Squeaky MacBook hinge and hinge is also loose?

My MacBook Pro is 8 months old, the past two months I have noticed that whenever I open or shut my screen it makes a clear squeaking noise. I am new to Mac's and my friend (who is much more experienced with Apple products) told me it's not normal and to book an appointment with the Genius Bar. Appointment is now booked but on closer inspection I have noticed that when my Mac is closed, the black hinge easily slides left to right. Do you think this will be able to be fixed as I am still under my one year warranty?

I haven't heard of your contrast issue (Glad you checked that in Universal Access) but I have heard of the hinges on the Macbook having some issue once in a while. The connections between the Logic Board and screen are obviously in those hinges. If they are frayed, pinching, whatever, that can cause an issue like you're having.
I'm glad you have AppleCare, because screen repair/replacements aren't cheap. Don't forget, if your Apple Service Provider is saying it'll take too long to do a repair on-site you can still call AppleCare directly and you can mail-in your machine. Turn-around time takes anywhere from 4-10 days... but one can usually expect it to come back sooner than later.

  • I installed hotspot shield on my 2009 macbook pro and all **** has broken loose on my computer in my attempts to rid my system of the app. Restoring to factory settings seems the only viable option. How do I do this?

I purchased the elite version of Hotspot Shield VPN only to found it is a wothless scam that drags down your computer. Unfortuantley its been nothing but a nightmare to get it out of my computer. Spents over a week combing through threads on what to do and amy ahve done more damage than anything else. It would appear that restoring my computer to its factory settings is the best thing in my current situation. Ive already lost all my photos and everything else of relevance, at least I hope, I have backed up in on an external disk. Could someone please guide me through this process? i just want to be done with this horribly frustrating situation. Thank you!

    Hey jollygreen666,
If you're ready to do a full restore on your computer, this is how you should go about it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243 - Erase and Install
    1. Power down your computer.
    2. Boot your computer holding either Command + R or Option. If you hold option you should see Macintosh HD and Recovery HD. Click on Recovery HD and press the arrow underneath to boot to recovery. If you hold Command + R you will go straight into recovery.
    3. To do a clean install, in the list of utilities, click Disk Utility. In disk Utility, you will see Macintosh HD or whatever you have named your hard drive.
    4. Click on Macintosh HD, and you'll see tabs along the top of disk utility. Press the Erase tab.
    5. For the Format box, select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). In the name box you can leave Macintosh HD.
    6. Press Erase in the bottom right corner.
At this point you will have a blank hard drive, and you will be able to reinstall Mavericks clean without any extra data. To do so you would:
    1. Exit Disk Utility.
    2. In the menu, select Reinstall Mac OS X.
    3. Follow the prompts to reinstall OS X, and when it asks you where you want to install it, press Macintosh HD.
This will leave you with a clean install of Mavericks.
Since you don't know how deep this software has gone, I would suggest you manually migrate your data back over from your external hard drive to prevent files from the software from showing up again.
    Good luck!

  • 2008 Macbook Air Screen Hinge Problem

Hi all, so my 2008 Macbook Air's hinge got a little loose, and I was told Apple would replace it for free, so I took it to them. HUGE MISTAKE. After the hinge was replaced the screen didn't fully line up when the laptop was closed and the screen started going out like once every 2 weeks, but only for like a tenth of a second so I never really thought it was a problem. It never did this before Apple fixed the loose hinge. About 6 months after the hinge was replaced, it started doing it daily, and shortly after that it did it every time I open the laptop, so now it officially is a problem for me. I brought it back to Apple and they told me that I would have to pay for an expensive new repair or buy a new laptop, even after I explained to them that the laptop was perfectly fine before they replaced the hinge. They said I should have come within 3 months, but I was back at school and it was not a problem at all then, nor did I think it would be. I brought it to a 3rd party repair shop and they did not open the laptop but they said it looks like the screen cable is being pinched by the new hinge since it is not lined up perfectly. Is there anything that can be done or do I have to buy a new laptop?

I'm a college student with no car or Apple store nearby and the laptop was shipped back to me because of that. If I had to go another week without a laptop that would have been disasterous, but more importantly I had no way of knowing it would stop working or that the slight misalignment was anything other than cosmetic, I'm no tech genius and I clearly wasn't the one who put the laptop together wrong. It wasn't even my fault the hinge got loose in the first place! Sigh, I suppose if they can't make this right I hope I can learn to use Windows.

  • Macbook pro left-hinge gap!!

