Stabilization Doesn't Do Much

When I imported my files originally I requested to analyze for stabilization but it didn't seem to do much.  Then I read where the stabilization may not work under certain conditions when importing so I deleted the analyze files in the Finder (after Quitting FCPX) and redid the stabilization from the Event browser.  That seemed to work because I was able to see the Smart Collections created that showed the Excessive Shake and the Steady Shot clips but it still didn't seem to do a lot.  I did see where the Excessive Shake was and I decided to trim those sections out of the clip.  But some clips look better with Sabilization turned off.
I wonder if I'm doing the right thing (I'm a noobie to FCPX).  Can somone suggest the best procedure to optimize the benefits of Stabilization?

There've been many reports that FCPX stabilization doesn't deal with interlaced footage well at all, so if that's what you are working with, there's not a lot you can do at this point.
Some people report that better results occur when waiting to do the analysis until you have a clip in a project timeline (as opposed to the Event Browser). But again, that's not definitive.

    PROBLEM SOLVED!
I went to my device manager on my Windows 7 PC and found the Bonjour service in my Services and Applications section. I set it to manual and BANG iTunes started working like it's supposed to.
Unfortunately, I let my IPad get stolen on 17 Jan so I'll probably wait until after April to replace it with an IPAD 2!

  • Shake Stabilizer Doesn't Appear In Adjustments

Hi, I recently started using Premiere Elements 12. I've watched and followed tutorials on how to apply video stabilization and all say to simply click this button under adjustments. However, this doesn't appear in my adjustments menu. How can I add this?

    coastal watershed council
Bottom Line: You do not add this to 12. You go to version 13, the latest version.
    Details:
The Shake Stabilizer is just in Premiere Elements 13 (the current version) released September 24, 2014.
In Premiere Elements 12/12.1, your video editing stabilization opportunity is under fx Effects/Video Stabilizer/Stabilizer.
Please double check which version of Premiere Elements was used in the demo of the "Shake Stabilizer". It had to be 13.
Please review and consider. If any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Warp Stabilizer Doesn't Render

Hi, I've been having trouble lately using Warp Stabilizer in Premiere CC 7.1. I had used the effect many times successfully, then it suddenly stopped working. It analyzes the clips without problem, however it seems to get stuck on the "Stabilizing" phase. It just sits there. As I try to playback the clip in the timeline, it simply shows up as black video in the viewer. The space above the clip on the time line is yellow. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I've done a full uninstall and no luck. I don't have any other problems in Premiere Pro CC 7.1 right now.
    Steve

I've had some problems with the effect completing, but usually only on clips what were especially long or demanding (like 4k with lots of movement). Additionally I have either encountered or read of others encountering these issues:
With OpenCL Rendering on, stabilized effect rendering does not complete
Large amount of memory is somtimes used when during Warp Stabilizer analysis phase (which is probably the root cause of the first problem I mentioned)
Long progress pause (minutes) during auto-save while applying Warp Stabilizer
Hang when saving project after extending warp-stabilized clip and re-analyzing
Those don't all necessarily occur reliably, but they have happened for some users. I'm not necessarily saying they;re causing or even related to what you're seeing, but perhaps they offer some clues. In any case, it doesn't sound like an issue that would be addressed by uninstall/install, but it could be addressed by doing things like clearing your media cache, checking your available memory, etc...
The workaround I would have suggested is to use AE if possible which it sounds like you did successfully already.

  • Oracle 6.2 on Oracle VM installs ok, doesn't do much on first boot up

I installed Oracle Linux on Oracle VM and the installation steps seem to succeed, but when I boot up the guest there is no gnome desktop or networking (can't ping oracle.com). However, if I run the install again in rescue mode and go to the shell I can see all the packages installed and the network functions normally. I think I have some config problem with the GRUB or boot configuration. What is my next step to resolve this?
I have other VMs running without issue from the developer VM appliances so I have compared the system and network settings.

