SSI & Spry

Hi all,
I have a table with a list of items in it, which is fully
generated by Spry from an XML dataset. Part of the table includes
an icon to the PDF version of a document. This document changes
name for each row (named after the {id}), but not all rows have a
PDF available at any given time.
When the table is shown, I want to have a PDF icon to those
files that have a matching PDF file available, and a greyed out
icon for those that don't.
My original plan was to call a small cgi script via SSI which
passes the {id} from the dataset to the script, which then checked
if a matching PDF exists, and returns the correct icon depending on
the results. In theory this works great, but when I call the cgi
using pdfcheck.cgi?id={id} and then print the $id variable that the
cgi received to STDERR, its actually being passed {id} and not the
value of {id} (eg. CAD00002) as I was expecting.
I am basically doing in a table:
<tbody spry:repeatchildren="ds">
<tr>
<td><!--include
virtual="/cgi-bin/pdfcheck.cgi?id={id}"--></td>
<td>......</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
and pdfcheck.cgi will return <img src="pdf.png"> or
<img src="pdfoff.png"> depending on the result of the file
check ... or would if it wasnt always checking for "{id}.pdf" which
obviously doesn't exist :)
Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance!

Thinking about it, this is never gonna work as the SSI is
executed to early anyway I believe.
I ended up using SSI to call a cgi script to generate a new
xml file based on the contents of the PDF directory, which I then
load into the page and during the onPostLoad observer function I
set the image depending on if there is a match between the two
datasets. Seems to work quite well and isn't too slow, although
time will tell as more items are added to the tables :)
Any other suggestions are welcome though, all knowledge is
good knowledge!

  • Help with SSI

    I still pretty new at this, but I created a site with 2 different SSI spry-menu navigational bars. (One being the top main navigational menu and the other a side-bar for a section.) They look and act fine when you click from a main page. However on the next page, the top bar looses it's design layout and both bars add the last folder accessed into the all links.
    Correct ex.: .../BFT/articles/bft_charlies.shtml
    Wrong ex.: .../BFT/articles/articles/bft_charlies.shtml
    I have gone back and checked all the links, there correct. What should I do?

    Here is the main link for one section:

    This is how both bars are suppose to look and act. When you click to the next page, the top bar looses it's design and both bars add the last folder accessed into the all links.

  • Spry submenus not working while Included with SSI

    I have customized and created my horizontal spry menu bar with the help of some tutorials on here, and I have pasted it onto a page without any html, head, or body tags. I have linked to the CSS files and javascript files in both the page being included and the page containing the include. But the Spry submenus wont work on the page with the include on it. But they work on the page being included.
    I tried only referencing the javascript file with the page containing the include, and vice versa to no avail. Again, everything else works except the expansion of the submenus.
    I am new to all of this, I only know what I have learned from doing tutorials and reading forums on this fabulous website. Has anyone encountered this problem or have a remedy? Thanks in advance.

    I'm confused. The submenus in the spry menu on the included page work when I don't reference the external style sheets or the javascript in the page containing the include. Based on the explanation given by David Powers on this thread about how to use SSI with Spry, I thought all pages had to include the link to the javscript and style sheets:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Dreamweaver/10.0_Using/WSEE4C0148-A6F4-4bf5-9DEF-CE06AB026214a .html
    Problem solved? Or if anyone has an actual explanation for this, I will leave this question unanswered.
    Sorry to be so quick to post...

  • Spry Menu using SSI?

    I am new to CS5 and getting a bit discouraged.  I have created a container and then Inserted DIV tag for header, footer, top menu bar, left side menu bar.  However when I add the SSI using the insert ssi and then attaching the page this happens - my container disappears.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Spry SSI IE8 Artifact Problem

    we have setup our intranet site with several spry menus. So that we do not have to copy content we have master menu files and are using server side includes like the following: <!--#include virtual="/hr/left_menu.asp"-->
    The menus work but we are having problems with how the menu displays. All looks well until we scroll down on the page. The menu displaces and looks like it follows the page content. When we put the menu code directly into the page this does not happen. When you mouse over the 'displaced' menu the position resets to its correct position... sometimes, others it just disappears all together. Help would be appreciated as we are looking at putting this new site into production soon.
    Pic below.... First glance all is as it is supposed to be...
    Then...

    This is probably a stupid question, but have you adjusted the links to supporting files within your menu include?
    To put it another way, if you include a file from another dirctory/folder, then all of the links to supporting files (JS and CSS) should be the same as if these files were called from the parent page.
    Better still, place all refered to CSS and JS files within the parent document and strip the included document from all code with the exception of the menu markup and the menu constructor.
    For more info read here http://foundationphp.com/tutorials/sprymenu/ssi.php
    I hope this helps.

  • SSI with SPRY

    We have just added a SPRY menu bar to our header that is
    brought in with SSI. When we go to design view DW only display the
    header (the stuff that comes in with the SSI). Cut out the include
    statement and the whole page is displayed.
    Menas that to do any editing we have to remove the SSI , edit
    the page, replace the SSI.
    Any ideas why and how to fix??

    Sounds like your SSI file contains head content? That file
    should
    ONLY contain the snip of body code you want to display and
    nothing else.
    No html tag, no head tag, no body tag, etc.

  • Spry accordion widget - SSI (server side include) as content in the panel

    After having inserted the following command <!--# include file = "content2.asp" -> in the accordion Panel Content I get an error in Dreamweaver - every time I open the file. See the error in the attached picture.
    Once all files are uploaded to the server it works apparently without problems or script errors.
    Is there anyone who can help me to use SSI "server side include" as content in accordion panels?

    Thanks for your reply.
    The fault lay in the SSI file. This file contained these tag:
    </ html>
    And of course the tag </ html> generate an error if the tag is inserted in the content of the accordion panel via ssi file.

  • Help with spry not displaying using ssi

    Hi,
    I have reviewed previous tutorials and can't find where my mistake is.  I cut and pasted the code for spry onto an include file with the extention .shtml .  I pointed to the file and the header seeems to correct,
    My files are root relative
    I have a file called includes, you can view the source here
    http://crystalbeach.com/funthings/includes.shtml
    Here is my link that is supposed to be displaying the spry navigation bar.
    http://crystalbeach.com/funthings/index_erinn.shtml
    Please help!
    thanks

    http://crystalbeach.com/funthings/index_erinn.shtml
    Line 29
    <!--include file="includes.shtml"--> is simply a plain HTML comment. It doesn't do anything.
    Change to
    <!--#include virtual="/funthings/includes.shtml" -->
    This assumes that your include file is named includes.shtml and is always stored inside a folder named "funthings". Many people store includes inside a folder named "includes" in the root folder on the server.
    NOTE: the .shtml file extension only applies to the parent page calling the include file.
    The include file can have any file extension e.g. menu.monkeybutt where the include code would change to <!--#include virtual="/includes/menu.monkeybutt" -->

  • Spry menu  SSI

    I can not get the menu to show when SSI is in a table.   It shows in Dreanweaver only.
    <!--#include file="menu2.html" -->

    Help, before I jump in the river!  (27 degrees)

    The easiest way to check if your server supports SSI is to copy what is below and paste it into a document.
    <HTML>
    <TITLE>Test File</TITLE>
    <!--#config timefmt="%A" --> <!--#echo var="DATE_LOCAL" -->
    </HTML>
    Save it as an HTML file and upload it to your server. Then use your browser to look at it. You should see the current day name (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... you get the idea). If you see the day name, you're good to go.
    If not, try saving the file with the extension .shtml. See the "s" I stuck in there? That "s" acts as a parsing command alerting the server that there's something on the page it has to play with.
    Many servers are configured to parse all pages thus you probably won't need to set the page to .shtml, but you might.
    If both attempts fail, you can try contacting your server people to see if they'll configure the server for you, but they probably won't or they would have already.
    I hope this helps.

  • Spry collapsible panel open by default

    Hi there,
    I've done a couple of sites where the left nav bar is a
    series of
    collapsible panels, each one housing links to products within
    a specific
    line. Would it be possible to insert code somewhere to get
    one of the panels
    open by default when you open a certain page, ie if you open
    the 'suncare'
    page the 'suncare' panel is open on load. I read something
    about this on the
    Adobe documentation but when I tried it it did't work.
    It needs to be code somewhere on the page that interacts with
    the spry
    panel, I can't put it on the panel itself as I'm using a SSI
    to insert the
    nav bar into dozens of pages.
    Many thanks...

    Check out the examples on this page: http://www.spry-it.com/examples/spry-widget-cookie-history/#collapsiblepanel

  • How do I remove the gap above my Spry Menu bar?

    Hi Folks,
    I have an extensive web site which I built over many years and using different programs but have now jettisoned all of thse and work exclusively with Dreamweaver to maintain and improve it myself. To date I have always had to edit each item on each page separately then upload everything to keep my now vast website updated.
    I read that if I made an SSi file for my navigation menu then I do not need to edit it on each separate page of my site so long as I load the pages of my site as .shtml files and insert a Server-Side Includes line in the code of my web pages. All great in theory BUT for some reason which is confounding me there is a gap appearing at the top of the page which is not there on the pages which are not .shtml and have my sprymenu embedded in the code.
    Rather than attach long code here, it might be easier to see the problem on my live pages. So please go to any page of www.dominicnatoli.com to see how the site looks with the spry menu in each page and then go to say www.dominicnatoli.com/2011.shtml to see one of the newly loaded pages which displays the menu from the file www.dominicnatoli.com/includes/navmenu.shtml. interestingly enough if I open the navmenu.shtml alone it displays at the top of the page but whenever I open it as embedded code on my .shtml content pages it does not display at the top of the page.
    I have not completely uploaded all the .shtml files of the site as I have encountered this issue and if I cannot resolve it I will ababndon this course of action and search for another solution so if you click on some of the menu items and it takes you to a dead end that is not in and of itself the problem as not all the .shtml files have been loaded to the server yet.
    I have trawled through the css and code to the best of my "limited" ability and am frustrated as I cannot find my error. There ar epossibly hundreds of errors in the pages as this site has been created using many different programs over decades and one of my reason for trying to do this new menu management is part of my overhaul stragtegy which has stumbled already at the first step. LOL I know we say if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I need to sort out a better way of editin the navigation menu universally rather than having to write code into each menu on each page in order for the nav bar to be consistent wite wide.
    I would really be grateful if one of you gurus can tell me where I am going wrong so I can replicate the solution for the remained of my pages. I am not sure if the problem is in teh navmenu.shtml page and its associated css or in the other shtml page with its much larger css. Thanks for any help you can give me to sort his out.
    I am working on Dreamweaver CC and CS6 ( the latter has an Insert Server Side Includes extension which does not work in CC so I tend to use CC for the main updates and CS6 for the SSI stuff.)
    Please let me know if you need any other information or stuff from me. Thanks a lot and
    All the best
    Dominic

    OK Nancy, so I moved the code as you suggested, and it has gone back to showing the nav menu formatted BUT still with a gap at the top.

    /* IE6 rules - you can delete these if you do not want to support IE6 */
    /* A note about multiple classes in IE6.
    * Some of the rules above use multiple class names on an element for selection, such as "hover" (MenuItemHover) and "has a subMenu" (MenuItemWithSubMenu),
    * giving the selector '.MenuItemWithSubMenu.MenuItemHover'.
    * Unfortunately IE6 does not support using mutiple classnames in a selector for an element. For a selector such as '.foo.bar.baz', IE6 ignores
    * all but the final classname (here, '.baz'), and sets the specificity accordingly, counting just one of those classs as significant. To get around this
    * problem, we use the plugin in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js to generate compound classnames for IE6, such as 'MenuItemWithSubMenuHover'.
    * Since there are a lot of these needed, the plugin does not generate the extra classes for modern browsers, and we use the CSS2 style mutltiple class
    * syntax for that. Since IE6 both applies rules where
    * it should not, and gets the specificity wrong too, we have to order rules carefully, so the rule misapplied in IE6 can be overridden.
    * So, we put the multiple class rule first. IE6 will mistakenly apply this rule.  We follow this with the single-class rule that it would
    * mistakenly override, making sure the  misinterpreted IE6 specificity is the same as the single-class selector, so the latter wins.
    * We then create a copy of the multiple class rule, adding a '.SpryIsIE6' class as context, and making sure the specificity for
    * the selector is high enough to beat the single-class rule in the "both classes match" case. We place the IE6 rule at the end of the
    * css style block to make it easy to delete if you want to drop IE6 support.
    * If you decide you do not need IE6 support, you can get rid of these, as well as the inclusion of the SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js script.
    * The 'SpryIsIE6' class is placed on the HTML element by  the script in SpryMenuBarIEWorkaroundsPlugin.js if the browser is Internet Explorer 6. This avoids the necessity of IE conditional comments for these rules.

  • My Spry Accordion will not work In IE but will in Opera

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm having a problem with my accordion spry widget in a website that I'm working on. Bear in mind theres's a lot of things to fix but it's in the initial stages. What happens is, if you go under the heading, business and then training you will see an FAQ section. You'll notice that the tabs are all open and it's just not functioning correctly in IE, Chrome and Firefos but it is working in Chrome. (I Haven't tried in Safari as my computer freezes ??) I've included the link and code below.
    Thanks
    Steve

    You not are using the latest Spry files
    The latest  version of the Adobe Spry Framework is 1.6.1, this is the same version  that ships with Dreamweaver CS4. If you use Dreamweaver CS3 (uses Spry  1.4), its wise to upgrade your files to the latest version. This can  easily be done using the Spry Updater that can be found here.
    If you replace
    <script src="http://www.adelxt.net/SpryAssets/SpryAccordion.js" type="text/javascript">
    with
    <script src="http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/widgets/accordion/SpryAccordion.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    you will notice that it works as it should.

  • Server Side Include (SSI) for Top Border (Header) Menu

    Following-up on a previous post, I have created a test menu for my test page so that I can make a change once in my website menu and have it automatically populate throughout the site.
    So, I created the menu as a file, "Aloe_Top_Menu.asp" (it is using DW's Spry Menu 2.0 and I am using DW CS5) saving it as an .asp file.
    When I then insert it anywhere on my test page (see line 150 on the page:  www.aloe-vera.org/test.htm ) it does not appear.
    I have put it in the <head></head> area as suggested by another user (Nancy, thanks for all your help btw).  In between the body tags.  Nothing seems to work.
    I've also tried it in what would be the "header" area of the page, nada.  So I tried in the regular content of the page.  Nothing there, either.
    It's frustrating beyond belief.  And I sure wish the good folks at Adobe would have made it so one could work on it in "Display" view.  Alas, I can work in code only view just fine.  But don't want to spend needless hours on it, if I cannot get it to appear on the uploaded site, at the top of each page!
    For suggestions, I am "all ears."  Thanks, David

    Your menu include file should contain nothing more than a list of links. That's it.  Very simple.  And links are relative to the parent page.
    You can name include files anything you wish.  menu.foo  menus.ssi or menu.whatever.  The extension doesn't matter here.
    Your parent page -- the page on which your menu will appear, needs to be named index.asp to tell your server to parse content from the include file.
    <div id="menu">
    <!--#include virtual="Includes/menu.foo" -->
    </div>
    Finally, your parent page must contain all the supporting CSS files, scripts and functions to make your Spry Menus work.
    Does this make sense?
