  • SQL Server Express Remote Connection is an Official Function or Not

There are lots of guide on internet about this topic or in the forum.
And I have already tested SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Remote Connection successfully, for usage of an application server.
But I am not sure about this function is Ok or not for production environment, as someone said Remote Connection with SQL Express is not an official function and not supported by Microsoft. Is it true?
Is there some white paper or official function spec about SQL Express to clarify it?

Sure it's an official function of the SQL Server Express Edition.
By default it's only disabled by security reasons, because in common the Express Edition is used for smaller applications running on one machine.

  • CF8 and SQL Server Express 2005 connection problem

Hi. I'm new to SQL Server (I'm running Express 2005 SP2 on
Vista - local machine) and I can't seem to connect to my datasource
with CF Admin. I submit the following information to CF Admin:
    CF Data Source Name: MySampleDB
    Database: MySampleDB
    Server: MyMachine\MSSMLBIZ Port: 1433
    User name: Me
    Password: **********
    I get the following error:
Connection verification failed for data source: MySampleDB
    java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]No

The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException:
[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]No more data available to read.
Log On is using built-in account: Local System
Here's what else i have done so far:
I have tried using 127.0.0.1 as the server
I made sure Windows firewall had an exception to allow port
    1433
    I tried ports 1434 and 8500
I made sure TCP/IP is enabled in SSCM protocols
I even tried leaving the username and pwd blank and I get the
    following message:
Connection verification failed for data source: MySampleDB
    java.sql.SQLException: [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC

I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. Thanks in advance for
    your help!

    Hi,
The port might have been blocked. Try setting a new port for
your sqlserver. That may work for you.
(Because SP2 always blocks port 1433)

  • Tomcat - SQL Server 2000 Database connectivity - Need Help

    Hi
I am new to java and Apache Tomcat, can anyone help me how to connect SQLServer 2000 Database. thru .jsp, in my pc I have installed XP Prof. with SP2, SQL Server 2000 Developer Ed. with SP4, Apache Server 2.2 Tomact 5.5., Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC. Please help me out.. I want to know all settings for SQL connectivity & sample code.
    Thanks in advance.

So why don't you search for the documentation? Tomcat is one of the few apache java projects that is actually decently documented.
    http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html
That should be all you need to get up and running. For the correct JDBC settings, the microsoft website has an article, as do many other websites.

    Hi,
Thanks for your time and help, but I couldn't able to see the database itself.

and its showing network data base names.
If I type the database name and user is sa...but there is no luck in connecting...

  • SQL Server Express 2005 to 2014 upgrade and Uninstallation issues

We have client application running SQL Server Express that connects to a SQL Server 2012 server.  We are attempting to upgrade from Microsoft SQL 2005 express to Microsoft SQL Server 2014
express – but are having difficulties – especially with uninstall.
Our understanding is that we needed to follow the following steps:
First we install Microsoft SQL 2005 express SP4 as required silently
    Start /wait SQLEXPR.exe /qn ACTION=UPGRADE INSTANCENAME="SQLEXPRESS" UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SAPWD=<password>
    SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" SQLPASSWORD= SECURITYMODE="SQL"
Then try upgrading with Microsoft SQL Server 2014 express, we use following command to do it silently
    SQLEXPR.exe /q /ACTION=upgrade /INSTANCENAME=SQLEXPRESS /ISSVCAccount="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
    We see following
In Control Panel -> Uninstall or change program, we have all the instances listed 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2014.
How do we uninstall the instance?  , We try uninstalling 2014
But it is not cleanly uninstalled.
    Questions:
Is there any way for clean upgrade from Microsoft SQL 2005 express SP3 to Microsoft SQL 2014 express?
Is there any specific steps suggested to uninstall upgraded SQL 2014 express from system?
Are we doing anything wrong in commands for silent upgrade?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
After you perform an in-place upgrade it’s normal to find the binaries and references of the old version of SQL Server on the Start Menu and Control Panel -> Programs and Features. That’s by design. After you have successfully upgraded an instance, you can
    remove the old binaries.
IfIf you find some remnants after uninstalling SQL Server 2014, please perform the following steps to manually uninstall it:
    1. Uninstall all SQL Server 2014 components you can using Control Panel -> Programs and
    Features
    2. Backup the registry.
    3. Delete the following keys in regedit:
        --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
        --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete
all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing
    SQL Server.
    6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer like
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and subfolders.
    Hope this helps.

