SQL*Plus username/password
**While leaving the host name blank, I've tried to use the following username/password combinations to no avail:
scott/tiger
system/manager
**I always receive this error message:
ORA-12560 TNS:protocol adapter error
**When I looked that error message up with a quick internet search, I came upon this information:
What causes this error?
This message indicates that there is a problem at the protocol adapter level. That is, SQL*Net and the Interchange are functioning correctly, but there is something wrong with the protocol adapter that underlies them.
How to fix it
Check addresses used for proper protocol specification. Before reporting this error, look at the error stack and check for lower level transport errors. For further details, turn on tracing and re-execute the operation. Turn off tracing when the operation is complete or you will use a lot of disk space. The trace file will have details of the problem.
You may get this error running Oracle 8.1.6 under Win2000 when you try to log in using 'svrmgrl'. You can normally connect using SQL*Plus or any other product, svrmgrl is going to be discontinued.
**I'm not terribly sure what the "how to fix it" intructions mean. I'd appreciate any help in trying to figure that out.I downloaded the database and received the same error message. What do you mean by that? You cannot just download a database. You can download the Oracle server software, install it, and create a database.
Are you on a network with a database already installed somewhere on that network? In that case, ask the DBA to make your connection to that database.
can you tell me more about tools that support PL/SQL?PL/SQL is supported in the Oracle database, Forms, Reports, web pages can be created with it etc. You really need to have an idea what you want to do. Oracle is so complex, that you cannot just start somewhere. -

Oracle/ SQL Plus Username and Password troubles
Hello all
I have just download Oracle Database 10g Express Edition for Linux.
I downloaded it through the repositories and it installed it that way.
When i use the command 'connect' with SQL Plus i am required to enter a user name ans password.
What is the default user name and password, or where can i find it?
Many thanksIf yo uinstalled it, you needed to provide a password. Use that.
For your amusement, there is an install doc that guides you through the steps properly. Check out http://www.oracle.com/pls/xe102/homepage -
Oracle 8i Lite: logging to sql plus - uid, password, host string - whats that
If i install "Oracle 8i Lite" (just locally, not networked). There are two important things : "Navigator", and "SQL Plus". If in navigator, I create a local database called "xxx" (tables under 'system' user). Then if i need to query - i go to SQL Plus. Fine, but how do we log in - what is the "host string" ?.
The login needs, Userid, Password, Host String. In some docs, it said the userid, password for 'system' account is 'system, manager' respectively. Anyways, now the host string , i had read the 'host string' will be like "@databasename", so I think for me, it will be "@xxx"
But the way, I'm understing, i cant log, and SQL Plus says something "TNS: could not resolve service name". Maybe i have to something with that tnsnames.ora file....?
Incase, you could give ANY information, kindly inform.
Thanks

Host string usually refers to the host string that is stored in your TNSNAMES.ORA file. You can open TNSNAMES.ORA with a text editor.
If you get "TNS: could not resolve service name", it's either you have not start the database or your configuration in TNSNAMES.ORA is wrong.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
hi,
iam getting the same error(the TNS thing)can you be a bit more explaining regarding how to solve the problem.

