SQL Server 2012 - RESOURCE MONITOR / PREEMPTIVE_XE_CALLBACKEXECUTE high CPU usage
Hello,
We are currently in the process of migrating an existing clustered SQL Server 2008 R2 instance over to a clustered SQL Server 2012 instance as we phase out the Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2008 R2.
The setup is identical for the SQL Server 2012 instance as it is on the SQL Server 2008 R2 instance. (meaning the RAM and CPU are both the same or better on the SQL Server 2012 instance)
The process in which we are migrating is that we're moving a few databases over to the new SQL Server 2012 instance each night. What we've noticed is that the CPU usage is much higher on the SQL Server 2012 instance than on the previous
SQL Server 2008 R2 instance even though the there is only 1/2 of the databases migrated to the 2012 instance.
Running the following script:
;with cte ([totalCPU]) as (select sum(cpu) from master.dbo.sysprocesses)
select
tblSysprocess.spid
, tblSysprocess.cpu
, CONVERT(BIGINT,(tblSysprocess.cpu * CONVERT(BIGINT,100))) / CONVERT(BIGINT, cte.totalCPU) as [percentileCPU]
, tblSysprocess.physical_io
, tblSysprocess.memusage
, tblSysprocess.cmd
, tblSysProcess.lastwaittype
from master.dbo.sysprocesses tblSysprocess
cross apply cte
order by tblSysprocess.cpu desc
Produces the following results:
In a clustered environment, is this normal and if not, does anyone know what this means or how to reduce the CPU usage?
Thanks.
Hello,
The following query may help us identify extended events or audit configurations running on that SQL Server server that are producing that high CPU usage scenario.
SELECT
s.name
AS 'Sessions'
FROM
sys.server_event_sessions
AS s
WHERE
s.name
<> 'system_health'
and s.name
<> 'AlwaysOn_health';
Hope this helps.

Sql Server 2012 Integration Services Catalog views - cpu usage history
Hi,
I am new to SQL Server 2012. I have deployed and executed a SSIS package on the Integration Services catalog.
Now, to analyze the performance of the executed package I wish to query the SSISDB catalog views to retrieve the cpu & memory usage history. Please let me know in which catalog view/table I can find this info.
There is a column named "Process_Id" in the "catalog.operations" table. Can we tie this id to the Sql Server pid/kid and then retrieve the cpu
usage history ?
** I am using Sql Server 2012 **
ThanksHi All,
Thanks all for your inputs. One final question -
As I mentioned earlier, the Sql Server 2012 catalog views
DO NOT capture various performance metrics
(e.g. cpu usage history, memory usage history etc) of
an executing SSIS package . However, I am cognizant of the fact that it is possible to retrieve this exact info
(ie. cpu usage history, memory usage history etc) for
a Sql-Server internally generated SPID (present in [sys].[dm_exec_sessions]).
The approach is to find a way to join/relate the catalog provided "Process_id" to the Sql Server generated internal SPIDs in a session. If I am successful in joining these 2 process ids together,
it will allow me to gather all the information available from both sides - ie the catalog views + the sql-server internal process SPIDs of the session. Thus, by tagging the SSIS pprocess_id to
its sql-server session it will allow to retrieve the resource usage details by the executed SSIS process.
**Please also let me know if the above could be achieved by any other approach.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks -
SQL Server 2012 AlwaysON Monitoring using SCOM
Team,
We have SCOM deployed and is serving as a monitoring solution for our SQL Estate. However I want some pointers to monitor the health of DBs within Avaialibility Group like DB Sync, log queue etc. Please direct me with the AlwaysOn health parameters that
can be monitored by SCOM.
I have confirmed with SCOM admin that we have the latest management pack installed for SQL 2012 and currently its getting monitored. However we are not seeing any alerts though.
Your inputs are highly appreciated.