In this case, we're not talking about someone's laptop or desktop. We're talking about a server. When one is installing something like OL6, its highly unlikely that an end user will ever come it contact with the OS directly. They're far more likely to touch it via some application, and most likely a web app. Given that the internet is a nasty nasty place, it pays to avoid anything that's unnecessary. And X has more than it's share of security issues. To be blunt, if it's not running, it's not exploitable. I recall Solaris 2.6 where the base OS install pretty much just got you a command prompt. If you wanted the machine do anything but flash the cursor, you had to install it. It wasn't blinky or pretty and there wasn't much of a desktop even if you chose to install it. But there wasn't a lot that ever went wrong with it either.
    1) The main reason to install OL is to install Oracle DB & apps that use Oracle's DB
    2) Oracle is the "heavy iron" of DB engines
    3) Anyone who pays for Oracle's licenses is probably storing large amounts sensitive and/or proprietary data
    4) That data must be protected
If you're administering such a system, its not so hard to Google for directions on how to do this or that. If you want a *nix with a nice GUI, get a Mac or Mint or Ubuntu.  If you want to do some heavy lifting, which OL and the Oracle stack were made for, learn to love the command prompt.  You can do far more with it than you will ever be able to do from some point and click wizard.  You can always make notes for yourself.....

  • Stabilization doesn't crop after I export.

    Hey all,
I am somewhat new to Motion in general but a veteran at FCP. My questions is this:
I have a project that I created in Motion 5 that uses the stabilization feature. While in Motion, I used the "zoom" feature to keep the frame filled and leave the black out of the picture. When I am in motion and I play my project, I can see the program moving the full frame around so that the canvas is filled and stable. This is exactly what I want. When I export the video, all of the sudden that zoom crop is gone and I see the full frame like the zoom is no longer taking place. What setting do I need to change to fix this? Let me know if you need screen shots or video shots of what is going on. Thanks!

I'm having same problem here. I had to render twice to make sure it wosn't my mistake.

  • Apple TV Power Usage - Sleep Doesn't Help Much

I have been concerned that my Apple TV never seems to go to sleep fully even when holding down the pause button as indicated - the video cuts off, but the hard drive keeps spinning.
Today I decided to measure the power consumption of the unit with a digital meter I just happen to own. Turns out that the unit uses only 18 to 21 watts under normal conditions! This is amazingly low for a computer - even my laptop ***** a lot more than this.
I got roughly the values listed below.
    Sleep mode: 18-19 watts
    Idling: 19-20 watts
    Playing music: 20 watts
    Playing video: 21 watts
So, the good news is that the Apple TV is very efficient even when running. The bad news is that it never uses much less than 18 watts while plugged in. If my calculations are correct, that's roughly 158 kWh a year minimum, or about $20 a year for average electricity prices.
Not too bad, but I still wish the unit could be powered off without having to unplug it - a real hassle.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

  • Re: installing Logic Pro X on a second computer that doesn't have much internet bandwidth

I have two complete studios, two locations, two Mac minis. The first has full internet bandwidth and I've installed Logic Pro X with all the additional content. The second is in a rural location where I have very limited, very slow and very expensive internet. How can I install Logic Pro X without downloading all the additional content? Can the content files be copied to a drive and then to the second computer?

I'd take the second Mac to a place with a better connection. That's probably your best bet.
You could try to copy the files in:
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Logic
Not sure what the result would be. Maybe copy the files first, then install? I think either way LPX has to do this. Another way possibly, install it, then when it requires the content download, close it, copy the files over, then re-open?
Let me know. This is all a guess.

