Sql Server Express Query String error
I am having trouble trying to filter my sql database using the query string against a date column in my database. I set a date variable = "dd/mm/yyy" format but when I apply that in the sql query as:
StartPeriod = CDate("01/" & Today.Month.ToString & "/" & Today.Year.ToString)
EndPeriod = CDate(Today.Day.ToString & "/" & Today.Month.ToString & "/" & Today.Year.ToString)
At this point StartPeriod = #04/01/2015# and EndPeriod is #04/27/2015#
sql = "SELECT * FROM Transactions WHERE ((PaidOutDate IS Null) OR (TransDate >= '" & StartPeriod & "' AND TransDate <= '" & EndPeriod & "')
When I execute the Sql command I get this error:
"Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string"
My Current Culture is {en-AU}
Any help is appreciated.

Visakh,
Further to the problem above. Your suggestion worked well on my laptop, but when I transferred the program to my desktop it failed with the error: "Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string" again. Both
computers are running the same version of Windows 8.1, both running the same version of vs express 2012 and both running the same version of ssms. Both Windows 8.1 versions have the same English (Australia) as the Region and language. The only
difference that I can find is that while both have a CurrentCulture of {en=AU} and CurrentUICulture of {en-GB} the laptop, where the program works has an InstalledUICulture of {en-GB} and the PC where it doesn't work has an InstalledUICulture of {en-US}.
Do you think this could be the problem? If so, how would I change the InstalledIUCulture?
As you can tell I am way our of my depth here, I've looked in the Control Panel and both computers appear to have the same settings for options that I think are relevant, but of course there could be hundreds of other settings nI don't know about.
I've also progressively worked through the Registry on both computers comparing their settings but could find nothing relevant.
Any suggestions of where to look?
Thanks Again
Brad

SQL Server Express 2008 Installation error. PLEASE HELP.
Hey guys anyone know what I should do to install SQL Server Express 2008?
Im running Vista Home Premium SP1 32bit
These are folders i got on framework folder:
* v3.5
* v3.0
* v2.0.50727
* v1.1.4322
* v1.0.3705
Installing SQL Server 2008 Express (run time only)
And this is the error I get during the process
"Attributes do not match. Present Attributes (Directory, Compressed), included attributes (0), excluded attributes (Archive, Compressed, Encrypted)."
I have downloaded and installed all Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Express Ed (C++, C#, VB, WebDev) and all worked well
I get this error during the "Feature Selection" setup process.
I also noticed when I tried to use Windows Update, I saw Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (KB968369) suddenly available (I have updated windows and installed all important updates before installing Microsoft Visual Studio and SQL). Then I used Windows Update to install SQL Server 2008 SP1 and I still got this error:
Error
Code 84B40000 Unknown error....
I also get this downloading error on SQL Server while installing all 4 Visual Studio Express Editions (C#, C++, VB, WebDev).
"The following cannot be downloaded:"
I've already tried the troubleshooting guide about BITS but the tool fix seems to only supports Windows XP Operating Systems.
Please please please Help Me (^_^).. thanks to all.
P.S.
I think this might have some connections to why I get errors on a simple 'Hello World' Website.
I was just trying to simply make a 'Hello World' Website .. Just THAT on my website.
A simple Website for me to start. Just showing those text on the website. But when I tried to run (debug) the program. This error shows...
'Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost:5903.'
I have Build the Web Site and there was no error. Since it was just simply 'Hello World' text.
Im sure there's some problem but I'm completely stuck here. I dunno if its connected to the problem above.
Please help me solve this problem. Thank you so much.
I appreciate everyone's help.In my case I had to uncheck "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"
Right click on C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
Click Advanced on General Tab

of domain admin account add it as a local administrator in this machine always right click on setup file and select run as administrator. Before this make sure you remove all SQL Server components from add remove program

SQL Server Express 2008 Setup Error : Exit code -2147467259.
Hello.
I have been trying to install SQL Express 2008, 3 different editions on a Windows 2008 Standard Server. All of the installers failed just after the install file had finished unpacking itself in a temp folder. No errors or logs were found.
.Net3.5sp1, Windows Installer 4.5 and PowerShell 1.0 were all installed.
I was only able to find a log file when I used the SqlExpressWrapper.exe to drive the installation.
The error displayed from the wapper is : An error occurred during installation of SQL Server 2008 Express. Installation failed with exit code -2147467259
thank you for your help.

these are the lines which seem to be causing the error. Any idea of how I fix this ?

