SQL Server 2005 upgrade & migrate to 2012 method

Hi,
The situation is like this:
Currently I have SQL Server 2005 on an old Windows Server 2003. The target is to let SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2012 with the databases migrated over. The new server with Windows Server 2012 was prepared.
Originally my plan is to install SQL Server 2005 on the new Windows Sever 2012 first, migrate the database from old server to here, then upgrade SQL Server to 2012. Then found out this method cannot be used due to SQL Server 2005 is not compatible with Windows
Server 2012.
Alternative suggestions are appreciated.

SQL Server 2012 supports upgrade from the following versions of SQL Server:
SQL Server 2005 SP4 or later
SQL Server 2008 SP2 or later
SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 or late
So please make sure that your existing sql server 2005 is upgraded to SP4 or later.
Then best way is use side by side.
Windows Sever 2012 on you new machine and sql server 2012.
Then use side by side method to migrate your old sql 2005 to new version 2012, ( moving backups and restore, logins, jobs, packages, configurations, maintenance plans,
linked server details and more. )
If you use in-place the in case of any issues we cant do anything to bring back the server to old version or fixing the issue may take lot of time. side by side its matter of navigating the connection and changing the connection setting for application and
putting databases for use ( online from single user or may be from online to online )

  • Migrate biztalk 2006R2/SQL server 2005 projects to Biztalk 2013/SQL server 2012

  • DataBase Migration from SQL server 2005 to SQL server 2012

What are the challenges and steps to be taken care for proper migration of the Database.
Applications are using the Visual Studio 2012.
    saikalyan

Few things that I can think of -
Verify all logins and users are migrated correctly.
Some of the SQL Server 2005 features/code could be deprecated in SQL Server 2012. Changes could be required before or after migration.
Some of the queries could have different performance (better or worse) on 2012 due to changes in query optimizer.
The applications/SSIS/DTS config files are updated to use the new server/instance name.
DNS alias names from the old servers (if used) are moved to the new server to have minimal impact on connection strings.
Plan for downtime of applications and batch processes.
Notify developers about the migration and the new server name(s)

  • Restoring a SQL Server 2005 DB to a SQL Server 2014 install, is there any way to prevent it from being upgraded

Does anyone know if there is a flag I can use to prevent a SQL Server 2005 database from being upgraded to SQL 2014 when it is restored to a 2014 instance?
Don't ask why, I just need to know if this is possible or if 2005/8 DB's are required to be upgraded if they are going to run on SQL 2012/2014 instances. The documentation seems to say this is so, I just want to verify that.

First: You cannot directly restore a 2005 database to
2014. MS supports migration over 3 SQL Server version steps; means you can restore 2005 to 2008/2008R2/2012, but not to 2014. You have to do a migration step between.
Olaf I was looking for this today, because I'm working with a new customer that have SQL 2005 and I have SQL 2014. And needed to restore a backup form the production server in my test server.
When I read what you write I think, oh no!! I have to install SQL 2012 in my server. But that it's not an option for me, and I say let me try to restore the DB first in 2014 and if not work install 2012.
You can restore a 2005 database to 2014 directly, and it works.
For reference the version number in the servers 2005 (9.0.4035 SP3) and 2014 (12.0.2000 RTM)
This is not related in any way to the original question that you answered (the file format will be upgraded to the new motor, that is sure).
I put this lines because in the future there will be some people searching about if possible to restore a 2005 DB to 2014, and like me will read your lines and think it's not possible and that can make a decision to buy 2012 and not 2014 to that new server they
    will migrate.

There are more detailed logs for the various components. The one of interesting is the one for the engine or possibly the one for full-text.
These logs are extremely verbose, and the errors are rarely crystal clear, but at least give them a try. If you have problems, find a place to upload them (Dropbox, Skrydrive etc), so that we can look.
The closest at hand is that "group" that cannot be found is an AD group.

  • Migration from of database and app from SQL server 2005 to Oracle 10g

    Hello Every body,
Lately, I have been requested to migrate one inhouse developed hub application from SQL server 2005 to Oracle 10g. The objective is to move application and also the database to Oracel 10g.
    Here is the current platform:
    OS Win 2008 64 bit
    JDK 1.4.2
    JBoss 3.2.5
    EJB 2.1
My question is what kind of issues you guys see in above upgrade. As far I know, Schema and Database migration can be done by Oracle workbench. Oracle 10g supports JDK 1.4. Oracle 10g also supports EJB 2.1.
Anything, I need to take into consideration or any risks or problems. I would like to list down all the risks, and accordingly, I am thinking of start the upgrade.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Zeeshan Qureshi

In general the Java/J2EE application needs work in the following categories:
    1. Connection Settings: Use Oracle JDBC drivers, create new data sources, connection pools and what not. Disable AUTOCOMMIT for Oracle JDBC Connections.
    2. For EJBs, you should regenerate the entity beans because some object names/column names might have changed in oracle.
    3. Any custom SQL that is in use in the EJBs will have to be ported to Oracle just as you would do in stored procedures and other applications.
    4. For Java front-ends, if you are using callouts to stored procedures and expecting result sets then they will require some changes. You need to modify the stored procedure call signature to include the REF CURSOR variables and process them.
    5. Changes to any SQL Server specific database functions manipulating character/date data will be required.
    6. CLOB/BLOB/XML apis are different across databases so if you are using those then focus on them as well.
    7. Retreiving Auto/generated keys from database also may need changes from what I have seen.
    Hope this helps..

