SSRS 2008 R2 (Semantic Model Query Language) to T-SQL

Hello,
Is there any way to convert the SMQL to SQL?
Thanks,
Andrei
SSIS question

Hi Andrei,
Based on my research, I haven't found one direct way to convert semantic query to T-SQL query. But we can get the T-SQL query from Report Server Service Trace Log to work around this issue. If we want to view the Transact-SQL statements that are generated
for each semantic query, we can set "SemanticQueryEngine:4" as the Components property value. The Transact-SQL statements are recorded in the trace log.
The following example illustrates the configuration setting that adds Transact-SQL statements to the log:
<add name="Components" value="all,SemanticQueryEngine:4" />
For more details about the Report Server Service Trace Log, please refer to the following article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-IN/library/ms156500(v=sql.105).aspx
If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.
Thanks,

  • Query language for XML that is going to remove use of database

    Friends,
I want to know whether my idea is feasible or not.
I want to make a query language similar to SQL for XML which is going to remove the need for database for a large extent.
Their will be queries for making table, extracting data, making foreign key all through XML and no database.
I just want to know that is their any market value for such a project and will it be sellable,so that i can start working on it.

There is no way to judge any future market for such a thing.
As it is, XML is widely abused, having mutated from its original purpose, a markup language readable by both machine and human, to a general data interchange language. It winds up being extremely slow and convoluted, in some cases overwhelming the hardware when a simple and common error occurs, then having to catch up. A big part of this is the silly and redundant method of defining metadata, again and again and again and again.
So what you want to do is create a database which will be highly formatted with redundant information, dynamically. This is silly, why does data need to be stored in a human readable format? It doesn't always even need to be presented in a human readable format! Why the heck would you need to read the bits of an mp4? Steganography?
What you are proposing is the exact opposite of what is needed. What is needed is a way to describe metadata for many different kinds of data, in a manner that can be interpreted by both man and machine at appropriate times, extensible for various paradigms.
What can be sold, on the other hand, is another question entirely, and not technical at all.
First definition of database that pops up during a search: an organized body of related information
Why would you want to get rid of that?

  • SSRS report with tabular model – MDX query CoalesceEmpty function does not return the provided string value

    Hello everyone,
I created following calculated member in MDX query. I am using it in one of the report parameter in dataset (single select dropdown list as report parameter).
    WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS
    CoalesceEmpty([Customer].[National Account Code].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION,'None')
I would like to display 'None' text at the top of the dropdown list values. So that when user selects 'None' then this parameter will not considered in MDX query else the selected National Account Code will be considered to filter report data. But,
the above return blank/empty value for  [Customer].[National Account Code].&  member though I specified 'None' as text in CoalesceEmpty function. Any advice would be appreciated.

SSRS 2008 R2 is extremely slow.  The query runs in less than a second in the dataset designer but if you try to view the report it takes over 10 minutes.  I have read this is a bug in SSRS 2008 R2.  We installed the most recent patches and
service packs.  Nothing we've done so far has fixed it and I see that I'm not the only person with this problem.  However I don't see any answers either.

    Hi Kim Sharp,
According to your description that when you view the report it is extremely slow in SSRS 2008 R2 but it is very fast when execute the query in dataset designer, right?
I have tested on my local environment and can‘t reproduce the issue. Obviously, it is the performance issue, rendering performance can be affected by a combination of factors that include hardware, number of concurrent users accessing reports, the amount
of data in a report, design of the report, and output format. If you have parameters in your report which contains many values in the list, the bad performance as you mentioned is an known issue on 2008 R2 and already have the hotfix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2276203
Any issue after applying the update, I recommend you that submit a feedback at https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/
If you don’t have, you can do some action to improve the performance when designing the report. Because how you create and update reports affects how fast the report renders.
Actually, the Report Server ExecutionLog2  view contains reports performance data. You could make use of below query to see where the report processing time is being spent:
After you determine whether the delay time is in data retrieval, report processing, or report rendering:
    use ReportServer
    SELECT TOP 10 ReportPath,parameters,
TimeDataRetrieval + TimeProcessing + TimeRendering as [total time],
    TimeDataRetrieval, TimeProcessing, TimeRendering,
    ByteCount, [RowCount],Source, AdditionalInfo
    FROM ExecutionLog2
    ORDER BY Timestart DESC
Use below methods to help troubleshoot issues according to the above query result :