HELP - SQL Server Express Install Problems
The SQL Server Express completed without error. However, when I tried to connect to the SQLEXPRESS instance I received one of those wonderful MS errors, "Specified file not found". WHAT FILE? (After all these years MS still can't figure out how
to give an error msg. that provides some hint of what's wrong.) Going on, I started the install console and selected the REPAIR option. (It didn't ask what the problem was, it just ran.) It did ask what instance needed repair. I told
it SQLSERVER. It proceeded to repairing it. My first hint that their repair function worked as well as their error handling was when I got the: That share name has already been used (or something like that) error (notice, MS didn't tell me what
share name, or what aspect of the db they were talking about). After pressing OK, the REPAIR function proceeded to run to completion. When I reviewed the REPAIR report I found that three db processes all had the same SHARE NAME ALREADY USED error.
Actually, I thought that it was no big deal. If this was a real REPAIR, it shouldn't matter that the name was already used because everything else should be the same. (I know I'm nigh eve about the
Intricacies of SQL server.) After repairing my installation, I brought up the SQL Server Management Console again. This time, it did not display SQLEXPRESS in the Connect field. I selected the drop down list arrow to see if it was
listed and the list was blank so I entered SQLEXPRESS in the connect field and clicked on the CONNECT button. I got a NETWORK PATH NOT FOUND error. So, before I really mess things up, I thought I should ask if anyone knows what I should do
next. (As an aside, I've pressed the MS Error Message HELP button numerous times abut various errors I've received over the years. Not only are MS error messages useless, their Help Page has never ONCE been able to provide any information
about the encountered error. MS should spend some time and develop some truly helpful error messages as "File not found" and unknown error code 837289 are absolutely useless and especially since their HELP PAGE is never able to provide any
information either. I do wonder how I can get Unknown Error codes from people who wrote the code that raises the error. Don't they document anything?)I did read the requirements and made sure I met them all. The install package I used was: SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe. You're correct. I'm not familiar with SQL Server.
I downloaded SQL Server Express and Visual Studio Express to learn and explore because I wanted to learn about the new technology.
After leaving my message, I did some more studying and playing with the system. I managed to figure out that I had to turn on the data base service before I could connect with it. I'm sorry, I don't understand how Microsoft could install a data
base system without turning on its services. Why would I want to install something and NOT use it? The default should be ON and the setup manager should provide a choice to set it to OFF on the configuration page.
My experience is rather dated. I had to retire due to a disability in 2005. I couldn't control my arms and hands. The doctor recently tried a medication again that I had had a severe negative reaction to. He first administered steroids
and started me on a small dose and titrated it up as I was able to handle it. Now I have some days where I have pretty good control — I can print a little but can't write well and other days where I can't print, write, or feed myself.
I have performed many functions. I have been an analyst, a programmer, a data base designer, and a college professor at three different colleges. I've done extensive work in process automation and have even automated the management functions
for a data base system that was used to schedule every aspect of all the aircraft, ranges, and weapons development processes on Eglin AFB. I also wrote major pieces of the code used by the system and trouble shot and corrected functions written by other
programmers. The system supported over 300 users a day on two bases. Unfortunately it was developed in Fortran on a VAX and with VB6 and MS Access using VBA, Queries, Tables and Forms on networked PCs.
I plan to do a lot of reading. I'll also be looking at the Microsoft sites for a sample DB and lessons to go with it. I am a little frustrated with how information is organized on the web. The other night I needed to find some information
about something from Microsoft. It took me almost two hours to ask my question in such a way that MS was able to provide what I wanted. I kept asking essentially the same thing, but I had to use the exact phrase MS used on the page. I know
MS is big and they support multiple generations of each product. They have an almost impossible task. I just have to find the various product entry pages.
Thanks for offering your help. -
I have the below network setup:-
1. Its a simple network at my father's office at a small town called Ichalkaranji (District - Kolhapur, Maharashtra).
2. We are using private network range 192.168.1.xxx with two Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP2 licensed copies and 15 local Windows 7 clients who are only using Server A.
3. The network is having a TP-Link Braodband Router Connected to internet with the IP 192.168.1.1.
4. Both there Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP2 are running separate SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services, you can treat them as Server A (Problematic Server with IP of 192.168.1.2)
and Server B (this is not having any issue with IP of 192.168.1.3).
5. Server A is also being used by 6 Remote users from our Kolkata office using DDNS facility through the NO IP client software which installed separately on both the servers. Kolkata remote users
do not use OR access the Server B.
6. Server B is being used by only 2 Remote users from our Erode office (Under Salem District, Tamilnadu) using DDNS facility through the NO IP client software which installed separately on both
the servers. Erode remote users do not use OR access the Server A.
7. The front end application which running separately on both the servers have been developed in VB by a local vendor at Ichalkaranji (District - Kolhapur, Maharashtra).
8. Both Servers are having the same database structure in terms of design and tables format. Only difference is that both the servers are being used separately.
9. This error OR problem is only related to Server A, where on the clients we get the message "error [hyt00] [microsoft][odbc sql server driver] query timeout expired" every now and then.
10. We have to frequently reboot the server whenever we get this message on the client machines. May be after rebooting every thing works perfectly for 2 hours / 5 Hours / may be one full day but
the the error will come back for sure.
11. Current Database back up size on Server A is around 35 GB and take around 1 hour 15 minutes daily to take the back up.
12. Current Database back up size on Server B is around 3 GB and take around 5 to 10 minutes daily to take the back up.
13. One thing I have noticed is that when ever we reboot Server A, for some time sqlsrvr.exe file will show memory usage of 200 to 300 MBs but it will start using slowly, what i understand is that
this is the way SQL Server works.
14. Both the Servers are also running Quick heal Antivirus Server Edition separate licensed copies also.
15. Server B is also running Tally ERP 9 Licenses copy which is being used locally by 15 users of Ichalkaranji (District - Kolhapur, Maharashtra) same users
Can any one help to resolve this issue. Any help will be highly appreciated.The error message "query timeout expired" occurs, because by default many APIs, including ODBC only waits for 30 seconds for SQL Server to send any output. If no data has been seen for this period of time, they tell SQL Server to cancel execution
and return this error to the caller.
This timeout could be seen as a token that the query is taking too long time to execute and this needs to be fixed. But it can also be a pain in the rear parts, if you are content with a report taking five minutes, because you only run it once a day.
The simplest way to get rid of the error is to set the timeout to zero, which means "wait forever". This is something your vendor would have to do. This may, however, not resolve the problem, as the users may just find that the application is hanging.
To wit, there are two reasons why the query takes more than 30 seconds to complete. One is that there is simply that much work to do. This can be reduced by adding indexes or by doing other tuning, if the execution time is not acceptable. The other possibility
is blocking. That is, there is a process blocking this query from completing. This is much more likely to require attention.
It is not clear to me, whether the vendor has developed the database part as well. In this case, you should probably call the vendor's support desk to have them to sort this out.
Finally, I am little puzzled. You say that you are using Express Edition, but one of the databases is 35 GB in size. 35 GB is far above the limit for Express Edition.