  • My new iPhone 4 doesn't work at all

You are definitely not alone with your issues. I'm on my second iPhone 4 unit, and am still having the same problems. I've had proximity sensor insanity, battery draining after 8 hours of stand-by (NO USE, just sleeping) to the point that my phone goes into a coma and has to be plugged in to be revived, the grip of death dropping calls....
But the single most irritating and infuriating problem is the signal strength/reception fluctuation. I share a house with two iPhone 3Gs users, and I had an original silverback iphone until July 2010. They all work fantastically well with no issues when I'm at home (where I am just about 24/7, since I work from home). *_My new iPhone 4 doesn't work at all.*_. Signal strength is all over the place. I did a test where I sat watching the bars showing signal strength for five minutes. In that time, I saw it switch from E (edge?) with full bars to 3G with full bars to 3G with 1 bar to 2 bars to 4 bars to 1 bar to "Searching." Then back to 3G, with degradation of bars from 3 to none, then E network appears again, this time with full strength. This all with the phone sitting on a table, not being touched by human hands.
It seems that my iPhone is constantly switching actual physical networks, and as a result signal strength is all over the place from one 30 second period of time to the next. This drains the battery like crazy, and means that all incoming calls go to voicemail--usually without my phone ever ringing.
The 3G phones in my house work great. The 1st G iPhone I have had since the week it came out worked great (though its battery doesn't hold much of a charge anymore, after three years). On my new IP4, games are awesome. The videos and photos are amazingly clear and high quality, and editing on the phone is out of sight. iPhone Apps rule. MobileMe syncs my contacts quickly and easy. The only thing I love more than the iP4 features is my iPad--it rocks.
Everything works on my IP4 at home BUT THE ACTUAL TELEPHONE FUNCTIONS. This is unacceptable. In late August, after two weeks in which I had 4 minutes of phone use, the nice folks at the Apple store switched me to a new phone, no questions asked. The phone worked so much better, I could send texts and place calls most of the time (this was now the first part of September)...except that now that I was using my IP4 to make phone calls, I started having a problem with the proximity sensor during those calls. I'd be talking and my cheek would mute the phone, turn on speaker, open contacts and edit info (with gobbledygook), and of course, hang up on people.
So around Sept. 18 I was told by Apple phone support to update to iOS 4.2, restore as new, and do two complete power up and drain down cycles. This would fix the proximity sensor and any other issues.
Well, I would love to see if iOS 4.2 actually did fix the PS, but I can't get the signal strength to stabilize long enough to have an actual phone conversation. I'm back to watching the signal strength go up and down at random (with me touching/holding it carefully to avoid grip of death, and also when I leave phone on the table with screen lock off --no touching). It is back to switching between E network and 3G and varying strengths of wi-fi from my home network. This eats up battery from 100% to low enough to turn off in under 10 hours of standby (usually 6-7). Essentially, my IP4 is back to being unusable as a phone.
So I did another long, involved call to Apple tech support on 9/18. They tell me that I have to turn off wi-fi, turn off 3G, turn off push/fetch and notifications, shut all apps (no multi-tasking) and do everything but switch my phone to airplane mode--and see if the battery holds up for 24 hours in standby. If that didn't work, I should restore from new, but not load any contacts or network or data or anything--just leave it as it would be out of the box new.
As a test, I turned everything off as advised: 3G, wi-fi, push, etc. Now my battery life is back to normal, where I can have the IP4 on stand-by for up to two full days before needing a recharge. Fabulous. BUT IT'S NOT A SMART PHONE if I have to turn off 3G, turn off wireless, and not use email push and so forth.
I'm so frustrated I could scream. I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that there is a significant flaw in the new iPhone. Or perhaps it is just an issue for iPhone 4 users in areas where the signal strength is marginal, or where there are two types of overlapping network coverage (E and 3G in my case). I know that the networks themselves are in good condition--though I'm in a semi-rural area, the state capital is 4 miles away, and I know they have a new tower and good coverage for the politicians and power brokers around town. The phone coverage area I live in has Edge network in the south part of the network area and 3G in the north part, which is the state capital. I'm right in between. Could this be the problem? AT&T says no, it's Apple's fault.