  • Exporting SQLServer Compact (*.sdf) to SQL Server Express 2012

I'm using ErikEJ's SQL Server Compact Toolbox 4.0.0.1 in VS 2013 to attempt to upgrade an .sdf to an SQL Server Express database.  I go "Script Database for SQL Server", which generates a file.  The next instruction is to:
You can now open the generated script in Management Studio and execute it against a SQL Server database.
I'm missing something here - I can open it easily enough in SQL Server Management Studio ("File | Open") but how do I execute it?
    Thank - Tim

    Hi Tim,
Quote: and execute it against a SQL Server database.
We can execute the script with key F5 or by clicking on the "Execute" Icon in SSMS symbol bar as Olaf mentioned above. But there is one more thing we need to pay attention to. Before executing the script, we’d better create a new user database,
then we can execute the script against our new user database (or other user database we have, but not any system database).
How to execute the script against the database:
Click the DropDownList box next to the "Execute" Icon in SSMS symbol bar and select the database, then click the "Execute" Icon.
In addition, for more information about how to create a SQL Server database, please refer to the following article:

  • Is SQL Server Express 2012 the same as Enterprise, BI and Standard?

We are a software company in the process of modifying code to work with SQL Server 2012 & 2014.  We are doing development work and testing on SQL Server Express 2012. (We plan to move to SQL Server Express 2014, soon.)  Is SQL Server Express
the same code as Enterprise, BI and Standard?   Will our tests and dev work be valid?  Should the need arise at a customer site, will SQL Server Express database migrate to Enterprise, BI or Standard?

    Hello,
Yes, you can use detach/attach or backup/restore. Alternatively, you may want to perform and edition upgrade
of an existing SQL Server instance when possible.

    Hello,
Please make sure you change RemoteServer with the computer name of the intended SQL Server server.
Make sure the SQL Server instance have enable TCP/IP and Named Pipes protocols. Use the following article to enable them:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191294.aspx
Start SQL Server Browser Service using SQL Server Configuration Manager.

    Hi DianaWeb,
It's glad to hear that your problem is resolved by changing the windows authentication into mixed authentication and use 'sa' user, namely an SQL Server authentication.
I believe the user name and password in the Netbean are for SQL Server Authentication to connect to SQL Server. The windows authentication you typed is not a valid SQL Server Authentication, that was why the connection failed.
In any case, if you want your J2EE project connects to SQL Server using Windows authentication(credentials of the user running Tomcat/Jboss where your application is deployed). Just build your JDBC URL like this:
    jdbc:sqlserver://localhost;integratedSecurity=true;
    See
Can I connect to SQL Server using Windows Authentication from Java EE webapp?

  • SQL Server Express 2014 on Win8.1: Could not find the Database Engine startup handle

    Hello,
I tried to follow all the similarly titled posts in this forum, yet no solution seems to work, so I hope I can find some up-to-date suggestion here (most of the older posts refer to versions from 2008 to 2012...).
I have installed Visual Studio 2013 (with the latest Update 2 RC) on a freshly installed development workstation with Win 8.1 with all its updates. Now I'd want to install SQL Server 2014 Express, but the setup keeps failing with the dreaded "Could
not find the Database Engine startup handle" error (the log follows below).
    What I tried:
    1) download again and repair. Same error.
    2) completely uninstall by launching setup.exe /Action=uninstall (success), then rebooting the OS, then installing again. Same error. I did this twice, the second time I also manually removed any directory left out in C:\Program Files etc.
When I launch the setup, I select all the components for installation in the package SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe (1.12 GB, last downloaded today -Apr 3, 2014-), and accept all the defaults including the proposed services accounts. There is no preexisting
    SQL Server instance, as expected.
The setup takes its time, and finally fails with the error quoted above. I really do not want to reformat my HD and fully reconfigure my workstation, which took about 3 days... Could anyone suggest a solution to have SQL Server 2014 setup so I can start
developing instead of wasting time in administering the system?
Thanks to all! The log follows.

