad and loaded file again and load it separately. both load remain successful.

  • SQL*Loader and "Variable length field was truncated"

    Hi,
I'm experiencing this problem using SQL*Loader: Release 8.1.7.0.0
Here is my control file (it's actually split into separate control and data files, but the result is the same)
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    APPEND INTO TABLE test
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY ','
    OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'
    first_id,
    second_id,
    third_id,
    language_code,
    display_text VARCHAR(2000)
    begindata
    2,1,1,"eng","Type of Investment Account"
The TEST table is defined as:
    Name Null? Type
    FIRST_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(4)
    SECOND_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(4)
    THIRD_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(4)
    LANGUAGE_CODE NOT NULL CHAR(3)
    DISPLAY_TEXT VARCHAR2(2000)
    QUESTION_BLOB BLOB
    The log file displays:
Record 1: Warning on table "USER"."TEST", column DISPLAY_TEXT
    Variable length field was truncated.
And the results of the insert are:
    FIRST_ID SECOND_ID THIRD_ID LANGUAGE_CODE DISPLAY_TEXT
2 1 1 eng ype of Investment Account"
The language_code field is imported correctly, but display_text keeps the closing delimiter, and loses the first character of the string. In other words, it is interpreting the enclosing double quote and/or the delimiter, and truncating the first two characters.
    I've also tried the following:
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    APPEND INTO TABLE test
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY '|'
    first_id,
    second_id,
    third_id,
    language_code,
    display_text VARCHAR(2000)
    begindata
    2|1|1|eng|Type of Investment Account
In this case, display_text is imported as:
    pe of Investment Account
In the log file, I get this table which seems odd as well - why is the display_text column shown as having length 2002 when I explicitly set it to 2000?
Column Name Position Len Term Encl Datatype
    FIRST_ID FIRST * | O(") CHARACTER
    SECOND_ID NEXT * | O(") CHARACTER
    THIRD_ID NEXT * | O(") CHARACTER
    LANGUAGE_CODE NEXT 3 | O(") CHARACTER
    DISPLAY_TEXT NEXT 2002 VARCHAR
Am I missing something totally obvious in my control and data files? I've played with various combinations of delimiters (commas vs '|'), trailing nullcols, optional enclosed etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Use CHAR instead aof VARCHAR
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    APPEND INTO TABLE test
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY ','
    OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'
      first_id,
      second_id,
      third_id,
      language_code,
      display_text    CHAR(2000)
    )From the docu:
    A VARCHAR field is a length-value datatype.
It consists of a binary length subfield followed by a character string of the specified length.
