SQL Server Equivalence

Hello,
I would like to have the equivalence of the default data type generated as such in SQL Server.
CREATE TYPE NANOU.TYPEDEVARIABLE [VARCHAR15] FROM [varchar](15) -- Here, in SQL Server, one wants to have a type starting from 15 length of character.
Create or replace type TYPEDEVARIABLE is table of varchar2(15) -- Here, in Oracle creates a type taking a length of 15 characters. Are both sentences the same? If not, what is the best way to implement this in Oracle?
Regards,

Perhaps if you can give a short example of how you would use it in SQL server, including create table and a couple of insert and select statements using the type someone could give you a better Oracle equivalent.
For example, if you use the object type as Ganesh suggested, you get needto do stuff like this on Oracle:
SQL> CREATE TYPE name_type AS OBJECT (
  2     name VARCHAR2(50));
  3  /
Type created.
SQL> CREATE TABLE emp (
  2     id NUMBER,
  3     last_name name_type,
  4     first_name name_type);
Table created.
SQL> desc emp
Name                    Null?    Type
ID                               NUMBER
LAST_NAME                        NAME_TYPE
FIRST_NAME                       NAME_TYPE
SQL> insert into emp VALUES (1, 'Smith', 'John');
insert into emp VALUES (1, 'Smith', 'John')
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes: expected
OPS$ORACLE.NAME_TYPE got CHAR
SQL> insert into emp VALUES (1, name_type('Smith'), name_type('John'));
1 row created.
SQL> SELECT * FROM emp;
        ID LAST_NAME(NAME)       FIRST_NAME(NAME)
         1 NAME_TYPE('Smith')    NAME_TYPE('John')Update get complicated.

  • How to connect to a Sql server from Oracle using db link

    Hi All,
Does anybody have any idea about how to connect to a sql server from oracle database using db link to syncronize the data? I need to pull the data from Sql server table to Oracle tables and relay messages back to the sql server.
    Thank you,
    Praveen.

    we have 2 products - DG4MSQL and DG4ODBC.
DG4ODBC is for free and requires a 3rd party ODBC driver and it can connect to any 3rd party database as long as you use a suitable ODBC driver
DG4MSQL is more powerfull as it is designed for MS SQL Server databases and it supports many functions it can directly map to SQL Server equivalents - it can also call remote procedures or participtae in distributed transactions. Please be aware DG4MSQL requires a license - it is not for free.
Check out Metalink and you'll find notes how to configure both products.

    Hello,
I have a need to load data from Oracle 10g r2 to SQL Server 2008 and vice versa. I am new to heterogeneous connectivity. How do I connect to SQL Server from Oracle and vice versa(connect Oracle from SQL Server).
The Oracle version : Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.5.0
The SQL Server Version :  Microsoft SQL Server 2008Both databases are located on different machines. Oracle is hosted on Solaris UX and SQL Server 2008 is on Windows Server 2008.
Any documentation in this regard will help.
    Please advise.

When you want to connect from Oracle to a SQL server you need to use a gateway. Oracle offers 2 different kind of gateways. The gateway which is for free is based on a 3rd party ODBC. It is called Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) and allows you to connect to any foreign database as long as the ODBC driver is compliant with the gateway requirements documented in the manual.
As it allows you to connect to any foreign database it only supports a few Oracle functions which is able to map to foreign database equivalents. All other functions are post processed.
The more powerful product is Database Gateway for MS SQL Server (DG4MSQL) which is designed for MS SQL Server connections. Thus it supports many more functions which it is directly mapping to SQL Server equivalents and it is also able to participate in distributed transactions and to call SQL Server stored procedures. This DG4MSQL gateway is not for free and requires a license.
I would suggest to check out My Oracle Support and look for this note:Master Note for Oracle Gateway Products          [Document 1083703.1]
It contains a reference to many other notes describing the differences between DG4ODBC and DG4MSQL and it also contains links to common set up notes.
After looking at this note you'll notice that on Unix most 3rd party ODBC drivers are commercial drivers and you might need to purchase them as well. Sometimes the license costs for these drivers are more expensive then purchasing the DG4MSQL. Another option would be to install DG4ODBC on a Windows platform, for example on the SQL Server machine and you could then use the MS SQl Server ODBC driver which is for free and you then have a complete solution for free.

  • Equivalents of SQL Server sysobjects and syscolumns

I'm developing some software that nees to work on both SQL Server and Oracle.
Just starting on the Oracle version, and the first thing I nede to do is query system tables for the names of tables, columns, datatypes etc.
Can anyone tell me what tables are Oracle's equivalent of SQL Server's sysobjects and syscolumns?
    Thanks

To list all the tables belonging to the USER
    SELECT Table_Name from User_Tables;
To list the columns for the tables (USER)
    Select column_name from User_Tab_columns ;
Also, take a look at the following (you can repalce ALL with USER)
    ALL_TABLES
    ALL_TAB_COLUMNS