Thank you, it worked! I suppose that it was really your nr.3 which made the difference. I changed NT Service\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS to NT AUTHORITY\System for the Data service. I'll then change it again as suggested (any suggestion about a "standard"
account to be used here?), even if this is a development workstation using SQL Server Express only as a local database for debugging, so security is not really a big concern.
Thanks for the feedback.Ya I know No3 was real step but just added more info so as to rule out any other possibility.
No not as such, you wont believe, quite few pf my clients I have worked for keep it with local system and they have not complained yet ,they are afraid to change account as few of them faced issue SQL Server not coming online due to logon failure( after changing
startup account to some domain a and that was happening due to some AD policy. But if you have nay plans to move Critical database in production which would be act as Database to some Internet facing application please follow my suggestion
of running SQL Server with Least privileged domain account.

    Hi,
    >>Server is listening on [ 'any' <ipv4> 1026].
Your sql server is not listening on default port 1433 but on 1026.When you connect to instance like hostname\instancename you should specify post no also.
    like hostname\instancename ,1026
Can you try this.Makes sure TCP/IP and named pipes protocol is enabled

  • Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Drivers 4.0.2206 timeout on first connection to SQL Server Express after it sleeps

Our builds kick off and run integration tests. They are configured to hit a SQL Server Express server.
If the builds have been quiet for a while, the first test to connect fails after stalling for 20 minutes.
    Subsequent tests are fine.
Reversing test order does the same thing, with a different test.
We noticed in the SQL Server express log the server saying it is waking up after being idle.
Microsoft SQL Server Express with Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Drivers 4.0.2206.
Connection times out after 20 minutes.Occurs with the first connection made after the SQL Server Express server wakes up from going to sleep.Connections after the first are just fine, until SQL Server Express sleeps.SSL enabled. Timeout duration for the connection failure is unaffected by setting timeout options for the connection.  Work around:
cron-like job that runs every minute that makes a simple query on the server keeps the server from going to sleep.
Has anyone else run into this?

    Hello,
SQL Server Express will go to sleep if idle, this behavior is not configurable.
When SQL Express transitions from idle to active some of the memory that was released needs to be reclaimed; this results is a slight lag during "startup time" when you're first connecting to SQL Express.
The other sort of sleep occurs when a database with AUTO_CLOSE unloading itself after a period of inactivity. This can be resolved by setting AUTO_CLOSE to false.
You can refer to the following blog about more details about this:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlexpress/archive/2008/02/22/sql-express-behaviors-idle-time-resources-usage-auto-close-and-user-instances.aspx
You can try to upgrade the SQL Server Express to a non-free version to get rid of this.

  • Connection problem in Crystal Reports for Eclipse(SQL Server Express 2008)

I tried to connect into a local SQL Server Express 2008 database in Crystal Reports for Eclipse (CR4E), but always  got the Ping failed message(TCP/IP connection failed) even I tests completed successfully using my Window XP Adminstrators Tools (SQL Server ODBC Data Source Test). I can connect successfully to a remote network Oracle database in CR4E. I would like to know
that is there any one who connect SQL Server Express 2008 local database successfully in CR4E?

    Don,
Thanks for your suggestions. I will follow your instruction to connect to SQL Server Express 2008 database latelly. I can connect successfully with different Oracle databases (10g) in CR4E. I will try to connect MySQL database and Postgres database in CR4E  to see if they can be  successful or not. My project involves international entities with emphsizing  in using OPEN SOURCE softwares (which means FREE - no license fees) in .NET platform for Oracle, SQL Server Express, MySQL and Postgres database servers. I am responsible for reports generation. I hope that CR4E can be connected successfully to SQL Server Express 2008 database server, otherwise I have to use JFreeReport/JFreeChart tools to do reports generation .