So what to do besides complain? Troubleshoot?
I just wonder if all of us who have had chronic signal strength and "Searching for network" issues that totally drain the battery might have something in common, despite being all over the world? I'm using wi-fi 95% of the time, and live in a semi-rural area with overlapping networks run by same carrier. Apple folks hinted that maybe in my area the network usage is nearing capacity (resulting in getting kicked off of 3G and down to E as new calls are placed that strain capacity). They also hinted there could be interference from mountains or other objects. But here's the thing--3G phones work fine, and my IP4 works fine when I'm away from home, usually in the capital city on strong 3G network. (When I say "works fine I mean the signal is good and calls go through, I haven't tested battery drain away from home yet).
I have to conclude that the problem is the IP4 itself--something about the hardware or the software (namely, the way it connects to the phone network) is horribly wrong. Other folks who live in urban areas or with strong networks that (likely) aren't over-utilized don't seem to have this issue. After reading through these pages, it also seems the wi-fi may be a major culprit in draining the battery and in varying signal strength (this is from Apple phone support, which said that varying signal strength and the constant pinging off the home wi-fi is creating a "power struggle" and keeping the phone constantly looking for the best connection option). Mind you, 3G iphones on the same home network have no problems whatsoever.
So while I'm not a technical expert, it seems like the problem HAS to lie in the differences in the way the IP4 connects to the cellular and/or wi-fi network. And since the connection/signal strength problem was "resolved" on my replacement phone, but then "broken" again by the software update of iOS 4.2, I'm leaning toward this being a software issue. I've offered to help Apple troubleshoot, and I'm trying to be patient--because the IP4 is a work of art and I've never had an issue with an Apple product before. But all they want me to do is restore, restore, reload, restore, and then drive 1 hour to the nearest Apple store (in Reno, NV) and get a new phone...and start the whole process over again. I don't have time for this, I need my phone back.
I'm this close to trading in my beautiful but flawed IP4 for a 3G. Maybe I should just get a new battery for my original iPhone from 2007?
I understand that Apple can't test for every possible variable of use all over the world, but they don't even seem to acknowledge that they have a problem with the IP4 that will not be resolved by replacing it with a new unit. They want me to believe it's a fluke, or it's just me...but I've been combing these threads and see a lot of people reporting the same issues I am--battery drain and wildly fluctuating signal strength issues, wi-fi problems, and dropped calls. Can't someone get on this? Because otherwise Apple is going to have to admit that their IP4 is not a good solution for people who live in areas of less than perfect signal strength or use wifi or whatever demonic combo I have in my home/work setting.
Or people will have to do what I have done--if you who want the cool IP4 non-phone features, you will have to dumb down your IP4 in order to have it be even moderately useful as *a phone.* For $599 I expected better.
    My (temporary) workaround?
    To spare the battery:
*Turn off wi-fi (which *****, because now I have to burn minutes when I'm at work using the email, downloads, safari, etc--and it's E network, so it's SLLOOOOOOOW)
*turn off push and fetch, have mail get new messages manually
    *turn off data roaming
To keep the signal somewhat stable (making it easier to complete calls and spare battery)
*Turn off 3G (this leaves me on E network--fabulous, I had that with my 3 year old iPhone)
*grip IP4 between two fingers placed at the top of the phone, away from death zone. Tough for us lefty phone users.
*pray the free bumper will a) come soon and b) help. I'm not optimistic.
To keep proximity sensor from going nuts and dropping calls, muting, turning on speaker etc:
*use headset or bluetooth (unless you are also having one of the known bluetooth issues!)
*keep phone pressed to one ear and don't move it a millimeter. Don't shift sides, don't hold phone with your shoulder, just keep it to one ear and talk fast).
I'm about out of patience. I understand that lots of folks have and love their IP4s. I'd love to be one of those people. I'm open to suggestions and have spent many hours on phone with tech support, restoring my phone, reloading data and apps--there has to be a better way.
Sorry for the thread-jacking, but someone from Apple has got to be following these threads--help us!

  • Shot stabilization: The right way?

    Hey everyone,
I've been stabilizing shots for about a year now with after effects.  Usually nothing too intense.  Just Warp Stabilizer to polish.
Between my last project and this one I had a chance to sit down with the assistant editor on gone girl and I mentioned that I use warp stabilizer (usually without the warp setting).  He was basically disgusted at the thought.  Since I wasn't there to get a tutorial we didn't talk much more about it.  But he did say that the warp stabilizer doesn't give you a lot of control.
So I'm wondering what the "right way" to stabilize a shot is.  Is there a tutorial that is more advanced somewhere out there?
    Thanks!