Can SQL Server 2012 witness monitor a 2008 R2 database.
Hi
I was wondering if it was possible for a sqlserver 201witness to monitor databases running sqlserver 2008R2. I am also curious to know about the vice versa possiblity.
ThanksThe two partners, that is the principal server and mirror server, must be running the same edition of SQL Server. The witness, if any, can run on any edition of SQL Server that supports database
mirroring.
See prerequisites section from below link:

How to backup/restore credentials in sql server 2012
Hi, Can any one direct how to restore credentials using T-sql or GUI on SQL Server 2012.
As per BOL, we know how to create credentials.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189522.
But looking for taking backup/restore credentials sql serve 2012.
ThanksHi,
I highly recommend to go from step 1 to the end in this tutorial, but if you realy want to just only to restore than you can start in Lesson 4: Perform a Restore From a Full Database Backup

Datastore config to connect Readonly SQL Server 2012
We upgrade our source database server from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2012 Always On with High Availability model. There is a read-only mirror db server in this availabilty group.
We plan to use the read-only node for etl sources. In a oledbb connection string, we can connect the read-only instance by adding "ApplicationIntent=READONLY" string but i can not find any property in SAP BO Dataservices - data store object.
How can i connect to read-only instance with Data services 4.1.
Sample atl of a datastore object:

#__AW_Product_Version '14.1.1.354';
#__AW_ATL_Locale 'tur_tr.utf-8';

Thanks for your helpThis is not about the security. There are two replicated sql servers. One of them is working read / write and one of them is working in read-only mode. We plan to decrease read load by connecting the read-only instance. But we do not know which server is read-only, sql server manages it.
If i can use oledb connection i can reach the read-only instance by adding ApplicationIntent=READONLY statement in connection string.
I'd like to know that i can connect to read-only instance of sql server in Data services. -
We have recently upgraded from SQL server 2008 to SQL server 2012.
We are getting this error when browsing to several pages on our website.
There is insufficient system memory in resource pool 'internal' to run this query
Most of the pages just try to do sql statements or stored procedures. I found a fix related to this error for sql 2012
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2769594/en-gb
I did install it on server but the problem still remains.
I have increased Maximum server memory to 20 GB to see if it will affect but it didnt.
Memory on server is 32GB
This is the sql version we have

Mainly we have SQL and IIS on server -
While installing sql server 2012 with failover clustering I got the following error:
The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online. Error: There was a failure to call cluster code from a provider. Exception message: Generic failure. Status code: 5942. Description: The resource failed to come online due to the failure of one
or more provider resources.
The two nodes of the sql server failover have been successfully prepared. The error came while running the advance cluster completion option.
In the clustered events in failover cluster manager the following message is displayed:
Cluster resource 'SQL Network Name (CPCTestSQLClus)' of type 'Network name' in clustered role 'SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)' failed.
I have done various checking and the issue remained. I tried to start the sqlPlease find below part of the content of the cluster log. I hope this is helpful in resolving the issue:

