SQL Server Unicode 'N' prefix & Prepared Statements

Hi,
I'm using jsp, Tomcat 4.1, MSDE (SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition), SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC
to develop a simple data entry form.
I was trying to insert a unicode string from a jsp page (input) to an SQL Server ntext field.
My jsp includes the the definitions given below:
<%@ page language = "java" contentType="text/html; charset=utf-8" pageEncoding="cp1254" import = "java.util.*, java.sql.*, java.text.*, java.io.*,java.lang.*" %>
<%request.setCharacterEncoding("utf-8");%>
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
I executed a samlpe query INSERT INTO MyTable VALUES (N'Some Unicode String like &#351;&#350;&#304;&#305;&#287;&#286; ')
It worked well but if the unicode string includes any apostrophe, it fails.
So I decided to use a prepared statement.
My code sample is as follows.
String driver="sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver";
Sring CURL="jdbc:odbc:portDb"; //ODBC connection
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection( CURL, un, pw );
con.setAutoCommit(false);
String sq= "INSERT INTO MyTable VALUES ?);
String udata="Some Unicode String like &#351;&#350;&#304;&#305;&#287;&#286; ";
PreparedStatement pstmt=con.prepareStatement(sq, ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_SENSITIVE,ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);
//Then I tried some different methods
1) pstmt.setString(1, udata);
//This inserts data as. "Some Unicode String like sSIigG"
2) pstmt.setString(1, new String(udata.getBytes("utf-8"),"utf-8"));
//This inserts data as. "Some Unicode String like sSIigG"
byte[] bytes;
InputStream is;
bytes = udata.getBytes();
is = new java.io.ByteArrayInputStream(bytes);
3) pstmt.setUnicodeStream(1, is, bytes.length); //This inserts some strange characters
4) pstmt.setAsciiStream(1, is, bytes.length); //This inserts some strange characters
Reader dtxt;
dtxt=new StringReader(udata.toString());
5) pstmt.setCharacterStream(1, dtxt, udata.length()); //This inserts some strange characters
pstmt.executeUpdate();
con.commit();
con.close();
Even I tried a callable statement using an sqlserver stored procedure.
My code samples which is given above doesn't seem to insert the unicode string to the database truly.
Is there a way to use the SQL Server National 'N' prefix in a prepared statement.
or any suggestions to this problem.
NOT: I can not insert especially these characters which is given below (codepage: cp1254)
Alt+0222 Latin Capital Letter S with cedilla (&#350;)
Alt+0254 Latin Small Letter s with cedilla (&#351;)
Alt+0221 Latin Capital Letter I with a dot above (&#304;)
Alt+0253 Latin Small Letter Dotless i (&#305;)
Alt+0240 Latin Small Letter g with breve (&#287;)
Alt+0208 Latin Capital Letter G with breve (&#286;)
Thanks in Advance,

I really don't know what might be happening. My suggestion (although I might get bashed for this) is to switch to another JDBC driver and see what happens.
I'm one of the developers of the jTDS JDBC Driver. You could also try the JDBC-ODBC bridge (but as far as I know there is no way to specify Unicode/non-Unicode strings for the bridge) or a commercial driver.

  • MS SQL Server 7 - Performance of Prepared Statements and Stored Procedures

    Hello All,
    Our team is currently tuning an application running on WL 5.1 SP 10 with a MS
    SQL Server 7 DB that it accesses via the WebLogic jConnect drivers. The application
    uses Prepared Statements for all types of database operations (selects, updates,
    inserts, etc.) and we have noticed that a great deal of the DB host's resources
    are consumed by the parsing of these statements. Our thought was to convert many
    of these Prepared Statements to Stored Procedures with the idea that the parsing
    overhead would be eliminated. In spite of all this, I have read that because
    of the way that the jConnect drivers are implemented for MS SQL Server, Prepared
    Statments are actually SLOWER than straight SQL because of the way that parameter
    values are converted. Does this also apply to Stored Procedures??? If anyone
    can give me an answer, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks in advance!Hi. Stored procedures may help, but you can also try MS's new free type-4
    driver,
    which does use DBMS optimizations to make PreparedStatements run faster.