MOF syntax error occurred while installing 2008 SQL server Express on Vista Ultimate
I have tried cleaning, then installing 2008 SQL server Express on Vista Ultimate 3 times and spent hours on this. I have installed regular SQL server on 2003 server with no issues many times, but I have huge issues with 2008 SQL server Express. I keep getting the proceeding errors.
Any ideas?

I have tried installing SQL Server 2008 multiple times on my machine, and I always receive this error about 3/4 of the way through: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission.
I have tried installing both SQL Server Express 2008 with Tools and SQL Server Express 2008 with Advanced Services, and they both fail the same way. I am trying to do a new stand-alone installation.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
Looking into the error, some forums say I have to install it from THE Administrator account, and not an account with administrator permissions; it also cannot be in Safe Mode, because then the Windows Installer won't work. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to login to the Administrator account. I can go to the home login screen, do ctrl+alt+del twice, and attempt to login to the Administrator account, but I receive this error: Unable to Log You on because of an Account Restriction.
Other forums say that in the Server Configuration section, all you have to do is provide the username and a strong password from an administrative account on the computer, and it doesn't have to be THE Administrator. Well, I did that, but for some reason it doesn't recognize my username and password, it says something like "The credentials you provided for the SQL Server Agent are invalid". BUT THOSE ARE THE CORRECT CREDENTIALS FOR MY ADMINISTRATIVE USER! So I'm forced to use one of the accounts without a password, like NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. That's the only way I can get past this step.
Also, just FYI, on the next step, which is Database Engine Configuration, I am using Mixed Mode for the Security Mode. I AGAIN provide a password, and then add my current user (who IS an administrator on my machine!) to the SQL Server Administrators box.
But yet, it fails every single time.
This is pathetic and ridiculous. I must have tried to install this thing 15 times, that is not an exaggeration. I'm posting this on several other forums as well, maybe an MVP or Bill Gates himself can help me.
I have one of the log files from a failed installation. If someone would like to see it, I will post it.Papy Normand wrote:

PS : if you are talking about the Sql Server Agent Service, it is disabled for Sql Server Express. It is enabled only for the Workgroup/Standard/Dev and Entreprise Editions
Sorry, but I've tried the suggestion in that link, and it hasn't helped me.
For anyone wonder, the link is talking about the problem in Server Configuration where I enter my Windows user account and password (which is in the Administrative group), but it says the credentials are invalid. The link suggests that you need to either enter your Windows account (which I did, and it wouldn't let me go to the next step), or to use one of the built in accounts (which I also tried, but it gave me the " '' is not a valid login" error during the installation).
Any other ideas?
I haven't had any answers from any other forums either, so I'll just post my log file in case anyone wants to look at this:

I'm looking for some general guidance on this complete error:
Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unknown token received from SQL Server [SQLSTATE HY000]
String data, right truncation [SQLSTATE 01004]
Msg 16389, Sev 16, State 1: The connection is no longer usable because the server response for a previously executed statement was incorrectly formatted. [SQLSTATE 08S01]
This error is caused by a SQL Agent Job, but it does not always occur. I understand this could be an issue with SQL dropping the connection, but what is the best way to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,
PhilHi philliptackett77,
It would be more helpful for troubleshooting the issue if you post the SQL Server error log and SQL Server version. Additionally, please state what purpose of using the agent job.
Based on my research, [SQLSTATE 08S01] error means communication link failure. If the executed statement returns invalid value in the job, the connection between server and client will fail. This error could be caused by the error of [SQLSTATE HY000] and
[SQLSTATE 01004]. I’d like to share my knowledge about these errors as below.
Quote: String data, right truncation [SQLSTATE 01004]
This error could occur when passing data whose length is larger than the received object,and the passed value is truncated, and returns invalid value. So please check if the data type of the objects are identical and the length of passed value is not larger
than the received object.
Quote: Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unknown token received from SQL Server [SQLSTATE HY000]
The error could occur in the two cases below.
1. If you use SQL Server version 6.50, and execute the cursor in the job step, set the statement options to use a server-side cursor and prepare a select statement on a SQL Server system table. The first execution of the select creates the cursor successfully.
After you close this cursor, if you execute the prepared statement again, the error could occur.
I recommend you to apply the latest service pack firstly. If the error still occurs, you could change your code by using a forward-only cursor instead of a static, keyset, or dynamic cursor on the system tables. If a forward-only cursor is unacceptable,
prepare the select statement again on the system table and execute it to create a server-side cursor. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/151693/en-us
2. The TDS stream from the server is invalid when transfer data between a database server and a client. This error is typically caused by a problem on the server. For more information about errors above, please refer to the article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa937531(v=sql.80).aspx

I have a data cluster that I am working to write to either Access 2007 thru 2010 and/or SQL Server Express 2008 thru 2012 all on a Windows 7 64 bit OS. Some of the elements are long strings that I put delimited data for the raw trace data. The fields can be 10's of KB long. With Access I cannot stuff any string >255char into the memo field. With SQL Server Express 2008R2 - 2012 I found that if the strings are >32767 they again fail to fill the memo fields. The Access write or reads work fine otherwise, just not the listed offending fields in the cases mentioned. Anyone else having the issue or a solution?
If the long string field has repetitive data, you might be able to compress it using GZIP to reduce it's size below the 32K limitation you mentioned.

Having issues with getting SQL Server Express to start services and run.
Good afternoon everyone,
I have been working on a 2012 R2 server getting ready to move databases to new hardware. I had SQL Server Express 2008 R2 running on this server with no issues. I was handed another software package that ran SQL Express 2012 and had to for compatibility
reasons. I have had multiple versions run on Server 2012 before with no issues. This time, not so lucky. When the installer from the updated package put on SQL Express 2012 it completed with errors ( error log posted at the end of post) and
would not allow me to run software. I then tried the db that I had installed on 2008 R2 and it also gave the same error as the 2012 version. IN basic terms the required services attempted to start and shut back down again. I have received
Error 1068 about database handles and error %%945. I know this db has plenty of space and the permissions were added for the Admin account to access both db's. I then uninstalled both versions and tried again, with the same errors listed when
I tried to start the services. I am thinking that a clean install would fix the issue however I am not certain what files/folders/reg entries need to be deleted or modified. I have researched all the errors I can find, however I am very
new with SQL anything so I know I am missing something. I also do not have an "E:" drive on this server (not sure why it is going there). Input would be very welcome as I am not certain where to go from here.
Thanks,
Matt

Hi HMLunger,
Did you install the SQL Server instance successfully? If not, please help to post the summary and detail logs for analysis. By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
However, if you fail to start SQL Server Express service after successfully installing SQL Server,
you might have to change the paths of the files by running the following scripts from the command prompt. For more details, please review this similar
thread.
NET START MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS /f /T3608
SQLCMD -S .\SQLEXPRESS
ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
go
exit;
ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
NET STOP MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS
In addition, you can follow the steps in this KB article to uninstall SQL Server.
Thanks,
Lydia Zhang

Problem with Datasource for SQL Server Express
I have set up a development environment to develop some processes for the HCSO client and have a question. I have a turnkey install on my laptop with MYSQL. The liveCycle databases are in MYSQL. I have also installed SQL Server Express on this machine and created a table to query that will control workflow. I added a datasource configuration in the adobe-ds.xml configuration file. That configuration is:
<local-tx-datasource>
<jndi-name>HCSO</jndi-name>
<connection-url>jdbc:sqlserver://localhost:1433;DatabaseName=DBName</connection-url>
<driver-class>com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver</driver-class>
<user-name>username</user-name>
<password>password</password>
<min-pool-size>1</min-pool-size>
<max-pool-size>30</max-pool-size>
<blocking-timeout-millis>60000</blocking-timeout-millis>
<autoReconnect>true</autoReconnect>
<idle-timeout-minutes>15</idle-timeout-minutes>
<prepared-statement-cache-size>100</prepared-statement-cache-size>
<transaction-isolation>TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED</transaction-isolation>
<new-connection-sql>Select id from HCSOUser.eric</new-connection-sql>
<check-valid-connection-sql>Select id from HCSOUser.eric</check-valid-connection-sql>
<metadata>
<type-mapping>MS SQLSERVER2000</type-mapping>
</metadata>
</local-tx-datasource>
In SQL Server, I created a user and a schema with the same name in a database. I created a simple table called "eric" with one column called "id". The user was given the appropriate default schema and given full permissions on the database and table.
In workbench, I added a JDBC query single row activity. I have configured the datasource as java:/HCSO and also tried java:HCSO. I then entered the query as "Select id from HCSOUser.eric" and hit test. Nothing appears in the results area. I see the following in the server.log:

SQL Server Express intermittent installation issue
Have been seeing this error for several months trying to duplicate and troubleshoot. SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express being installed on Windows 7 (x86 or x64) Professional, various processors, various execution environments (VM and non-VM). Yesterday duplicated
on x86 Win7 Pro VM clean install (installed Win7 Pro, loaded all updates except .NET 4.5, and installed my application). App installer copies .NET 4, Visual Studio 2010 C++ run-time, and then SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2. Below is portion of detail.txt from

Please note that this is NOT a question about fixing this one installation. This is an SQL Server Express install as part of my application install and MUST WORK FIRST TIME, EVERY TIME. Please direct me.
Paul T.Here are the parameters used with the SQL Server Express installer EXE (both x86 and x64):
/q /hideconsole /action=Install /features=SQL /instancename=SQLEXPRESS /enableranu=1 /sqlsvcaccount="NT Authority\Network Service" /AddCurrentUserAsSqlAdmin /skiprules=RebootRequiredCheck /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms
I presume that TCP/IP is not enabled by default for Express installs. I THINK that named pipe should be enabled.

Good morning,
I'm experiencing the following issue when installing Microsoft SQL Server Express 2012 (with tools, SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe) on the laptop of my company;
Installation goes plain until around the end of the progress bar, it stops on the setup of
SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32
giving 7-8 times, even pressing "Cancel", the message "The requested control is not valid for this service";
After this, I receive one last message ""Could not find the database engine startup handle", then installation ends with failures, in particular the Database Engine and the Server Replication failed to be installed.
I've put in my SkyDrive the error log I received after the install;
I'm at full disposal if you need further information,
thank you in advance
Best regards
FrancescoWell, i just ran into this issue and the problem was lack of admin rights. It was my company's laptop so got the setup initiated by my company's IT team with admin rights. However, the upon completion of setup, i go the same error messages as stated above:
SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32
giving 7-8 times, even pressing "Cancel", the message "The requested control is not valid for this service";
After this, I receive one last message ""Could not find the database engine startup handle", then installation ends with failures, in particular the Database Engine and the Server Replication failed to be installed.
Also, if you open SQL Server Configuration, the status of the service is "Change Pending" and you would not be able to set the startup login type to Local Service/System/Network.
Then, I just got my account added as Local Admin and then tried to start the service and was able to.
However, I am not sure whether same was the case for you.
Please mark the answer as helpful if i have answered your query. Thanks and Regards, Kartar Rana