How do I access APEX tables from SQL DEVELOPER?
What do I use as a USERNAME and PASSWORD--
inside SQL DEVELOPER?
Hello,
I have APEX installed on my machine.
WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL 64 BIT.
I also have installed:
ORACLE XE
and
SQL DEVELOPER.
I have applications I have created in APEX
with various tables.
Question:
How can I access my APEX tables from
within SQL DEVELOPER?
What USERNAME and PASSWORD do I use?
I can do this with
HR
SQL DEVELOPER USERNAME = HR
PASSWORD = HR
This works fine.
But what about for my own APEX TABLES
I created inside my own workspace
inside APEX?
For example:
LOGIN TO APEX:
http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/
If my
APEX WORKSPACE = DAVID_WS
SCHEMA = DAVID_SC
APEX USERNAME = DAVIDAPEX_UN
APEX PASSWORD = DAVIDAPEX_PW
LOGIN TO APEX ADMIN:
http://localhost:8080/apex/apex_admin
APEXADMIN USERNAME = DAVIDADMIN_UN
APEXADMIN PASSWORD = DAVIDADMIN_PW
So, given the above 6
NAMES and PASSWORDS above:
SQL DEVELOPER USERNAME = ????
SQL DEVELOPER PASSWORD = ????
Thanks a lot for your help!
David
Edited by: DAVID888 on Feb 3, 2011 11:53 PMHello david,
When you created your workspace with the below details, if the schema "DAVID_SC" was created through APEX, then you should have also specified the password as well.
APEX WORKSPACE = DAVID_WS
SCHEMA = DAVID_SC
APEX USERNAME = DAVIDAPEX_UN
APEX PASSWORD = DAVIDAPEX_PWIf you dont remember the password for "DAVID_SC", you can log on to your Oracle XE database as a "SYSTEM" user and reset the password of "DAVID_SC".
Once that is done, you can log on to SQL developer with :
username : david_sc
password : <your_new_password>
Hope it is clear and plz refer to the APEX documentation to get a better understanding of it. -
SQL Plus username and password
I have downloaded Oracle 10g from a CD I received in my Oracle Developer Book and I can't do any of the chapter assignments, because it is asking me for username and password. I have registered at the oracle website and received a keycode, but it never asked me to enter the keycode when downloading the software and I was NEVER asked to set up a username and password. I need help!!! I need to use this in class. What can I do????
Ask your teacher? If you're working in a class, hands-on help from an experienced teacher will be much more useful than anything you'll get here.
I don't know what version of Oracle 10g you are trying to work with. Is it Express Edition (XE)? Is it Enterprise Edition or Standard Edition (EE or SE)?
I don't use XE, so I can't comment on that in details. But generally, whenever you install Oracle, you'll be asked, as part of the installation, to supply a password for the SYS and SYSTEM user accounts. The relevant page of the installation wizard usually gives you the option of supplying one password for all built-in accounts or supplying a different password for each.
So: at least half your question can be answered by saying a workable username will be "sys" or "system". But I can't tell what password you supplied during the software installation itself.
It's got nothing to do with the password you supplied to be able to download the software, though. That's your OTN username and password, giving you access to this site and others. Nothing whatsoever to do with operating an Oracle database. -
i install in my computer the oracle9i
my problem is that : i can login to sql plus
althoge i was tring all the passwords that i know
scott/tiger
sys/change_on_install
system/manager and the result is allways the same
ora-12560 error
how can i solve that problem?
did i missed somthing during the installation?Thank you to EVERYONE!!
I have been searching every possible forum to find out how to install/run SQL *Plus on a home computer without a server/network to work within. As most just learning, I could not figure out how to get past the SQL Plus Username/Password/Host String logon.
After much trial and error, I got through and I hope this helps a lot of people just starting out.
I used 'SYSTEM' as my username and my password created on install.
When installing I created a database and fixed the password so my default password was the password I created on install.
As long as I had those two fields filled in, I could leave the Host String blank and I could still get into the SQL Plus workspace.
Since I also created a database on install, I found that I could also use the name I gave the installed database (I didn't leave the default database name so I do not remember what the default name was, but I think the default password was 'manager' for those who were not tempted to change it).
Worst case scenario if you forgot your database name given during install, you can do a search for all of your .ora files (usually in the drive you installed Oracle on). Open the tnsnames.ora file in Notepad and you can see which database names are available on your system. The path to my file was:
D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
You want the SERVICE_NAME = 'databasename'
I hope this reduced someone's stress...and thanks for all the helpful hints on these threads...they led me to the final outcome!!
In the end, I tried a lot of other combinations for the username/host strings with plenty of errors. You would think this information would be on page one of every Oracle install!! Or maybe it is and I am just a bit slow. : )
Thanks again to all that posted with this initial question (years ago)...

Automatic start of sql*plus
Hi,
whenever i click the icon sql*plus i get a screnn saying "username", "password", "hoststring".
I heard that, just by clicking the icon the command screen opens asking for just the password.
how do i do it that way ???
cheers,
AJHi AJ,
One way to do that is to create a shortcut for sqlplus.exe and edit the target.
Let's say target is now
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\BIN.sqlplus.exe
Then change to it to
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\BIN.sqlplus.exe < username>[<password>][@<connect_identifier>]
Where you put in your own values for username connect_identifier (and maybe password)

Username password works in SQL Plus not in SQL Developer
I have SQL Dev 1.2.1. It works fine with some databases, but with two databases with logons managed by Oracle Enterprise User it does not work. I receive an Ora 01017 error invalid username password. The user name and password work fine from SQL Plus and from a third party tool. I have a local developer client environment installed, so am using TNS. SQL Developer was installed before the client environment. I was not trying to access this database before the client environment install. I was using the basic connection before the client install. Neither basic or TNS connection works for this particular database.
Any ideas? We have changed the password and it still does not work. There are no special characters in the password.
I am tempted to think the problem is the jdbc driver versions. The logon for Enterprise user controlled databases stopped working after I installed the thick client Oracle developer. I have tried to find the threads with information on disabling the thick client jdbc but have not found them. I also have tried to enter a URL for the thin client without success. One of our DBAs is saying that the 11g clients are broken and he is in communication with Oracle about it. He says 10g works but 11g does not.
Any further help would be appreciated.

What are the defaul username and password for SQL Plus ?
hello, what are the defaul username and password for SQL Plus ? i'm using the client 11.2.0.1
You'll need to download the full database installation files for the platform you are using. They are two .zip files, about 2.2 gig total.
I'm not going to give you the link because you should be able to find it easily. You have to read and accept the license agreement anyway.
When you install it, you'll be given several options about the type of database you want.
But before you install anything, you should read the installation manual for your platform. -

Did you start your Oracle service before trying to connect?
Are you able to run your listener successfully?
did you setup a TNSNAMES entry for your database?
did you try connecting to the database by using scott/tiger@<tnsnames entry> -
