SQL statement in Oracle

As I know in SQL server, i can create a field called customer name, can be two words. But in the SQL statement I need to use double quote to quote the customer name, such like: select * from "customer name"
Can Oracle accept two words field name or table name. If Yes, then do I need to use double quote, or single quote or other things?

However, most DBAs (even MS SQL Server ones) will tell you that that is bad form.
And of course the reason for doing that should never be because those field names are being displayed. Displaying field names breaks every model that seperates data from display (GUI.)

  • Adding a field to an sql statement in Oracle Reports error ORA-00933

We have been requested to add a field that already exists in the table referred to by the sql statement in Oracle Reports Builder. The report was set up by a consultant about 3 yrs ago and we don't really have much skill in this area. What is happening when I try to modify the SQL statement, either adding a field or deleting a field to the SELECT statement, causes an error message preventing the statement from being saved. The only way out of the error message is to click Cancel. The error message is
    ORA-00933:SQL command not properly ended
    ORDER BY Program ==> NAME
Even adding or deleting a space anywhere in the SQL statement causes the error (not adding any new fields). A coworker found that if we comment out the ORDER BY, the statement will accept the new field in the SELECT section, however then we lose the order by functionality. I would like to add one additional field before the FROM. Not sure if any additional data are needed. Thank you.

    Hi Denis,
I tried your suggestion. The good thing is that adding the comma allowed me to be able to add a.campus to the select statement, unfortunately, another error message happened.
    ORA-00936: missing expression SELECT p . person_uid PIDM_KEY ,

CASE WHEN : P_group_by = 'PROGRAM THEN a I started over and tried only putting in the comma and get the same message even though I didn't add campus. After that, removed the comma which led to the ORA-00933 error message. So once again, I had to close the file without saving, in order for the report to run at all.

    Folks,
Hello. I have just installed Oracle Database 11gR1 and login to Database Control page. There are 4 tabs on the top: Database, Setup, Preference, Help and Logout.
I just create a table "table1" in "Database" tap. But I don't see anywhere to run SQL statement such as Select, Insert, Update.
Can any folk tell me where to run SQL statements in Oracle Database 11gR1 ?

You can run from a terminal or install an SQL client and connect from there.

Assuming you have an oracle OS user on Linux you can try typing sqlplus at you OS command prompt. Generally you will have a .bash_profile with setting like this:

  • Bind variables in DB Connect SQL Statement in Oracle

We are looking for ways to improve performance of DB Connect extract from an Oracle database.
An example command that is created by the Info-Package using a DB-Connect:
    Current
    SELECT "A", "B", "C", "D", "E", "F", "G", "H"
    FROM "GSF_BW"."V_BW_FORCAST_FACT"
    WHERE ("A" = '200904') AND ("B" BETWEEN '100801' AND '101412')
The calculated cost (calculated by Oracle Optimizer) is 25.145
Oracle recommends the usage of bind-variables.
In that case the Statement would need to look like:
    SELECT "A", "B", "C", "D", "E", "F", "G", "H"
    FROM "GSF_BW"."V_BW_FORCAST_FACT"
    WHERE ("PG0R_SUBD" = :b1) AND ("ZCALMONTH" BETWEEN :b2 AND :b3)
This would reduce the cost to 11.000 which is 40% of the statement before.
My question now is: Can anything be done to influence the generation of the SQL statement to make it better performing?

    Hi,
It is always better to test yourself. Using bind variable is always a good practice and optimizer avoids hard parsing (soft parsing will be done here) if bind variables are used.
So yes, if this function is being executed several times frequently then second execution onwards it may run faster.
If you want to see actually what is happening behind it, trace it (using tkprof) and see the result.
See the below link to know more about SQL TRACE and tkprof.

  • How to execute multiple sql statements in oracle?