    Thanks Joe! I also wanted to know if setting the statement cache (assuming that
    this feature is available in WL 5.1 SP 10) will give a boost for both Prepared Statements
    and stored procs called via Callable Statements. Pretty much all of the Prepared
    Statements that we are replacing are executed from entity bean transactions.
    Thanks again

  • ? in SQL Queries and not using prepared statements

    Using EclipseLink 1.1.1
    Prepared Statements are disabled
    In our production server something went wrong and one of our Read Queries started erroring. A DatabaseException was thrown and we log the "getQuery.getSQLString()" statement. We found this query in the logs:

    Notice the values weren't entered into the where clause. We had to bounce the application to fix the problem. I've never seen this before. I've added more debugging statements to the code - so if this happens again in the future I'll have more information to report on. In the mean time I'm wondering if anyone else has every seen a problem of this nature.

    Database error due to invalid SQL statement.
    I don't have a stack, we were catching the exception and not printing the stack :(
    Like I mentioned in my first post, I added more debugging code (e.printStackTrace()). I understand this is hard to track down without more information. I was just hoping you guys had seen something like this before and had any insight. Like I mentioned before: this is on our production server. I've never seen this type of error before. That particular server (we run in a cluster mode) had been up for several days and then started generating that error. IT bounced the node and everything went back to normal. We have been using toplink for about 5 years now and have never seen this problem, until August 3rd 2009. The only thing that has changed recently is our migration from toplink 10 to EclipseLink. I was wondering if anyone knows if anything had changed in EclipseLink/toplink 11 with the generation of SQL queries.
    I'll keep looking. There is more debugging code in there now. Since the error was "Database error due to invalid SQL statement" this implies the SQL was generated, exited that part of the code and was sent to the db where it failed. I'm afraid the printStackTrace won't help if this error happens again.

  • Prepared Statement, executing  SELECT TOP in Ms Access

    I'm having the following problem. I built an application fetching data without any problem from MS SQL Server, this was using prepared statements. Now i'm having this strange problem with the following query:
    SELECT TOP 1 *
    FROM table
    WHERE appliance_id = ?
    AND ttimestamp_initpk <= ?
    AND ((Type = ?) OR (Type = ?) OR (Type = ?) OR (Type = ?) OR (Type = ?) OR (Type = ?))
    ORDER BY ttimestamp_initpk DESC
    While on SQL Server this fetches just a record, on MS Access it fetches the whole set of records without worrying about TOP instruction.
    That is, it acts like a SELECT * FROM, and this slows down runtime behaviour.
    I'm using sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver, is it the problem?
    Thanks, Mirko

    Thanks for your answer, but i'm not sure this is the reason.
    I made one more test: i wrote a .Net application connecting to a MS Access using an ODBC connection. SELECT TOP statement is working fine, so i think i'll try another JDBC driver. Any other solution??
    Thanks,
    Mirko

  • Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unknown token received from SQL Server [SQLSTATE HY000] String data, right truncation [SQLSTATE 01004] [SQLSTATE 08S01] error