Found that all the SQL servers are getting monitored, expect few servers which are having SQL server 2012 role.
proxy is enabled for these servers, when I checked discovered inventory for SQL 2012 database unable to find these servers in that list.
and other servers having SQL Server 2012 monitoring properly issue is with only few servers.Hi,
thanks for the all the input, we are using service account as windows account instead of action account !!
will that also affect discovery of SQL role?
and also found that there are many alerts in SCOM console, with alert description :
SQL Server cannot authenticate using Kerberos because the Service Principal Name
(SPN) is missing, misplaced, or duplicated.
please let me know how we can resolve this issue, will it affect SQL discovery as well ? -
Transaction Log Truncate not working on Sql Server 2012 High Availability Groups
Hi Everyone
Firstly I have tried to search the forum for similar issues but can't seem to find any that match our situation.
We have a SQL Server 2012 High Availability Group with 2 Nodes
Node 1 = Primary
Node 2 = Secondary
Backup Schedule as follows
Full Database Backup @ 00:00
Transaction Log Backup every 30 minutes from 00:30:00 till 23:59:59.
These backups are run by Maintenance Jobs, but we have also tried doing direct backups in SSMS using Backup Database and Backup Log commands.
Before we configured the High Availability group the transaction log backups worked fine.
After we configured the High Availability group we performed a Full Backup and the T-Log schedule did the T-Log backup. The 1st T-log backup truncated the log (Used space Decreased) as expected.
However subsequent T-Log backups do not truncate the T-Log.
This happens both in our acceptance and Live environments. This also happens when running the backups as a Backup operator and sysadmin, this does not seem to be a permissions issue at all.
We have tried running the Backup on the Primary and Secondary Replica.
What about High Availability groups could stop Transaction Log Backups from not truncating the log?
Thanks
JamesHi Sean
Thank you for your reply, please see the output of the sys.databases query below, and some others which you may find usefull.
Query: select database_id,recovery_model_desc, log_reuse_wait, log_reuse_wait_desc from sys.databases
where database_id = 5
Result: database_id recovery_model_desc log_reuse_wait log_reuse_wait_desc

Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone is monitoring SQL Server 2012 with Grid Control. We are using Grid Control 11g and I can't get it to work. Oracle Support tell me its not certified with 11g or 12c ... so just wondering if anyone has got it to work anyway....
thanksThe latest available version of the plug-in i.e. 12.1.0.2. doesn't support Sql server 2012. Please wait till version version 12.1.0.3 is out along with the latest version of EM 12c platform PS2 i.e. 12.1.0.3

CF 10 sp 12 Enterprise high CPU usage hangs services, 2012 server on 2012 Hyper-V host
The last 2 days - my [removed link] CF site has suffered from high CPU usage (on and off) that stops functionality.
This will last several minutes then suddenly the high usage stops a few minute later the high cpu usage starts again.
I don't have any scheduled processes allowed to run.
Restarting the coldfusion service during a high CPS incident - the cpu usage just picks up where it left off when restarted.
I have assigned 4 CPUs (normal) or 8CPUs (as a test) to the VM and I get the same high CPU then low usage. This is a fresh install several months ago on a new VM.
I'd like some Adobe support on this issue but can't seem to find the contact phone number.
This series of high and low cpu usage first started Monday AM about midnight until 7:00 AM Tuesday was quiet and Wednesday this AM I'm having the same issues.
Ideas?
Update: While waiting for this to post - the high CPU usage started again and this time I stopped and restarted the Jetty service ... and the CPU usage went away...
Update: the high cpu started again and a restart of the jetty service didn't help --- neither did the .net service restart... the cf10 application service did stop the high usage...

GCviewer shows that the full GCcollections suddenly start firing off many times in a short period of time.

High CPU Usage On client application when upgrade remote SQL database
Hi,
Is anyone here encountered very high CPU usage after upgraded the database from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012? Following describes my issue.
I have my client application running on Windows 7 that access to central database (SQL 2005) on Windows server 2003 using ODBC connection, this client application basically query data and perform data insert and update. There are a number of this similar
clients connected to the database.
Due to slowness of the database server, company decided to upgrade the database server to SQL 2012 and also new hardware runing Windows Server 2012. There is no change on the client application and client hardware and the client application still using the
same ODBC connection to query, insert or update the new database server.
The problem I am now experiencing now is that my client PC where my client application running the CPU usage is very high almost hitting 100% when accessing to the central database. I am also noticed this program lsass.exe that utilized almost 40-50% of
the CPU time when client application accessing the central database.
Is anyone here know, why client PC CPU usage 100% when access to upgraded SQL 2012 database? What is lsass.exe program doing, it only appear when accessing to database server. How to reduce the CPU usage on client?
Thanks.
Chee Wee.Hello,
After upgrading, please rebuild indexes and update statistics on the databases.
http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1367/sql-server-script-to-rebuild-all-indexes-for-all-tables-and-all-databases/
http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1606/execute-update-statistics-for-all-sql-server-databases/
Configure maxdop on the instance.