I want to execute multiple statements in a single transaction in oracle. Following are my queries:

    SigCle ,
    Here's an example that executes 3 statements;
    begin insert into foo values(1); insert into foo values(2); insert into foo values(3); end;
    923354,
The block doesn't compile because temp_table doesn't exist at the point you're trying to compile the anonymous block. I'd recommend re-reading the doc link and forum link provided to get a better understanding of how temp tables work, as it's simply different with Oracle. You don't create Oracle temporary tables on the fly; you create them ahead of time and then just use them. The data itself is already specific to a particular session; you don't create and drop the table each time.
Also, you can't just "select * from table" in plsql. The results have to GO SOMEWHERE. Usually you'd either open a cursor and process it in the block, or send out a ref cursor if you want to send the data to a client side app. The ref cursor data wouldn't actually be fetched until the block completes though, so you'd need to use ON COMMIT PRESERVE ROWS, which would also mean you'd need to clean up the data yourself (delete the data from the table when you're done with it).
    Corrections/comments welcome.

  • A very slow select with sub selects sql statement on Oracle

    Hi,
I'm moving an application from MySql to Oracle. The following select were very efficiently executed in MySql. In oracle its slow like a snail.
Do anyone have a hint on how to speed it up?
The slow part is the four sub selects in the select part. Removing them makes the select about 50 times faster on Oracle.

  • How to insert 22.5K rows in one sql statement in Oracle

    Hi Gurus,
I have a one table with one column. I require to input 22.5k numbers example "08323459" in that table. Can anyone tell me how to insert those 22.5K numbers with one sql command.
I am using PL/SQL client. And oracle version is 11G.

If you have an Excel file, the simplest approach is generally to save the file as a CSV, copy it to the database server, create an external table that exposes the file as a table, and then write your INSERT by selecting the data from the external table.
    INSERT INTO permanent_table( column_name )
      SELECT column_name
FROM external_tableAssuming you have SQL*Loader installed on your client machine, you could also use SQL*Loader to read the data in the file and load it into the database table.

  • Oracle Date in SQL Statement.

    Hello,
We are having performance issues with some reports using conditions on date fields in the Record Selection Formula. Our application does not use the time portion of the date fields very often. When Crystal Reports builds the SQL statement to Oracle it uses a range condition to include all the possible time values. This practice makes a big difference compared to a direct condition
         Example:   SELECT "TABLE_A"."ID"
                           FROM   "TABLE_A"
                           WHERE  ("TABLE_A"."DT">= TO_DATE('2011-03-31 00:00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') AND
                                          "TABLE_A"."DT"< TO_DATE('2011-04-01 00:00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'))
Is there a way to tell Crystal not to perform range validation on dates?
We would like to have a SQL Statment that looks like:
                           SELECT "TABLE_A"."ID"
                           FROM   "TABLE_A"
                           WHERE  ("TABLE_A"."DT" = TO_DATE('2011-03-31'))
We are on Oracle 11 with Crystal Report for VS2010 Sp1.
    Thank you.
    Charles

Have a look at the kbase below. I think this is a throwback to the fact that we can't handle the milliseconds in the DateTime. So, in order to ensure we get the correct data we search on a range plus one second of what you asked for.

I am using Jboss 2.44 with tomcat3.2.3, and I get deployment problems when using jdk1.5, I also tried JBoss 4 but I also have lots of problems with that.
I have this huge system developed long time ago. I have problems with printing in jdk1.3 so upgrade to 1.4 or higher will fix the printing. Upgrading to jdk1.5 and JBoss 4 will need lots of rewrite which is not an option.
So to me it seems easier if I keep using jboss2.44 and tomcat 3.2.3 but just upgrade to JDK 1.4. All off this is just because jdk1.3.1 has printing bugs.
Bushwack, I am ding exactly like you are, the only difference is, ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE and I used , ResultSet.CONCUR_READONLY. But I tried and still the same error.
I will try using a new JDBC driver, hope it works, I am just struggling to find a free one
