SSD as Scratch Disc, SLC or MLC SSD?

i am using a external 512 GB SSD (crucial m4 MLC-SSD) as photoshop cs6 and cc scratch disc and it runs well, i guess.
i get round 390/300 MB/sec read/write speeds over usb 3.0 in my imac 27" late 2013.
as i want to buy a second 500 GB SSD, would photoshop team or people who know detailed technical aspects about
MLC and SLC SSDs  go for a SLC or MLC SSD?
i heard that SLC SSD´s (enterprise grade) are more suitable for very frequent read/writes regarding the wear level.
purpose: daily work with photoshop cs6 and cc, 8h per day, huge files: 16bit 300dpi 10.000 x 10.000 pixels with 30-50 layers.
i have 32GB RAM but i heard that photoshop cs6 and cc still use the scratch disc permanently even if there is enough ram.
i am constantly watching the read writes on my ssd discs with istatmenus

i think if i use a thunderbolt ssd scratch disc for photoshop, it has a superior sustained read and write throughput, is that right?
would you use the thunderbolt ssd in my case, or can i go with the usb3 ssd?
in the moment i have a 256GB thunderbolt ssd and a 500GB usb3 SSD (externals) to choose from.
i think my workflow would benefit from choosing the thunderbolt as scratch disc, but how can i find out
if the difference from using the usb3 ssd is just 5 or 10%?

    and 32GB RAM. my info panel says, that 32GB RAM is not enough and the scratch disc is active, (50GB is needed, 32GB is available)
    calculating scratch disc size: 20 x 100 = 200GB as needed to scratch, the 500GB SSD is a lot more than i need, actually?
    in mid 2014 i want to buy the new mac pro with 64GB RAM, also would need a dedicated scratch disc,
    as i heard that photoshop is constantly using the scratch disc, also, if it doesnt need it.
    it writes the whole image onto the disc, when opened.
    my concern is:
    USB 3.0 is not built as a pure data connection (as thunderbolt is), it has a weak read/write sustained throughput, as i heard.
    as conclusion: must i use an external thunderbolt SSD as photoshop scratch disc to prevent lag and performance drops compared to usb 3.0 or is the difference marginally?

    For optimal performance in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS5 (I will soon upgrade to CS6 or CC), how should I distribute my OS, apps, Scratch, Caches, DNGs, and working TIFFs among these drives?:
    120 GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD
    240 GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD
    960 GB OWC Mercury Accelsior SSD
    (connected by Thunderbolt TB1 OWC Helios unit)
    Also, probably irrelevant: multiple individual hard drives connected via eSATA and USB3, not RAIDed together
    The Accelsior SSD, connected by TB1, is by far the fastest drive. Would partitioning and devoting different parts of it to different functions help?
    I'm able to fit the OS, apps, email, etc. on the 120 GB SSD. But I don't assume that I should.

    So, disappointing that it's not an SLC SSD, but still better than HDD.
    I've read mixed reviews of Toshiba SSDs in general. I poked around a bit just now after reading your reply, and found a site ( http://www.hardmac.com/news/2010/04/26/apple-512-gb-ssd-is-a-toshiba-h2 ) that claims it's specifically a Toshiba HG2. Another site ( http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1230/1/ ) claims that's the Toshiba HG2 is a fairly solid performer, although they tested a 256 GB version.
    Tests are also starting to appear for this new MPB 512GB SSD, and they imply the drive does not perform as well as other SSDs out there, although that might be due in part to the size. Still much better than HDD, though. See:

  • SSD solid state discs

    My computer is configured with the system disc as disc D (factory image) and the data disc as disc C (but both on the same spindle).
    There are several solid state drives available that have faster read/ write speeds than the current rotational discs and it would seem that a performance advantageous (their claims) could be gained to substitute a SSD for the disc D on a system rebuild.
    They use SATA III interface spec and I’m not sure what my interface spec is, probably older and slower. If my interface spec is an older version would it by technically feasible to use a later version.
    If its very old (IDE?) are there converters?
    Would it work physically and does anybody have any experience of doing this?
    Could there be performance improvements?
    My machine is a Compaq Presario CQ5047UK Desktop PC bought June 09.

    I can answer some of your questions. I have not personally installed a SSD in a desktop PC.
    The specs for your PC indicate a SATA II drive speed.

