SQL Server on SAN Environment

Hello Guys, I have a question: Used to run my SQL server DB on local HDs, and we are ready to cluster it on a SAN. DB files will be on the SAN, but how about my local drives? should I keep then? can I just rebuilt the servers and create a RAID 1 for the OS to load, or a RAID 10? what is the standard knowing that the local drives can be used for other purposes, like relocation to other servers (and save money)

The application programming is done on ZOS in COBOL programming language, hence I am looking for some information in this case whether any drivers are available to access the data directly in the application program or do we need to utilize any third party

You cant install SQL Server on any unix platform. It work only on windows.

  • Monitoring/ tuning tool for sql server and os environment

What is a good tool for monitoring/tuning OS and SQL layers.

OS and SQL are different things, and I am not sure what you mean under layers.
To further expand my question, what OS build, what SQL Server edition?
All these have enormous impact on strategy.
Then the question is for what? OLTP need one tuning, DW another.
Monitoring is also a question of budget, how much allowed to spend?
Secondly, this forum is not dedicated to these kinds of questions.

  • Issue importing flat files into SQL server 2008R2

I have csv files that the last column may not have data. SSIS (version 2008R2) will insert the next row's data into the empty cells, which causes my package to fail.
I know this is resolved in 2012 but we are using 2008R2 still. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi sqlBI2014,
After testing the issue that Flat File Connection Manager cannot handle file with uneven number of columns in each row in my SQL Server 2008 R2 environment, I can reproduce it.
Based on my research, the issue is caused by the Column Delimiter gets first preference and then Row delimiter. So the next row data would be inserted in the empty column cell. This is by design in SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2.
Good news is that the issue is fixed in SQL Server Data Tools which comes with SQL Server 2012. In SQL Server 2012, by default, the Flat File Connection Manager always checks for a row delimiter in unquoted data, and starts a new row when a row delimiter
is found. This enables the connection manager to correctly parse files with rows that are missing column fields.
If you still want to fix the issue in SQL Server 2008 R2, there is a sample component posted to the CodePlex that might help you with this:

  • Does a sql server client application needs to be modified to allow it to have benefits of running on a SQL Server 2012 cluster?

I have a client application in c++ which interacts with sql server database. My question is whether I need to make any changes to the client application code to allow it to have the benefits of running on a SQL server 2012 cluster environment.
To elaborate more on my query my concern is for e.g if my application has called an api to execute a sql query and during
the execution of this query the sql server (part of the cluster) goes down then as per my understanding the sql cluster would ensure that another node takes up the task from the current sql server which has gone down. Is this transition transparent to the
client application or in such a case my client application needs to again make a new connection and again execute the query?

    Hello,
Just as Shanky post above, When you connected to a database in an availability group and specify the availability group listener in the connection string, if the availability group fails over, the original connection is broken, your application
should try a new connection after the failover.
So, when connect to an availability group, please try to increasing connection timeout and implementing connection retry logic to increase the probability of successful connection.

    Hi,
you can either install the SQL Server automatically and correctly with the sqlsap.vbs script at
    <drive>:\mssqlserver2005
or you can run the setup.exe from the 'Servers' directory and follow the installation guide for the necessary setting during the setup.

  • Hierarchy monitoring detected that the ConfigMgr SQL Server ports 1433,4022, are not active on Firewall exception

    SMS_HIERARCHY_MANAGER reports (Message ID=3353):
"Hierarchy Monitoring detected that the ConfigMgr SQL Server <fqdn> ports 1433,4022, are not active on Firewall
    exception."
This is a fresh SCCM 2012 environment with no firewall active. SQL is installed on the same server as SCCM 2012.  Is there a way to fix this without enabling the firewall?

    Check this out
    Issue:
ConfigMgr logs the error even though Windows Firewall is disabled or it is enabled and all exceptions are added to SQL Server(s).
Environment: I had an environment  consist of a two node SQL Cluster hosting ConfigMgr database and a separate ConfigMgr primary site server
    Resolution:
Windows firewall service must be started on both SQL nodes and ConfigMgr itself . As soon as the service is started exceptions for TCP 1433 and 4022 must be added to SQL nodes firewall.
After that the firewall profiles can be disabled using:
netsh advf set allp state off
This is true but if you disable the firewall even thought you have opened the Firewall port then disabled the firewall. The status message will continue to be generated and your site server will still be in an error state.
Notice that I said "disabled" and not "turn off".

  • Replication for High Write SQL Server Environment

    Hello everybody,
Long-time reader, first time writer ;-).
We have been analyzing our SQL environment with our vendor and wanted to reach out to the community to ask for advice.  Our main solution takes in large files daily and performs a series of logic that requires heavy writes to the disk upon import --
BCP or SSIS is not an option.  We have a bare metal SQL server that is configured which handles the import of the largest files in three hours.  We are looking to possibly use virtualization and  SQL 2014 to provide a better disaster recovery
    option.
We are working through a proof of concept with our hosting provider that has SQL running in a VMWare virtual environment using SAN disk as the main disk.  During our tests, the file that takes three hours to import takes around six hours in the virtual
environment.  Their engineers are looking at speeding up the SAN, but I would like to have an alternative.
Could I do something similar to the following:  have a bare metal server act as the main import server, and then replicate the data to servers that are virtualized?  I believe there is an always on feature with SQL 2014 which would provide automatic
switch over in case of failure.  How would you suggest I configure my environment to handle this?  Would it be make sense to have the bare metal server kick off a Tlog transfer after the file is imported to the virtualized environment?  If so,
    how would that look?
Thank you very much, in advance, for you advice!!!!!

