SSAS 2008 R2 reading all partitions

Hi<o:p></o:p>
The report is very slow and we see in sql profiler SSAS reading all year partitions even we filter with one month and report is very slow. The
cube partitions are monthly. The cube size is around 150GB. A measure column is Last Non empty. The
cube performance is very slow. We read prefetching article and we tried the options no luck. How can we restrict not reading all partitions? Any help/suggestions
Thanks
Sreeni

Hi Sreeni,
I hope I am wrong but I think sorting out this type of issue remotely is very difficult.
The book I can recommend is; -
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services
Unleashed
The only other generic advice I can give is to narrow down the problem domain. In this case this means; -
1) Creating a separate copy of your BIDS SSAS solution with a minimum number of dimensions and a single measure group with two partitions.
2) Think of any other way you can make your separate copy of your BIDS SSAS solution as simple as possible whilst still being able to demonstrate the issue of unexpected partition scans, e.g. remove calculated members from your single measure group.
The likely outcome of this is that you are likely to be closer to a resolution. The worst case scenario is that you would need to contract a third party on site consultant where your joint efforts would be much more focused.
In short by creating a stripped down version of your cube you  are much more likely to identify the specific area of your cube design which is causing the unexpected scans.
I hope this helps,
Kind Regards,
Kieran.

  • SSAS 2008, Process Old partition

    Hi Experts ,
I need an advice and suggestion.
I am working on SSAS 2008, I have One Fact Table "Fact_sales".
I have done yearly partion, I.e
    FAct_Sales_2010
    FAct_Sales_2011
    FAct_Sales_2012
    FAct_Sales_2013
Every Year I create One Partition.
Now in Year 2014 I added One More column i.e "Dept_key" in Fact Table and create FK PK relation with Dept_Dimension
This Year I created partion again i.e FAct_Sales_2014 which have Dept_key in Select Statement of Partition Query.
I do process Full , and my cube fails,Stating Dept_Key not found
I need to know ,if new columns are added in Fact Table ,
Is it require to Update or Recreate Old partition ??

If you have created the partitions by Query Binding you should add Dept_key in query for each partition. After all perform full processing measure group.
    Best regards.

  • BO on SSAS 2005 vs SSAS 2008

    Hello,
We have been testing a BO OLAP Universe on top of a SSAS cube.
We have BO XI 3.1 base version on windows.
    We observe this behavior.
Consider a  BO query against an OLAP Universe ( A few calculated measures thrown in ). We isolate the query using the tracer.
    1. If you run the MDX query against SSAS(2005) through Management studio it comes back in a few seconds.
    2. If you run the equivalent report in BO against SSAS(2005) - It runs for 1 hour and times-out.
3, If you run the same report in BO against SSAS( 2008) - the response comes back within a minute.
We do know that BO query generated is not the most efficient query. Howver the above observation makes us wonder - if query is not the only factor in the performance. Does 2005 treat requests differently, may be putting some on low priority or could this be some kind of issues due to load on 2005 server and Management studio some-how smartly integrated to get a faster response?

    Hi Didier,
Happy New Year and thanks for your responses.
"But if you are running the same MDX with SQL Server Management Studio and BO on SSAS 2005, it is hard to explain such differences." - Yes ..thats what concerns me..unless somehow this data is getting cached.. in which case BO should return the same.
But yes, i agree..the performance seems to have improved with 2008.
"What is the volume of data returned by the query?" - not much...may be less than 10000 rows
"Are you doing formatting and/or local variablles in the document (I assume it is Web Intelligence)?" - none.. no additions at all.. its a report out of cube universe objects only.
Here is a sample MDX. (Have nodified it WITH - to enable running it in Management studio)
    WITH SET NS2760D09E31A94B28B8996E8BF495DD34_2 AS Filter([Date].[Month].levels(1).allmembers,((([Date].[Month].currentmember.properties("CAPTION")="August 2009"))))

  • Hello, I have mistakenly deleted all partitions on my mac while trying to install windows on my macbook pro, how do i reinstall the mac os back

Hello, I have mistakenly deleted all partitions on my mac while trying to install windows on my macbook pro, how do i reinstall the mac os back. I just wanted to have them both, please help. thank you in advance

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • SUPERDRIVE reads ALL my DVD's EXCEPT ONE!!!:: My Windows 7 Home Premium. WHY IS THIS?????