  • Attributes For SQL Server Physical Models Aren't Saved

In version 3.0.0.665, a physical implementation implementation of data model was persisted to SQL Server 2005. The physical implementation required the use of IDENTITIES; the equivalence to an Oracle sequence.
The functionality works fine because the DDL generated correctly and the script was persisted to the target database without incidence. Both the physical model and DMD were saved. After deployment, the client required the addition of several attributes into the model. Since the model hadn't populated yet, the desired approach involved dropping the SQL SERVER database (Oracle Schema), applying the changes to the data model, generating the DDL, and creating the SQL SERVER database.
Upon inspection of the generated DDL, the IDENTITY directives were absence. Further research discovered the attributes were absence from the property sheets attached to the various physical tables. Further testing uncovered that these attributes only persist throughout the lifetime of the data modeling session.
I have not had this experience with Oracle physical models e.g.(creating trigger, sequences, etc). Most likely this is a defect in the software, but I was curious to know, if anyone else as run across this opportunity.
    Warm regards,
    Greg

  • How to migrate an existing Microsoft SSIS deployment if it is decided to replace SQL Server with an Oracle database?

    Hi Oracle Gurus!
Currently, I am designing an ETL solution that transforms and loads a lot of data from flat files and sends it to an SQL Server 2008 R2 database for storage. However, at a future point of time, it may be decided to add or even replace SQL Server with an Oracle 11g database.
Currently, I am writing script transforms in C# to dynamically generate SSIS packages to tansform and load the data into SQL Server. But considering that in future, an Oracle 11g or 12c database might be added to, or replace the SQL Server database, how do I make my script transforms (or whatever else I am developing currently for SQL Server) reusable to the extent possible?
Or more precisely, what steps do I take, from an Oracle point of view, to ensure that any future migration of data to an Oracle database would be smooth to the extent possible?
Looking up to my Oracle Gurus for enlightenment in this matter!
    Novice Kid

When you're writing your on C# code to load data into the SQL Server you have to modify the routines so that they will work with Oracle.
One approach is to use the extproc agent which would allow you to directly call external programs with all the logic in it to perform the load of your files and to put the data into the Oracle database. Another option would be to use utl_file package (or equivalents) which will allow you to open external files from your Oracle database and to directly read its content and then to pass it to the related tables.

  • UCCX 8.5 Informix/SQL Server linked server question

We have several custom (in-house) queries that were written against a UCCX 7.x installation (SQL Server). These queries were written using a variety of t-sql functions (DATEADD, DATEPART, GETDATE etc). When we migrate to UCCX8.5 (Informix) I'm assuming we will need to translate those t-sql functions to their equivalent Informix functions...is that a correct understanding?  Has anyone else faced a similar situation?  Any gotchas to share?
Also would be interested to hear from anyone who defined a linked server in SQL Server to the new Informix database server....how did it go, any gotchas there?
    Thanks!!!

    Hi
That's pretty much it - there are equivalent functions for most things, and the syntax (beyond the basic selects) is quiet different and there are some random restrictions on the structure of queries that I don't think applied in MS SQL. A good way to learn is:
    - Comparing the MSSQL and Informix equivalents of the standard UCCX procedures
    - The IBM 'boulder' website tends to show up on most searches on google for informix commands and has lots of info on syntax etc.
I find Informix more difficult than SQL as it's less forgiving and you don't get decent tools to debug/verify syntax etc without paying out some money..
I've never had a need to do a linked server.

  • SQL Server memory Configuration - SCOM 2012 R2

    Hi,
The following article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077#BKMK_SupConfigSQLDBconfig states the following about SQL Server memory configuration for SCCM:
When you use a database server that is co-located with the site server, limit the memory for SQL Server to 50 to 80 percent of the available addressable system memory.
When you use a dedicated SQL Server, limit the memory for SQL Server to 80 to 90 percent of the available addressable system memory.
    The question is:
Is there any advice (from technet articles) about SQL Server memory configuration for SCOM 2012 R2?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi There,
    Read the 5th point below
General SQL Server recommendations for System Center 2012 R2
This information describes general recommendations for SQL Server regardless of what System Center component you are deploying.
You will need a minimum of four computers to deploy all System Center components. Aside from performance reasons, not all system components can coexist on the same computer. For more information, see Component
Coexistence for System Center 2012 R2.
For testing purposes only, one SQL Database Engine Services instance may be used for all components, but is not recommended in a production setting due to performance concerns.
Reporting Services instances cannot be shared between System Center components.
SQL_* collations are being deprecated for their Windows equivalents.
Limit the memory of each SQL Server instance such that the Total Memory setting allows a minimum of 1 GB (2GB preferred) of free memory after all services are running.
System Center components requiring the most disk resources are Service Manager, Operations Manager and Configuration Manager.
Disks used should be formatted to a 64K allocation unit size.
Disks used should be configured to allow 20% free space after all calculations for monitoring. Set growth upper limits to not exceed this space limit.
Pre-sizing is preferred - use auto-grow if needed as it uses more resources.
Set Pre-size to 8GB/2GB as a minimum. 20-30% of the database file size is a rule of thumb.
    Set Auto-grow to 500/100 as a minimum.