If the above does not solve the issue, let us know.
Hope this helps.

Symptom: When you install Reporting Service Point role on a Site System Server running SQL Server
2012 SP1, you may encounter an issue that the Reporting Service Point role cannot be installed. The error log “srsrpMSI.log” and “srsrpsetup.log” may throw the error as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.

Reason: All the two logs indicate an error return code 1618. From the KB below you may know what
the return code means.

Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install.

You can look into Resource Manager and Event Viewer to find the other currently running MSI installation. You may get a warning in Event Log that means the MSI wants to install a SQL Server
related Component (Figure 3). The Resource Manager confirms this (Figure 4).

After we resolve the SQL Server 2012 issue, the Reporting Service Role is installed successfully.

However, I cannot find OraOPs9.dll on a machine with Client Release 9.2 installed. Should OraOps?.dll automatically come with a Client installation of 9.2 or higher?
ODP.NET needs to be installed on the client. OraOps9.dll is part of ODP.NET, not the Oracle Client.
Also, if an application is built with the 10g ODP.NET, can it be run from a machine with OraOps9.dll?
If an application is built with 10g ODP.NET, it can be run with 9.2 ODP.NET as long as you do not use any 10g APIs. The new features in 10g ODP.NET are included in the doc and the ODP.NET FAQ for your reference. -
SQL query against ConfigMgr DB causing 100% cpu usage on SQL server throughout day
Hi, I am hoping someone here may have an idea of what I can do to resolve this as I am not much of a SQL guy. Here is what I know. Throughout the day, monday-friday, my ConfigMgr SQL server sits at 98-100% processor usage.
Using the following query I have narrowed down the culprit of the high cpu usage throughout the day:
SELECT p.spid, p.status, p.hostname, p.loginame, p.cpu, r.start_time, r.command,
p.program_name, text
FROM sys.dm_exec_requests AS r,
master.dbo.sysprocesses AS p
CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(p.sql_handle)
WHERE p.status NOT IN ('sleeping', 'background')
AND r.session_id = p.spid
Even though my knowledge of SQL is light, I believe the following output clearly defines the thread responsible for the high cpu usage. This "program_name" is present throughout the day and as long as its there, cpu usage remains at or near 100%:
The text output of the above culprit is as follows (sorry this is long):

If anyone has any experience with this issue or anything similar and might be able to point me in the right direction, any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!Normally, this summary job every few mins which only summarize last few mins sending history. If the job was not running for long time, the first time, this sproc will summarize a lot more data than normal. So it could fail which will make things worse and
worse over time.
If sending summary data is not a big concern here, you can manually insert a dummy row with most recent time as Summarizationtime, so that, when summary job kicks in next time, it will only summary short interval data.
DrsSendHistory is that the table records every sending on every group. This table is one of the key of replication logic. For your environment, on primary site, it could have up to 24(hrs) * 60 (mins) / 2 (sync interval) * 36(secondary sites) records per
day for Secondary_Site_Replication_Configuration group and 24 * 60 / 5 * 22 records for Secondary Site Data.

Hi Umair,
Thank you for the reply. My plan was to go ahead with your suggestions but what I tried first was to get my VM guy to give the SQL server access to more CPU resources. We had already configured it with what would have seemed to be plenty, as per Microsoft's
sizing requirements, but I figured it couldn't hurt to rule out - he gave the SQL server access to a huge portion of the host processing power and since then CPU usage on the server has NOT been an issue.
It would appear that the large amounts of secondary sites we have just simply put a lot of stress on the SQL server with out of the box replication settings. Since the entire VM host is for System Center only, and our other System Center servers are using
very little resources, this solution has ended up being valid.
Thanks again for everyone's help with this.