iMac reads all my DVD's except one my WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM INSTALL DVD!
The windows dvd works fine on a pc so I know it's not the DVD.
Now I have seen people posting that their Superdrive doesn't work, or that it only reads cd's - I DONT HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS!
I reiterate my Superdrive reads ALL DVD's EXCEPT MY WINDOWS & HOME PREMIUM INSTALL DVD.
Is the Superdrive designed specifically to reject windows software? Absurd as it sounds this is the only logical conclusion.
This is what i have been trying to do over the last 4 days:
I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium DVD so I can partition my Hard drive and devote 100gb to Windows.
I have a late 2009 iMAC running the latest Mountain Lion OS.
I have cleaned the Superdrive by putting a credit card and microfibre cloth like people have suggested. If it was dirty or required cleaning then surely it wouldn't play any DVD and not just the Windows DVD? anyway that didn't work either.
Since the Superdrive reads the Windows 7 DVD once every 30 or so tries when it is eventually recognised I try to install it via bootcamp. Each attempt windows stops, the first time I got as far as the windows is loading screen and was stuck on that screen for 2 hours and was forced to power off, the second time I got as far as please load a driver or something and press any key with a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen, pressing keys did nothing.
I have tried to install windows via USB like some people have suggested.
I can not boot from my USB.
Some people have said Bootcamp will not allow you to but there is a work-around by going into .info and editing in my iMac version via textedit, which I have done.
    Still can't boot from USB.
The USB has been formatted to Mac journal and all windows files copied from DVD to the USB and there is an .iso on the USB also.
    Still can't boot from USB.
I have partitioned my Hard drive via Disk Utility but can't find a way to install windows on said partition since it never appears in Startup Disk.
Starting to believe there is a conspiracy here.
    Please help.

    Hi genejitsu,
Did you happen to find the cause of this? My Macbook Pro is having the exact same issue. Only my Windows 7 discs don't work and they aren't scratched and nice and clean. It's both the 32 and 64 DVDs that don't work.
    Cheers
    Shaun

  • Loading one partition in AWM tries to aggregate all partitions

I believe I'm seeing a difference in behavior between maintenance of a cube with a compressed composite vs. a cube with all dimensions sparse but not compressed.
With the compressed composite cube, I execute cube maintenance (AWM 10.2.0.2), select 'Aggregate the cube for only the incoming data values', and click Finish. According to XML_LOAD_LOG, the records are loaded, and the aggregation occurs in only the partition(s) in which the data was loaded.
With a fully-sparse cube (but NOT using a compressed composite), I follow all of the same steps, and use the same fact table. According to XML_LOAD_LOG, the records are loaded in the same amount of time as before, but the aggregation starts to loop over every partition (I'm partitioned along the Period-level of a Day-Wk-Pd-Qtr-Year time dimension). The log shows an entry for every period, not just the single period in the fact table, and it's taking about 90 seconds per period. For 48 periods, that adds over an hour of processing time unnecessarily.
I tried it twice, thinking perhaps I clicked the wrong radio button, but that's not the case. I'm seeing very different (and detrimental) behavior.
    Has anyone else seen this?

Addendum: The cube maintenance process also behaves badly when requesting the use of more than 1 processor. I have two cubes that I want to maintain at the same time. The server has 4 processors. I submit the job to the Oracle Job Queue and specify the use of 2 processors.
The load log shows 48 3-line entries like these:
Attached AW TEST1_SALESAW in MULTI Mode
Started load of measures: Sales, Cost, Units from Cube LY4.CUBE. PD07 04 Partition
Finished load of measures: Sales, Cost, Units from Cube LY4.CUBE. PD07 04 Partition. Processed 0 records.
There is only one fiscal period in the fact table. But the multi-threaded process dutifully rolls through all 48 fiscal periods, and in doing so adds a significant amount of time to the process.
NOTE: This is only an issue when using multiple processors. If I request only 1 processor, the "looping through all partitions" behavior does not occur.

  • SSAS 2008 - How to get processing times per dimension / measure group?