    A SATA III SSD should work just fine in your PC, but will run at the slower SATA II transfer speed.
    I installed an Intel 330 SATA III 120 GB SSD in my HP Elitebook 6930p, which has a SATA II controller.
    The drive works fine and the disk performance seems to have improved. While I have not benchmarked it, I did compare the old windows experience index (WEI) rating from the old SATA II mechanical drive to the new SSD.
    The old mechanical drive was a 5.9 and the new one a 7.7.
    What you need to make sure of is if you decide to buy a SSD you will need to get one that has a 3.5" drive bay adapter as SSD's (as far as I know) are then all 2.5" notebook size.
    My intel 330 came with such an adapter which made it very versatile.
    You will also either have to get a program to clone your current HDD configuration onto the new HDD, or reinstall the operating system from scratch.
    I don't know anything about that, because I just reinstalled the operating system from scratch.
    You most likely will not be able to use recovery disks as the drive needs to be the same size as the original one in order for the recovery disks to work.
    So, if the cloning option is not amenable to you, you can do this...
    If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
    Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
    Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
    The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
    The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
    When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
    I selected No, make the ISO file.
    It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
    I tested both of them on my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
    When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.

  • UEFI, HP Recovery Discs, Windows 8 and SSD drives....?

    Good afternoon folks, this is really giving me a headache!
    I just got a new laptop (hp dv7 7338ea), a Windows 8 machine. I ran the HP recovery disc creation burner, and it burnt a bunch of DVDs (which you can only do once), and it verified them. I’ve used similar discs before on my old HP laptop when the HDD failed, and what I want to do here is apply these new Win8 restore discs to my new SSD (Samsung 840, http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/solidstate/128gbandabove/mz-7td250...).
    So I swapped the drives over, and booted up the first disc. It went fine, it seemed to be happily able to format and start copying files, and then it asked for restore disc 2.
    However, when I put that disc in, it just kicks it out again and continues to ask for disc 2. I put the disc in another machine and it loads fine, I tried copying the image to another disc but it didn’t like that either. Google suggests that people have been having this disc 2 issue for a few years across numerous devices, with no solution.....
    SO! I thought right, it won’t let me use the discs, maybe I’ll just image my original hard drive and apply that image to the SSD. It took me a while to get the laptop to boot from the CD at all, and when I got Clonezilla running it couldn’t even see the HDD I had connected (via USB). It could tell there was something connected to the USB but...yeah.
    I managed to use a different machine to copy the HP "Recovery" partition to another drive, but couldn't boot into it.
    It’s one of those new UEFI computers, and it’s the first one I’ve come across, and I’ve seen stuff online suggesting that the system does all sorts of weird stuff to make life harder, but this is where I’m at a loss and you, being well up on the current state of the tech world, might know some solutions I wouldn’t think of!
    Oh also, the BIOS has some weird legacy setting that’s disabled that suggests it’s for pre Win8 OS’, and when I try to turn it on it asks me to enter a confirmation string of numbers, and that concerns me, because that usually means whatever I’m doing is pretty serious, and seeing as I don’t know what it is, I’m not going to touch it!
    It also has something called Secure Boot, which from Googling I think I have a basic understanding of, the problem is I don’t want to disable Secure Boot, as I’m concerned it will wipe the “keys” it uses and then I won’t be able to get them back for my HP Win8 system.....
    I’m actually strongly considering buying Windows 7, disabling this UEFI thing as much as possible and giving up all my HP software. But I don’t want to, I bought Windows 8 (well, it came with this machine), and I'd really like to use it!
    Do you guys and girls have any ideas? Thank you very much for your help! I love HP's computers, and I love this laptop, and I can't wait to get it running with this SSD

  • What size for OS/apps SSD and scratch disk SSD ?

    I need a SSD for my OS with the full CS6 Cloud and few others apps (but no games, pictures, songs or other personnal stuff),
    that's mean between 70 and 80Gb. So I think I'll need only a 128Gb for that.
    I also need a scratch disk, so despite I prefer a fast and large disk like the Barracuda 3Tb, I read it will be better to take a SSD.
    My workstation is a 6x core, with 64Gb RAM, and 6x HDD for projects, render and footage (4K R3D and 1080p PRORES).
    My questions are :
    1) OS/apps SSD :
    Even if I only need 80Gb (or a few more like 90Gb max) of storage, do I need to take more than 128Gb ?
    Is it possible that the OS fill my disk with lots of temporary files ?
    And the same for Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects or others apps ?
    I know those apps will use the scratch disk, but maybe others temporary files will be write on this OS/apps drive ?
    2) scratch disk SSD :
    Like I said, I prefer larger drives, but as I understood, SSD will be better for preview and temp files,
    and actually I'm working with 4K R3D footages and 1080p PRORES.
    So do you think 128Gb will be enough for a scratch disk, to use with CS6, Blackmagic Resolve, and others 3D apps, like Maya ?
    Of course I can empty them regularly.............. but is it enough ? Or 256Gb, or higher will be better ?
    Or just a fast WD Velociraptor 1Tb or even a cheaper Barracuda 3Tb hard drive will be good enough ?