    I'm looking for some general guidance on this complete error:
    Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unknown token received from SQL Server [SQLSTATE HY000]
    String data, right truncation [SQLSTATE 01004]
    Msg 16389, Sev 16, State 1: The connection is no longer usable because the server response for a previously executed statement was incorrectly formatted. [SQLSTATE 08S01]
    This error is caused by a SQL Agent Job, but it does not always occur. I understand this could be an issue with SQL dropping the connection, but what is the best way to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Hi philliptackett77,
    It would be more helpful for troubleshooting the issue if you post the SQL Server error log and SQL Server version. Additionally, please state what purpose of using the agent job.
    Based on my research, [SQLSTATE 08S01] error means communication link failure. If the executed statement returns invalid value in the job, the connection between server and client will fail. This error could be caused by the error of [SQLSTATE HY000] and
    [SQLSTATE 01004]. I’d like to share my knowledge about these errors as below.
    Quote: String data, right truncation [SQLSTATE 01004]
    This error could occur when passing data whose length is larger than the received object,and the passed value is truncated, and returns invalid value. So please check if the data type of the objects are identical and the length of passed value is not larger
    than the received object.
    Quote: Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unknown token received from SQL Server [SQLSTATE HY000]
    The error could occur in the two cases below.
    1. If you use SQL Server version 6.50, and execute the cursor in the job step, set the statement options to use a server-side cursor and prepare a select statement on a SQL Server system table. The first execution of the select creates the cursor successfully.
    After you close this cursor, if you execute the prepared statement again, the error could occur.
    I recommend you to apply the latest service pack firstly. If the error still occurs, you could change your code by using a forward-only cursor instead of a static, keyset, or dynamic cursor on the system tables. If a forward-only cursor is unacceptable,
    prepare the select statement again on the system table and execute it to create a server-side cursor. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/151693/en-us
    2. The TDS stream from the server is invalid when transfer data between a database server and a client. This error is typically caused by a problem on the server. For more information about errors above, please refer to the article:

  • Auto update stats disabled for a user Database in Sql server

    While trying to improve the performance of few queries, we found via execution plan that there were lot of Index/Clustered index seeks. Therefore:
    First thing we did, was to check our Re-indexing and update stats job which runs weekly for this user DB ( Around 400 GB in size and is used 24*5). The job was running fine.
    Later when we ran SP_Blitz, we came to know that auto-update-stats is disabled for this user DB. We expected this to be a possible cause and change it from false to TRUE(Auto update stats)
    Also, per SP_blitz there are user-created statistics for this DB. When ran the query to check how many, we saw around 7K user stats out there.
    So my question would be 1) setting the Auto update stats to TRUE would require a reboot or once changed i need to track the performance and 2) Should we consider dropping those user created stats or manually look into them one by one.
    How should we proceed on this, please suggest, thanks!

    There may be good reasons for having auto-stats off, but those cases are not very common. It makes a little more sense to turn if off on table level. An example of the latter is a relatively small table, say < 100000 rows where not many new rows are added,
    but the existing rows are being updated frequently. This will trigger autostats, but probably without much benefit.
    But if you have a system which is very busy during peak times, you may not want autostats take resources during those hours. But if you turn off autostats, you will need to make sure that stats are updated in some other fashion.
    Here is a query that you can use review when your statistics last were updated:
    SELECT o.name, s.name, stats_date(o.object_id, s.stats_id) AS lastupdated
    FROM   sys.objects o
    JOIN   sys.stats s ON s.object_id = o.object_id
    --WHERE  s.user_created = 1
    ORDER BY lastupdated
    7000 user-created statistics sounds a little excessive, but I guess they were added to compensate for the autostats that SQL Server were not permitted to create. I would not recommend dropping these statistics, as SQL Server would spend cycles on recreating
    them.
    You should not have to restart SQL Server for the Auto-update stats setting to take effect; it takes effect immediately.

  • Set SPN for a local SQL Server 2008 R2 Express database used for local "Offline Mode" application

    Hi - I have tried searching the web for tips on this situation. Basically, I am trying to recreate a previous employee's client Image. This image is used for one of our companies client application that features and "Offline Mode" where it connects
    (Using Kerberos) to the local DB instead of the central DB server.
    The custom image connects without issue. I cannot seem to recreate his configuration. I am sure of these things:
    - Both images are using the same SQL Server 2008 R2 Express version.
    - Both images have the same user accounts setup.
    - Both images have "Remote Connections" setup with TCP/IP enabled in the Configuration Manager.
    - Both images are joined to the same Domain server currently.
    - Both images has the SQLServer service set to use "NETWORK SERVICE" account.
    This is the error message I get when SQL starts up for the non-working image:
    The SQL Network Interface library could not register the Service Principal Name (SPN) for the SQL Server service. Error: 0x54b, state: 3. Failure to register an SPN may
    cause integrated authentication to fall back to NTLM instead of Kerberos. This is an informational message. Further action is only required if Kerberos authentication is required by authentication policies.
    Thank you for any assistance given.