    >have a bare metal server act as the main import server, and then replicate the data to servers that are virtualized?  I believe there is an always on feature with SQL 2014 which would provide automatic switch over in case of failure.
    Yes.  That would be
AlwaysOn Availibility Groups. In an AG all the transaction log records written to the primary database's log file are copied to the secondary replicas as well.  The AG can't fail over automatically unless the secondary replica is synchronized.
In your scenario it will probably take additional time to replicate the log records and apply them on the secondary, so you would not have automatic failover during that window.
You could switch the replica from Sync to Async mode during the load window, and then back to Sync mode after.
    >Would it be make sense to have the bare metal server kick off a Tlog transfer after the file is imported to the virtualized environment?
You could do this too, with Log Shipping.  The VM would be even farther behind the primary.

  • Need to convert DTS packages to SQL Server 2012 environment.

    Hi Friends,
As Part of the Project Requirement,we need to convert DTS packages to SQL Server 2012 environment.
    Please sugest me best approach.
    Thanks

Best approach is to re-design the packages in SSIS 2012 directy if it is feasible. Because most of the DTS feaures are discontinued and also you will have to clean up all errors that you are going to get after migration.
Discontinued Integration Services Functionality in SQL Server 2012
Otherwise you need to migrate it first to 2008R2 and then 2012 version.

  • SQL SERVER - Error while executing SSIS package on specific environment : Connection manager - The specified module could not be found

I have deployed my SSIS packages on SQL 2008 server.
I have a .bat file which will invoke these packages and also the bat file is placed in the server where the SSIS packages are deployed.
    Scenario 1:
I double clicked on the bat file to invoke the SSIS packages and ; this executed successfully
    Scenario 2:
    I have used the IBM Tivoli work scheduler(TWS)  to invoke the bat file which in tern will invoke the ssis packges;
but when i do this i am getting the below error
     Code: 0x8007007E
Source: SSIS_Master_Event_Data_Transfer Connection manager "Config DB"
Description: The specified module could not be found.
Config BD is a connection manager which will get the connection string from the config file of the SSIS package.
Please help me to resolve this issue.
    Regards,
    Prakash

Check you TWS jobmanrc.cmd configuration file.   You may need to add a PATH environment variable in that file that includes your SQL Server file locations.   When TWS jobs are executed, they may not be executing with the same
PATH variable as when you execute the SSIS outside of TWS.

  • Problem with SQL Server Reporting Services 2012 SP1 (SSRS) and SharePoint 2013 in a Multi-tenanted environment

    Hi All,
I'm working on what appears to be a permissions issue with SSRS in a multi-tenented SharePoint 2013 environment.
As part of my troubleshooting I've ignored the multitenented web application for the time being and stood up a dedicated web application with it's own host header called reporting.<domain>.local. I've created a site collection and added a Doc Library
called Reporting.. And then the content types, made sure the features are up and everything tests ok. I mention this because it's not that I can't get this working.. I can't get this working in a Web Application configured for multi-tenancy running Host Named
    Site Collections.
When I try redoing the above on a Tenant site I get the following:
Sorry, something went wrong The permissions granted to user '<domain>\bprice' are insufficient for performing this operation. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.AccessDeniedException: The permissions granted to user '<DOMAIN>\bprice'
are insufficient for performing this operation.
    Correlation ID: 7f23ef9c-4b6a-7007-7e6f-0b32c731f7ed
The problem here is that my account is a sysadmin in SQL, a local admin on all servers, a domain admin in AD and finally a Farm Admin in SharePoint. Access denied on my account is crazy. So it's unlikely to be perms in the traditional sence, more likely a denial
by implication (as though I have not been granted access to something)
When filtering the ULS Logs for that correlation ID I see the following log entries:
    WcfReceiveRequest: LocalAddress: 'http://homsssrs001. <domain>.local:32843/04560e49d2664b64bc12d9ce7bc9f885/ReportingWebService.svc' Channel: 'System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel' Action: 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2011/06/01/ReportServer/Management/GetDataSourceContents'

    Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.AccessDeniedException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.AccessDeniedException: The permissions granted to user '<DOMAIN>\bprice' are insufficient for performing this operation.;
A quick google on what I consider the most important of the above log errors (#5 mentioning Sitesubscription of the context site) returns:
    http://thesharepointfarm.com/2014/10/reporting-services-feature-pack/
We aren't using feature packs at the moment. As far as I understand it all features are available to all subscriptions.
Has anyone seen this issue? Can anyone point in the correct direction? There must be a config that's specific to SSRS and Multi-tenancy that I've overlooked but I genuinely can't get to the bottom of this.
    Kind Regards & Many Thanks
    Brett

  • Upgrade to SQL server 2005 - Point Production Environment to New Server?

We have Essbase, Workspace, EAS, EIS, FR, WA environment in Production, supporting SQL server databases are on ServerA which has all these databases in SQL server 2000. The corporate standard is moving to SQL server 2005, and the SQL server DBA has copied the supporting dbs to ServerB for testing.
Is "pointing" to ServerB an option, or do the BI+ components have to be redeployed? Any help or pointing in the right direction would be appreciated.

    Stephanie,
There could be schema changes between 2000 and 2005 you may want to check the support matrix to ensure your version of Hyperion is supported with SQL 2005.
Best bet is to back up the business rules, fr reports and then configure the system to the new databases on the SQL 2005 box then reimport the items.