    Hi Nandu,
As your description, you come across an error(vsjitdebugger.exe cannot be found). Please confirm if the error occurs during the installation of SQL Server 2012.  If so, please help post SQL Server setup logs. By default, SQL Server setup log file locates
    in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
Base on my research, this error could be caused by that the previous uninstallation is improper and vsjitdebugger.exe file could be mistakenly deleted.
To troubleshoot the issue, you could start your computer into Safe Mode and fix your problem with one of the following methods. For more information, please refer to the article:
    http://www.fixerrorkit.com/fix-error/fix-vsjitdebugger.exe-error.html.
    1. You could execute the sfc /scannow command following steps below.
    a. Press "Windows+R", type in cmd and then right click "Run as administrator"
    b. Type in sfc /scannow (There's a space between sfc and /scannow) into the dialog and hit Enter key and click ok.
    c. Wait until the System File Checker finishes the check.
    2. You could use a Windows repair installation, also known as a Startup Repair to repair your Windows system files.
    3. You could install the latest Windows updates to fix vsjitdebugger.exe error. Microsoft often releases new service packs and system patches to replace or update some DLL files of Windows system.
    4. You could use third-party tool such as Automatic Error Fix Tool to fix your vsjitdebugger.exe error. However, Microsoft cannot make any representations regarding the quality, safety, or suitability of any third-party software or information found there.
In addition, if you are unable to install  Visual Studio, I suggest you post your question in Visual Studio Setup and Installation forum at
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=vssetup  . It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.

    Hi,
It seems that your configuration is Ok. By the way, the workaround for this error is:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
[Transparent gateway for ODBC][H001] The environment variable <HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO> is not set.
    * Set HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO in the hs{sid}init.ora file to the data source name.
    Example: HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = <ODBC DataSource Name>
    * Make sure the hs{sid}init.ora file exists in the ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin directory and has the same name as the SID in the LISTENER.ORA.
Example: If SID=hsodbc in the listener.ora file, then the hs{sid}init.ora file would be named ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin/inithsodbc.ora

  • How can I load a .xlsx File into a SQL Server Table using a Foreach Loop Container in SSIS?

I know I've REALLY struggled with this before. I just don't understand why this has to be soooooo difficult.
I can very easily do a straight Data Pump of a .xlsX File into a SQL Server Table using a normal Excel Connection and a normal Excel Source...simply converting Unicode to DT_STR and then using an OLE DB Destination of the SQL Server Table.
If I want to make the SSIS Package a little more flexible by allowing multiple .xlsX spreadsheets to be pumped in by using a Foreach Loop Container, the whole SSIS Package seems to go to hell in a hand basket. I simply do the following...
Put the Data Flow Task within the Foreach Loop Container
Add the Variable Mapping Variable User::FilePath that I defined as a Variable and a string within the FOreach Loop Container
I change the Excel Connection and its Expression to be ExcelFilePath ==> @[User::FilePath]
I then try and change the Excel Source and its Data Access Mode to Table Name or view name variable and provide the Variable Name User::FilePath
And that's when I run into trouble...
    Exception from HRESULT: 0xC02020E8
Error at Data Flow Task [Excel Source [56]]:SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occured. Error code: 0x80004005.
Error at Data Flow Task [Excel Source [56]]: Opening a rowset for "...(the EXACT Path and .xlsx File Name)...". Check that the object exists in the database. (And I know it's there!!!)
I don't understand by adding a Foreach Loop Container to try and make this as efficient as possible has caused such an error unless I'm overlooking something. I have even tried delaying my validations and that doesn't seem to help.
I have looked hard in Google and even YouTube to try and find a solution for this but for the life of me I cannot seem to find anything on pumping a .xlsX file into SQL Server using a Foreach Loop Container.
Can ANYONE please help me out here? I'm at the end of my rope trying to get this to work. I think the last time I was in this quandry, trying to pump a .xlsX File into a SQL Server Table using a Foreach Loop Container in SSIS, I actually wrote a C# Script
to write the contents of the .xlsX File into a .csv File and then Actually used the .csv File to pump the data into a SQL Server Table.
Thanks for your review and am hoping and praying for a reply and solution.

    Hi ITBobbyP,
If I understand correctly, you want to load data from multiple sheets in an .xlsx file into a SQL Server table.
If in this scenario, please refer to the following tips:
The Foreach Loop container should be configured as shown below:
Enumerator: Foreach ADO.NET Schema Rowset Enumerator
Connection String: The OLE DB Connection String for the excel file.
    Schema: Tables.
In the Variable Mapping, map the variable to Sheet_Name, and change the Index from 0 to 2.
The connection string for Excel Connection Manager is the original one, we needn’t make any change.
Change Table Name or View name to the variable Sheet_Name.
If you want to load data from multiple sheets in multiple .xlsx files into a SQL Server table, please refer to following thread:

    Hello,
Are you trying to install SQL Server on a compressed or encrypted drive? SQL Server won’t install on a drive/folder with these attributes.
Are you trying to install SQL Server on a ReFS file system? It is not supported on SQL Server 2012.
Disable any security/antivirus software and download the media again. Mount the media (.ISO file) and try to install again.
    Hope this helps.