    Hi experts!
SSAS 2008. I am doing analysis and I'm trying to get information (from dmv or log) about processing times per dimension / measure group. Any ideas how to do that?
    Thanks,

also in DMV there's no column recording the processing time, so we suggest you using SSAS AMO to programmatically get the state and last processed date time. Please see:
    Analysis Management Objects (AMO)
    Hi John,
    Thanks for you info, As
Simon Suggested there is no DMV columns available.
You can use below link for more information.
    Programming Administrative Tasks with AMO

  • Excel 2007 ignores the roles configured on SSAS 2008

    Hi,
I am facing a common problem for which I have found very useful threads but they didn't manage to help me.
My problem is on excel report, Dimension data is not filtering correctly when I connect with user credentials for which a role is configured on the cube. Excel 2007 ignores the roles configured on SSAS 2008 and I tested with 2 different users with the same
    role configuration.
I ensured that the user doesn't fall in the server admin role and . I started up an SQL Profiler and I ensured no  * in the list of roles of the user.  I ensured also that there is no "built-in administrators group" configured (Security\BuiltinAdminsAreServerAdmin).
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/7052f751-8478-4ab2-aba8-d250a1606e07/deny-access-to-analysis-services-cube-from-excel-2007
Also I am planning to upgrade my Service Pack 1 to the cumulative pack Hot Fix 2710 ( KB969099 ) as it seems there are some known issues about dimension security on SSAS 2008. Do you really think it is a question of upgrade?
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/4b4e6e3c-bebe-4f81-8462-b2d0bd61ad11/dimension-attribute-security-on-ssas-2008-not-working-but-works-fine-on-2005
However I managed to work around the issue on SSAS and on Excel as follow but it is the not the solution expected:
    - On SSAS 2008 R2 cube browser, while testing using the role: Dimension values filtered correctly the required data
    - On Excel: Unless the role is specified in the configuration of the connection then the data is not filtered.
    http://kevin_s_goff.typepad.com/kevin_s_goff_weblog/2009/12/1242009---testing-ssas-roles-in-excel.html
    It is really urgent,
    Many thanks

    Hello,
I'm experiencing exactly the same issue and I can't find any solution to it.
Were you able to solve it? If so, how did you do it?
    Thanks!!!

Sound Blaster FAQ - READ ALL OF ME BEFORE POSTING - Updated 07/15/05 [ Edited ]Options01-24-2005 07:51 AM - last edited on 08-05-2010 07:14 PM by * KokChoy-CL
    Before Posting:
Is your sound card not working? Do you need advice on what to try to fix it? Then you are at the right place. Before posting your question, there are a few things you will want to check first.
Perhaps your question has already been asked and answered. Thousands of questions have been asked and are all stored here on the forums. Right above that orange navigation bar is the search bar, try searching for what you are experiencing. If there is a thread but it doesn't answer your question, check the date, if it is several weeks since the last reply it would be better to name a new thread then resurrect the dead thread.
Also before posting collect as much information about your card as possible. Get the model number off of the card/device itself and also the inkstamp number (found on an inkstamp or silkscreen on the non-chip side of the card) if you have a sound card. Please note that if you have a card that was preinstalled in your computer by the manufacturer or you bought the card in a brown box or static bag that it is most likely an OEM card. In cases like these it may be best to contact the retailer or the manufacturer (don't forget to check their forums if they have them) for support as the cards can be very different from the retail versions.
    Lost CD, Need Drivers:
Standalone drivers are available for many of our sound cards and devices on our website. The best way to check is to go to Support/Downloads and select your product from the list and click next. Then you select your Operating System from the drop box (keep the other options on their defaults) and click go. The very first section should be the driver listings. Just because a driver says that it is an update, doesn't mean that it isn't a standalone driver. The best way to check is to click on the details button and read the requirements section. If it doesn't say that it requires previous drivers then it is most likely stand alone and is worth installing. These standalone drivers usually include a configuration utility called "CTpanel.exe" that a quick search of your drive after install will locate. You can use this to set the card up.
If your card does not list standalone drivers then you will want to contact support to obtain an install CD.
If your card is OEM, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your system or the retailer you purchased it from for the install CD. There can be major differences between retail and OEM models and the retailer or manufacturer are provided with drivers specific to the card they are distributing.
    Standard Troubleshooting:
If you are going to ask a question, there are a few standard troubleshooting steps that are suggested for almost any problem. You should really check them out before posting a question as it can save you a lot of time waiting on replies.
First off, try a cleansweep and reinstall of your card. Often all that the card needs is a fresh start. The steps for this are found in these Knowledgebase articles:
Uninstalling Sound Blaster Drivers and Applications(Windows Vista)
    Uninstalling Creative Disc Detector
    Uninstalling Sound Blaster PCI Cards
Uninstalling PCMCIA Sound Blaster Devices in Windows XP
Uninstalling ExpressCard Sound Blaster Devices in Windows XP
If that doesn't work, not all is lost. There are many standard troubleshooting steps that are used for almost all problems. Fortunately we have a separate Kbase article that covers these steps. It even has suggestions for specific problems. Here is that link:
    http://support.creative.com/kb/showa....aspx?sid=2538
Popping Clicking, Hissing, and Other Sound anomalies:
Perhaps your question is about a popping, clicking, or hissing sound that your card seems to be generating. If so, then this article is for you. The sound optimization article:
    http://support.creative.com/kb/showa...aspx?sid=46913
    If Nothing Above Works:
One last thing to try would be to clean boot your version of Windows. Perhaps an application is getting in the way of the card working correctly. Try it and see if the card works when clean booting into Windows. If so then something that is starting up is interfering with the card.

Boston Acoustic Digital Speakers or Prebuilt System With a Digital Live! Card
Some name brand systems shipped with a special Live! Value card that was made to work with digital speakers. If you system shipped with a Live! Value and you have digital speakers you will need to use drivers provided by your system manufacturer. If you use the drivers on the Creative website your card will no longer work with your digital speakers.
If you have a set of Boston Acoustic digital speakers that came with your system and they are not working with your sound card, make sure you have it connected to the digital out on the card. Also make sure that the digital out is enabled.
    If None of this helps:
If none of this helps, then it is probably time to go ahead and post your question. Make sure to let everyone know what you have already tried from this article, otherwise you may get responses suggesting you try them again.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies - 'God [darn] it, you've got to be kind."

There's a small discussion on the Asus forums about this issue here:
    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20052602425373&board_id=&model=A8V&pa ge=&SLanguage=en-us
I'm extremely certain this has nothing to do with Creative. I recently tried a Turtle Beach Riviera 5. sound card in my Asus A8V board with the same poor result. Onboard sound works fine as long as you remove the PCI card. Oddly, the four sound cards I've tried (three by Creative) work fine on the same MB using Windows 98. Only Windows XP has this issue, but since it works fine if you restart/wake up from standby/or hit F0 after entering the BIOS, it's obviously directly related to the BIOS.
Since this problem has gone on for so long with no acknowledgment from Asus, I'm not very hopeful this will ever get fixed. I've considered trying an M-Audio Revolution 5. and see if that works, but I know it's a long shot. I'm also not sure if I want to risk close to $00 on a sound card that I figure has a 0% chance of working.
(If ANYONE out there in the world has a sound card that works with games on an Asus A8V - please, please, pretty please post in this forum so we can all go out and get it!)
It absolutely amazes me that a problem this significant slipped by Asus during their supposed "4,000 dedicated man hours" of testing!

  • Recovery Manager deleted all partitions, how to recover data?

    Hi,
    I have Pavilion g6 2203et, with Windows8.
    I had a 600+GB C: (system) drive and a 15GB D: (recovery) drive.
    I created a new 300GB partition (P: ) by shrinking C: to 300GB.
    So, i had 3 partitions, C:300gb, D:15GB, P:300GB.
I have done some wrong configuration with my custom software and i wanted to reset Windows8 installation by using Recovery Manager.
It prompted me to backup my data, but i thought "my all private data is in P drive, so its safe" and did not backed any data up.
I clicked the button to start recovery process, and i realized that it will wipe all partitions (I read the todo list).
I was on the first step (formatting drive step), i couldn't find any "cancel" button, so i have force computer to shutdown by pressing power button 4 seconds.
After that, it was unable to boot.
I had a tool to check partitions and it showed all 600gb space is unallocated.
15gb recovery drive is there though.
What can i do for saving my private data (that was on drive p)?
    Thanks in advance...

Recovering the data on the P: partition is going to be a slim to none chance at this point. Sorry.
Conventional methods wont' work in this case. It will need a professional data recovery service performed, but it is not guaranteed to be of any success.
If the data is important, the cost of taking it to a professional data recovery service may be worth it.
If you do decide to pursue with a data recovery service, I recommend not using that hard drive for anything else. The more it is written to, the smaller the chance of data retrieval.
There are programs out there designed to do this, but I am not certain of how much they cost and I don't have experience with them to guide you through the use of them.
Just to note, a recovery cannot be stopped once it is officially started. Any recovery, not just by HP, will repartition the hard drive back to the original factory image. This means the C: partition will always be returned to the original size and any partitions made by resizing C: will be lost.
Once the data is retrieved, if that option is pursued, you will need to let the recovery finish to get the original OS and software back.