Was this Tyler that you were talking with? If so, I'll have to ask him what he meant by this comment. Warp Stabilizer gives rather a lot of control, so I'd be curious to know what deficiencies there supposedly are.

  • Does Stabilization work on old VHS warping?

Hi folks, I have some old VHS tape I'm importing and it while watching the import preview window, I'm seeing some edge warping and some mid-screen line distortion, like the tape is decaying. I'm wondering if image stabilization will help improve any of those problems, and if not, is there another technique to fix it? I also have Final Cut Pro, but i can't seem to get it to capture the vhs through ADVC...
    Thanks
    Jeff

I would imagine that the stabilization would be much more difficult on old analog VHS tapes, especially old ones. There's a lot of analog noise in there that it has to deal with. Stabilization won't improve the picture quality, but on my VHS tapes from 1999 I have noticed that it does a respectable, if sometimes overzealous, job at stabilizing them.
For the clips where stabilization doesn't zoom in enough to hide the warping effect at the bottom of the screen, you can always tweak it to zoom in a little more. Keep in mind though that VHS is very low resolution, and zooming in is only making that resolution less defined.

  • Dock gone, minimize doesn't work, computer won't respond to "shut down"....

First of all, I'm surely not a computer expert by any means, but one morning when I turned on my computer (iBook) trouble erupted as follows:
Once I logged on, the desktop picture was changing pictures every 2 seconds. I changed it to not switch pictures anymore.
I have my dock on hide at the bottom of the screen and when I went to retrieve it with my mouse, it would not pop up. I figured a restart was in order, but when I clicked on the apple and hit "restart", nothing happened. I clicked on "shut down", but again nothing happened. I also noticed that none of my windows would "minimize" when I hit the minimize button at the top left of the windows. I double-clicked the top of the window and the minimize tab would flash, but the window did not change.
I then noticed that none of my hot corners worked, so I opened up system preferences/dashboard & expose and noticed all my hot corner settings were blank. When I tried to reset them, it would show for a second and then disappeared, but would not take the setting.
One or two things on the fritz would be allright, but all these things tell me something must be seriously wrong?
I've read and read, but still haven't seen anything like this. Do I have to do a backup and re-install of Tiger or does anyone have any ideas that I could try before I go through all that? Any help would be appreciated!

First of all, you should be able to force it to shut down by holding the power button until the screen goes black and it is not in sleep (takes ~5 seconds).
When you boot up again, try checking your library (YOUR USER NAME>Library>Preferences>com.apple.systempreferences.plist
It's hard to interpret, but it might have gotten deleted.
Also check the finder preferences (Library>Preferences>com.apple.finder.plist.
If the library doesn't have much in it, it's possible it was deleted.
Unless you had a backup, you can't recover it.
If the library is still full, and your preferences for other applications are still the same, it's possible that you need to take your mac in for a checkup.
This probably won't help with your specific issue, but it is a good app to have to manage Finder/System. It is called OnyX, and you can get it here.
If you have an AppleCare warranty, try calling them at 1-800-275-2273
(Canadians, call 1-800-263-3394, other countries, look here)
    Hope I helped!

each time  i try to sync my ipod it puts on any number of amounts onto it 43, 28, 65 songs. i've tried to do the 5 r's but that doesn't do much i can . i can still listen to all the albums on the itunes page so it's got to be the ipod and if i play say ,, vortex next time i go to play it doesn't save it for next time you use it

Jack, thanks for the update, you got the latest software.
Syncing issues can be cause by many situations
Use the USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC and not those at the front and dont use any USB Hub, as they share the data bus transfer resource.
Disconnect all other USB devices while syncing, except the mouse or keyboard.
Winsock has confilcts with iTunes, most of these are in Antivirus and plugins, so stop them, but please disconnect from the Internet.
iPod Hard disk has bad clusters - causing read/write delays - no fix, only recommend replacement.
Good luck on 1-3, if it doesn't work let me know.