    Hi Gribbled,
    Could you please change the SQL Server Service to run under 'LocalSystem' account and restart SQL Server? Then check if the error still occurs. When the SQL Server service account is configured to use the LocalSystem account, the server will automatically
    publish the SPN.
    Alternatively, to work around this issue, you can manually create the SPN for the SQL Server Service account  using the SETSPN tool. For more details, please review this
    blog.

  • Running explain plan on a prepared statement

    I'm using IBatis to run queries against an Oracle database. IBatis runs the queries as prepared statements. I want to run explain plan on the prepared statements.
    I already have a shim -- a proxy java.sql.Connection object -- that takes the SQL used to create a prepared statement (e.g., "select a, b, c from table d where c = ?"), returns a proxy java.sql.PreparedStatement, and then on the PreparedStatement's execute(), interpolates the bound parameters into the SQL statement, and runs Explain Plan on that (e.g, preparedStatement.setInt(5) is called, followed by preparedStatement.execute(), which results in my proxy running "explain plan for select a, b, c from table d where c = 5;")
    Using Spring configuration, I can transparently insert the shim and get explain plans for all queries run through that Connection.
    The problem is this: I'm explaining the plan for the SQL with the bound parameters, not necessarily the SQL run for the prepared statement.
    Assume that in the above example, there exists an index on column c in table d, and that 5% of d's rows have the value 1, 15% have the value 2, and 80% have the value 3.
    For "select a, b, c from table d where c = 1", Oracle will use the index. But for "select a, b, c from table d where c = 3", Oracle will do a full table scan.
    What I want to know is what Oracle will do for "select a, b, c from table d where c = ?" when "?" is an unknown, arbitrary value subsequently bound to 1 or to 3.
    As I understand it, the query plan for a prepared statement is done once, when the prepared statement is created. At execute time (as I understand it), the query plan is not reformulated based on the actual bound values (though partition pruning is recalculated).
    So how can I find out what query plan is actually be used for prepred statement?
    Thanks.

    I already have a shim -- a proxy java.sql.Connection object -- that takes the SQL used to create a prepared statement I believe explain plan is part of PL/SQL rather than external to it.
    As such you can pass it via a prepared statement. It is just a matter of getting the syntax correct. And of course collecting the result.
    The syntax is going to be be something like the following. You would use it just like you use the existing sql.
    begin
       select ... from ... where c = ?;
    endThe result might be returned a result sets (plural). If so you would need to code appropriately for that.

  • Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services Error Code = 0x80040E05

    I've been running a package for 6 months without any issues that pulls data from a cube via MDX and moves it to a database.
    We've recently moved to a new server x64 and the connections all succeed but at runtime (in 64 = T&F) I get the following error:
    [SRC AdExchange [87]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR.  An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E05.

    I've installed SQL_AS_OLEDB, SQL_AS_ADOMD from Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 SP1 Feature Pack
    Why is my connection failing?

    The server has a 10Gbps network connection.
    I've installed CU6 for SQL Server 2012 SP1
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2874879/en-us#hfi
    I'm still getting the same error at runtime in BIDS:

  • Running INSERT into SQL Server using Heterogeneous Services

    I am running into a show stopping issue trying to insert into a SQL Server table via Oracle.
    Basically, I have my Heterogeneous Services set up correctly and I am able to hit the SQL Server database with my INSERT statement. But what is happening is I seem to be manually controlly row locks. I believe HS is issuing the following to the server before my INSERT statement is run:
    SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED
    SET IMPLICIT_TRANSACTIONS ON
    Also, it does not seem that I ever issue the COMMIT TRANSACTION
    command. This leaves the row locked forever... unable to complete the
    insert generating an error and not inserting my record.
    I would GREATLY appreciate any help you could provide, this is a critical issue.
    Thanks in advance,