  • Write PL/SQL query from SSRS 2008

    Hello,
I've need of writing the following statement as query or procedure within SSRS 2008(SQL Server Reporting Services 2008) to query Oracle data.
    IF :PARAMETER1 = 1
    SELECT A1,B1,C1 FROM TABLE1
    INNER JOIN TABLE2 ON TABLE2.X = TABLE1.X
    INNER JOIN TABLE3 ON TABLE3.Y = TABLE1.Y
    WHERE TABLE1.FIELD1 = :PARAMETER1
    ELSE IF :PARAMETER1 = 0
    SELECT A1,B1,C1 FROM TABLE1
    INNER JOIN TABLE2 ON TABLE2.X = TABLE1.X
    WHERE TABLE1.FIELD1 = :PARAMETER1
Can someone please help since I am trying to write query with IF ELSE statement or block from SSRS 2008?
Brief scenario - I'm trying to query data from Oracle db by using Oracle data source connection(11g client) from SSRS 2008 to display on SSRS report.
    Thanks,
    JS.

Thank you for the tip and sample snippet as you mentioned it may not work, it did not work.
Probable I did not ask the question right way. Let me ask you this. If I were to write SQL or PL/SQL (which ever is required because of IF condition) to query Oracle DB how do I do below mentioned statements,
    IF condition = true
    do something.....
    Else IF condition = false
    do something.....
    Thank you,
JS.Typically i'd create a function that returns a ref cursor for something like this (on the Oracle database you need to query) and then call that from wherever it is required.
    create or replace function get_some_data
       p_PARAMETER1   number
    return sys_refcursor
    is
       some_ref_cursor   sys_refcursor;
    begin
       IF p_PARAMETER1 = 1
       then
          open some_ref_cursor for
             SELECT A1,B1,C1 FROM TABLE1
             INNER JOIN TABLE2 ON TABLE2.X = TABLE1.X
             INNER JOIN TABLE3 ON TABLE3.Y = TABLE1.Y
             WHERE TABLE1.FIELD1 = 1;
       ELSIF p_PARAMETER1 = 0
       then
          open some_ref_cursor for for
             SELECT A1,B1,C1 FROM TABLE1
             INNER JOIN TABLE2 ON TABLE2.X = TABLE1.X
             WHERE TABLE1.FIELD1 = 0;
       end if;
       return some_ref_cursor;
    end get_some_data;
/So you'd return a pointer to 1 of 2 queries via this function, and the client would process it accordingly.

  • Not getting Report Model Query Designer in SSRS

I am working on SQL Server reporting Service(SSRS) with Report Builder 3. I successfully connected Data Source with Oracle Server. When I working in Report Builder I did not find Report Model Query Designer. How can I find this?
How can it possible to merge dataset with datasource(database entity) in SSRS?
    Please help me.

    Hi Jewel,
To enable Report Model Query Designer in Report Builder, we need use Report Model as the datasource. Report models can be used as data sources for reports created in Report Designer and Report Builder 3.0.
So in your scenario, you need to create a Report Model project in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS), and then deploy this report model to report server. Then in Report Builder, you can use this report model as datasource and open
    Report Model Query Designer window.

  • Ssrs 2008 query question regarding in statement

I am no sql expert, so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.  I want the user to enter in loan numbers they would like to reflect on a report in ssrs 2008.  The loan number field is a text field.
My sql looks like this, and the user will enter in loan numbers like ( 0001,0002,0003) - comma separated.  However, Visual studio does not like the format.  I know it must be something simple, but I can't figure out the correct syntax.
    select * from dbo.vwEscrowHistoryLoan
    where Lnid in @LnID

allow multiple values will solve your problem first.
only follow below steps. if it doesnt solve your problem.
1.create the table valued function in your SSMS(managementstudio)
    not in report vb code.
    2.

  • SSRS 2008 - Chart Legend Missing Customitems property

    Hi,
I'm currently in the process of converting my SSRS 2005 reports originaly designed with Dundas charts, to a SSRS 2008 report and facing an
    issue with the charts legend.
Dundas Charts allows me to create custom legend items on a row, cell collection basis.
After BIDS 2008 has converted the rdl-file everthing looks fine except the custom legend that I have created
in the SSRS 2005 report. The legend items did not appear in the reports preview.
I looked thru all the legend properties and read thru Formatting the Legend on a Chart (Report Builder
    and SSRS)
but still unable to locate the properties.
Anyone encounters this issue and likes to share a workaround / solution?
    Thanks

I tried your workaround and it displays properly, but problem is with displaying the Line color. I'm using reportviewer in .Net 2008 and Line control doesn't contain any expression tab. Please help me with setting line color. Attached is RDLC in XML format.