Is it normal for most macbook pros to have a slight gap on the left- hinge between the black part and silver. The right side is fine and the hinge is continuous with the aluminum body whereas the left side hinge is not. Also, I have noticed when picking up my macbook an occaisonal pop or click noise coming from the bottom. Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated!! (P.S. I have only had my 13 inch macbook pro for nearly 2 weeks)
    Not Normal Left-Side Hinge (Gap)
Normal Right Side Hinge (no gap)

    Hi Jordan,
I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro and it arrived with the exact same condition as yours.
Truth is I took no notice with it, guess it was probably just my piece that was like that.
After a couple of months, the hinge, the black part started to move about, sideways. It could move due to the gap that was already present. The creaking hinge sound you hear, yes that's an indication of the problem. Its not the hard drive shutting down at all.
A year and a half later, the screen begin to peel away from the unibody surface, the metal surface that hold the screen together. It all happened and started from the left side. Closing the lid now showed a significant gap on the left side near the hinge.
2 years and 10 months after I got my Macbook Pro, the hinge has snapped. The screen has peeled signifcantly away from the unibody surface on the left side and now my right side is also affected.
I can only use my Macbook Pro with the wall supporting my screen now.
I implore you to return your Macbook, accept no flaws with the hinges at all.
Email me at [email protected] if you like to know more, or want to see pictures even.

  • HP's Low Grade Hinges and Warranty Issue.

Hello,   HP Area Heads,  Envy Notebook Division Heads,  Support Division Heads  and CEO.
I regret to say that perhaps buying an HP Envy laptop worth Rs, 1,15,000/-  will turn out to be my big mistake. I never thought that HP would use a LOW Grade material for Hinges that would break on its own within less then 5 months of usage.    If i calculate ,  I work 5 days a week and 5 months = 100 days.  Even if i open and close laptop twice every day = 200 times.      WOW  just 200 times and Left Hinges breaks on its own and yet HP disagrees to accept its poor quality.
HP Enginner says it won't be coverd under Warranty,  where as your Case Manager Mr. Pratheesh C R  says
    1.  Your laptop is Covered under repair only warranty
    2.  and we will repair this for free of cost as an exception.
Now I have multiple objections to this.  I can send you several links available on google and youtube videos, which confims that HP laptops has known issue with Left Hinges.
    1.  So even if you repair it, there are chances that it might break again, due to your poor quality of Hinges.  which means there is big expenses waiting if this happens again.
    2. What's the use of buying an extended Warranty of 2yrs, if these things are not covered within it. ( Now let me clarify, I am not saying that if i drop the laptop or spill coffee over it and then asking you to repair it free of cost.     I am asking you  because its broken on its own due to poor quality and you have known issue with your left hinges)
    3. A simple hinges broken, its repair procedure requires a good amount of parts replacement Top Cover, Bottom Enclosure and also disassembling the laptop to fix the hinges, This is very painful, no one likes a postmortem on his new laptop.   This also leaves a possibility that other parts may get damaged in the process.
There is only two ways, that could convince me.
    1.   Either replace your faulty product and give me a new laptop.
    OR
    2. Take the responsibility of fixing hinges when ever is broken in my 2yrs extended Warranty period free of cost.
by adding me to ADP coverage for my exended period of warranty.  ( Remember I am not asking you to do any favour if i drop the laptop or spill coffee over it.  )
This way, i would be relaxed and would not be worring about quality of hinges and what if after fixing it breaks away again on its own.
Remember laptop is worth Rs, 1,15,000/- .  Its brought from my hard earned money.  I feel too much of pain.
    Regards
    Jignesh.

Costing Indian Rupees : 1,15,000/-    One Lakh, fifteen thousand.
Such a high value PC and Hinges gets broken just within 6 months.  This is a case of HP poor quality product.
Yet as per HP Support Service Partner "Jabil Center", Andheri Area, Mumbai City,  says that this is considered as damage by customer and it cannot be covered under warranty.
As per them, I have to claim under ADP and for that I have to prove that it was Accidental Damage,  which is again  subject to HP approval.
(Now I am wondering, was choosing HP over Dell my mistake ?)
As per Engineer, to fix hinges, he has to change Laptop Top Cover and Base enclosure,  which means almost dismantling the laptop and reassembling. (as per YouTube videos)
Something that is not acceptable to me.     I would rather demand a replacement for a fault product.

  • Late 2008-09 MacBook Pro Broken Hinge

This machine has been about as babied as a machine can be yet this week the hinge has started breaking in a corner until it's broken completey. It's so obvious that there is some glue failure. You can see it. It's like brittle ""Gorilla Glue". I took it in this monring to an Apple authorized dealer who quoted me about $600-700 for the repair, then I called Apple support and they basically said the same thing. I have aready had almost every internal drive, cable and board replaced, some TWICE due to defects (thankfully I was still under AC. My patience has grown thin.
On known design flaw issues like this, and it IS known, is there any recourse to get Apple to repair this? We have 6 Apple laptops in my family and we use them exclusively in our business, but this is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth (along with having to buy new powercords every freaking six months because the insulation breaks around the wiring).
Did I mention my patience is growing thin? My love for Apple is rapidly waning.