  • Software to Clone all Partitions on Disk (Mac and Bootcamp)?

After looking around I can find utilities to backup Mac partitions and others to backup NTFS, but I can't find one tool to do both. Any suggestions (either Mac or Windows)?  I simply want to make a drive clone including all partitions before swapping out my drive for a bigger one.

    Just curious,
wouldn't built-in OS X Disk Utility "imaging" feature do the same? I've done this before on some install DVDs and my own Mac HDD and never had any trouble. Not sure, how it would handle Boot Camp, but give it a shot.
Boot off of your Snow Leopard Install DVD
    Start the Disk Utility
    Create New Image
    Set format to DVD/CD Master
    Set encryption to none
Let me know, I'm curious myself. I don't run Boot Camp
If you have a PC available, you could consider Norton Ghost.
All you need is to start your Mac in Target Disk Mode - holding "T" while starting your Mac up will turn it into a simple FireWire external disk and never boot up the OS.
This won't work unfortunately, but Carbon Copy is free (donationware) and it works.

  • How to mount all partitions?

What command (with paramenters) would you use to mount all partitions specified in the /etc/fstab?

I wonder what happens when one types
    man fstab
on the command line? (or in the Google 'search box')
Oh my ... online help. With answers to basic questions. And a 'See also' section that leads people to additional information such as commands and file formats and other information.
Interestingly there is even a response to 'man man' to help understand how to use the pages of the online manual.
Frank - you will tend to get sarcastic responses unless you demonstrate that you have attempted to find the answer yourself. A good place to look for answers at your level is at the http://www.linuxlinks.com/Beginners/ portal.
You will also find books like http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/lpicertnut2/ helpful. I know you can get it at Amazon and http://toronto.ibegin.com/retail/worlds-biggest-bookstore
The question sounds like it came right out of a self study book ... which exam are you studying for?

  • Converting a SSAS 2008 R2 database into a SSAS 2012 Tabular database

    Hi,
I'd like to know if it is possible to convert or migrate in whatever manner a SSAS 2008 R2 database (multidimensional) into a SSAS 2012 Tabular database.
    Many thanks

Unfortunately there is no way to convert or migrate a multidimensional cube to a tabular model.
    This MSDN article says ...
Because tabular is the newer solution, you might think that migrating an existing multidimensional solution to a tabular format is
the correct course of action, but this is usually not the case. Tabular does not supersede multidimensional, and the two formats are not interchangeable.
If you need to migrate a cube to tabular (maybe for performance reasons), unfortunately you need to build it from scratch.  I believe the reason for this is that there are concepts that do not translate across the technologies.  There are no good
3rd party tools that I'm aware of that even attempt to do this.

  • All partitions are re-aggregated

    Hi,
I have a cube that is partitioned on time and I load/aggregate data for the previous day using a view on the fact table and LOAD PRUNE, SOLVE PARALLEL. This works just fine most of the fine and takes about 2 hours to complete.
Sometimes - though - all partitions are re-aggregated and it takes about 2 hours per partition (right now I have 80 partitions so it takes quite some time even if I can run some processes in parallel). I have checked the cube build log if there were any changes to the dimensions but I can't find any.
Is it possible to find out why this re-aggregation occurs from some other log?
    Regards /Magnus

I am not sure if there is a way to find the changes through olap dml.
One quick way could be through SQL.
Lets say your dimension name is DEPT and its hierarchy is DHIER.
Use the default cube_table views to create pre and post load tables.
    (1). CREATE TABLE PRELOAD_DEPT_DHIER as select * from DEPT_DHIER_VIEW;
(2). Refresh you DEPT dimension through cube build command.
    (3). CREATE TABLE POSTLOAD_DEPT_DHIER as select * from DEPT_DHIER_VIEW;
(4). Through sql query find the differences between PRELOAD_DEPT_DHIER table and POSTLOAD_DEPT_DHIER table.
Of course you can do similar type of logic through olap dml also by storing the DEPT hierarchy information in some olap variables before and after dimension refresh. Then write and olap dml program to find the differences.
    Its preferable to use SQL.
Only use OLAP dml as a last resort.