  • Performance issue due to localization code in SSRS 2008

The reports I am working on consist lot of data and all the customers use it frequently.
Report title and columns are localized by expressions .
This takes long time for report rendering and exporting to csv. When I test without the localization code it doesn't take that long .
Can someone help me to optimize the report. SSRS 2008 R2
    Archana

    Hi Archana,
In Reporting Services, the total time to generate a reporting server report (RDL) can be divided into 3 elements:
Total time = (TimeDataRetrieval) + (TimeProcessing) + (TimeRendering)
TimeRendering means the number of milliseconds spent after the Rendering Object Model is exposed to the rendering extension. It includes the Time spent in on-demand expression evaluations (e.g. TextBox.Value, Style.*). So it is make sense that the report
with localization code takes longer time.
Besides, we can improve the report performance form other aspects. For example, we can add filter, sorting and aggregation in dataset query, because filter, sort, and aggregation is more efficient on the data source than during report processing. For more
details about report performance, please refer to the following article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb522806(v=sql.105).aspx
If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Ssrs 2008 r2 date parameter not working all the time

In an SSRS 2008 r2 report, I am not getting some records selected when I run the report in the ssrs 2008 r2 report.
However when I run the sql in ssis manager, the records are selected. Thus I am trying to determine why some of the records are not selected whe running the ssrs report.
In the table called 'transactionfile', the fields that I am trying to determine where there is a problem is the following:
    SchoolNumber (varchar(50),null), and
    TransactionPaymentDate (varchar(50),null).
Examples of data are SchoolNumber = '121' and TransactionPaymentDate = '04162014'
In the SSRS report, the parameter value for @SchoolNumber is text and the parameter value for @EndDate and @StartDate is date/time.
The following is the query I am having a problem with:
    SELECT  s.SchoolNumber,
          CONVERT(smalldatetime,substring(TransactionPaymentDate,5,4) + '-' + substring      (TransactionPaymentDate,1,2)+ '-' +
    substring(TransactionPaymentDate,3,2)) as        TransactionPaymentDate
     from [eF].[dbo].[transactionfile] f
           INNER JOIN
        [eF].[dbo].schools] s
        on rtrim(ltrim(s.SchoolNumber)) =rtrim(ltrim(f.SchoolNumber))
     where  rtrim(ltrim(s.SchoolNumber)) = rtrim(ltrim(@SchoolNumber))
          AND
          Cast(Right(TransactionPaymentDate,4)+Left(TransactionPaymentDate,4)  as Date)
            >= @StartDate
         AND
       Cast(Right(TransactionPaymentDate,4)+Left(TransactionPaymentDate,4)  as Date) <= @EndDate
Thus could you suggerst what could be wrong when selecting some records by date?

First check whether transaction payment date has 8 digit or not. In yes then try the below query,
    SELECT s.SchoolNumber,
    CONVERT(smalldatetime,substring(TransactionPaymentDate,5,4) + '-' + substring(TransactionPaymentDate,1,2)+ '-' +
    substring(TransactionPaymentDate,3,2)) as TransactionPaymentDate
    from [eF].[dbo].[transactionfile] f
    INNER JOIN [eF].[dbo].schools] s
    on rtrim(ltrim(s.SchoolNumber)) =rtrim(ltrim(f.SchoolNumber))
    where rtrim(ltrim(s.SchoolNumber)) = rtrim(ltrim(@SchoolNumber))
    AND
    cast(substring(TransactionPaymentDate,5,4) + '/' +
    substring(TransactionPaymentDate,1,2)+ '/' +
    substring(TransactionPaymentDate,3,2) as date) between @StartDate AND @EndDate

  • Issues passing drillthrough parameters from a multi-level tablix in SSRS 2008 R2