I have gone through the exact same problem and Apple wants me to pay MORE money for their defect...
my patience is not wearing thin... it is gone...
i bought it refurb, and as soon as i got it the track pad was messed up so i took it to an authorized seller/repair place in my town and nope... their repair was useless. i took it back again and Apple finally approved a total replacement.
so... fast forward to several months ago and the display begins creaking and making cracking sounds as i close it and getting very tight. then it finally separates from the back lid... and it got so bad i could see the insides of the display and the cheap-looking glue inside.
well, Apple wants a minimum of $310 but will probably ask for more (as i have seen estimates up in the $600 range)... but considering i spent almost $1,800 for it, and in less than 2 years it has a defect that should obviously be a recall/replacement.
all anyone has to do is go to google and type "macbook pro hinge" and they will get pages and pages... and pages of results of people all dealing with the same issue.
i've had apple's since the Apple //e, and normally Apple has the best customer service, but asking customers to pay for THEIR defective product is a huge slap in the face.
frustrated and not a happy apple customer...
my anxiety waiting for them to give me the final bill has been increasing over time... this should be comped 100%

Go to the iTunes Store, log into your account, and click the Purchases link under the Quick Links. From there you should be able to re-download some or all of your purchased content. Note that not all content has been licensed for re-downloading in all countries at this time. You can see what content you can download here:

    Welcome to the Forum!
I can help you with this. I have a T400 LCD front bezel and LCD top cover both in excellent shape, as well as Left and Right hinges available. Hinges are tight. Much safer to buy from a trusted Forum member who knows Thinkpads inside out than take a chance on Ebay where they may send you the wrong parts, broken parts, or never send your merchandise at all. (I'm speaking from experience, unfortunately).
I also have Brand New genuine Lenovo 9-cell and 6-cell T400 batteries, MINT (like-new) keyboards, AC adapters and Brand NEW entire WXGA+ T400 LCD assembly with webcam. Anyone in need of assistance may contact me by clicking my name on the left.
I have sent you a PM about the T400 screen casing. Check your 'New' messages at the top of this page
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • MacBook Pro 2012 hinge problem with single click sound when i open it

when i go to sleep and shut my macbook off and close the screen next morning i open my screen and i hear a single click noise??
im paranoid ita a brand new macbook its not a hard drive fail it just a single click sound when i open it to turn on
and heres a video of the hinge is this is whats causing the single click sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEUt2p783nA

I have this problem too with my Mid-2012 MBP non-retina. The screen would click once, after being left for a long time, and would be fine after that, until you close it and re-open it again after a long time. It is especially loud in the morning so I think it is temperature dependent. Happened about 3 months after buying. I took it to Apple. First time they replaced the entire screen. They had to since that is the only way to replace the hinge. When I got it back, the screen still clicks. Took it back to Apple again. Second time they just tightened the screws securing the display with the unibody. When I got it back the second time, the screen still clicks. Took it back to Apple again. The third time they replaced the entire screen AGAIN! When I got it back, the problem was fixed for 2 days, then the screen started clicking again so I'm back to square one. I'm wondering whether I should take it to Apple the forth time, but then again, they've already replaced the screen twice which didn't work so I'm not sure what more they can do. It's either this is normal, which implies the screen hinge is really badly designed or the clicking has nothing to do with the screen at all.

  • Broken Hinges and Plastic cover

The hinges and plastic  LCD cover had broken, how to replace it?

It would be worth asking at an Apple store!
When I had a battery replaced a year or so ago, my bottom cover was improperly replaced and appeared warped.
Without batting an eye, they offered to replace it - no charge.
I thought they were just being kind but it turns out it's a common problem on MacBooks from a certain time period (circa2010), so it is Mac's POLICY to replace them without charge when they warp!
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/
I have the same cracks appearing at the hinges (no bumps or drops, only a well-traveled and much used Mac!) but haven't asked about what obtaining a replacement shell would entail. If I do so before you, I'll reply again with what the terms / cost of replacement would be!

  • Hinge on Satellite M30 is loose

The right hinge on my M 30 is to loose. I have tryed to dismantle the keyboard without succes, what to do?

    Hi there,
the problem is that you cannot repair it only by tighten some screws. If the hinge on this model is loose then you will need new hinges and to exchange them, the whole machine must be disassembled since the hinges are partially under the palm rest and on the lcd installed.
So, if you want to fix that you should search for an technician which can fix it. Better solution would be to contact an authorized service partner:
