SQL Server maintenance

Hi experts,
We are running BPC for MS with SQL 2008. Our data growth is very modest (less than 100 MB per month).
We are currently using the functionality in BPC to do the maintenance (Optimization etc). Given our low volumes, do we need to order additional server maintenance from our IT vendor to directly in SQL Server?
What additional maintenance could they do that would be benificial to us?

Hi Sam,
BPC maintenance is specific for BPC appsets and is trying to provide you good performances for appset.
For good performances of SQL Server database you really have to create a maintenance plan for SQL Server.
You can read more about Maintenance Pllan into Microsoft side.
Usually maintenance plan is corelated with a backup strategy.
Because we are speaking about a small amount of data in your case I suggest:
1. Keep database in simple mode
2. Full Backup every day after the full optimize of SAP BPC appset and also
3. Shrink of transaction log after the backup
4. Update statistics of your appset
Once per week instead of full optimize for SAP BPC you have to perform full optimize with compress.

My client has MS SQL database administrators that are highly recommending doing a periodic reindex as they are seeing a high level of fragmentation. I am unable to find any documents on proper MS SQL Server maintenance from Cisco. In the absence of recommendations from "the vendor" (as the DBA puts it) should we apply generally accepted maitenance procedures for MS SQL? Should we set our log files to Autogrow as they are currently set to none?

Hi,
since MS SQL Server is not used in UCCX anymore, I assume you are talking about Cisco ICM.
It has already a system implemented that periodically checks the size of tables and removes old data according to the schedule.
I don't really see the meaning of index "defragmentation", as data is written sequentially to the historical tables. You can rebuild the index of the configuration tables, if, for instance, agents are added and removed frequently.

A Server error occurred on the current command.
The results, if any should be discarded (Microsoft Sql Server)
Any experts can help me to resolve this issue.

This problem occurs if some of the stored procedures while installing SP2 has not been applied successfully. So manually run the script below and it may resolve
your issue. It resolved ours and we went throught exact same process of re-installing several times.
                1)
First go to the folder Install . The default location is this = “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Install “ .
Please post back still your issue not resolves.
2)
Then in this folder find this “sysdbupg.sql” .
3)
Please open this script with a nodepad.
4)
Then copy the
whole script and then paste it in the Query window of the Management studio.
5)
Then execute this script.
6)
Once this script has been successfully executed, The issue should be resolved.

SQL Server Maintenance Task

I have configured a maintenance task that consists of only two T-SQL Statements, one that executes after completion of the other, however it fails and no history is generated. Please advise how I should begin troubleshooting the issue with the maintenance
task.

what version\edition of sql are you using? how are you executing your maintenance plans ?? through sql job or straight from maintenance plan.
make sure your sql server agent is running. you can get the error log from two places 1. maintenance history 2. job history. these two are integrated..

SQL Server Maintenance Plan does not run DEL command in .BAT

I have a T-SQL Statement task in my Maintenance Plan that runs a .BAT file and it runs OK when manually executed. The .BAT file has a del d:\backups\*.* command in it. However, when the plan runs automatically at a scheduled time, the .BAT file does
not delete files. Could this be a permissions issue?

Hi Paul,
This looks like a permission issue. Make sure the account SQL instance is running has delete permissions on the folder from which you are trying to delete and also make sure the account has execute permission on that batch file.

Unable to edit maintenance plan Sql Server 2008R2

I am unable to edit sql server maintenance plan and it is failing continuously from job as well.When I try to open the same the throws an error:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is unable to load this document.:
Error loading from XML. No further detailed error information can be supplied for this problem because no Event objects was passed where detailed error information can be stored. It used to work pretty well in the past.Throws same error when I try to connect
remotely.

"Value cannot be null" error when trying to edit or create Maintenance Plan in SQL Server 2008

I have SQL Server 2008 installed on Windows Server 2008 64bit, every time I try to open or create a new Maintenance Plan I receive the error:
Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: component (System.Design)
Program Location:

And in the Design view screen

I have searched for a possible solution and have tried some suggestions of registering the msxml6.dll but and have installed VS2008 SP1 but I'm not in a position where I can do a full reinstall of SQL Server right now. Any help is appreciated. My SQL server

I digged a little deeper and figured out it was a missing directory/file in %TEMP%. Seems some CleaningTool removes all files/directories in %Temp% and after that SSMS was not working any longer. The missing file is actually not needed, but the
missing directory causes the "Value cannot be null" error.
My missing file name was:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\2\6vvdaozf.tmp
But the file name changes on every startup.
So my missing directory name was:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\2
After creating a empty directory with the name "2" in %TEMP% all went back to work fine for me.
I'm not sure the directory name is every time the same, but you can discover your missing file with the process monitor from Sysinternal Tools and filters to "Process Name is ssms.exe" and "Path contains AppData\Local\Temp"

Thank you!! When I run %temp% it takes me to "C:\Users\Admin ...~\AppData\Local\Temp\some random number". At first the random number was 3, after I logged off and back on it was 2. My temp variable in enviromental variables is correct. I looked on another machine
running SQL2008 and temp is correct there. If I try to rename the numbered folder SSMS stops working. Any idea?

Setting Expiration period for Maintenance Plan Backups fails to work in sql server 2008

SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 not showing Maintenance Plan

I do not have the Maintenance Plan listed under the Object Explorer. I am running SQL Server 2008 R2 (that is listed in Control Panel/Programs). When I tried to run the install to check that the management tool is configured I received the
"instance id" error (SQLManagementStudio_X64_ENU.EXE). After doing some reading online I found where some people used the SQLEXPADV_X64_ENU.exe install. This allowed me to see that the Management Tools were installed. I am not an
SQL expert and need to schedule a nightly backup of the database.

SQL Server 2008 Plan Cache maintenance

Hi,
I have a question, please help/suggest me.
I have a production SQL Server 2008 where there are 4 significant stored procedures running in every 15 seconds(Borwser auto refresh) from different users(100+ users connect to site from diff locations)
Sometimes there is no data coming from these stored procedures and application is timing out
So we are running follwoing queries to resolve the issue in productuion server
DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS, DBCC FREEPROCCACHE
Now we are planing to keep this as part of weekend maintenance activity, so please advise what are the parameters we have to check and what is best practices to clear cache?

You can execute sp_recompile to recompile an stored procedure, instead of clear the whole plan cache. sp_recompile does not cause an stored procedure to be recompiled each time it executes. It recompiles just one time, when you execute
sp_recompile.
If you want, you can write a SQL Server Agent Job that calls sp_recompile for each of these four stored procedures.
Cleaning the buffer cache will not improve performance in any case, It maintains a cache of data, it has nothing to do with plan cache.
You should investigate why these stored procedure get slow. May be, statistics are stale. You should update statistics and rebuild indexes. It also may invalidate execution plans

Regular maintenance plan would work. Only thing to remember is that when you create log backup plan, there is a checkbox which says whether it should honor backup preference or not.

Problem with full backup with copy only in maintenance plan sql server 2008

I am starter DBA for sql server in general
I have problem related to backup with maintenance plan in sql server 2008 and 2008 r2
I created maintenance plan to take full back up with copy only option checked, but when I check the back up in backupset table is_copy_only column it shows 0 for databases that I run job for.
I did the same steps on sql server 2012 and I checked backupset table is_copy_only column it shows 1 for databases that I run job for .so it works as it should be
Note: all the servers I mention here are production servers

Copy-only Backup by using GUI ( SSMS) in SQL Server 2008 but it was not available in Maintenance Plan "Back
Up Database Task". Now in SQL Server 2012 It is included in "Back Up Database
Task".

Maintenance work in SharePoint SQL Server

Hi,
We are planing to shut down SQL server due to some maintenance activities. Therefore need to send a downtime notification to users. What is the best way to make the share point service unavailable to users?
- Is that we will directly shutdown the SQL since the maintenance work will be done in it?
or
- SharePoint server's services need to be stopped first ?

You do not need to stop any SharePoint services prior to stopping SQL. SharePoint will of course throw errors in the ULS and Event Logs, but once SQL is restored SharePoint will restore it's connections to the SQL databases.

Ola Hallengren maintenance solution TSQL script not deleting old backup files from my local SQL server

I have looked on Ola's site (https://ola.hallengren.com/frequently-asked-questions.html) and I did see this:
DatabaseBackup is not deleting old backup files. What could the problem be?
Verify that the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent service accounts have full control of the backup directory.
If that directory is a network share, verify that the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent service accounts have full control of the network share.
If you are using a proxy account, verify that the account is a member of the sysadmin server role and that it has full control of the backup directory and network share.
Verify that the file is not locked in the file system; for example, a backup or antivirus software could be locking the file.
DatabaseBackup has been designed not to delete transaction log backups that are newer than the most recent full or differential backup. This could explain why transaction log backups are not being deleted.
I followed these instructions and then I right clicked the "sp_delete_backuphistory" job under "SQL Server Agent > Jobs" folder and clicked the "Start job at step ..." option. The job successfully ran, but my .bak backup
files were still on located on my separate drive partition I use specifically for these backups.
The SQL Server and the SQL Server Agent are both using the same AD account.
Would any of you SQL gurus out there know how to resolve this?

The sp_delete_backuphistory job only deletes the historical info from the backup & restore tables in the msdb database. It does not do anything to the files on disk.

The code to actually purge the backup files from disk is inside the DatabaseBackup stored procedure. It is controlled by using the @CleanupTime parameter for that stored proc. Verify the value for that parameter is low enough to delete your files on disk. The
value is in hours, and I believe the default is 48 hours. The SQL agent job name usually starts with "DatabaseBackup...".