    Hello,
I am really struggling with trying creating a drillthrough report that starts with a matrix (tablix)  and passing those  parameters. I am using SSRS 2008 R2.
    Here's my scenario:
I have a matrix that has mulitple levels where you can drill down. Here an example with all the levels open:
    Active
    Term
    Leave
    Total
    128
    88
    121
    United States
    110
    80
    85
    New York
    65
    30
    57
    Manhattan
    10
    6
    9
    Buffalo
    20
    23
    4
    Albany
    35
    1
    44
    Texas
    45
    50
    28
    Dallas
    40
    30
    22
    Houston
    5
    20
    6
    France
    18
    8
    36
    Centre
    18
    8
    36
    Blois
    7
    2
    8
    Druex
    6
    1
    15
    Tours
    5
    5
    13
I want to drillthrough to another report - Detail Report. As I understand it, I would click the 65 for New York and I would see the detail for the 65 Active people. If I click the 2 under Blois, I would see the 2 terminated people in Blois. My understanding
for this to work, the Detail Report would need a a parameter for each of the level possibilities in the matrix that I could click: Country, State, City as well as the Status (Active, Term, Leave).
While I understand about passing parameters, what I don't understand is how to pass the parameters if they are blank. Let's say I clicked 65 for New York, I would need to pass State = New York  Status = Active. But the remaining parameters (Country
and City  would be null). I know Country doesn't need to be Null in this case.
My Detail Report has the parameters defaulted to Null, but whether I put the parameters in a Filter for the dataset or in the query itself, I cannot get it to ignore the Nulls.
As a crazy work-around (I think) I can put in the Where of the query  something along the lines of: this:
            and (a.Country in (@paramCountryCode) or NULL  in (@paramCountryCode) )
and I would need to do that for each parameter. Usually I have to use 'ALL' instead of NULL, I'm note sure why.
Additionally, in the Report Action of the Main Report, I need to pass those parameters for each level and their Status. I am also not clear whether or not I need to put in all the parameters on each of the levels (Country, State, City) of the matrix. And if
I do, do I need to make the expressions an IIF statement stating whether or not they are In Scope?
All the examples I was able to find, only showed one or maybe two parameters being passed. Doing the way I am trying, seems convoluted, error-prone and tedious. I really hope that I am wrong.
Is there a better way to approach drilltrough reports from a matrix when there are multiple levels?
    Thank you for the help.
    ~J

    Hi Jenna_Fire,
According to your description, you have a matrix contains total for each group on each level. Now your requirement is, when you click on any number (data field or total), it will go to the detail report which returns all the detail information of the people
within the group scope. For example, if you click on the total of Active users in United States, it will return the detail information of Active users in New York and Texas. Right?
In this scenario, we should set the parameter (@Country, @State, @City) allow multiple values in both main and detail report. And in Default Value (@Country, @State, @City), query out all distinct values. In the textbox which contains
those total values, when set use these parameters to run the report, we only need to pass the parameters of parent groups. For example, if we click on the total of Active users in New York, we only need to pass Country, State, Status to detail report, and
in the detail report, the City parameter will use all distinct values (Default Values) because we don't pass the City parameter. We have tested this case with sample data in our local environment. Here are steps and screenshots for your reference:
    1. Create parameter Country, State, City and Status in both main report and detail report. Set both Available Value and Default Value get values from query (Create a dataset for each parameter, use "select distinct [column] from [table]" as query). Set allow
multiple values for parameter Country, State and City in both reports.
    2. In corresponding textbox, pass appropriate parameters in go to report Action.
    4. Filter data in detail report (in where clause or using filters).
    5. Save and preview. It looks like below:

    Hi Bitia,
As per my understanding, after you add Item field to the report, it does not calculate total of matl group, right? If that is the case, please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the problem:
Modify the dataset used to retrieve data, delete the fields will not be used in the report.
Run the query in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to make sure that there is data for matl cost group.
Make sure that row group and totals are correctly added.
In addition, do you want to add Finished date to page header? If that is the case, we can use ReportItem to achieve the goal. Please refer to the following steps:
In design surface, right-click the report and click Insert, then click Page Header.
Drag Text Box from Toolbox to page header.
Right-click inside of Text Box, then click Expression.
In the expression text box, type the code like below:
    =ReportItems!FinishedDate.Value
If the problem remain unresolved, please provide the screenshot of the report in design view, the following screenshot is for your reference:

  • SSRS 2008 R2/SSRS 2012 Tab Delimited setup is not working correctly in Report Designer

I have changed a RSReportDesigner.config to add a tab delimited option for report export, but it is not working correctly in vs2008/vs2010 report designer. I get a duplicate of CSV (comma delimited) in the export dropdown list.
    I have tested SSRS 2008 R2/SSRS 2012 on Windows 7 64 bit professional.
It is working correctly in the report manager.
    <Extension Name="TAB" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.DataRenderer.CsvReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataRendering">

                </DeviceInfo>
            </Configuration>
          </Extension>

    Hi Dave0323,
According to your description, you want to export your report into TXT file and change the delimiter to be a Tab. Right?
In Reporting Services, when exporting to a CSV file, we can change the default field delimiter to any character that we want, including TAB, by changing the device information settings in the configuration file. For example, to use TAB,
update the FieldDelimiter setting to <FieldDelimiter xml:space="preserve">[TAB]</FieldDelimiter>. And we can change the FileExtension to be TXT if we want to export it into a TXT file. So in this scenario, we just need to modify the configuration
    file like below:

  • Cannot connect to specific Cube through BI Semantic Model for Power View in SharePoint 2013

I'm trying to create a connection to an Analysis Services Cube through a BI Semantic Model connection in SharePoint 2013 to create a Power View report. I'm able to connect to other cubes on the same server, and I have SQL Server 2012 SP1 Update 9 installed
so it's not a versioning issue.
I've captured a log of two different connection attempts to show this in action. I can't post links, but just send me a message if you need it, just in case there's any interest in it. The first is a successful connection to an alternate cube
on the same server, and the second is an unsuccessful attempt that produces and error with "Internal error: An unexpected exception occurred.".
On the SharePoint side, the error is reported as:
Internal error: An unexpected exception occurred. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataExtensions.AdomdTestConnectionException: Internal error: An unexpected exception
    occurred.
This cube was working the previous day, but it has since been edited and it no longer works now but there's no clear reason why. It can still be queried directly through SSMS with MDX queries, and produces no errors.
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Ryan

    Hi Ryan Myers,
According to your description, when you tried to connect to an Analysis Services Cube in SharePoint 2013 through BI Semantic Model, you get the error message: Internal error: An unexpected exception occurred. But the MDX queries works fine in SSMS.
It's hard to give you the exact reason that cause this issue based on the limited information, please validate if the connection string is correct. Besides, we can troubleshoot this issue by using the Windows Event logs and msmdsrv.log.
We can access Windows Event logs via "Administrative Tools" --> "Event Viewer".  SSAS error messages will appear in the application log.
The msmdsrv.log file for the SSAS instance that can be found in \log folder of the instance. (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS11.MSSQLSERVER\OLAP\Log)

  • SSRS 2008 - hide chart lines based on parameter selected

How to control visibility of chart lines based on Params selected by user?
By default, my report display last 3 years worth of data (including current) with Month on the x axis and Counts on the y axis. I have two Boolean parameters:
    TwoYrs? T/F
    ThreeYrs? T/F
if False is selected for TwoYr and ThreeYr parameters then I want to hide chart lines corresponding to last year and the year before.
What I've tried: Created 3 Series groups with filters. eg. YearSeries1 to return only current year data and applying an expression to display it if params TwoYrs and ThreeYrs = False. and so on for YearSeries2 to return current + last
years data if param TwoYrs is True and ThreeYrs = False.  But I don't see where to add expression to control the display of the individual series groups.  I am open to any way of doing this, but this seemed most logical.

    Hi Ok-Hee,
In your Source Query just need to filter the series data based on the Parameters.
I have written sample query below:-
    select * from
    select 1 monthnumber , 'Jan' MonthName, 2013 year,100 amount
    union
select 1 monthnumber , 'Jan' MonthName, 2014 year ,200 amount
    union
    select 1 monthnumber , 'Jan' MonthName, 2015 year , 300 amount
    union
select 2 monthnumber , 'Feb' MonthName, 2013 year, 300 amount
    union
select 2 monthnumber , 'Feb' MonthName, 2014 year, 350 amount
    union
    select 2 monthnumber , 'Feb' MonthName, 2015 year,200 amount
    union
select 3 monthnumber , 'Mar' MonthName, 2013 year, 380 amount
    union
select 3 monthnumber , 'Mar' MonthName, 2014 year, 100 amount
    union
select 3 monthnumber , 'Mar' MonthName, 2015 year, 500 amount
    )t
    where year in (
    select distinct FilterYear from
select case when @TwoYrs=1 then year(getdate())-1 else year(getdate()) end FilterYear
    union
select case when @TwoYrs=1 and @ThreeYrs =1 then year(getdate())-2 else year(getdate()) end FilterYear
    union
    select year(getdate()) FilterYear
    ) t
I have created one post in my blog , you can check the result.