    Maybe you mean that those apps will fill the SSD with "hidden" files, but not reach the limit of 128Gb ?
    About Windows, I didn't knew I could make a scratch disk only for this temp files.
    Do I have to put the Windows temp files in the scratch disk also ?
    And you don't think a Velociraptor with 1Tb will be a good solution between the speed of a SSD and the size of a HDD ?
    My drives (alone or in RAID 0) are directly connected from the motherboard P9X79 PRO, trought the X79 chipset, and the Marvell chipset.
    But I read that the Marvell chipset has only 500Mb/s in total bandwitch divided between the 2 drives..... I'm not really sure....
    but even if it's true, I don't think the OS/apps will take a lot of bandwitch (except when I'll start an apps),
    and it will surelly let the full bandwitch for the scratch disk. Don't you think ?

    It's almost 2012...has anything changed with the do's and dont's of using a SSD drive as your scratch?
    Last I checked, the best configuration was a SSD for your OS/system and a RAID of some identical HDDs for your video/audio/photos, etc.  And it wasn't good to use the SSD as scratch because the read/write suffered over time and the drive depreciated and you needed to reformat it to bring it back to life.

    As far as, I know there shouldn't be any problems with this.  The drives have improved quite a bit.  Apple has been shipping them as main system drives in the MacBook Airs for quite some time.  Your system disk does a lot of read writing for virtual memory, and so far, I haven't heard of any issues.

    once i was reading an adobe pdf "How to get better performance in photoshop cs5" - that was in 2009 or 2010, and may be outdated, but there was a calculation method
    to determine the size of a scratch disc. (similar calculation see below, if i can remember right)
    i am asking myself, how can i determine the correct size of an external SSD-scratch disc, only used by photoshop (completely empty):
    should i buy a 128GB or 256GB or 512GB SSD which is only reserved for photoshop?
    basic question 1 : i guess i should avoid to set the internal SSD as photoshop scratch disc, as it slows down everything?
    basic question 2 : in sense of maximum performance: better buy an external USB3.0 or thunderbolt SSD? will photoshop really use the extra thunderbolt speed when swapping data?
    secondary question:
    can i calculate the size regarding my daily working habits?
    i am mainly working like this:
    - with my imac 27" late 2013 with 32GB RAM and 256 GB internal pci-e SSD (800 MB/sec), which will stay always half empty for performance reasons.
    - OSX 10.8 mountain lion and 10.9 mavericks soon
    - photoshop cs5, cs6 and cc (always without extended)
    - 8bit and 16bit mode
    - only RGB
    - with latest phocus/Hasselblad and canon RAW Files which produce a basic .psb document at ...
    - 10.000 x 7000 px at 300dpi
    - with average 10 - 40 main image layers and 20-50 adjustement layers (try to reduce that in 16bit)
    - .psb file is 2-20 GB big (file in finder)
    - 16bit file compression is off, when saving .psb files (faster handling)
    -  set photoshop to 70% ram usage (from 32GB RAM)
    i wonder how to calculate ?
    for example:
    10.000 x 7000 px at 300dpi needs for one image layer at 16bit: 2GB RAM in photoshop cs6 or cc (just as a number), this may be wrong
    so lets take 2GB RAM and multiply with 10 image layers in my .psb file (16bit) = 20 GB RAM, and multiply with 20 adjustment layers (guess they need less ram, for one lets say 500MB) = 20GB + 10GB = this 16bit .psb layer file would need 30GB RAM, so when i have 32GB in my imac, i set cs6 or cc to 70% ram usage, it misses at least round 8-10GB RAM > can i guess that photoshop would swap these 8GB onto my scratch disc? or do i miss something important in my thinking?

  • Suggestion For An External Scratch Disc needed

    I have recently learned that I had my scratch disc set up incorrectly to the same internal SSD in the Mac Book Pro. I assume that to keep the maximum transfer speed I need and external HDD or SSD with FireWire 800 instead of USB. I have found a few of those but they are much larger than what I need in GB and physical size.
    I need something portable and reliable since I do most of the work on the road.

    Have you considered a G-Drive mobile or G-Drive mini SSD? Both are bus-powered.
    If you're ok using AC power, look at the G-Drive mini.
    These are very nice units - small, reliable, good reputation.
    FireWire (or eSATA if you have a MBP with an ExpressCard slot) is the way to go. USB generally cannot keep up with the sustained throughput required for video.

  • Installation/scratch disc location query

    back since PS7, i've followed a bit of advice i found on a site in that PS was installed on a separate partition to the opsys, and the scratch discs were elsewhere too.
    I'm putting in a new 120gig SSD and a 500gig normal drive tomorrow, obviously Win7 (64bit) will be on the SSD, is it worth partitioning that up and putting PS CS5 separate or does it not matter nowadays?

    There's no good reason to partition your SSD; it likely wouldn't help or hurt performance either way, but your free space will be divided up, and 120 GB is none too much to start with.
    You definitely DO want the Photoshop scratch drive to be physically different than the drive on which your opsys swap file is resident, though.
    Assuming your SSD will be C: and your 500 GB drive will be D:...
    Some of Adobe's software ALWAYS installs on drive C:, but I've heard that if you work at it you can get Photoshop installed on D: (I don't remember the specifics of the installer, though).  It might be helpful to install Photoshop on the separate hard drive, simply because Windows may ultimately want to grow and grow until that 120 GB is mostly used up.  A Photoshop CS5 installation chews up 1 GB or more of disk space.

    I have reduced applications photos email etc from my laptop but I am being told 1. Start up discs are full and 2. Scratch discs are full what exactly does this mean. Would more memory help if so what type. The macbook is 2008 2.4 core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR SDRAM. Thanks I know this is a daft question for most people.

  • How to install PS CC to a SSD other than the boot or "C" SSD.

    I want to install PS CC, Bridge CC, and Lr CC to a SSD other than the boot or "C" SSD.
    How to do that?
    Problem is, CC Set-Up automatically installs these apps to my boot or "C" SSD.

    I signed-out of PS; and deleted PS, Bridge, Lr, and Creative Cloud. The, when I download (i.e., saved) Creative Cloud Setup to my "A" drive SSD, then double click to install Creative Cloud, "it" automatically installs the Creative Cloud app to my "C" SSD.
    The app does not ask where I want to install Creative Cloud.
    I keep looking for an opportunity to "change the default install location" but I do not see such an opportunity.
    Previously, when I installed PS there was no opportunity to "change the default install location."
    Can you tell me how to find or force an opportunity to "change the default install location?"
    Where or how do I find "the CC app settings?"
    Does Abode have a manual install version for Creative Cloud, PS, Bridge, and Lr?
    FYI, my OS is Win 7 pro 64 bit.
    Also, why does Adobe automatically install a 32bit version of PS on my system?
    Can I prevent that?

  • How in the world can I select my external hard drive as a scratch disc for video?  Please skip the obvious, like 'is it plugged in?'

    At wit's end trying to select my external hard drive to load video on.  Time Machine backed stuff up on it so the computer knows it's there but it won't show anywhere else, iMovie or FCE4.   

    Hi Eric and thanx for the fast response.  I've had very little time to piddle around with this iMac and fce4 since I got it a few years back but I DO remember seeing an option back then--when capturing video from the camera--to choose some other scratch disc.  Some time after buying and plugging in the ext. drive I clicked on Time Machine (not even knowing what it was--some window popped up and it looked good).  I wonder if turning on Time Mach has locked me out of the ext. drive.  It doesn't show up ANYWHERE ANYTIME now, not under system pref., user pref. in fce4 or iMovie or anything else EXCEPT when I click on Time Machine it does tell me I've 2.97 terrabytes of space (which has to be the ext. drive; the iMac has 500 gb).  I'm thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling fce4 and starting over.

    Hello. I've read through the existing questions regarding scratch disc and Photoshop, yet can't seem to find an answer to my questions. I would greatly appreciate any tips/advice. Here is my setup and situation:
    I am running an iMac with a 2.16 intel core 2 duo processor, 3 GB memory, and running OS X version 10.6.4. I am currently using versions cs3 and cs4 of Photoshop, but plan to upgrade to cs5 soon.
    The problem I am having is when running Photoshop, my computer becomes very slow. After reading about possible reasons, I came across a couple of sources (including Adobe themeselves) mentioning that the scratch disc should be a designated drive seperate from the drive containing the operating system. Since I am using an iMac that only allows for one internal drive, my only apparent option seems to be an external drive.
    Many people say don't use an external drive, but if you are going to; use an eSATA or firewire. The imac does have firewire 800 capabilities. Should I consider this?
    Now I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to purchase a macbook for my next computer (what I wanted to do) because it will also only have one drive, not allowing for a seperate drive for the scratch disc. Any thoughts? I've read around the net but haven't found any definitive answers.

    Photoshop benefits greatly from having a scratch disk on a separate physical drive, not on the boot disk or on another partition of the boot disk. It's almost not worth connecting via Firewire 400 because the transfer limitations don't allow much performance improvement. But using a Firewire 800 connection gives excellent performance.
    Running Photoshop on a one-drive machine is a little frustrating due to the performance hit without the separate scratch drive.