  • SQL Server 2005 huge data migration. Taking more than 18 hours ...

    Hi,
We are migrating an SQL server 2005 DB to Oracle 10 g 64 bit 10.2.0.5. The source sql server DB has few tables (<10) and only few stored procedure(<5). However one table of source is very huge, it has 70 million records in it. I started the migration process; it was running till 18 hours passed away then I cancelled it. I am using SQL Developer 3.1.0.7 with online migration.
Kindly let me know if I choose offline migration will it reduce the data move time. Is there some other tool by oracle that can migrate huge data (records in millions) quickly. Is there some configuration in SQL Developer that can catalyses the process?
    Kindly help.
    Best Regards!
    Irfan

I tried using SQL Loader to move data. The file exported by SQL server for the transaction table is of size around 17 GB. The sql loader stopped giving error on file size limit. The error is given below:
    SQL*Loader: Release 10.2.0.5.0 - Production on Thu Mar 22 15:15:28 2012

Please help me out how do I move such huge data to oracle from sql server.

  • Sql server 2005 in server 2012 domain

    Hello,
I am running sql server 2005, in a 2003 domain.  I plan to possibly upgrade domain/servers to 2012, but am thinking it may create issues with sql 2005?
    1. Can sql server version 2005 (32-bit) run ok in a 2012 server domain?
    2. If not, will it run ok, if I leave 2003 servers (running mixed mode) until sql 2005 is upgraded?
    Thank you
    Robert

    1. Can sql server version 2005 (32-bit) run ok in a 2012 server domain?
    No  & May be.
No if you are trying to have multiple version of SQL Server on server ,as per this
    article
SQL Server 2005 (the release version and service packs) and earlier versions of SQL Server are not supported on Windows
Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, or Windows 8. You will receive a warning in the Action Center if Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 detects an instance of SQL Server 2005.
May be, if you just want to have single instance of SQL Server 2005 on server 2012. Check this:
How to install SQL Server 2005 on Windows 8
    2. If not, will it run ok, if I leave 2003 servers (running mixed mode) until sql 2005 is upgraded?
To be able to answer this question in a better way, may I know your SQL Server 2005 version and to which version you want to upgrade? Check for the
    supported version and editor upgrade
before going for upgrade along with there hardware and software requirements.
Glad to help! Please remember to accept the answer if you found it helpful. It will be useful for future readers having same issue.

  • Upgrade SQL Server 2000to SQL Server 2005 in an SAP environment

    Hi,
I have a scenario in which we are going to upgrade SQL server 2000 to SQL server 2005 in SAP an environment.
Now SQL server has a concept of In-Place Upgrade and Side-by-Side Migration Process.I want to know what does both of these mean.
We have an SAP note(799058.It talks about the upgrade in Step II.Is it the same as In-Place Upgrade concept in SQL?
What is step III in the note talking about? Is it talking about Side-by-Side Migration?
It would be of gr8 help if someone could provide the conceptual knowledge on these and what does the note mentioned above talks.

    Hello
Please review my post on SQL upgrade.
    SAP on SQL Server
You may also like to review

Can you please advise your DB size and the max. amount of downtime your business can afford?
I will check, but I am almost sure that a side-by-side SQL upgrade is not appropriate for SAP systems.

  • Upgrade from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server Express 2014 Enterprise

I was just wondering if it is possible to upgrade from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server Express or will I have to build the environment and then migrate the database?
    Thanks for any help

    Hi Lance_Romance,
As others’ posts, you don’t have to build new environment and then migrate databases between SQL Server instances, you can use the in-place upgrade strategy to upgrade from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2014 .Please note that SQL Server 2005 SP4 is required
    in this case.
Before upgrading , I recommend you to use
upgrade advisor, it can help to analyze your existing SQL Server deployment and inform you of issues that need to be addressed.  In addition, please perform a full server backup prior to performing the in-place upgrade, which will be an important way
to revert your SQL Server to its previous state if the upgrade does not go as planned. For more details, please review this blog:

It depends on how you want migrate, in-place or side-by-side?
In-place: Run a backup of all databases and then install the new SQL Server version
Side-by-side: Install the new SQL Server, backup all database of old SQL Server and restore them on the new one. Then copy all logins from old to new server.

  • Migrate SQL Server 2005 database to 2008r2

    Hi
We have SQL Server 2005 in 32 bit machine, We are planning to move to SQL Server 2008r2 in 64 bit machine(Virtual Environment) . Planning to do side by side migration. I was wondering what approach would be best way to
copy user db, login information ,jobs and maintenance plan to New environment.
    thanks for help.

    Hello,
You can use backup/restore or detach/copy/attach methods to migrate those databases. Look at the following resource to
    consider these and other options.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sreekarm/archive/2009/09/11/move-a-database-from-one-server-to-another-server-in-sql-server-2008.aspx
Transfer logins using the following article.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918992
To transfer jobs, you can script them or use SSIS.
